EP # 166 | Cybersecurity for Retirees: Protecting Your Digital Wealth

Your Retirement Planning Simplified

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2025 18:28

In this episode of Your Retirement Planning Simplified, Joe Curry unpacks essential cybersecurity lessons for retirees, based on insights from expert Darren Mar, Director of Client Solutions at NPC Dataguard, who recently led an informative cybersecurity webinar for clients of Joe's firm, Matthews + Associates.  Learn how to protect your retirement savings, personal data, and peace of mind from online threats with simple, practical steps that safeguard your digital and financial life.   Key Takeaways Cybersecurity is part of retirement security. Your wealth, identity, and digital assets are all connected — protecting them is as important as managing your investments. Most cyberattacks target individuals, not just corporations. Retirees are prime targets because of their savings, steady income, and tendency to trust legitimate-looking communications. Five essential layers of protection. Multi-factor authentication, long passphrases, regular software updates, secure backups, and professional-grade security tools dramatically reduce your risk. Awareness beats fear. You don't need to be a tech expert — just build consistent habits, question unexpected messages, and know what to do if something feels off. Peace of mind is part of your plan. Cybersecurity helps protect not only your money but your confidence and independence in retirement.   Resources Darren Mar, Director of Client Solutions at NPC Dataguard Darren recently led a webinar about Cybersecurity for our Fall 2025 Client Event at Matthews + Associates Cybersecurity & Identity Theft Checklist Request your free copy by emailing us: info@retirementplanningsimplified.ca YRPS Ep #97 Blog: Safeguard your Savings: Outsmart Cybercriminals Targeting Your Money with Scott Wright Previous YRPS episode with related content Matthews + Associates   Thank you for listening! The Financial Mirror

Are you chasing wealth — or are you building it?Welcome! In this episode we dig into why wealth is a long-game, not a quick win, and how the daily little decisions you make shape your financial future more than flashy one-time purchases. Drawing on the insights of Morgan Housel's work and the idea of internal vs external benchmarks, we'll explore how to spend (and save) consciously, avoid common traps, and build a life that truly supports you. Many of us fall into the trap of trying to impress others — the bigger house, the luxury car, the Instagram-worthy vacation. These external benchmarks may give brief excitement, but often they are expensive, drain our savings, and don't deliver the long-term happiness we expect. Housel reminds us: “If nobody was watching, how would I choose to live?”Instead, when we align our money with our internal benchmarks — things like time with loved ones, freedom, meaningful experiences, independence — we tend to spend with purpose, save with intention, and build wealth rather than chase status. We'll talk about everyday habits: setting a savings rate, resisting lifestyle creep, choosing utility over status, defining your “enough” and paying your future self first. We'll also cover some of the major challenges: FOMO, status-driven spending, and short-term gratification vs long-term benefit. For each one we'll offer practical ways to catch yourself, shift your mindset, and pivot your behavior.By the end of the episode you'll have actionable takeaways: one habit to implement today, one spending choice to rethink this week, and a reminder that building wealth isn't glamorous — but it is powerful when done consistently. What you'll learn:Why wealth = what you have minus what you want (and why the “what you want” matters just as much). How to tell if your money is being spent for you or for others.Simple daily actions that build wealth over decades instead of chasing one big lightning strike. How to handle the mental challenges of comparison, social pressure and impulse-spending.Join the conversation: What spending decision surprised you this year? What internal benchmark matters most to you? When it comes to CPP timing, the math often says "wait until 70" - but life isn't lived in a spreadsheet. In this episode, Joe Curry explores why taking your Canada Pension Plan early—sometimes even at 60—can be a smart, meaningful choice for your lifestyle, legacy, and peace of mind. Key Takeaways from this Podcast CPP timing isn't just about math — it's about meaning. The "optimal" financial choice may not be the one that helps you live your best retirement. Taking CPP early can increase flexibility. Early benefits can fund experiences, family gifts, or charitable giving when you're healthiest and most active. Zero-earning years can reduce your benefit. If you retire before 65 but delay CPP, those years may count against you in the CPP calculation. Not everyone needs longevity insurance. If you have pensions, rental income, or sufficient savings, delaying CPP might not be worth the trade-off. Behavioral comfort matters. If you're hesitant to draw from investments, that monthly CPP cheque might help you enjoy your retirement more freely. Reach Church (Everett, WA)

In True Wealth, Pastor Sean Gasperetti teaches from Matthew 19, revealing that following Jesus always costs something—but what we gain in Him is worth far more than what we give up. Through the story of the rich young ruler, we see that true discipleship means surrendering what grips our hearts and trusting that treasure in heaven is better than comfort on earth. Life's real wealth is found not in what we hold onto, but in who we follow.

