July retail data shows positive signs with spending down only 1.4% compared to 8.5% in June, though footfall decreased by 1.7% as consumers remain cautious with their spending. The warm weather has encouraged more UK residents to holiday at home, redirecting spending into local economies rather than abroad.• Five key retail sectors (fashion, food and drink, general retail, grocery, health and beauty) all showed improvement in July• Fashion rebounded from being 10.8% down in June to just 3.2% down in July• Employment is up 0.7% year-on-year to 4.7%, with youth unemployment rising 14.1%• Interest rate reductions benefit mortgage holders but impact savers• The approaching "Golden Quarter" (Halloween through Christmas) will be challenging but crucial• Early and extended discounting is likely as retailers may over-order based on July's improved performance• Weather continues to be a significant factor in retail performanceLooking ahead to August, if the good weather continues and staycations remain popular, we might see further improvements in retail spending figures #theproductivityexpertsRegister for the 2025 Productivity ForumFind us in the Top 50 Productivity PodcastsConnect to Simon on LinkedInFollow ReThink on LinkedIn

Maybe that's why multi-generational living is the fastest-growing household type in the UK right now. But not all reasons are financial. For some, it's a cultural norm or a chance to care for young children and elderly relatives. A new micro-credential course to encourage sustainability in the medtech, pharma and public sector in Ireland has been launched at University of Galway. The Green Labs initiative has been spearheaded since 2019 by Dr Una FitzGerald, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering and a Principal Investigator within CÚRAM, the Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices. Green Labs develop medtech sustainability course The new 10-week microcredential programme is aimed at Ireland's extensive laboratory industry, including medtech and pharma, healthcare and science and the research sector and builds on the success and impact of the Green Labs initiative, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of laboratory practices. Dr Una FitzGerald said: "Once I took on board the considerable contribution that sustainable lab practices can make to global efforts to reduce GHGs and different kinds of waste, I felt compelled to act, because I supervise and teach many different cohorts of students. I feel I have a duty to do all possible to mitigate the climate and biodiversity crisis and feel fortunate that I am in a position to help. "As Ireland's medtech and pharma sectors continue to grow, so too does the responsibility to operate in an environmentally sustainable fashion. Laboratory testing is a crucial part of operations in these organisations, as well as for hospital and environmental testing - just think of how many lab tests are require to diagnose disease or to prove that the water you are drinking is safe. Medical device manufacturers also need lab tests to prove that implantable devices are sterile, and pharma companies use labs characterise the properties of drugs." The green labs journey commenced in 2019 with CÚRAM becoming the first laboratory in Europe certified as 'Green' by American non-profit, My Green Lab. Meeting this standard required raising awareness of the impact of lab work on the environment and prompted efforts to reduce plastic waste, energy and water usage and adopt green principles of synthetic and analytic chemistry. One fact learned was that a single ultra-low temperature freezer, used to store lab samples, uses as much energy as the average household. In 2020, Dr FitzGerald developed a course module for postgraduates on green lab principles and practice, which more than 170 students have taken to date, including online at universities in England, Scotland, Germany and Denmark. On Earth Day in 2022, Irish Green Labs (IGL) was launched by Dr Fitzgerald, in collaboration with Sustainable Energy Association of Ireland and Dublin City University to promote sustainable methods within public and private laboratories on the whole island of Ireland. The new online microcredential programme Green Labs Principles and Practice, will go further to address the lack of awareness of the impact that lab practices and behaviours have on the environment. Employees in corporate and public sector are being targeted through this course and the first 20 places are funded through Springboard. The first students enrol in September. Microcredential courses are short and accredited to meet the demands of learners, enterprise and organisations, created by Irish Universities Association (IUA) partner universities in consultation with industry and enterprise, under the MicroCreds project. Green Labs Principles and Practice will allow employees to examine how the organisation of, and practices in, scientific laboratories can be reformed to reduce their environmental footprint and be established on a more sustainable basis. The Irish Green Labs network is run on a voluntary basis, supporting more than 37 organisations within the public and private sectors, including all the higher education institutes, the Environmental Protection Agency, 10 hospitals and seven companies. Dr Fitzgerald's work in this area ultimately led to inclusion of sustainable lab practices in Taighde Eireann/Research Ireland's Climate...

