Robocop 3 is the embodiment of when a franchise has creatively exhausted itself. It feels and looks cheap; has nothing new to say; and tones down the series' signature violence to milk the most out of a dwindling audience. For fans of the series, its existence must be heartbreaking. Robocop 3's ineptitude is on par with other disastrous sequels of the era, like Superman IV. That is really all you can say about it. It recycles plot points from the first film and shamelessly calls back to things you loved from that one, as well. Its only novel introduction is a robot ninja assassin, whose fights with Robocop are so painfully slow, you will be tempted to watch them in 2x speed. Thus, Robocop 3's 6% on Rotten Tomatoes should not come as a shock; but you should be dumbstruck to discover that it out-grossed its predecessor. Even with the PG-13 rating, that is astounding. Poor Murphy! Now, sit back, optimize your prime directives with a Screamsickle from Six Point Brewery, and close your eyes during the jetpack scene! Scientists Are Trying To Study Human Neurons… In Rat Brains? Scientists have a tricky time studying neurons, partially because they are remarkably difficult to grow in a lab. They need other cells around them, and they don't replicate or reproduce like other cells do. In a new study in Nature, researchers figured out that they can take a ball of human brain tissue and frankenstein it into a rat's brain, and the rat can respond to it. This exciting discovery could offer scientists a new way to study the human brain. This week's co-host Kathleen Davis talks with Umair Irfan, staff writer at Vox, about this story and other science news of the week. They chat about neurons that can play ping pong, COVID updates, a disturbing uptick in STI cases, how deep sea mining could destroy an underappreciated ecosystem, and how a mummified dinosaur named Dakota is challenging what paleontologists knew about dino preservation.   How Gamification Has Crept Into School, Work, And Fitness Gamers often spend hours embarking on quests, unlocking new levels, and collecting badges. But what about when aspects of games start popping up in other parts of life—like work, school, and exercise? Adrian Hon created the fitness app “Zombies, Run!” and has thought a lot about how the principles of gaming have crept into so many different corners of our lives, and why it may not always be as innocent as it seems. Ira and co-host Kathleen Davis talk with Adrian Hon, author of You've Been Played: How Corporations, Governments, and Schools Use Games to Control Us All. Hon is also the CEO and founder of the game developer, Six to Start, based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.   A Taste Of New York In A Hyper-Local Beer If you're a person who enjoys beer, you've likely been aware of the craft beer boom of the last couple of decades. India Pale Ales, or IPAs, have become some of the most popular types of beer brewed in local breweries. But it doesn't get more local than a type of beer that most people have never heard of: the gruit. The gruit traces its origins back to the 11th century. Historically, instead of hops, brewers used herbs and spices native to wherever they lived. This results in a flavorful beer that changes taste depending on the plant life in the region. Fast forward a few hundred years to now, and you'll find brewers getting back to this hyper-local brewing tradition. Those brewers include Isaac Patient, head brewer of Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn, New York. His team partnered with Saara Nafici and Brendan Parker at Red Hook Farms to procure four key herbs for the brew: rosemary, tarragon, lemongrass, and mugwort.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

This week, my guest is Bill Covaleski. He's the brewmaster and co-founder of Victory Brewing Company. This year, Bill and co-founder Ron Barchet are celebrating 25 years of Victory.  As someone who has successfully built and run a business for 25 years, Bill drops a lot of knowledge, and I think it's beneficial whether you are running your own business, or have employees that report to you.Bill talks about how he got into brewing, and the decision to start a brewery with his best friend Ron Barchet. We talk about trends in the industry, discussing everything from beer styles, to seltzers and non-alcoholic beer. In 2016 Victory became part of Artisanal Brewing Ventures, which also includes Southern Tier Brewing and Sixpoint Brewery. I asked Bill about that decision, and if he worried about being considered a sellout for becoming part of “big beer”. Also, this week I'm doing something different. I wanted to work on some exclusive recipes using Victory beer. For this, I partnered with blogger Marilyn Johnson from the blog Philly Grub. The first recipe is scrapple tacos with an apple/fennel/celery slaw, and served with an aji panca salsa using Victory's Prima Pils. The second recipe is Oktoberfest Beer Truffles, using Utz pretzels and Victory's Festbier. Head over to PhillyGrub.blog to find these exclusive recipes. Looking to hire employees for your restaurant? Back Paddle Brewing brings craft beer to tiny Lincolnton, Georgia Back Paddle Brewing is a newer brewery in the small town of  Lincolnton, GA.  