Coach takes a nostalgic look back at the 32-year coaching legacy of John Majors and Phillip Fulmer at the University of Tennessee, highlights their collective 268 victories, and reflects on a golden 14-season stretch from 1985 to 1998 that brought five SEC Championships and one National Championship to the Volunteers. The speaker, who coached for a decade with each man and even shared an office with Fulmer for nine of those years, provides a rare, firsthand perspective on their careers. Both coaches were Middle Tennessee natives, Tennessee alumni, elite former players, and College Football Hall of Fame inductees whose tenures ultimately ended with their dismissals, a testament to the high-stakes nature of the position. The segment moves on to dispel prominent myths, with the speaker explicitly denying allegations about Majors' drinking habits during the season and refuting the narrative that Fulmer backstabbed Majors to take his job, noting the decision was made by University President Joe Johnson. The speaker compares their contrasting coaching styles, highlighting how Majors frequently shook up his defensive staff and was a powerful "closer" in home recruiting visits, whereas Fulmer maintained staff stability and acted as a relentless, day-to-day lead recruiter who deeply knew his prospects. Finally, the segment revisits the pivotal 1992 season, suggesting that the tragic passing of trusted trainer Tim Karen left Majors without the one confidant who could have successfully persuaded him to delay his return from heart surgery, an aggressive return that ultimately triggered the coaching transition.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Original airdate: March 7, 2023 What does it really mean to live well—and why do Scandinavian countries consistently rank among the happiest in the world? In this episode, we move beyond surface-level ideas of happiness and explore the deeper philosophies that shape everyday life across Northern Europe. From a grounded sense of contentment to a cultural emphasis on balance, these perspectives offer a quieter, more sustainable approach to wellbeing. I'm joined by Lola Akinmade Åkerström—an award-winning writer, photographer, and cultural storyteller whose work spans over 70 countries and has been featured in publications such as National Geographic, BBC, and The Guardian. Having lived across continents, Lola brings a nuanced lens to how culture influences the way we relate, work, and find meaning. Together, we explore what “happiness” really means in a Scandinavian context, the everyday philosophies that shape a more balanced life, and how culture influences our expectations of success and wellbeing. We also reflect on how these principles can be thoughtfully applied to our own lives, especially if the pursuit of happiness has started to feel more like pressure than peace. If you've ever felt that chasing happiness only makes it more elusive, this conversation offers a refreshing and deeply grounding alternative.

Mary welcomes back Alana Arguello to continue our conversation around her exhaustive work, “Unearthing Yoga’s Ancient Roots”. Both believers and unbelievers alike think they understand paganism and practices like Yoga, but in reality, Yoga is not a practice – it is an idea. Think about it: if Satan convinced mankind to think they can become gods or even are gods, how does that look in practice? How do they get there, how to they act god-like? By practicing something that is no more real than their thinking they can be gods! Paganism, philosophy, delusion, are all part of the alt-beliefs that are diametrically opposed to revealed truth. God IS truth, it is not just “part” of Him. He cannot be separated from truth itself. Philosophy, long held to be a lot of hot air designed to explain away our world apart from God, is a fascinating subject and enlightens us to the rebellion against our Maker. Most people have never stopped to ask themselves what they actually want their retirement to look like. They default to whatever their parents did, or whatever society tells them. In this episode, David walks through six retirement philosophies — and one uncomfortable reality that nobody talks about. None of them are right or wrong, but one of them just might be exactly right for you.
Most practice owners think growth is about doing more. More patients, more staff, more lanes, and more locations. But the truth is, scaling a practice is about building the right structure underneath it. In this week's episode of Power Hour, host Eugene Shatsman sits down with Dr. David Moore, President of Moore Eye Center, and Dr. Julia Zyrina, Founder of Pine Vision Care, two doctors who are both building exceptional practices, but in fundamentally different ways. They meet for the first time on the show, and what unfolds is a fascinating look at how two high-performing doctors can pursue growth through completely different philosophies. They both prioritize patient experience. They both use technology to advance patient care. They're both focused on building something bigger than themselves. But the way they think about execution – exam flow, pace, trust-building, team consistency, hiring, and scale – is where the real contrast appears.
