Welcome to The Chopping Block — where crypto insiders Haseeb Qureshi, Tom Schmidt, Tarun Chitra, and Robert Leshner chop it up about the latest in crypto. This week, we're joined by Monet Supply, DeFi governance OG and current Spark brain, for a front-row seat to crypto's hack-of-the-week: the $200M “Kelp DAO—LayerZero—Aave” debacle. If you thought DeFi risk was just about liquidations, buckle up. The team untangles the hack mechanics, the musical chairs of collateral across bridges and lending markets, and—most importantly—the prime time blame game: is it LayerZero's fault for running a single-signer bridge, or did Kelp DAO or Aave drop the ball? We dive deep into the “socialized losses” mess facing Aave depositors (especially on L2s), unpack Arbitrum's extraordinary move to confiscate coins back from North Korea (yes, really), and debate whether rollups can—or should—aspire to Ethereum's censorship resistance. Finally, the squad discusses concrete remediation: rate limits, portfolio triage on risky collaterals, and the meta-game of DeFi crisis response. Charles Schwab is opening spot Bitcoin and Ethereum trading to its 35 million clients and $12 trillion in assets. The crypto world is celebrating. But what does it actually mean when the largest traditional brokerage in America finally shows up? In this episode, Chip Mahoney breaks down why Schwab's move is the most important confirmation signal in crypto — and simultaneously the clearest sign that the early alignment window at the infrastructure layer has already closed. We cover what layer zero actually means, how the value capture pattern repeats across every financial transition, and what's forming right now at the infrastructure layer before it becomes a Schwab product in 2028. If you're watching Bitcoin through a brokerage account, you're watching the wrong layer. Topics covered: Bitcoin institutional adoption · Charles Schwab crypto · digital dollar era · layer zero infrastructure · value capture triangle · crypto alignment · on-chain capital · financial system shift · DeFi infrastructure · Token Trust Signals Want to go deeper into the ideas behind this show?Start here:

Team NEO 2025 Performance & Impact Annual ReportThe headline numbers from Team NEO's new 2025 jobs report include nearly 3,000 new jobs, more than $450 million in capital investments, and 92 business investments across Northeast Ohio. The report also highlights the rollout of the JobsOhio Relocation Incentive Program, which offers businesses up to $15,000 for making successful hires in certain industries, with a focus on STEM and technical roles. There's also the expansion of LayerZero, a manufacturer for power systems like data centers. The company is opening a new facility in Portage County that expects to create 535 new jobs. At the same time, new federal trade policies could affect Northeast Ohio's economic outlook. A 10% U.S. tariff on most global imports took effect Tuesday, despite President Donald Trump's earlier pledge to set the rate at 15%. And findings from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland say that tariffs are contributing to price increases across Ohio and parts of Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia. Manufacturers and retailers add that their products cost more to make, so consumers are paying more. On Thursday's the “Sound of Ideas,” Team NEO CEO Matt Dolan joins the program to discuss what the report's findings mean for Northeast Ohioans and the state economy. Francis Berewa is Head of Investments and Growth at zkPass, (https://zkpass.org/), a private data oracle using zero-knowledge and multi-party computation to enables users to selectively and privately validate their data. Backed by Binance Labs, dao5, Animoca Brands, WAGMI Ventures, and others, zkPass empowers decentralized identity verification, on-chain compliance, and seamless data portability across ecosystems. Francis shares his journey from co-founding Homebloc—a blockchain platform for real estate investments—to venture roles, and finally landing at zkPass to drive growth. He discusses zkPass's milestones, powering ZKKYC for identity proofs without document uploads, and partnerships with zkSync, LayerZero, and Galxe to secure millions of private data verifications. Francis dives into the protocol's role in bridging Web2 and Web3 through anti-cheating mechanisms and hybrid ZK proofs, enhancing developer tools for on-chain privacy, and his vision for a decentralized future where users control their digital personas amid rising data regulations and AI-driven threats.

The drama is heating up in crypto M&A. LayerZero, the omnichain interoperability protocol, shocked the market with a $110 million bid to acquire Stargate DAO — the very bridge it originally launched. Then Wormhole jumped in, asking the DAO to pause the vote so it could make a counter-offer. This episode unpacks the first-ever so-called onchain bidding war: how to value DAOs like real businesses, why LayerZero and Wormhole are fighting over Stargate, and whether this deal marks the beginning of a consolidation wave across crypto.
