Hey guys, it's Debbie Nigro — and today, I want to introduce you to someone whose spirit will stick with you long after you finish reading this. Meet John Chiorando — a brilliant businessman, devoted family man, and philanthropist — and yes, the self-proclaimed “Coconut Commander” behind the fast-growing beverage brand Once Upon a Coconut. But it's not just about the coconuts. It's about "Greatitude." Not a typo. It's the name of John's new book — a powerful message born from unimaginable heartbreak: the loss of his beautiful daughter, Nina, to a rare form of terminal cancer called Leptomeningeal Disease. A Book Born From Heartache — and Healing John didn't plan to write a book. But when his young son once complained about not getting enough Christmas presents, something clicked. He realized how much of today's culture is focused on what we lack, rather than what we have. So he wrote Greatitude, a message-driven book that gently shifts our lens toward appreciation, especially for life's simplest joys — like a cup of coffee, a walk on the beach, or time with someone we love. Then Nina got sick. And suddenly, what started as a lesson in thankfulness became a tribute to her courage — and a platform for purpose. As John shared on the show: “My colleague told me, ‘You didn't write this book. Your daughter did.'” And you know what? She did. 100% of Book Proceeds Go to Charity Every single dollar from the purchase of Greatitude goes to one of two causes close to John's heart: Nina Strong Foundation for rare cancer research Down Syndrome Foundation (another personal connection in his family) And as a thank-you? You get a free case of Once Upon a Coconut when you buy the book. (Love that part!) Grab it at Greatitude.org Once Upon a Coconut: Coconut Water With a Cause You've probably seen the bright, playful cans of Once Upon a Coconut on shelves — I spotted it in a DeCicco's here in New York and literally stopped in my tracks. It's more than delicious (hello, coconut + chocolate?!), it's also doing good: Plant-based, non-GMO, full of electrolytes Ethically sourced from Vietnam And here's the biggie: 10% of all profits go to charity. As John says: “Giving is our best ingredient.” Even Shark Tank's Daymond John and NFL stars like Rob Gronkowski and Ronnie Stanley are investors. But it's the mission that's the real magnet. Fastest-Growing Coconut Water Brand in America From Whole Foods to Walmart to Target — Once Upon a Coconut is popping up everywhere. And it's not just good business — it's good energy. As John says: “We call it nature's Gatorade.” Cheers to that! Final Sips of Inspiration Talking with John was a reminder that life is fragile, beautiful, and worthy of deep appreciation — even in the face of heartbreak... in spite of it all. If you want to feel better, do better, and drink something better… Pick up a copy of Greatitude. Sip some coconut water with purpose. And maybe, just maybe, start seeing the world through a lens of Greatitude too. With heart, Debbie BUY THE BOOK + GET YOUR FREE CASE OF COCONUT WATER! Throughout this season and in between the main episodes, you get to hear some of my interviews with artists, creatives, and industry experts. And in this bonus interview episode, two of the guests from the Evita episode share more stories and insights. The first one is actress Christina DeCicco, who played Eva Peron twice a week in the 2012 Broadway revival of Evita. She talks about her audition process, what rehearsals were like, and how she went about portrayed this iconic leading lady. I even open up a bit about my own time on the national tour and some of the parallels we both had in our respective productions. Next, is Sammi Cannold, a director and long-time fan of the musical itself. She was actually in Argentina when we had this conversation, and she'll be sharing what she's learned about this larger-than-life woman, who even decades later is still very much a part of the fabric of Argentina life and culture. This research has informed each of the three productions she's directed of Evita. The latest one was at American Reperatory Theater in Summer of 2023, which the Boston Globe called "Exceptional! A new generation's take on Evita." Albertus van Beest was born in Rotterdam, where he grew up near the city's wharves. His talent for sketching got the attention of Prince Henry of the Netherlands, who asked him to travel with him and the Dutch fleet to the Mediterranean. According to the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Albert van Beest (1820-1860) "was born in Holland, [and] spent three years collaborating with William Bradford. A talented marine artist, Van Beest was particularly skilled at capturing the drama of shipwrecks and storms at sea." His travels, the first of which were over a span of three summers, took him to Morocco and many other places. He continued sketching on his travels to Brazil, Iceland, Patagonia, and the Falklands. In 1845 he left home and sailed to New York, where he lived for fifteen years. One of van Beest's pupils was Fairhaven, Massachusetts marine painter William Bradford. R. Swain Gifford is also said to have been one of his pupils. Bradford sought him out in New York and invited him to share a studio in nearby New Bedford. They worked and collaborated at that location for three years. Van Beest was as dramatic and temperamental as the scenes and subjects of his marine paintings. He returned to New York City where he died at the age of forty. The In-Focus Podcasts are up close and personal conversations with the makers, performers, supporters, and cultural impresarios of the remarkable creative community of South Coast Massachusetts including New Bedford, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Westport, and beyond.