They are the first, and only, brewery in town and in an area that isn't exactly craft-focused.  Owner Kyle McCloud and Head Brewer Jason Slater spend time with their new customers educating them on craft beer but they still get plenty of people looking for something that "tastes like Bud Light." McCloud opened his brewery on a tight budget and built much of the space himself, including his brewhouse.  Without the budget for expensive, jacketed fermenters that would allowing cooling his beer to proper fermentation temperatures for most yeast he decided to brew with all kveik and Norwegian Farmhouse yeasts instead.  These unique yeasts are able to do their work at higher temperatures than most others.  Back Paddle offers many styles that you don't typically see using kveik, like an Imperial Stout and Scottish Ale.  We also discuss the brewery's mission to support his community through his #beer4good program and donate to veterans' organizations.  [caption id="attachment_47626" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Back Paddle Owner Kyle McCloud presents a check to The Fallen Outdoors Georgia Chapter as part of his #beer4good program. Sixpoint Brewery talks Cicerone certification, crispy lagers, and nuclear submarines Sixpoint Brewery first came to recognition for their bright Resin DIPA.  As the name implies, this isn't a hazy and fruity beer.  Resin packs a punch of pine and citrus to quench your thirst for that West Coast goodness.  Education and Training Manager Max Finnance wants you to enjoy Resin, and all your beers, a bit more and he joins us this week to talk about just how to do that. Before his life in beer Finnance was stationed on a nuclear submarine and tells us some of the science background he gained has helped in his brewery life.  He's a certified Advanced Cicerone as well as a BJCP Certified beer judge.  Read, he knows his beer.  He admits that this type of in-depth education isn't for everyone but if you're a passionate beer fan you can still learn a bit more about your beers, and how to drink them.  Sure, we all think we know how to drink, but do we really?  Some of the classes he teaches are designed to educate retailers, distributors, and employees on the art of beer.  How to properly store, serve, and sip your brews.  Finnance enjoys traveling and sharing his knowledge but with the Covid Curse upon us he's taken his classes online. Hazy IPAs still rule when it comes to questions he gets about beer, but he'd also like everyone to know more about lagers.  There's a huge variety out there well beyond the Crispy Boy pilsners but lagers still have a reputation with many people as clear and light beers.  If you're in a larger area it's likely there's a local brewery brewing up a variety of lagers, so take a trip and see what's on tap. As a silver lining to the Covid cloud, Sixpoint has been able to take advantage of some temporary laws to host an outdoor tasting room.  A more permanent taproom (or two) is in the works, although there have been some delays due to landlord issues.  Follow Sixpoint on social media to get the scoop as thing develop. Craft Beer News – 11/23/18Artisanal Brewing Ventures Execs Discuss ‘100 percent’ Acquisition of Sixpoint BreweryAfter four years of discussions with Sixpoint Brewery founder Shane Welch, Artisanal Brewing Ventures (ABV) finally completed a deal to purchase 100 percent of his Brooklyn-based craft brewery this week.Even though ABV had been courting Sixpoint for several years, it wasn’t until this summer when negotiations really began to heat up, John Coleman, CEO of ABV, told Brewbound. As the deal came together, ABV — which is backed by family office Ulysses Management and was formed in 2016 via the merger of Victory Brewing and Southern Tier Brewing — turned to Wells Fargo to help finance the acquisition.Coleman declined to share specific financial terms of the transaction.Unlike ABV’s partnerships with Victory and Southern Tier, whose founders have remained involved in the businesses they started, Welch is exiting the company he founded in 2004 to focus on other “craft beer-related businesses,” including a smartphone app that helps facilitate direct-to-consumer sales at breweries.Although ABV’s past strategy has focused on retaining its partner breweries’ founders, the company decided it needed to be more flexible when it came to Sixpoint, Paul Barnett, managing director of Ulysses Management, told Brewbound.“Shane has a lot of other outside interests, which he’s passionate about,” he said. “He struggled with the idea of the obligations that are inherent in being an active founder partner like Bill [Covaleski] and Ron [Barchet of Victory] and Phin [DeMink of Southern Tier].”Now, Sixpoint brewmaster and chief product officer Eric Bachli will lead the company. Last year, Welch hired Bachli away from popular Massachusetts craft brewery Trillium Brewing.According to Coleman and Barnett, Sixpoint was an attractive acquisition target for ABV due to its geographical presence in New York City, where the brewery sells more than half of its volume, as well as its alignment within the Sheehan Family network of wholesalers.