Scaling Digital Businesses in Ireland could create 14,000 High-Value Jobs

A report conducted by Implement Consulting Group and commissioned by Google examines a highly important group of companies termed 'innovative digital businesses'. Delivered in partnership with Scale Ireland, the event aims to promote discussion around the opportunity of AI for Ireland's indigenous tech start-up and scale-up companies. Innovative digital businesses are defined as businesses likely to have digital technology at their core and a scalable business model less than 30 years old. They fall into one of three categories: startups (2-49 employees), scaleups (50-500 employees), or grownups (over 500 employees). The economic role of digital innovative businesses Innovative digital businesses play an outsized role in the Irish economy, paying higher average wages than other businesses. While these businesses have accounted for 4% of private sector job growth since 2017, they have created fewer jobs in Ireland compared to other EU countries. In Denmark, for example, these businesses account for 11% of new jobs, and in Sweden, they account for 13%. The use of AI in innovative digital businesses Innovative digital businesses are key to capturing the AI opportunity and closing Europe's competitiveness gap. These businesses are 50% more likely to create radical innovations and play a crucial role in the early diffusion of new technologies, such as generative AI. These businesses develop new AI tools, in turn enabling businesses across sectors to benefit from the new technology. The potential of scaling innovative digital businesses Ireland has a strong ecosystem of innovative businesses, with 56 innovative digital businesses per 100,000 working-age adults compared to the EU average of 19. If Ireland can transform more startups into grownups, reaching the same relative levels as the three leading OECD countries, it could create 14,000 jobs and contribute €1.8 billion annually to the Irish economy. James Lawless TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science said: "It is essential that businesses are supported in the adoption of AI. This includes tailored support for start-ups and scale-ups, but the foundation of all this is people and the skills they bring to bear. My Department is acutely focused on Ireland's future skills needs. This includes expanding digital upskilling and reskilling opportunities through initiatives like Springboard+, MicroCreds, apprenticeships, and others. Together, with the right capital, the right infrastructure, and most importantly, the right skills, Ireland is ready not just to adopt AI - but to lead in shaping it." Vanessa Hartley, Head of Google Ireland, said: "This is a transformative opportunity for Ireland to leverage AI to secure our position as a global leader in technology. To fully realise AI's potential, Ireland should seek to enhance the conditions that support businesses to increase AI adoption and scale successfully. Google Ireland is committed to continuing its role in supporting Ireland's competitiveness in these crucial areas." Marina Fitzgerald, CEO of Scale Irelan,d added: "Scale Ireland is hugely positive about the potential economic and societal benefits of AI, which is being deployed by the vast majority of our members. This report is very timely as it highlights the opportunity for Ireland to create a supportive environment so indigenous tech companies can leverage AI to drive innovation, economic growth and competitiveness. Put simply, we need to create the conditions to support and match the global ambition of our founders." Report recommendations The report sets out five areas of focus for Ireland to support the scaling of these businesses: Build an AI-empowered workforce by investing in skills and training systems, treating AI as a core component of the education system. Widening access to state-of-the-art AI tools, digital infrastructure and compute power. Invest in research and development by investing in long-term AI research and encour...

We discussed a few things including:1. Kay's career journey2. The startup/funding landscape, particularly for women3. Springboard accelerator and thesis4. Trends, challenges and opportunities re new ventures and fundingKay Koplovitz is the founder and former Chairman & CEO of USA Networks, the SyFy Channel and USA Networks International, a multi-billion-dollar cable program company. Ms. Koplovitz ran the network for 21 years before stepping down in 1998, at which time it was sold for $4.5 billion. She is the visionary who created the business model for cable networks by introducing the concept of two revenue streams: licensing and advertising, adopted worldwide. It all started with her insatiable curiosity about satellite communications, a concept she first heard from author Arthur C Clark and his work on geosynchronous orbiting satellites. It was the introduction of satellite distribution into the cable industry that launched an industry. In 1998, then-President Clinton appointed Kay to chair the bipartisan National Women's Business Council (NWBC). Her research found that $104 billion in venture capital went over the transom, but only 1.7 percent went to women. VCs in Silicon Valley told Kay they had never seen any women come to pitch them. It was time to open the door to VC capital and bring women in. By 2000, Kay was compelled to launch Springboard Enterprises, which she co-founded as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) accelerator that propels women-led companies in technology and life sciences to raise capital, now powered by a community of over 5,000 industry specific experts. They lift them to scale and sustainability with access to capital, business partnerships and an entrusted global community. In 2014, Ms. Koplovitz co-founded the New York Fashion Tech Lab (NYFTL.com), bringing promising technology companies in collaboration with the fashion and consumer retail industry. Today they are leading Ai technology integration in Retail. In its 25 th anniversary year, Kay continues as Chairman of Springboard Enterprises, where, under her leadership, the organization's mission is to present and connect essential resources to over 930+ Springboard entrepreneurs. The measure of its success is in the results. A strong 25-year track record validated the value of Springboard Enterprises' alumnae, totaling $61 Billion in value since its launch, with 237 exits to strategic acquirers and 28 IPOs.  In 2016, Ms. Koplovitz co-founded Springboard Growth Capital to bring growth-stage investments to women-led companies, building iconic brands with the digital consumer in mind and a path to profitability in sight. She previously served on corporate boards of CA Technologies, Time Inc., Liz Claiborne, Kate Spade, ION Media Networks, Oracle, Instinet, Nabisco, General Re, and over 25 years as trustee on the nonprofit boards of The Paley Center for Media and the International Tennis Hall of Fame.#podcast #AFewThingsPodcast