Wondering if your retirement portfolio is really performing well? In this episode of Your Retirement Planning Simplified, Joe Curry explains why comparing your portfolio to indexes like the TSX or S&P 500 can be misleading. Learn how to evaluate investment performance based on your personal goals, asset mix, and income needs — not on market headlines. Key Takeaways from this Episode Stop Comparing to the TSX. Your retirement portfolio is designed for stability and income, not for competing with stock indexes built for accumulation. Diversification Is the Real Benchmark. A well-structured retirement portfolio should include Canadian, U.S., international, and fixed-income holdings — each with its own purpose. Asset Allocation Should Reflect You. Your mix of stocks and bonds should align with your risk tolerance, income needs, and guaranteed income sources like CPP, OAS, or pensions. Evidence Beats Guesswork. Research like the SPIVA scorecard consistently shows that active managers rarely beat the market after fees — supporting an evidence-based approach. Stay Focused on Purpose, Not Performance Chasing. Evaluate your portfolio by asking whether it's helping you meet your income goals and maintain peace of mind, not whether it's "winning" against the market. In this episode of Your Retirement Planning Simplified, Joe breaks down the five and a half guaranteed retirement income sources every Canadian should understand—from CPP and OAS to pensions and annuities. Learn how to build a dependable retirement income floor so you can retire with confidence and weather any market conditions.     Key Takeaways from this Episode Defined Benefit Pensions – A disappearing but powerful guaranteed income source, backed by employers or plan sponsors. Know your plan's funding health and inflation protection. Canada Pension Plan (CPP) – One of the most reliable lifetime income streams. Delaying CPP can act as “longevity insurance,” boosting payments by 8.4% per year after age 65. Old Age Security (OAS) – Government-funded and guaranteed, but subject to clawbacks for higher-income retirees — making tax-efficient withdrawal strategies critical. Annuities – Think of these as “do-it-yourself pensions.” You exchange a lump sum for guaranteed lifetime income, ideal for those who value simplicity and peace of mind. Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefits (GMWBs) – Hybrid investment-insurance products that can provide guaranteed income while keeping you invested, though often with complexity and higher fees. Bonus (“Half”) Sources: GIS for lower-income retirees and rental income, which may feel stable, but lacks a true guarantee.     Ready to take the next step?  Identify your retirement income style with the RISA questionnaire at  https://account.myrisaprofile.com/invitation-link/88QG1TMQ12     Want a retirement plan that adapts as your life evolves?   Most retirees view mandatory RIF withdrawals as a tax trap—but what if they're actually a strategic advantage?  In this episode, Joe Curry explains how smart RIF planning can reduce lifetime taxes, protect OAS and government benefits, and even help grow wealth. Learn how to use income smoothing, tax brackets, and the three-bucket strategy to master retirement income planning. Key Takeaways ·       RIF withdrawals aren't a punishment—they're part of a tax-deferred system designed for the decumulation phase of retirement. ·       Starting RRSP withdrawals early can smooth out income and prevent OAS clawbacks later in life. ·       The pension tax credit offers up to $2,000 in RIF withdrawals tax-free after age 65. ·       Using the three-bucket strategy—pre-tax, tax-free, and taxable—helps optimize annual withdrawals and minimize taxes. ·       Annual reviews are essential to adapt your withdrawal strategy as tax rules, income, and benefits change. —------------------------------------------------------------ Ready to take the next step?  Identify your retirement income style with the RISA questionnaire at  https://account.myrisaprofile.com/invitation-link/88QG1TMQ12  Want a retirement plan that adapts as your life evolves? We dig into how deeply-ingrained beliefs shape your financial reality, why “money is energy” is more than a nice concept, and how to collapse the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Have you ever stopped and looked at your life and thought, Why do I feel poorer than I am? I know I have. On paper, things are going well. I've written books, worked with big companies, and my little company continues to grow. I've built a career that I'm proud of, and I work hard to live within my means, especially with six kids who are always wanting lessons in everything! From the outside, it looks like it is all going really well.. But when I pause to reflect, there's still this feeling of being... poorer than I'd like to be. And no, I'm not talking about the literal kind of poverty, the kind that keeps people awake at night, wondering how they're going to make ends meet. I'm not talking about the kind of struggle that comes with scarcity. What I'm talking about is something deeper. A kind of poverty that can't be solved with money, no matter how much you have in the bank. Ryan Holiday recently wrote about this in an article titled “These Are All the Ways I Feel Poorer Than I Am.” In it, he talks about a conversation he had with Sahil Bloom about the different kinds of wealth, wealth that doesn't show up on your paycheck. Time wealth, emotional wealth, social wealth, mental wealth, and physical wealth. These are the kinds of wealth we often overlook, even though they shape our happiness far more than any amount of money ever will. Today, I want to dive into this idea. I want to explore how, even though my life is going well, I still deal with anxiety and stress, worrying about things that haven't happened, missing out on present moments because my mind is too busy. I want to talk about how I've neglected my social wealth and how I don't have enough close friends anymore because I'm too wrapped up in work and family. But here's the thing: The more I think about it, the more I realize that true wealth isn't about the size of your bank account, it's about the balance in your life. It's about the freedom to live on your terms, the relationships you build, and the moments you enjoy, fully present. So, if you've ever felt like you have everything, but still feel like something's missing, this episode is for you. We'll explore how to stop chasing the wrong kinds of wealth and start focusing on the ones that really matter. And maybe, just maybe, you'll discover that you've had everything you need all along. **From Ryan Holiday's website:  "These Are All The Ways I Feel Poorer Than I Am."  (It is a great read!) QUOTES BY DR. BRAY "Worry and stress are a real cost—they have stolen hours of sleep, moments of joy, and precious time with family." "We spend so much time worrying about imaginary problems that we create real ones." "True wealth is measured not by the balance of your bank account, but by the balance in your life."

