Infrastructure in the U.S. now costs dramatically more than in countries like Germany or Croatia—without clear signs of higher quality or better environmental outcomes. Why has infrastructure spending spiraled out of control? Could democracy itself—through litigation, regulations, and empowered citizen voices—be driving costs sky-high?George Washington University Professor of Public Policy Leah Brooks investigates why the U.S. pays so much more per mile of highway compared to other nations in her paper “Infrastructure Costs”. Brooks reveals shocking findings: from the late 1960s onward, the cost to build highways in America surged dramatically, not because of higher wages or materials, but because of legal battles, environmental reviews, and citizen demands.
Today, we're doing something a little different, and breaking from our regular production schedule to release a special live bonus episode. This episode is a recording of a live twitter space, where we wrapped up our Trailblazers of Octant series with an open discussion, community reflections, and ecosystem updates.Since it was recorded live, the audio quality might not be what you're used to from our usual episodes, and there were limited editing and production options. But you know what, that's part of the fun of a live conversation—it's raw, unfiltered, and community-driven.For this conversation, we were joined by folks from Octant, Climate Coordination Network, Protocol Guild, Greenpill Dev Guild, CryptoConexión, and friends from the community. In the community discussion we reflect on key themes and highlights from the Trailblazers of Octant podcast, some of the most exciting aspects of Octant's approach to Public Goods Funding, and what's next for Epoch 7 and Octant V2.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruists-bonus-live-episode-exploring-the-octant-ecosystem-community-space--Support us with a Fiat or Crypto contribution--Learn more at cryptoaltruism.org/supportus--DISCLAIMER--While we may discuss specific web3 projects or cryptocurrencies on this podcast, do not take any of this as investment advice and make sure to do your own research on potential investment opportunities, or any opportunity, before making an investment. What makes something a public good? In short, inclusion and access. It cannot exclude anyone- regardless of background, socioeconomic status, or creed. Dr. Jonathan Gyurko, repeat Pencil Buster, joins us to discuss his recent article on higher education's status as a non-public good. Although our institutions of higher education- even those that call themselves "public"- aren't at this moment public goods, but they can be. Making them so will more closely align their missions with democracy, which requires us to include. Inclusion isn't always easy, but it is necessary and leads to more public good. We can get there by focusing on the incredible work that our schools are already doing. And when we focus on the lived value that graduates gain, we'll get closer to that goal. For years, I've referenced the book The Privatization of Everything as a seminal work in my understanding of the relationship between government and the private sector. So given the recent DOGE of it all, it seemed like a great time to revisit this conversation—now with one of its authors, Donald Cohen. We discuss the role privatization plays in government waste, and who stands to gain from the transformation of public funds into private wealth. (Hint: It's not the public!) In this episode, we're speaking with Sophia Dew, DevRel Engineering Lead at Celo, about all things onchain funding and what goes into launching a layer 2 blockchain.Sophia joined Celo about a month ago, and prior to that she was working on Public Goods Network, or PGN, a layer 2 blockchain focused on public goods. PGN ended up running out of money and winding down but Sophia learned tons of lessons along the way about maintaining a blockchain that she shares with us in this episode. We then did a deep dive into onchain funding - what new things it enables, why it's important, and Sophia gives lots of examples of use cases or apps she would love to see get built out in the onchain funding arena.Sophia was nominated by Nicole (by way of Triumph) and voted onto the podcast by Richie Bonilla, Andy Boyan, Meg Lister, David Phelps, Rachael Amy, and Triumph. In episode 164, we're excited to welcome David Casey, CEO of Funding the Commons, a project incubated by Protocol Labs that builds bridges between builders, researchers, and funders transforming funding models and mechanisms for public goods. We discuss why Web3 has become a hub for public goods funding experimentation, some of the most exciting innovations coming out of the space, the challenge of balancing reward and impact in funding mechanisms, some of their upcoming events and experiences, and much more.--Three Key Takeaways--If the Web3 ecosystem is truly committed to funding and scaling open-source software, it's important for different protocols across the ecosystem to collaborate and develop shared public goods funding mechanisms to support the digital public goods that benefit the ecosystem as a whole. When coordinating conferences and events around public goods funding, it's important to engage diverse sectors including the public sector, international NGOs and organizations, the Web3 community, and academics and researchers. Many of these communities have decades of experience in public goods and can bring important perspectives to the conversation. To reach a broader audience and scale Web3 public goods mechanisms, it is important to focus on building more accessible and user-friendly UI/UX, including solutions that reach the last mile. A great example of this is the launch of Mini Pay on the Opera Browser.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode-164-funding-the-commons-blockchain-based-infrastructure-for-public-goods-funding-mechanisms--Support us with a Fiat or Crypto contribution--Learn more at cryptoaltruism.org/supportus--DISCLAIMER --While we may discuss specific web3 projects or cryptocurrencies on this podcast, please do not take any of this as investment advice, and please make sure to do your own research on potential investment opportunities, or any opportunity, before making an investment. Everyone is raving about India's digital public goods -- or its digital public infrastructure, aka DPI. But is the picture all rosy? What is the flip side of this technological achievement? Welcome to Episode 56 of Everything is Everything, a weekly podcast hosted by Amit Varma and Ajay Shah. In this episode, Ajay and Amit talk about how such a government monopoly cannot be a good thing. In the long run, suppressing competition will hurt us. Firstly, it empowers the state more than it should, and power corrupts. Secondly, it stifles competition, and thus, innovation. For magnificent, detailed, juicy show notes, click here.