We will explore the philosophies of Eternal Recurrence and Kaizen. In this compelling episode of Greater Glory, Bill and Cara unveil the unstoppable force of God's Word as Heaven's Hammer—the divine instrument that strikes down every false ideology, dismantles deception, and crushes anything that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ. Drawing from the prophetic imagery of Jeremiah 23:29, where God declares, "Is not My word like a fire… and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?", this episode exposes how the living Word confronts and shatters: • Cultural lies that masquerade as truth • Religious traditions that dilute the power of the Gospel • Mental strongholds built on fear, pride, or human reasoning • Philosophies that oppose the authority of Scripture • Internal narratives that keep believers bound Bill and Cara reveal how the Word of God doesn't merely inform—it transforms, confronts, and crushes. When Heaven's Hammer swings, deception loses its grip, clarity floods the mind, and truth rises with unshakable authority. You'll discover how to: • Recognize false ideologies that subtly infiltrate the Church • Apply Scripture as a weapon of demolition and rebuilding • Allow the Word to reshape identity, thinking, and spiritual posture • Stand firm in a culture that challenges biblical truth • Partner with God as He purifies His people through His Word This episode will stir a holy boldness in you to declare: "If it is not truth, it cannot stand. If it is not God, it must fall." Prepare for a powerful encounter with the uncompromising, unrelenting, truth-revealing Word of God. Natural cider is often misunderstood as funky, volatile, or flawed. Recorded live at CiderCon 2025, this seminar reframes natural cider as a philosophy of low intervention, balance, and intentional care, not a free pass for faults. Moderator Haritz is joined by Richard of Brooklyn Cider House and Jasper Smith of Son of Man (Oregon) to explore how Basque cider traditions influence modern natural cider production in the U.S. The panel dives into fermentation choices, malolactic fermentation, volatile acidity, sensory evaluation, and why great natural cider is defined by quality, not dogma. This conversation also examines how natural cider is judged in Spain, what tasting panels consider true faults, and why these ciders are designed first and foremost to be enjoyed with food. Los Angeles, 1952. Igor Stravinsky, the composer, was 70 years old, and rehearsing the orchestra. A young girl who lived next to the orchestra hall snuck in through the back door to listen to the rehearsals. She watched the violins, cellos, flute, trumpet, clarinet, harp, percussion, and piano. She wondered which one should be her favorite. There were too many options. She needed to pick one. During a break, she got up the courage to ask the maestro. Stravinsky's friend and writer Robert Craft was there, so that's why this moment is captured. The young girl went up to Stravinsky and said, “Excuse me. Which of these instruments is the best one?” He was surprised and amused, and took the challenge. He said, “You hear sounds, but I hear life. Every instrument is a philosophy. Every philosophy is an instrument.” She just looked at him, confused, so he continued. “You could pick just one instrument, one philosophy. But wouldn't it be more interesting to play them all?” The girl said, “What?!? Nobody can play them all! How could I?” Stravinsky said, “Let's say, as a young woman, you go out into the world to meet new people, full of multiculturalism and humanism. You do something daring, filled with optimism. Then you start a family and have time for nothing but pragmatism. You lose a loved one and comfort yourself with stoicism. But it makes no sense, so you're drawn to existentialism. See? So many instruments!” The girl said, “What if I want to pick just one?” He said, “Most people do pick just one. They think their instrument is the best! Go ask anyone in this orchestra, and they'll give you indisputable proof why their instrument is better than all others. You'll never convince that cellist that the clarinet is better, so why try? Just like religions, cultures, and philosophies, right?” There was a long pause. The girl said, “So, which do you think is the best?” Stravinsky smiled and said, “Time.” “Time?” “Time! I can separate the instruments with time. Or I can combine them at the same time. Different instruments for different times in the music. Different philosophies for different times in your life. You can play every instrument, and every philosophy, if you use time, and combine. Time itself is my favorite instrument.” The girl seemed satisfied, and walked back to the balcony to listen again.

The Kings faced the Warriors in a battle of offensive philosophies. The Kings rely on their players to create shots through isolations while 3 or 4 players stand around and space, and the Warriors do it through moving the ball all over the floor combined with constant player movement. For about 2 and a half quarters, the Kings and Warriors traded leads. But after being tied 84-84, the well went dry for the Kings offense and the Warriors pulled away with a 13-0 run and the Kings never got close again. As it has happened so many times this season, the King's offensive philosophy fails them again and they lose another game in deflating fashion.Owen and Fong also talk about the Trae Young to Washington trade, as well the possibility of a Ja Morant trade before the deadline and much more.Use code SKT15 on checkout to get 15% off from HYVDesigns on Etsy during checkout or use this link: https://www.etsy.com/shop/hyvdesigns/?etsrc=sdt&coupon=SKT15Intro Music by Blue Dot Sessions. https://www.sessions.blueIf you want to email us: kingtherapypod@gmail.com