God's heart for His children is to live in true prosperity—not the fleeting wealth of the world, but the eternal inheritance that comes through Christ. In the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15), we see the dangers of demanding an inheritance prematurely and the grace of the Father who restores without shame. True sons and daughters understand that their greatest inheritance is found in being with the Father, walking in humility, and trusting His timing. Real prosperity is found in obedience, gratitude, faithfulness, and walking in step with the Spirit. ✨ Whether you are navigating financial challenges, seeking God's wisdom in your work, or longing to understand biblical prosperity, our hope is that this message will encourage and equip you to rest in the Father's love and power to provide.

Intro:Good morning. My name is David Jansson, and we're continuing our Summer of Wisdom series on Proverbs. Today, we're tackling the topic of money and wealth. The Bible has over 2,350 verses on this, and God cares how we get money, what we think about it, and what we do with it. This sermon, "10 Lessons on Wealth from Proverbs," will distill God's perspective and challenge us.Scripture References: Proverbs 10:4, 10:15, 11:4, 11:16, 11:24-26, 13:11, 14:20, 15:16, 15:27, 18:11, 19:17, 21:20, 22:1, 22:7, 22:9, 23:4-5, 28:19, 28:20, 28:22, 30:8-9, Matthew 6:19-21, 19:23-24, 1 Timothy 6:10, Hebrews 13:5, Malachi 3:10, 2 Corinthians 9:6-15, Acts 4:32-35Key Points:Wealth is Good, But Deceitful: Proverbs affirms wealth is good but emphasizes it's not the most important thing. It's a "high wall in his imagination" (Prov 18:11), providing false security. The love of money blinds us to our need for God.How to Build Lasting Wealth God's Way:Diligence and Hard Work: God provides through our consistent labor (Prov 10:4).Justice, Not Injustice: Wealth gained by deceit will not last (Prov 13:11).Seek Wisdom: God's wisdom brings enduring wealth, better than gold (Prov 8:18).Aim for True Wealth, Not Showy: Don't waste money impressing others; find security in God.Flee from Debt: Debt makes you a "slave of the lender" (Prov 22:7). Trust God to provide.Build Wealth Slowly: Getting rich quick often leads to ruin (Prov 13:11).Give Generously: This is the most important purpose of wealth. Giving generously is an act of faith and the best antidote to the danger of wealth. God promises to bless those who give (Mal 3:10).Conclusion:Wealth is good but dangerous. The way to navigate this is to pursue it and use it God's way, through generous giving. This is where true abundance lies. Your security, authority, and God's love for you are not tied to your bank account.Calls to Action:Reflect: Where is your heart's hope? Repent if needed.Give Generously: Consider tithing or supporting ministries. Test God in this, as He invites us to.Worship: Let's worship and take communion, rejoicing in the security of God's love. On this week's Stansberry Investor Hour, Corey welcomes his colleague Brett Eversole back to the show. Brett is the editor of the True Wealth, True Wealth Systems, and DailyWealth newsletters. He also serves on the Investment Committee for Stansberry Portfolio Solutions. Brett kicks things off by sharing what he learned from his mentor Steve Sjuggerud, including the investment philosophy of buying assets that are "cheap, hated, and in an uptrend." He examines the recent tariff drama and why he believes we're about to return to a boring market fueled by fundamentals after several months of turbulence. As Brett explains, a lot of it has to do with increased capital spending from hyperscalers. (0:46) Next, Brett reviews the difference between secular bull markets and cyclical bull markets. He compares today's bull market (driven by AI) with the bull market of the late '90s (driven by the Internet), noting that a massive infrastructure buildout caused both. Brett predicts a normal market for the next few years, followed by a dot-com-style AI boom and then a "lost decade." He also discusses the S&P 500 Index decoupling from the U.S. economy, tariffs hurting smaller companies, and why he's bullish on gold and silver. (14:59) Finally, Brett talks about indicators that investors can use to gauge the market's underlying health, as well as what divergence between the indicators can mean in both the short and long term. He then dives into his work on Stansberry Portfolio Solutions, including the strategy the team uses to find the best companies and how to manage risk. And he closes things out with an in-depth analysis of today's real estate market. (33:29)
