GDP Script/ Top Stories for August 16th Publish Date: August 16th PRE-ROLL: MONSTER JAM From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, August 16th and Happy Birthday to Madonna I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Archer student donating to needy gets big surprise from Amazon Gwinnett school tax rate going down, but property owners will still owe more Author Leigh Dunlap to discuss debut book 'Bless Your Heart' at Duluth library Plus, the Stripers report with pitcher Dane Dunning All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Archer student donating to needy gets big surprise from Amazon Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that spark the biggest change. Nehemiah Hamilton, a senior at Archer High, used to dream of coding the next billion-dollar app. But after diving into community programs like Gwinnett’s Youth Commission and interning for Dacula’s mayor, his focus shifted. He didn’t just want to make millions—he wanted to help millions. So, he started “The Little Things,” a fundraiser to buy essentials low-income families often go without: detergent, toiletries, underwear, umbrellas. Especially umbrellas. Nehemiah set a modest goal—$500. Two weeks later, he’d raised over $2,000. Then, Amazon stepped in. After Gwinnett Chairwoman Nicole Love-Hendrickson shared his story on LinkedIn, Amazon’s Georgia community affairs lead, Terreta Rodgers, showed up with a truck. Literally. 3,600 items. Triple his donation. Nehemiah’s not stopping. He’s thinking about Morehouse, public service, maybe even running for office someday. But for now? He’s extending his fundraiser and calling on others to step up. STORY 2: Gwinnett school tax rate going down, but property owners will still owe more The Gwinnett County Board of Education voted Wednesday to lower the property tax rate by nearly half a mill—sounds like good news, right? Not so fast. Even with the drop to 20.15 mills, many property owners will still see higher tax bills, thanks to rising property values. Board Vice Chair Tarece Johnson-Morgan wasn’t thrilled, casting the lone “no” vote. Meanwhile, residents like Kay Vickers didn’t hold back. She slammed the board for firing two superintendents in four years (with pricey buyouts) and ignoring overcrowding at schools like Grayson High. The board’s decision followed three public hearings, but the tension? Far from over. STORY 3: Author Leigh Dunlap to discuss debut book 'Bless Your Heart' at Duluth library Mark your calendars: On Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m., the Duluth Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library will host Leigh Dunlap, author of the debut novel Bless Your Heart. The event, moderated by Iranian-American writer Samira Shakib-Bregeth, promises a lively discussion about family, reinvention, and the quirks of Southern hospitality—or lack thereof. Dunlap, best known for penning A Cinderella Story (yes, the one with Hilary Duff), brings her screenwriting chops to the page. She splits her time between South Carolina and South Kensington and has also written The Standoff and 16-Love. For details, visit gwinnettpl.org. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 7 STRIPERS INTERVIEW Break 3: MONSTER JAM STORY 6: Three family members guilty of pandemic fraud A man from Pelham, Georgia, has been found guilty of wire fraud in a pandemic relief scam that roped in his family. Tyreek Brown, 28, now faces up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a $1 million fine. Sentencing? TBD. His co-conspirators, Sherronica Jackson, 38, and Alan Brown, 52, both pleaded guilty and will be sentenced Nov. 12. Here’s the deal: Jackson snagged a $20,207 PPP loan in 2021, claiming a fake $97,000 income. She then helped Alan and Tyreek secure fraudulent loans for businesses that didn’t exist. Tyreek even sent her $3,000 after cashing in. STORY 7: Georgia unemployment rate down to 3.4% Georgia’s unemployment rate dipped to 3.4% last month, down just a tick from June’s 3.5%, according to the state Department of Labor. For context? That’s well below the national rate of 4.2%. But here’s the twist: while unemployment dropped, the state actually lost 500 jobs, leaving the total just shy of 5 million. Gains in health care (+2,800), manufacturing (+2,700), and construction (+2,100) couldn’t offset losses in food services (-4,500) and transportation (-1,400). Meanwhile, Georgia’s labor force grew slightly, with 732 more people joining in July. We’ll have closing comments after this Break 4: MONSTER JAM Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Born and raised in England, Susan Notter started baking at a young age, then attended culinary school while working in a pastry shop. After graduating, Chef Notter had the opportunity to work in Germany for Konditorei Heinmann, where she spent three years learning about European pastries and confections. Switzerland followed, and more experience with chocolate at Confiserie Bachmann in Luzern and Confiserie Honold in Zurich. While working in Zurich, Susan started taking sugar classes with Ewald Notter, who had just started the sugar school in Zurich. After a few months, Susan joined the school full-time, gaining more experience with pulled and blown sugar and eventually teaching classes alongside Ewald. The school grew and became internationally renowned; this led to world- wide travel, including to the U.S. to teach and demonstrate the art of pulled and blown sugar to many chefs. In 2000, Susan moved to Alabama to open the Pastry and Baking division of Culinard, at Virginia College. Chef Notter has spent many years in the education field, teaching and as program director of pastry arts programs. In addition to this she has represented the country multiple times and the Culinary Olympics in Germany, placed 3rd at the Queen of Pastry in Italy and successfully coached 1st and 2nd place winners at the same competition. Currently, Chef Notter is the pastry coach of the USA Culinary Olympic Team, which represents the USA in international culinary competitions. She has appeared on numerous Food Network