Read our new Wabi Sabi book on Kindle and Paperback here:➡️ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FVNMMS9DWabi-Sabi is a philosophy that teaches that true resilience is forged in the cracks. A pristine sword is untested. It has no story. It has no soul. It is the scar on the steel that proves it has survived the battle. To be complete is to be finished. To be perfect is to be stagnant. The ancient masters taught that the moon is most beautiful when it is partly hidden, for the imagination is stronger than the eye. Growth requires incompleteness. If you are finished, there is no room left to become stronger.. This is the secret of Wabi Sabi. This esthetic is a strategy to find invincibility in your own impermanence. Send Jackie A Message! What does it actually take to build a seven-figure coaching business? In this episode, Jackie Murphy pulls back the curtain on the 10 core business philosophies that guided every major decision in scaling her coaching business to $1.5 million in revenue—without burning out. This isn't about tactics or quick wins. It's about the foundational beliefs that shape how you build, how you scale, and how you create a business that serves your life instead of consuming it.You'll learn:Why returning to foundations (like going back to the ballet barre) is what you do when you're stuckHow marketing became the #1 skill that unlocked everythingWhy sales is service—and the client conversation that changed everythingHow to make decisions using both data and intuitionWhy boring, predictable businesses make more money than chaotic onesThe year Jackie focused on ONE thing and doubled her revenueThe baseboard story that teaches the power of tiny tweaksHow building with intention from day one creates long-term sustainabilityWhy problems scale but strategies scale too—and what that means for your businessListen now if you're ready to build a business that's profitable AND sustainableKey Takeaways✅ Foundations aren't a one-time thing—return to them when you're stuck. Check your messaging, offer, and framework before creating something new.✅ Marketing is the #1 skill that unlocks everything else. If people don't know you exist, your expertise doesn't matter.✅ Sales is service when you believe in your work. Helping someone say yes to transformation is your responsibility, not manipulation.✅ Use data AND intuition—data tells you what happened, intuition guides what to do next.✅ Boring businesses make money—predictable, repeatable systems create freedom and profitability.✅ Stop outsourcing your confidence—you already know more than you think. Trust your expertise.✅ Momentum comes from focus—pick ONE priority and go all in. That's how revenue doubles.✅ Tiny tweaks create massive results—like cleaning baseboards, find the small thing holding everything back.✅ How you build now is how you'll experience it later—build with intention and sustainability from day one.✅ Problems scale, strategies scale—fix root problems deeply instead of trying to outrun them with more effort.About Jackie MurphyJackie Murphy is a business coach specializing in helping yoga, Pilates, barre, and boutique fitness studio owners transition from teacher mindset to CEO leadership. Today we have Mike. He is 50 years old and from Cleveland, OH and he took his last drink on August 9th, 2022. This episode brought to you by: Better Help – 10% off of your first month #sponsored Exact Nature – 20% off your order with code RE20 We offer a free month in Café RE once per year. Starting this Wednesday October 1st, and if you sign up for Café RE during the month of October, you get a free month. [02:59] Thoughts from Paul: Paul shares with us that he recently heard a song by Cameron Whitcomb called “Quitter”, and it's about his journey into sobriety. One line says - “The hardest part of getting clean are all the damn philosophies telling me how this is supposed to work.” We all want a manual and a clear pathway to healing. A set sequence of steps. And yes, there are The 12 Steps that have helped many. But not all. Paul believes that there isn't a manual by design. Recovery is all about recovering you and figuring out what makes you function optimally. Discovering what makes you happy. Could there ever be a one-size-fits-all philosophy or manual for that? You're supposed to explore different philosophies and go on a deep mission of exploration when recovering the self. We are tasked to heal and find out what philosophies work for us. We are on a mission to find what brings us joy. There isn't a manual for that. Whatever philosophy you choose, make sure it involves other people. An addiction wants you alone with a bottle. The antidote is connection. With other human beings, animals, plants and flowers. Good news, your listening represents you coming closer to the fire. We're putting aside our difference and coming together to heal. This is an incredible time to be alive. [06:40] Paul introduces Mike: Mike is 50 years old and lives in Cleveland, OH. He and his wife have been married almost twenty years and have two daughters, 16 and 18. For fun Mike enjoys a lot of outdoor activities with his family and enjoys reading. Mike had plenty of exposure to alcohol while growing up but swore he was going to stay away from it. Sometime in his teens he got curious and decided to try it. He instantly had the “warm fuzzy” feeling but that didn't trigger any concern. Mike continued to drink through his teens into his twenties, accumulating three DUIs by the time he was 25. Mike learned his lesson not to drink and drive and straightened his act out a little bit. He and his wife both drank so they didn't consider it problematic. Over time the nightly drinking increased and many times Mike would find himself drinking after getting home from events or get together. Mike never tried to moderate his drinking, but he tried to keep it under control. Gradually he began losing interest in doing things that didn't involve alcohol. When COVID happened, the drinking time would get blurred and soon Mike was known to always have a beer in his hand. Mike's wife didn't like how much his was drinking but seemed to accept it for a while. He began to try and hide it, but he knew that she knew he was drinking. Mike knew the only way he was going to quit drinking was if his wife gave him somewhat of an ultimatum. There was no rock bottom, Mike says. Work was still going well, and his family was doing well, but he knew he needed to change. Mike knew he needed to prove to himself that he could beat this and decided to give it a try. So far he is three years into that first try. Mike says the first few days were tough but was committed to giving it a try. Mike did a lot of reading and listening to podcasts, started learning more about addiction and taking courses online. He has enjoyed learning about it all and thinks that we are all capable of more than we think. Mike says he feels too good to ever want to go back. Welcome to this classic episode. Classics are my favorite episodes from the past 10 years, published once a month. These are N of 1 conversations with N of 1 people. Brad Jacob's simple principle of "think big, move fast" is one I think about often. Brad's resumé is remarkable. He has founded seven companies, all of which are billion-dollar or multibillion-dollar businesses. He has done 500 M&A transactions and raised $30 billion of debt and equity capital. Currently, he is the Executive Chairman of XPO, a commercial trucking company that he started in 2011 and has grown into one of the largest logistics businesses in the world. He is a true force of nature, and I hope you enjoy his episode.