In this episode of Work in Progress, Daniel Cervantes, SVP of National Expansion & Strategic Initiatives for Skills for America's Future, and Camille DeCicco, director of Social Impact for Discover Financial Services, join me to discuss the national expansion of an eleven-year-old Chicago-area nonprofit that works with local employers to put unemployed and underemployed residents to work in good jobs. Skills for Chicagoland's Future launched in 2012 with what they call a "jobs-first workforce approach," working directly with employers to identify their hiring needs and then connecting candidates from Chicago's historically underinvested communities directly to hiring managers. Of the roughly 12,000 people who they've placed in jobs in Chicago, 70% are from South and West sides of the city. Daniel Cervantes was there at its start. "Skills for Chicagoland's Future was launched on the heels of the financial recession and really at the heart of it is we started to see that in workforce development there was an opportunity to actually start and engage and go deep with employers in order to drive greater access to historically-untapped talent," he explains. "What we saw over the course of time is if we can go work closely with an employer to really understand what their talent pain points were, we could work backwards and not only create greater access, but also work with community-based organizations and talent providers to support them in terms of giving their clients an opportunity," Cervantes tells me. The giant financial firm Discover, based in the northern suburb of Riverwoods, is an example of an employer who works with Skills in Chicago. The decision to build a new call center in the Chatham neighborhood on the city's South Side came from CEO Roger Hochschild who had come to believe that corporate site selection is an extremely biased process. DeCicco, says, "We had not opened a new call center in over 20 years and we had never done it in an underserved community, so (Skills was) really our guide throughout. Once we decided where, Skills became our consultant in many of the natural ways that any consultant is." "From a finding talent perspective, it was using what they already knew within the community – both the organizations connections, but also the ways in which you reach and find trust with the community, how you listen, how you embed yourself, and then how you help them trust you that this is real," she adds. Since its opening, the Discover call center has hired more than 1,000 residents on the South Side of Chicago. This workforce model of understanding an employers hiring needs and long-term goals, then serving as a community connector and advocate has also proven effective in Rhode Island, where it's found jobs for seven thousand local residents. And earlier this spring, the organization expanded to Phoenix with Connect to Work AZ, a new partnership with the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation. Now, Skills for America's Future has a bigger goal – 25 new cities over the next decade – using the model perfected in Chicago. Cervantes is leading that expansion and he says there is a lot of opportunity to reimagine how workforce development typically has been approached. "Where you live should not dictate your economic opportunities. Talent is everywhere, but access is often not. I'm optimistic that major employers will be able to talk to each other, they'll see the benefits of doing the types of things that an organization like Discover's doing, and realize that it truly does benefit the organization as a whole, retention, mobility, but ultimately it benefits the communities in which each of us have a stake in." It's one of the fastest-growing entrepreneurial beverage brands in recent memory, but while Super Coffee appears to be sprinting towards an exit, brothers and co-founders Jim, Jake and Jordan DeCicco often say that they're just getting warmed up. In the seven years since Jordan created the brand in his college dorm room, Super Coffee has become a significant player in the multi-billion dollar RTD coffee category. Over the past two years, the company has ramped up distribution via a partnership with beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev and fueled an expansion into new retail channels supported by a $106 million Series C funding round completed at a valuation of $500 million. Earlier this year, Super Coffee announced its foray into energy drinks with Super Energy, a line of premium sparkling beverages made with natural ingredients. While the brand continues to be on a positive trajectory, operational challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and an increasingly rigid M&A environment for beverage brands have required the DeCicco brothers to reconsider and revise parts of their business, including Super Coffee's core line of products. In an interview featured as part of Taste Radio's live podcast and meetup event in Austin, which was held in September, the DeCicco brothers spoke about how shifting headwinds have influenced recent business decisions, the impact of Covid on innovation and what they learned from being on the front lines of distribution and merchandising since the outset of the pandemic. They also explained the value of being “the world's foremost experts on Super Coffee” and how they communicate exit planning to the Super Coffee team. Show notes: 0:45: Jim, Jake & Jordan DeCicco, Co-Founders, Super Coffee – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif shared his admiration for the Super Coffee office and asked the DeCicco brothers to express their seven years in business in a single word. Jim spoke about how the team assesses when and how to ask for advice, Jordan discussed their process for adding a strategic advisor or investor to the company and Jake explained why Super Coffee extended the brand into energy drinks. Later, the brothers spoke about the brand's shift toward indulgent flavors and why there was (and continues to be) some disagreement about their blueberry muffin variety, their belief that “our job starts after the product gets on shelves” and why maximizing value for the company's investors and partners is the key to an optimal exit. Brands in this episode: Super Coffee, Bai, Honest Tea, Zico, Celsius
Known by most as “Sammy The Bull”, Salvatore Gravano was born on March 12th, 1945 in Bensonhurst, a Brooklyn neighborhood with a predominantly Italian-American population to Gerry and Kay Gravano, both of whom hailed from Sicily. Gravano fell into crime at an early age. Around the age of ten, his bicycle was stolen by a group of older bullies. A group of mobsters who were watching from a cafe when he confronted the thieves remarked how little Sammy fought “like a bull” while taking on several larger kids at once, earning him the nickname “The Bull”. At the age of 14 he joined the Rampers, a prominent street gang in Bensonhurst. Despite his father's attempts to dissuade him, like many of his Ramper colleagues, Gravano drifted into the Cosa Nostra. The mafia had a longstanding presence in the Bensonhurst neighborhood. In 1970, Sammy The Bull made his first kill for the Colombo family. Upon Colombo associate Shorty Spero's suggestion and to avoid further conflict, Gravano moved from the Colombo family to the Gambino family and joined Salvatore “Toddo” Aurello's crew. He became heavily involved in the construction industry. In 1985, he was involved in the corporate takeover and removal of Paul Castellano. John Gotti was unanimously elected as boss who named DeCicco as underboss and Gravano as captain. After DeCicco's death in 1986, Gravano's specific position within the family varied. Eventually, he was named by Gotti as underboss. Gravano pleaded guilty to a superseding racketeering charge. After 11 months alongside Gotti in prison and a total of 23 years in the mob, he decided to cooperate, formally agreeing to testify on November 13th, 1991. He was released from prison in 1994 and entered into the Federal Witness Protection Program. In 1996, Gravano co-wrote a book about his life, Underboss. He began living very openly and appeared in a nationally televised interview with journalist Diane Sawyer. In 2000, Gravano was implicated in an international ecstasy ring. On September 7, 2002, he was sentenced in New York to 20 years on the federal charges. He was released early, in September of 2017. Currently, Gravano resides in Phoenix and is working on several media projects