“We think there’s a lot of growth potential in metro New York as well as all of the surrounding areas,” Coleman said. “And from a brewing standpoint, the brands are all very complimentary with Southern Tier and Victory brands.”According to Coleman, Sixpoint is on pace to produce 55,000 barrels of beer by the end of 2018. The company did not report production figures to the Brewers Association last year, but in 2016 it reported production of 74,500 barrels. Finally, Barnett and Coleman said ABV isn’t done buying, and they mentioned a focus on breweries located in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Southeast regions of the U.S..“The east of the Mississippi geography we find is really an attractive market,” Barnett said.TTB Accepts Offer for Trade Practice ViolationsTTB and Elgin Beverage Agree to $325,000 Offer in CompromiseThe Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) yesterday announced the acceptance of a $325,000 offer in compromise from Illinois distributor Elgin Beverage Co. for alleged violations of tied house provisions.Elgin, based in Bartlett, about 35 miles from Chicago, distributes products from Constellation Brands, Pabst Brewing and FIFCO USA, among others. In a press release, the TTB said Elgin had “aided and abetted another industry member in the use of a third party to pay retailers to carry and promote their products.”The pay-to-play scheme, the TTB argued, gave Elgin an “unfair advantage” in the marketplace.“TTB remains committed to putting an end to anti-competitive practices that hurt law-abiding businesses and prevent consumers from enjoying a wide selection of products,” the agency wrote.Earlier this month, the TTB issued an industry circular reminding alcohol beverage companies that it was “committed to ensuring a fair and level playing field nationwide.” In that announcement, the TTB noted that it had “significantly intensified” its enforcement (which began in 2017), and that it was focused on snuffing out “exclusive outlet, tied house, commercial bribery, and consignment sale violations.”“The high incidence of unlawful activities and deliberate concealment of such activities raise serious concerns,” the agency wrote. “These activities are of particular significance because of their nationwide occurrence and their impact on trade and fair competition.”In May, the TTB accepted a $900,000 offer in compromise from Warsteiner Importers Agency Inc. — “the largest single offer in compromise for trade practice violations” ever accepted by the agency. The Ohio-based company was accused of engaging in illegal tied house, commercial bribery and exclusive outlet violations committed in order to compromise a retailer’s independence from January 1, 2015, through April 19, 2018.BA Chief Economist: Brewery Visits are Good for Beer Industry HealthIn his latest blog post, Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson said “getting people into breweries is a good thing for the beer industry.”His rationale? Recent Nielsen CGA data that suggests beer drinkers who visit breweries drink more beer, while those who do not visit breweries drink less.Conversely, 24 percent of more than 4,300 consumers who hadn’t visited a brewery in the last year and were also asked about their consumption habits said they were drinking more beer, while 28 percent said they were drinking less.“Now, as someone who cares about good analysis, I won’t pretend that this means going to a brewery is causing people to drink more beer,” Watson wrote. “The causality might run the other way: people who are drinking more beer might be seeking out breweries.”Nevertheless, Watson said all players throughout the three-tier system need to “actively try to recreate the reasons people go to breweries.”His pitch to beer distributors, some of whom have expressed concerns about the proliferation of brewery taprooms?“If these beer lovers are drinking a typical amount, their beer consumption is going up far more than at-the-brewery sales alone, suggesting once again that brewery visits spill out into the wider market and help build brand beer,” he wrote.Massachusetts to Commence Recreational Cannabis Sales on November 20The first legal recreational cannabis sales east of the Mississippi will occur next Tuesday in Massachusetts, The Boston Globe reported Friday. In a press release, the state’s Cannabis Control Commission announced that it had approved two companies — Cultivate Holdings, LLC and New England Treatment Access, LLC – to begin selling marijuana and marijuana products.“This signal to open retail marijuana establishments marks a major milestone for voters who approved legal, adult-use cannabis in our state,” commission chairman Steven J. Hoffman said via a press release. “To get here, licensees underwent thorough background checks, passed multiple inspections, and had their products tested, all to ensure public health and safety as this new industry gets up and running.”It took lawmakers and regulators more than two years to finally approve cannabis sales after Massachusetts voters passed a 2016 ballot initiative making recreational cannabis legal.Source of News Stories: Brewboundhttps://www.brewbound.com/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHSubscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. In the first episode of On the Road with Beer