Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?”Today we will be exploring the highly debated topics of whether or not books are inherently political, if politics can even be separated from literature (and fantasy) in general, and if the very acts of reading and publishing have been politicized. We will be exploring all of these questions through an intersectional feminist lens, specifically focusing on Gregory Maguire's popular book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, turned one of the longest running broadway musicals of all time, turned top grossing film adaptation of a broadway musical.There are five books in the Wicked universe that Gregory Maguire has released throughout the last 30 years and we are covering them all. Beginning this Friday with book one: Wicked, and followed by the next 3 in the original series, the prequel Elphie totaling five book deep dive episodes, and ending with our wrap up episode ranking all of the books, the series as a whole, the broadway musical, and the movie adaptations. We even timed everything just right so we can discuss the new movie with y'all! Today we dive deep into where the original Oz story came from, why and how books, publishing, and the very act of reading itself have been heavily influenced by political climate and decisions, and how this comes through in fiction and fantasy. We discuss political and historical decisions in relation to book bans, public education and literacy, the publishing industry, because fiction (fantasy included) cannot separate itself from the society, the laws, the constraints, and the limitations of its time. It exists within the context it is produced, and it acts as a reflection and often an intentional critique of the political climate and society it came from. AND that work itself can then influence for good or evil, change. We are here to enjoy these books, but we are also here to discuss how important they are to a greater conversation about humanity, good and evil, the origins of prejudice, free will, and the influence of power, among many other themes. We hope that by just talking these things out with you and each other, we can keep the IMPORTANT conversation at the forefront. That fighting with each other about whether or not books are political in the first place takes the focus off of the real questions these authors wanted us to ask. Send us a textAccording to Miriam Webster, the Bildungsroman is a novel about the moral and psychological growth of a main character. Today, we're kicking off our Anne of Green Gables bonus episode series with an introduction to the genre, a basic examination of life on Prince Edward Island, the 7th Canadian province where the Anne books primarily take place, and some context and backstory about L.M. Montgomery, the creator and author of this timeless series. If we think back to our high school days, it's likely that most of us read popular titles like Catcher in the Rye, Invisible Man, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But what about coming of age stories that center the experiences of women and girls? Popularized by titles like Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, the Bildungsroman has also been used throughout history by female authors to challenge societal expectations of women's roles and the politics that make them law. Coming of age stories about women and girls are oftentimes infantilized and deemed appropriate reading material for girls only. We argue they're important and good for everyone, regardless of age and gender. The themes and journeys depicted reflect a very different perspective when boys and men are not the central protagonist, focusing more on romance, gender roles, and access to independence and mobility. Join us this Friday, and for the following five as we read and discuss all eight of the Anne of Green Gables books and the 1980's movie adaptations within this feminist, coming of age context. THE WAR between Israel and Iran is just over a week old—but not really. This is a continuation of what began October 7, 2023, which in turn is a continuation of a low-grade conflict that's gone on for decades. Iran was the primary source of financial, technical, and military support for Hezbollah and Hamas, which have been responsible for attacks inside Israel since the 1980s in the case of Hezbollah, and since the mid-2000s in the case of Hamas. The attack on October 7, 2023 was the final straw for the conservative government in Israel, which is determined to put an end to the threat to its citizens. Was Iran close to developing a nuclear weapon? No one has said so publicly, although the Israeli government and conservative talk show hosts in the US have made that claim for more than 20 years. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency recently assessed that Iran had enough uranium refined to 60% purity to produce ten weapons (note: 90% purity is required) and that Iran was preventing IAEA inspectors from accessing areas they needed to see. Not surprisingly, media accounts of the IAEA report ranged from “Iran close to developing nuclear weapons” to “No evidence Iran is developing nuclear weapons.” At the end of the day, the theocratic government of Iran, run by men in their 70s and 80s who may see this as their last, best chance to see the Mahdi in the flesh, cannot be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, and—sadly—their religious worldview prevents them from reaching a negotiated settlement.