She got a sneak peek at Naomi RaMona Schliesman's upcoming exhibit “Heilung Saaám (Healing Medicine)” at the Kaddatz Galleries in Fergus Falls. The exhibit runs July 8 through Aug. 16, with an opening artist reception Thursday, July 10 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.Molly says: Naomi's sculptures have always intrigued me with their textures, colors and materials from nature. This particular show excites me because she is examining healing through the senses. The exhibit combines paintings and prints, sound and music and even smells to create an immersive experience, including creating two interactive murals that when they're finished, they're going to be placed around the community for everyone to experience. Naomi's work comes from her journey of healing and also [from] connecting with her German and Blackfeet [and also Blackfoot] heritage.— Molly Johnston‘Blocked View'Erik Jon Olson of Plymouth creates machine-quilted art from plastic waste. Recently, he visited the Visitor Center at French Regional Park in Plymouth to see the work of Beth Dorsey. Her show of abstracts, entitled “Blocked View,” invites the viewer to take a closer look. The work is on view through Aug. 17, with an artist reception on July 31 at 5:30 p.m.Erik says: I like the way she creates mystery and depth in abstract compositions. Her work appears as though you can't see the whole image, and your mind fills in the missing information, not really knowing how much is missing and how much you are making up. It's kind of like looking at something through a fence or privacy screen.— Erik Jon Olson‘Endometriosis: The Musical'KQ Quinn of Minneapolis is a big fan of comedy, and they remember seeing “Endometriosis: The Musical” when it was a Fringe show. Now the full musical is at Theatre in the Round in Minneapolis, and it runs through July 13.The show follows a woman who is trying to climb the corporate ladder but has debilitating pain each month from endometriosis. KQ acknowledges that this hardly sounds like the subject for a comedic musical, but it works:KQ says: They tell this story in such a way that is so funny and relatable, and you'll see through these amazing songs that when we start talking about our health and consulting with medical providers that we trust life can change and be really, really awesome. It is super fun and lively and also extremely impactful, because we are talking about health and people's experiences with the medical system, and how often, you know, people aren't believed. Theatre in the Round is like the most beautiful venue for this show, because you can literally look across and see people relating and reacting to all of the content in the show. The songs are, like, truly phenomenal. They're super catchy. Expect big songs, big chorus numbers, dancing and an amazing band to keep it all rolling.— KQ Quinn

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD has officially launched the Springboard+ 2025 programme, announcing almost 8,000 free and subsidised places on higher education courses. The initiative offers thousands of opportunities for people across Ireland to upskill or reskill, with a strong focus on 'futureproofing' careers in a rapidly evolving job market. Announcing this year's programme, Minister Lawless said: "Springboard+ is one of the most impactful investments this Government makes in the further education of its people. These courses are designed to respond directly to evolving skills demands, particularly in fast-growing and high-impact sectors. It offers thousands of learners the chance to upskill or reskill in areas where Ireland needs talent, from artificial intelligence to infrastructure planning to cybersecurity. "As Minister, I'm proud to support Springboard+ with €34.4 million from the National Training Fund. This programme empowers people to study alongside work and personal commitments with courses that are heavily subsidised or free, making upskilling more accessible and achievable for everyone. I encourage everyone to look at what is available as whether you're advancing in your current career, pivoting to a new one, or stepping onto the career ladder for the first time, Springboard+ is designed to open doors in an affordable, flexible way that has real career impact." This year, courses are available in areas such as Infrastructure planning, Sustainable Building, Renewable Energy, Digital Skills, Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence. Two-thirds of people considering a Springboard+ course want to 'futureproof their careers' in an ever-changing workplace. That's according to research published today by the Higher Education Authority (HEA). The Springboard+ programme is funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and in 2025, a total of 7,719 places are available on 249 courses delivered by 37 higher education institutes nationwide. Springboard+ is making 26 'micro-credentials' from this course list available for those interested in shorter courses to upskill in very specific areas. Speaking about this year's programme, Dr Vivienne Patterson, Head of Skills, Engagement and Statistics at the Higher Education Authority, said: "There are many reasons to consider a Springboard+ course, but the two key benefits are the cost and the quality. "If you're eligible to apply for a full- or part-time Springboard+ course, the most you'll pay is 10% of the fees. If you're currently out of work, you'll be 100% subsidised through the Springboard+ programme. The micro-credentials courses, which last around 12 weeks, are 50% subsidised for all participants. "And in terms of the quality of the course and the qualification at the end of it - courses range from Certificate (Level 6) to Masters (Level 9) on the National Framework of Qualifications and are delivered by the best public and private higher education providers around the country." Sean McCaffrey, from Dundalk, spent 16 years in the Irish Defence Forces before completing a Certificate in Procurement Management from University College Cork and a Post Graduate Certificate in Sustainability Leadership in Business from Technological University Dublin. He now works for Iarnród Éireann. "I left school at 18 without completing my Leaving Certificate. I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life, so I joined the Irish Defence Forces, where I spent 16 years. After leaving, I decided to pursue my first Springboard+ course - a Certificate in Procurement Management from University College Cor,k after which I was offered a job in Iarnród Éireann - a job I wouldn't have been in the running for only for my Springboard+ course. "I saw tangible benefits immediately, so it was a no-brainer to start a level nine Post Graduate Certificate in Sustainability Leadership in Business from...