Sessions Radio, you will travel with us to the Hudson Valley region. Although it’s only about an hour’s drive from New York City, you feel like you’re in a different world. The Hudson Valley is an historic beer-making region, but with the rise of industrialization and cheap transportation, breweries virtually disappeared for most of the 20th century. Then, in the last few years, locals again began to appreciate and demand craft, local beer, which attracted experienced brewers to the region to open their first ever breweries. The brewers wanted to make their beer in a traditional ways with ties to the community and local products, like it was made in the region over 100 years ago. Thus, Beer Sessions host Jimmy Carbone dubbed them “the new primitives.” From The Ground Brewery: From The Ground Brewery is a labor of love for Jakob Cirell, owner and brewer. A mechanical engineer by trade, Jake pursues his passion brewing at the Migliorelli farm in Red Hook, New York. Hudson Valley ingredients and produce from the Migliorelli Farm play a starring role in Jakob’s beers. What's most extraordinary about From The Ground brewery is its small-batch operation. As a one-man operation, Jake's hands are in every step of the making process. The beers can be found at Hudson Valley restaurants and bars, local farmers' markets and a couple of farmers' markets in New York City. Migliorelli Farm: The farms in the Hudson Valley region of Upstate New York increasingly supply local breweries with the fine ingredients required to brew world-class beer. In 2013, the Migliorelli Farm, a third generation family-owned operation that specializes in vegetables and fruits, began growing barley with brewers in mind. Ken Migliorelli runs the show at the farm and shared the rich history about his family's farming practices with us. Barley has been both an investment and a passion project, and Ken has an expansive vision for it in the years ahead. Hudson Valley Malt: After the grains have been selected and harvested at the farm, the next step in the beer making process is to allow the grains to germinate by soaking in water. Then, they are halted from germinating further by drying with hot air. This process is called malting. Dennis and Jeanette Nesel converted part of their horse barn into a malting facility a year ago. They convert the barley into malt the way it was done over a hundred years ago. Mr. Nesel likes to refer to the process as “old-school heritage malting”. The husband and wife team have been working very closely with local Migliorelli Farm and From the Ground Brewery in a beautiful symbiosis. Suarez Family Brewery: Opening a brewery is no easy task; it’s a gigantic endeavor with many things that are out of the brewer’s control. Dan and Taylor Suarez are facing all of these obstacles, but that has not changed his calm nature even a little bit. We met Dan and Taylor at their brewery and tasting room. Together they have been working hard for the past year to get their space up and running and sorting out unexpected delays. Taylor has been taking care of the operations and business part of the brewery while also attending to her own company, Good Food Jobs. Dan’s reknowned in the beer world through his experience at breweries such as Sixpoint Brewery in New York City, Hill Farmstead in Vermont and OEC in Connecticut. His brewery, opening this summer, is highly anticipated. Plan Bee Farm Brewery: Located inside a barn built almost 200 years ago in Poughkeepsie, New York, we arrived to Plan Bee Farm Brewery’s 25 acre farm. Everything grown on the farm is used to make Evan and Emily Watson’s beer. Equipped with a 10 barrel brew house, they have been brewing their beers since October 2015 in their new home. Evan and Emily are a husband and wife team who specialize in farmhouse ales, or as Evan likes to call them “Barn Beer,” as well as coolship or open fermentation beers. Evan and Emily Watson are the owners and masterminds behind Plan Bee Farm Brewery. Evan is also an accomplished musician and has toured with Heart and Def Leppard. He named his brewery both after the bees that provide the microflora open fermentation for his beer as well as the fact that beer-making was a second choice career path for him. Daughters Fare and Ale: Daughters Fare and Ale is a culinary partnership between Ryan and Rachel McLaughlin, local restaurateurs offering simple, delicious food and a lineup of seasonal, locally-brewed craft beers. Ryan and Rachel share a background in the culinary industry, having worked in several well renowned restaurants in New York City before making the move to the Hudson Valley. They both appreciate good beer and thoughtfully select a short, solid draft list that is constantly in rotation. Valuing their community, Ryan and Rachel source foods for their restaurant from Hudson Valley producers as often as possible. They're committed to buying from neighboring farmers and maintaining relationships with nearby brewers to serve their beers fresh, on draft. Daughters Fare and Ale is an ideal gathering place for locals and passers-by to gather around the table for a nice meal and to sit back and enjoy a beer or two. It has a friendly, welcoming vibe that has a way of making everyone feel right at home.

