POPULARITY
In this episode we sit down with Momentum Brewery and ProofNoMore's co-owner Lars Dahlhaus to better understand the non-alcoholic beer category, where it may be headed, and how he's working to build a brand around the ‘why' and ‘where' consumers are drinking the product. As the category continues to mature, understanding these motivations will be critical to finding success, and creating more brands for N/A drinkers to enjoy. Lars' many beverage experiences include bringing the Rothaus Beers from Bavaria to the U.S., and later launching Crabbie's Ginger beer for St. Killian. In our conversation Lars talks about some of the differences between the German and U.S. beer markets, his thoughts on branding and packaging (including how that may influence the consumer), as well as why Momentum would like to partner with smaller, local breweries to help them offer an N/A beer in their taprooms.
Episode 316 - Lars Dahlhaus, Beer Importer & Beverage Market Specialist Happy Monday, Thieves! You may recall a special episode from the beginning of April conducted in another language. Our friend Lars Dahlhaus of Baldor Specialty Foods was graciously in on the gag and played host on that episode. And just like our subsequent English language episode with Matthias Trum, we recorded a stand-alone episode with Lars to talk about his storied career importing European beers into the US. Lars has been responsible for bringing in some of the classics (Rothaus Pils, Thomas Hardy’s Ale) and continues working with Baldor Specialty Foods as their Beer & Beverage Market Specialist. It was a fun episode and hope you enjoy. Tune in and let us know what you think!***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. This week Jimmy and his guests went on a 11-country European tasting tour with Miguel Rivas, the Beer Trekker who documents his world travels on Instagram. They were joined in the studio by international and domestic beer importers BR Rolya, Joel Shelton, and Lars Dahlhaus. The conversation got deep. It dove into the current state of European and American craft brewing, exports, and imports. Decades ago Jimmy was only drinking German beers, but American craft beers have exploded onto the scene. So much so that a lot of brewers are making IPAs in places like Barcelona. More traditional countries like Germany or Belgium, that are already saturated in rich brewery and beer culture, continue to produce lager and pilsners among other brews that are harder to make with the same quality in the states. They tell colorful stories of the villages and towns that treat beer like it’s part of the family and not just a business. Tastings range from the earthy La Moneuse from Blaugies, Belgium to the 2017 Historical Thomas Hardy’s barley wine from England. Tune in to this week's Beer Sessions Radio as host Jimmy Carbone and winter co-host Anne Becerra welcome Joe and Chris DeCicco of DeCicco Family Markets as well as Lars Dahlhaus, Eastern Sales Manager at Fentiman’s Inc, plus special guests from NYC's Fraunces Tavern. Anne Becerra is still shocked that she's been able to turn her love for craft beer into a career. She was the first female Certified Cicerone in New York City and has been at the helm of some of the best craft beer bars in Manhattan for the last seven years, most recently at The Blind Tiger, The Ginger Man and as Beer Director for Taproom 307. Anne is a beer writer for Serious Eats and Martha Stewart Living, and has been featured multiple times on NBC, Fox and Friends and CNN as well as contributed to TIME Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Wall Street Journal, Sirius XM, USA Today and more. She was the only speaker at both Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans and the Women’s Chef and Restaurateur Conference in NYC to represent the beer industry, and believes the best part about craft beer is sharing it. You can catch her teaching classes, judging beer competitions, hosting beer dinners and weekly tasting events, and curating beer pairings throughout the tri-state area. The three young scions of the family that founded the Westchester/Rockland DeCicco Markets dynasty—Joe and his cousins, brothers Chris and John—all share a passion for beer. The trio used the unglamorous fact that they were born into a supermarket family to launch themselves as heavy players in the local beer world. Look for the 10 DeCicco stores in Westchester and Rockland to carry between 400 and 1000+ beers each. Meanwhile, several of the DeCicco stores (Pelham, Harrison, Ardsley, Armonk, Cornwall, and Brewster) offer taps for growler fills. And two of the DeCicco Markets (Armonk and Brewster) actually offer craft-beer bars on the premises, which means that you can catch a buzz before doing your weekly shopping. The Armonk DeCicco is located next to Fortina and offers 28 taps for growler refills or for just hanging around drinking. Look for the DeCicco boys to collaborate with several local brewers including Sixpoint Brewery, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, and Evil Twin Brewing. Also, look for DeCicco’s sponsorship at many local beer events, including Savor New York. Lars has a new company called "Liquid Projects" which incorporated in April of 2015. As the president of Schwelmer Beer Imports N.A., Lars has been importing the Craft Beers from his hometown as well as other Bavarian beers such as Lammsbrau, Miltenberger, Meckatzer and Eichbaum to name a few since 2003. From 2011 to 2014 Lars has been the Craft Beer Portfolio Manager at St. Killian, responsible for such renowned brands as Wuerzburger and again Lammsbrau. During his time there he launched and established Crabbie’s from the UK, 961 from Lebanon, Andechs and Rothaus from Germany. The burning desire to offer an innovative and cost-effective way to international producers is what started Liquid Projects. Lars has been a resident of Williamsburg, Brooklyn for 18 years.