Adam Hurrey is joined on the Adjudication Panel by Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker. On the agenda: the League Cup's modern status as a "springboard" for its winners, Gary Neville stealing Peter Drury's lines, Dan Burn and the "what a week he's having" threshold, the German concept of a "Sunday goal", some beautiful commentary vibrato, and Doncaster's manager on "swings and roundabouts". Meanwhile, the panel laud Thomas Tuchel's response to the now-traditional questions about singing the national anthem and hear news of a welcome development for generic match balls in the film industry. We discussed a few things including:1. Kay's career journey2. The startup/funding landscape, particularly for women3. Springboard accelerator and thesis4. Trends, challenges and opportunities re new ventures and fundingKay Koplovitz is the founder and former Chairman & CEO of USA Networks, the SyFy Channel and USA Networks International, a multi-billion-dollar cable program company. Ms. Koplovitz ran the network for 21 years before stepping down in 1998, at which time it was sold for $4.5 billion. She is the visionary who created the business model for cable networks by introducing the concept of two revenue streams: licensing and advertising, adopted worldwide. It all started with her insatiable curiosity about satellite communications, a concept she first heard from author Arthur C Clark and his work on geosynchronous orbiting satellites. It was the introduction of satellite distribution into the cable industry that launched an industry. In 1998, then-President Clinton appointed Kay to chair the bipartisan National Women's Business Council (NWBC). Her research found that $104 billion in venture capital went over the transom, but only 1.7 percent went to women. VCs in Silicon Valley told Kay they had never seen any women come to pitch them. It was time to open the door to VC capital and bring women in. By 2000, Kay was compelled to launch Springboard Enterprises, which she co-founded as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) accelerator that propels women-led companies in technology and life sciences to raise capital, now powered by a community of over 5,000 industry specific experts. They lift them to scale and sustainability with access to capital, business partnerships and an entrusted global community. In 2014, Ms. Koplovitz co-founded the New York Fashion Tech Lab (NYFTL.com), bringing promising technology companies in collaboration with the fashion and consumer retail industry. Today they are leading Ai technology integration in Retail. In its 25 th anniversary year, Kay continues as Chairman of Springboard Enterprises, where, under her leadership, the organization's mission is to present and connect essential resources to over 930+ Springboard entrepreneurs. The measure of its success is in the results. A strong 25-year track record validated the value of Springboard Enterprises' alumnae, totaling $61 Billion in value since its launch, with 237 exits to strategic acquirers and 28 IPOs. In 2016, Ms. Koplovitz co-founded Springboard Growth Capital to bring growth-stage investments to women-led companies, building iconic brands with the digital consumer in mind and a path to profitability in sight. She previously served on corporate boards of CA Technologies, Time Inc., Liz Claiborne, Kate Spade, ION Media Networks, Oracle, Instinet, Nabisco, General Re, and over 25 years as trustee on the nonprofit boards of The Paley Center for Media and the International Tennis Hall of Fame.#podcast #AFewThingsPodcast

On this week's podcast, we go over some of the actions taken by the Trump administration in their first full week since the inauguration. We also discuss a report that finds some states are sending back federal money to help older foster youth, and a Texas bill that would bring sweeping change to the way the child welfare system works in that state. Rena Johnson of the Aviv Foundation and Mary Bissell of Child Focus join to talk about the Aviv Foundation's Springboard Prize, an award that will invest $400,000 in several game-change oriented proposals.Reading RoomTrump's Day-one Actions Reverse Biden Decisionshttps://imprintnews.org/youth-services-insider/trump-day-one-actions-reverse-biden-decisions/258340Trump Administration Cancels Child Welfare Contract, Pulls Juvenile Justice Grantshttps://imprintnews.org/youth-services-insider/trump-administration-cancels-child-welfare-contract-pulls-juvenile-justice-grants/258439Child Welfare Leaders Stunned by Trump's Call to Freeze Social Services Spending; Legal Action Quickly Threatenedhttps://imprintnews.org/child-welfare-2/child-welfare-leaders-stunned-by-trumps-call-to-freeze-social-services-spending-legal-action-quickly-threatened/258488Report: Millions for Helping Older Foster Youth Goes Unspenthttps://imprintnews.org/youth-services-insider/report-millions-helping-older-foster-youth-goes-unspent/258528HHS Should Help States Address Barriers to Using Federal Funds for Programs Serving Youth Transitioning to Adulthoodhttps://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-25-107154.pdfTexas Lawmakers Consider ‘ICWA for All' Bill That Would Set New, Higher Standards for Removing ChildrenFrom Homehttps://imprintnews.org/top-stories/texas-lawmakers-consider-icwa-for-all-bill-that-would-set-new-higher-standards-for-removing-children-from-home/258553
