This week we welcome Dusty May, Head Coach of the 2026 NCAA Champion Michigan Wolverines Men's Basketball team. He was hired in 2024 by Michigan and immediately turned the program around winning 18 more games than 2023 and leading the Wolverines back to the top of the Big 10 and to the NCAA Sweet 16. In 2026 they went 37-3 and defeated UConn in the NCAA final to take their second ever national title. In this incredible conversation, May shares what his non negotiables are, how he creates a player centered environment centered around decision making and a willingness to make the right kind of mistakes. He also speakes to why he has such a calm sideline demeanor, the role of love in coaching, and so much more. Prior to Michigan, may led Florida Atlantic for six straight winning seasons in Boca Raton, Fla. (2018-24), May captured Florida Atlantic's first regular-season and tournament championships while playing in Conference USA in 2023. He compiled a program record of 126 wins and helped the Owls make a run to the 2023 NCAA Final Four. Before earning his first head coaching job at Florida Atlantic, May was an assistant under Mike White for seven years with stints at Florida (2015-18) and Louisiana Tech (2011-15). Before working under White, May was an assistant under Kerry Rupp at Louisiana Tech for two seasons (2009-11). May started his coaching career at Eastern Michigan (2005-06) with Charlies Ramsey, before heading to Murray State (2006-07) to work under Billy Kennedy. Winstead Shareholder Corinne Smith speaks to Sara Brand and Kerry Rupp, General Partners of True Wealth Ventures in Austin, Texas. Sara and Kerry discuss their journey of coming together to create a mission of investing in women-led companies and how it's made a lasting impact.
Kerry Rupp is General Partner at True Wealth Ventures, an early-stage VC fund investing in women-led businesses that are improving human and/or environmental health. She teaches for the NSF I-Corps program, mentors startups, and consults on innovation and strategy. Kerry was previously CEO at DreamIt, a Top Ten US startup accelerator and VC fund. She founded Holiday Golightly, a group travel service for women. Kerry holds an MBA from HBS and a BA from Duke.
In this episode, Hall welcomes Kerry Rupp, General Partner at True Wealth Ventures. True Wealth Ventures is an early-stage venture capital fund run by women. They invest in women-led companies with products and technologies in the sustainable consumer and consumer health sectors that more efficiently solve the next generation of challenges. They believe that because women make the vast majority of consumer and healthcare purchases, having them on the management team designing, marketing, and servicing products is extremely beneficial. In this episode, you learn more about Kerry's background before early-stage investing. Right out of college she went into coding which was short-lived but got her into the tech space. She then spent 20 years in the early-stage-technology space working at early-stage companies. In her career, she has worked with everything from product management, biz dev, marketing, strategy, apps, and sales. She partnered up with former business associates to run one of the first accelerators in the market and fell upon investing in startups. They did not set out to create a venture fund next to an accelerator but realized they knew a lot about which startups were good and needed funding. The right model for the accelerator was to create an investment vehicle. It sprung out of the accelerator and was the right thing to do at that time.
