Za nami je referendum, ki je – tako kot referendumi znajo – izpihal prah vsakdana iz razpok v naši družbi. Glasove je preštela uradna ustanova, a vsaka stran si je razlaga izid po svoje. Eni so zmagali, drugi pravijo, da še bodo. Roko na srce, tu in tam je zaslišati glasove, ki opozarjajo, da smo vsi poraženci, če moramo na referendumih odločati o vprašanjih človečnosti. A če sem iskren, ob vseh teh post referendumskih odzivih zaznavam, da smo predvsem utrujeni. Ne od demokracije, temveč od nezaupanja v družbenem ozračju, ki smo se ga navadili dihati. To nezaupanje nas dela ubožne, mnogo bolj, kot si priznamo. Uboštvo namreč ni samo stvar denarnice ali zdravstvene kartice. Uboštvo se danes skriva v praznini odnosov, v duševnih stiskah, v duhovnem izčrpanju. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the killer robot (technically an android but called a cyborg) Terminator sent from the future to eliminate Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor but followed by scrappy future soldier Kyle Reese, played by Michael Biehn, and you know the deal having seen T2 (1991); this first film is when Connor gets preggers and has awesome 80's style and learns of the future badass she must, and does, become.  Future fellow Cameron android player Lance Henriksen plays a cop, who may or may not die in the film, when Schwarzenegger's T-800 delivers on his iconic promise to the precinct's desk officer that he will return. (Schwarzenegger, as we learn this episode, did not want to deliver Cameron's line as written as the English word “I'll” was difficult for the bodybuilding immigrant.)  The hosts this week (no Jack, no special guest Shannon) speculate on Cameron's CB sexy talk when he was a truck driver, discover where Jack got his fashion sense, and express awe as how stripped down and fast-paced the story is. THE WAR between Israel and Iran is just over a week old—but not really. This is a continuation of what began October 7, 2023, which in turn is a continuation of a low-grade conflict that's gone on for decades. Iran was the primary source of financial, technical, and military support for Hezbollah and Hamas, which have been responsible for attacks inside Israel since the 1980s in the case of Hezbollah, and since the mid-2000s in the case of Hamas. The attack on October 7, 2023 was the final straw for the conservative government in Israel, which is determined to put an end to the threat to its citizens. Was Iran close to developing a nuclear weapon? No one has said so publicly, although the Israeli government and conservative talk show hosts in the US have made that claim for more than 20 years. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency recently assessed that Iran had enough uranium refined to 60% purity to produce ten weapons (note: 90% purity is required) and that Iran was preventing IAEA inspectors from accessing areas they needed to see. Not surprisingly, media accounts of the IAEA report ranged from “Iran close to developing nuclear weapons” to “No evidence Iran is developing nuclear weapons.” At the end of the day, the theocratic government of Iran, run by men in their 70s and 80s who may see this as their last, best chance to see the Mahdi in the flesh, cannot be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, and—sadly—their religious worldview prevents them from reaching a negotiated settlement. We recorded this about a year ago, for the 25th anniversary of the release of THE MATRIX. But since Elon Musk now controls the country, we're republishing an edited-down version because it's important to know how Musk thinks. Next episode, we'll be talking about a number of the other beliefs that shape Musk's worldview, among them Roko's Basilisk, so this episode is good preparation for that conversation. ************************************************************************************ In 2003, Oxford University philosophy professor Nick Bostrom published a paper titled Are You Living in a Computer Simulation, thus giving rise to the modern incarnation of Simulation Theory, which posits that our experienced reality is actually the product of an advanced (possibly future-self) civilization running a simulation experiment. But the paper on might have been written off as a useful thought experiment had it not been for the popularity of the 1999 film The Matrix, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this month, and its two sequels, which came out the same year as Bostrom's paper. In the years since, Simulation Theory has become a lot of things to a lot of people - from a fun metaphor to explain Cartesian philosophy to college freshmen to an all-out article of faith for an increasingly doctrinaire sub-culture of futurists.