Tune in to this week's Beer Sessions Radio as host Jimmy Carbone and winter co-host Anne Becerra welcome Joe and Chris DeCicco of DeCicco Family Markets as well as Lars Dahlhaus, Eastern Sales Manager at Fentiman’s Inc, plus special guests from NYC's Fraunces Tavern. Anne Becerra is still shocked that she's been able to turn her love for craft beer into a career. She was the first female Certified Cicerone in New York City and has been at the helm of some of the best craft beer bars in Manhattan for the last seven years, most recently at The Blind Tiger, The Ginger Man and as Beer Director for Taproom 307. Anne is a beer writer for Serious Eats and Martha Stewart Living, and has been featured multiple times on NBC, Fox and Friends and CNN as well as contributed to TIME Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Wall Street Journal, Sirius XM, USA Today and more. She was the only speaker at both Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans and the Women’s Chef and Restaurateur Conference in NYC to represent the beer industry, and believes the best part about craft beer is sharing it. You can catch her teaching classes, judging beer competitions, hosting beer dinners and weekly tasting events, and curating beer pairings throughout the tri-state area. The three young scions of the family that founded the Westchester/Rockland DeCicco Markets dynasty—Joe and his cousins, brothers Chris and John—all share a passion for beer. The trio used the unglamorous fact that they were born into a supermarket family to launch themselves as heavy players in the local beer world. Look for the 10 DeCicco stores in Westchester and Rockland to carry between 400 and 1000+ beers each. Meanwhile, several of the DeCicco stores (Pelham, Harrison, Ardsley, Armonk, Cornwall, and Brewster) offer taps for growler fills. And two of the DeCicco Markets (Armonk and Brewster) actually offer craft-beer bars on the premises, which means that you can catch a buzz before doing your weekly shopping. The Armonk DeCicco is located next to Fortina and offers 28 taps for growler refills or for just hanging around drinking. Look for the DeCicco boys to collaborate with several local brewers including Sixpoint Brewery, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, and Evil Twin Brewing. Also, look for DeCicco’s sponsorship at many local beer events, including Savor New York. Lars has a new company called "Liquid Projects" which incorporated in April of 2015. As the president of Schwelmer Beer Imports N.A., Lars has been importing the Craft Beers from his hometown as well as other Bavarian beers such as Lammsbrau, Miltenberger, Meckatzer and Eichbaum to name a few since 2003. From 2011 to 2014 Lars has been the Craft Beer Portfolio Manager at St. Killian, responsible for such renowned brands as Wuerzburger and again Lammsbrau. During his time there he launched and established Crabbie’s from the UK, 961 from Lebanon, Andechs and Rothaus from Germany. The burning desire to offer an innovative and cost-effective way to international producers is what started Liquid Projects. Lars has been a resident of Williamsburg, Brooklyn for 18 years.

Season 2, Episode 41 – This week, beers from Sixpoint Brewery, a super-yummy hoppy pale ale from our local friends, Wicks Brewing Company, sprinkles of Almanac Brewing Company’s Citra Sour, and some in-depth homebrew discussion on Quad recipe formulation. This week on the show, we’re taking a trip to Brooklyn, New York (we’re not really there, duh) to get some of that sweet Sixpoint Brewery action! Wicks Brewing Company – Paladin Pale Ale But first, we start with a new segment on the show, the 4B Mailbag! To accompany the Mailbag segment, we’re drinking a delicious beer from a local favorite of ours, and many in the Inland Empire of southern California, Wicks Brewing Company’s Paladin Pale Ale. This beer is Wicks’ first official bottle release that has made its way to shelves, and it’s superb. A super-hoppy and danky pale ale that has the punch of an IPA with the ABV of a pale ale. This is no session ale, folks…it’s a pale ale, and it’s delicious. Sixpoint Brewery Beers Next up are the Sixpoint Brewery beers. Thanks to 4B friend and Patreoneer, Scott McElhone, we were able to get our hands on three six-packs of Sixpoint brews that aren’t distributed in southern California. We’re trying to branch out, people!  First is The Crisp. John thinks this is one of the coolest beer names for a lager, and the beer inside of this Sixpoint brew does not fall short of its name. It’s quite tasty and damn near perfect. Next is Sweet Action. We didn’t quite figure out what this beer was, exactly (turns out it’s a cream ale), but it did spur some conversation regarding guitars, bands, and Wayne’s World. Finally is the much sought after Resin. For an east coast IPA, this beer delivers. We beer drinkers in California often criticize east coast IPA for its over the top malt character and seemingly lackluster hop profile. This beer is not that. It quite good and unique for the style. The malts are definitely there, but they take a middle seat to the wonderful hop profile. It’s a solid IPA that’s worthy of the hype that precedes it. We wrap up the show with Citra Sour from Almanac Beer Co. while discussing possible beer recipes for a Quad that Greg wants to age in a rye whiskey barrel he acquired from Re:Find Distillery. Quadruple style beers can be difficult to brew. Barrel aging can also be quite difficult. We try to put it all in perspective. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