In episode 163, we're excited to welcome Nico Gallardo of LottoPGF, the creators of permissionless lotteries for public goods funding on Ethereum. We dive into the history of lotteries as a funding mechanism, why Ethereum is such a powerful force for community coordination and capital allocation, how permissionless lotteries are set to disrupt traditional public goods funding, unifying degens and regens to advance public goods, and much more.--Three Key Takeaways--There is a strong history of lotteries funding public goods like universities and charitable institutions, but traditionally these lotteries have been heavily centralized, with decisions around capital allocation being made by a centralized authority. A decentralized, permissionless lottery would put this power in the hands of the community.Lotteries today require a high degree of trust. You must trust that the individuals receiving and holding the money will use a fair process for choosing a winner and will distribute the funds as promised. A blockchain-based lottery would address this by creating an open source, trustless system for choosing a winner and allocating funds.Traditionally “degens” and “regens” have been viewed as opposites that are incompatible with each other. However, there are a lot that these communities can learn from each other. Degens, on the one hand, are great at coordinating communities and raising funds, and there is a lot that regens can learn from this. As such, it's important to explore ways that these two communities can work together for social good.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode-163-lottopgf-unifying-degens-and-regens-as-a-force-for-public-goods--Support us with a Fiat or Crypto contribution--Learn more at cryptoaltruism.org/supportus--This episode was recorded on Zencastr!--Interested in starting your own podcast? On our penultimate episode of the season, we're speaking with Irina Marinescu, co-founder and CEO of buidlbox, a global hub for builders to learn, earn, and connect in web3.Irina is also a mentor at Tachyon and a founder of Women in Crypto, and she previously worked as General Counsel at Gitcoin throughout its disaffiliation process to decentralize Gitcoin Holdings (which later became Supermodular) from GitcoinDAO back in Spring 2022.It was during this transition period that Gitcoin's bounties and hackathons product, which was originally launched in 2017 by Kevin Owocki, began morphing into what is now buidlbox, and in February 2023 at ETH Denver, buidlbox officially launched. Around that time, Supermodular (previously Gitcoin Holdings) decided to shift its entire focus to supporting the thriving buidlbox platform. In this episode, Irina shares updates on where buidlbox stands today and how it is shaping the future of learning and work, what she learned from the Gitcoin disaffiliation process, both from a legal and an organizational perspective, and how non-technical people can get involved in hackathons and building in the space. We then get into the recent SAB 121 bill that President Biden recently vetoed, why Irina believes the SEC hasn't exactly been aligned with the crypto ecosystem, and the one thing we need to do more of to help regulators change their minds about crypto.

Naturally, as governments navigate the complexities of fast-paced technological advancements that actively impact society, the need for a robust digital public infrastructure (DPI) and the effective use of digital public goods (DPG) becomes crucial. In this last instalment of our Podcast before the upcoming e-Governance Conference 2024, we spoke to Nele Leosk, Ambassador-at-Large for Digital Affairs in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The paths of digital progress and civic empowerment are tied and bound together, so how nations can benefit from sharing and re-using digital tools to enhance governance? Digital public goods, digital public infrastructure and commons are shaping the digital societies of tomorrow. So the question is how can policymakers navigate the challenges of reusing, adopting, and scaling existing digital solutions and create synergies across national, European, and international digitalization initiatives to deliver effective digital public goods. The panel session at the upcoming e-Governance Conference 2024 will give the floor to Mr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Federal Republic of Nigeria and Tiago Carneiro Peixoto, Coordinator for Digital Government Services at the World Bank to hear some examples and lessons. Join us at the e-Governance Conference on 22 May for discussion on “Uncovering the potential of digital public infrastructure”.

In episode 151, we're excited to welcome Garm Lucassen, CTO and Co-Founder of Glo Dollar, a stablecoin dedicated to unlocking $7.4B a year in funding for public goods and charity. We discuss how stablecoins can be leveraged to embed philanthropy into everyday transactions, the concept of Auto Public Goods Funding (or AutoPGF), the roadmap ahead for Glo Dollar, and much more.--Three Key Takeaways--Large stablecoin issuers bring in billions of dollars in profits each year by investing the fiat backing the stablecoin. Instead of these profits going to corporations and their shareholders, Glo presents an alternative that allows the profits to be sent to public goods projects and charities.AutoPGF (Public Goods Funding) is a mechanism that uses transaction fees to fund public goods projects. It is “Automatic” because users don't have to change their daily habits to fund public goods, it just happens automatically based on their day-to-day transactions.$7.4B is the estimated profit made by stablecoin issuers. As the space continues to grow, and stablecoins become essential in every day life, this number is expected to increase. As Glo Dollar becomes more ubiquitous by introducing new use cases like payment rails, credit cards, and off-ramps, they can start to compete with fiat currencies such as the US Dollar, creating tremendous opportunities to bring in substantial funds for public goods.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode-151-glo-dollar-unlocking-billions-in-public-goods-funding-with-stablecoins--Support us with a Fiat or Crypto contribution--Learn more at cryptoaltruism.org/supportus--This episode was recorded on Zencastr!--Interested in starting your own podcast? Byron Carson is an associate professor of economics and business at Hampton-Sydney College in Virginia. He is also the author of a recently published book, Challenging Malaria, which we talk about today. He explains to us what malaria is and the different ways that individuals and private interests responded to it before the invention of pesticides. We talk about why it is so difficult for larger groups to respond quickly and how individuals moving towards an emergency solution can align with societal interests. He gives examples of private malaria prevention action and private COVID prevention action, giving us insight into how we as members of our communities can solve problems held up by collective action.