With a focus on social mobility and the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Kate discusses her various roles, including her work as a disability ambassador and menopause champion, reflecting on the impact of COVID-19 and Brexit on the industry, and emphasising the need for effective communication and collaboration with government entities. KEY TAKEAWAYS The hospitality industry is characterised by its dynamism, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit, allowing businesses to adapt and reinvent themselves in response to challenges, such as those faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sector offers significant opportunities for social mobility, enabling individuals with no prior experience or qualifications to quickly advance to management positions through training and investment in their development. Hospitality encompasses a wide variety of businesses, from independent coffee shops to large hotel chains, making it a vital part of the community and economy, contributing significantly to employment and tax revenue. Effective leadership in the hospitality sector involves actively listening to the concerns of both small and large businesses, understanding their common challenges, and articulating these needs to government and media to advocate for necessary changes. BEST MOMENTS "The sector is so dynamic, so innovative, that it always works hard. The people within it always look at how can they make the best of a bad situation." "You can't be what you can't see. If you don't have that, or if you have something that doesn't show where you can go, that's quite difficult." "I always say I've got the best job in UK PLC because I've got that diversity and breadth." "I knew I'd got my sector through it. I knew I'd got the people, the teams." "It's about relationships. It's about trying to see the best in people." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. In this episode of the Suite Spot, the head of marketing at Springboard Hospitality, Jason Pirock sits down with podcast host, Ryan Embree, to discuss the incredible Springboard Hospitality brand, exciting hotel developments, social media strategies, and much more.  Tune in now to learn more about what makes the Springboard Hospitality brand one-of-a-kind. Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot, where hoteliers check-in, and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embee. Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of The Suite Spot. This is your host, as always, Ryan Embree continuing our TMG Hospitality Trailblazers series. We've done quite a few of this, but if this is your first time hearing it to set up the series, this is all about those individuals, brands, management companies, all paving a way forward for our hospitality industry. Trailblazing a path, and we have a great guest with me. It's certainly an embodiment of a TMG hospitality Trailblazer, Jason Pirock, head of marketing at Springboard Hospitality. Jason, thank you so much for taking the time. Jason Pirock: Yeah, thank you for having me. Ryan Embree: Now, I asked this on every single Trailblazer episode. Always get a different answer. But since this is your first time being on the Suite Spot, we love to hear stories about how you made it into hospitality. Sometimes we just fall into it as a career. Sometimes we went to school for it. What was the hospitality journey that led you to Springboard Hospitality? Jason Pirock: Yeah, absolutely. So I probably have more of a non-traditional background when it comes to hospitality here. A lot of folks have sort of been in the industry for their entire career for a very long time. I actually started my career in retail coming out of college. I was recruited to work for Target Corporate in Minneapolis. And so I started off in merchandising there actually merchandise presentation, which was at the time their entry level marketing. They didn't really have an easy way to get into the actual marketing department, but that was the closest point. And then spent some time with Target and moved into marketing and then found my way through a, a few other companies throughout the years, Sears Corporate. I worked for a company called Brookfield Retail, formerly, uh, General Growth Properties. And then I had sort of a reflection point in my career where as much as I was having fun with retail and liked it that's all I knew. And that's all I had done. And I knew that I was super passionate about travel, I loved hotels, all aspects about it. The experience, the design just always gave me such a great feeling. And so I thought, I wanna try out hospitality, I wanna move into that space. And I was very fortunate to find an opportunity with Hyatt Hotels, their corporate office out of Chicago. And so spent some time there, then moved over to a company called a Perim Hotel Group and helped them build their marketing department and marketing team. And that actually is part of what led me to Springboard. Springboard was looking to sort of revolutionize their, their marketing department, really rebuild it, take it to the next level. And they found me as someone who had, had done that with Perim. And so here I am today. Ryan Embree: Yeah. And let's talk about that role that you have of head of marketing, this being a digital marketing podcast, I'm sure there's a lot of hotel marketers that are just getting started in their career. Talk to us a little bit about your role as head of marketing and really the story as marketers. We love telling stories, right? Of Springboard Hospitality. Jason Pirock: Yeah. Well, I'll start with with Springboard Hospitality. We own, operate, and develop hotels, restaurants, and bars all around the country. We've got about 50 hotels in 14 states, and we're predominantly in destinations, sort of urban environments as well. And we're truly across the whole U.S.