shows, including Halloween Wars, where she had the honor of being part of the winning team on the first season. After spending the past four years as one of Felchlin‘s Corporate Pastry Chefs representing the company with technical support for the U.S. market, Chef Notter has now opened Elizabeth Moore Chocolates, where she is creating fine European chocolates, single-origin chocolate bars, teaching classes and designing special occasion sugar and chocolate showpieces. In this episode, we discuss: How Susan discovered her love of baking Culinary school and an apprenticeship at Konditorei Heinmann Jobs in Zurich and her introduction to pulled sugar Teaching sugar classes and giving demos all over the world Implementing college pastry programs in Alabama and Pennsylvania Working as a Corporate Pastry Chef at Felchlin Competing in pastry at the elite level Opening Elizabeth Moore Chocolates, a luxury boutique in Pelham, Alabama Susan's best tip for tempering chocolate And much more! This week on Babel, Jon Alterman speaks with Nicolas Pelham, the Middle East correspondent for The Economist. Nicolas has worked in the Middle East and North Africa for more than 30 years and has reported from every state in the region. Together, they discuss his latest article, “The Great Pretender: How Ahmed al-Sharaa Won Syria,” an in-depth profile of the Syrian leader based in part on a mid-February interview. Transcript: "Nicolas Pelham: Ahmed al-Sharaa and Syria's Future," CSIS, March 20, 2025. Nicolas' article: "The Great Pretender: How Ahmed al-Sharaa Won Syria," The Economist, March 5, 2025.
This week, Gene HackMarch continues with an outstanding acting showdown between two of the all-time greats of American screen acting, as our man Gene stands tete-a-tete with Denzel down in the briny deep with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. It's 1995's Crimson Tide, directed by Tony Scott, featuring script punch-up from Quentin Tarantino, and starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortensen, James Gandolfini, George Dzundza, Matt Craven, Danny Nucci, Steve Zahn and Daniel von Bargen. A naval submarine thriller of the highest order, it's the first of five collaborations between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, and while it's easily the high water mark of the bunch it's also plain to see why they would be eager to re-team time and time again to try to recapture this magic. The acting showdown at the heart of this movie's conflict is its greatest spectacle, and while the movie got shut out at the Oscars come awards season, it was nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, losing all three. Womp womp. Plus: Hayley's been to the cinema and is back with a theatrical field report on the new Bong, Mickey 17! And J Mo is hooked on The Traitors. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our conversation, Crimson Tide is available to stream on Disney+. Other works discussed on this episode include Snowpiercer, Okja, The Host, Poor Things, Mississippi Burning, The Rock, The Domino Principle, Big Brother, The Mole, Josie and the Pussycats, The Hunt For Red October, The Pelican Brief, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), Unstoppable, and Deja Vu among others. Gene HackMarch rolls on next week with 1974's The Conversation, though you can bet the Tony Scott talk with continue as we will surely be talking more about its 90s spiritual sequel (and Crimson Tide follow-up) Enemy of the State as well. The Conversation is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel, while Enemy of the State can be found on Disney+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Despite dealing with many natural disasters, the longtime cowboy and rancher has remained devoted to the cowboy life for four decades. Pelham wasn't raised on a ranch, but he stepped into the cattle business as a young man. He worked on the famous Spade Ranches for many years, but now he runs cows with his daughter and son-in-law. Here, he discusses wildfires, freezing weather, great horses, and impressive people who have shaped his life. The review of 2024 films are in full swing, but first there is the annual look back at the movies seen last year that were NOT FROM last year. Its the NOT 2024 Top Ten, where we highlight films worthy of a second discussion because they just impacted us so much. And for the 3rd year running on this particular episode, Dave, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl welcome in Friend of the Show, streaming live from the freezing metropolis somewhere in Bainbridge, Wyoming, that is one Jacob "Roth from Wyoming." Together, the foursome discuss their top ten faves of the year from all over the place, as far back as the early 20s and 30s to all the way through the 60s and 70s and in 2010s and 2020s... assigned movies come into play as films others were asked to watch appear in various Top Tens, while Burgess recommended movies keep coming up as well. Mikey is loving some old Gena Rowland and Walter Matthau as an action star, while #XLessDrEarl digs into more music docs, Dave revisits a Hallmark fave, and Roth finally sets sail on the ship of dreams. Plus, why did Green Book get so much hate, Eastwood represents (even if he is a d-bag of a romantic partner) and Powers Boothe makes another list. Also... Garrison makes a random appearance with lots of Chucky Grodin love. Whether you're smart enough to know we're going to have some wind and fires in SoCal (duhh) or it's about a healthy distrust of government (kind'a like "technology", "gov't" is not on your side), a good gearhead just needs a reason not to be the meat in the seat. A gearhead also needs a good soundtrack - how about some Monster Magnet, with drops from Pelham 1-2-3 (one of the best NYC-based caper movies ever made - it nails '70s NY atmosphere). Take a dive - logic's fine: prepping for disaster is a badge of honor (plus, you get to keep your house and classic cars). You'll also avoid being one of the CA sheeple who 50 years of bad fire-prevention couldn't teach. May you broadcast in interesting times...

Discover who wrote most of the Rascals songs. Find out what ex lead singer and founder Felix Cavaliere is doing now and learn all about one of the greatest bands of the '60s. Felix Cavaliere is a celebrated musician, songwriter, and vocalist, widely regarded as a pioneer of blue-eyed soul. Born in Pelham, New York, Cavaliere was introduced to music at an early age, taking classical piano lessons under his mother's encouragement. While initially drawn to classical music, he soon discovered his passion for rhythm and blues, inspired by legends like Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye. Cavaliere pursued pre-med studies at Syracuse University but found himself increasingly immersed in music, forming his first band, The Escorts, while still in college. His decision to follow his musical aspirations led him to New York City's thriving music scene in the early 1960s. In 1965, Cavaliere co-founded The Rascals (originally called The Young Rascals) with Eddie Brigati, Gene Cornish, and Dino Danelli. The group became synonymous with the era's evolving rock and soul movement, producing a string of iconic hits that combined soulful melodies with socially conscious lyrics. Cavaliere's distinctive voice and masterful Hammond organ playing defined hits like "Good Lovin'," which topped the charts in 1966, followed by enduring classics like "Groovin'," "A Beautiful Morning," and "People Got to Be Free." The latter, inspired by the civil rights movement, became an anthem for unity and social justice. As the principal songwriter for The Rascals, Felix played a crucial role in shaping the band's innovative sound, which bridged the gap between rock and R&B. The Rascals enjoyed commercial success, releasing six gold albums and earning a devoted following. However, internal tensions and changing musical landscapes led to the band's breakup in the early 1970s. After The Rascals disbanded, Cavaliere embarked on a solo career, releasing several albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His solo work, including tracks like "Only a Lonely Heart Sees," reflected his evolving artistry, blending soulful ballads with pop-rock influences. Felix also collaborated with numerous artists, including Todd Rundgren and Steve Cropper, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile and respected musician. In 1997, Cavaliere and his fellow Rascals were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their place in music history. The band reunited in 2013 for a critically acclaimed multimedia concert series, Once Upon a Dream, produced by Steven Van Zandt. The reunion celebrated their groundbreaking legacy and brought their music to a new generation of fans. Beyond his achievements with The Rascals, Cavaliere remains an active performer and advocate for music education. He continues to tour, sharing his timeless songs with audiences worldwide. Cavaliere's influence on rock and soul endures, with his groundbreaking contributions inspiring countless artists and fans. Today Felix Cavaliere calls Nashville home base, where he is constantly collaborating and writing new material. He's also finishing his memoir and has an active tour schedule with Felix Cavaliere's Rascals. Anora is the story of Brooklyn, New York exotic dancer, Anora, who meets Ivan, the son of a Russian oligarch at the strip club. They impulsively marry, and once the news reaches Ivan's parents, their henchmen kidnap Ani in order to force her and Ivan to get the marriage annulled. Anora won the 2024 Palme d'Or at Cannes, and is a potential 2025 Oscar nominee. Cinematographer Drew Daniels first started working with director Sean Baker on the film Red Rocket. Drew was a fan of Baker's for years- he liked his sensibility and humanity, and his unconventional ethos behind his filmmaking approach. Drew attended the University of Texas film school, where filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater are alums. He appreciated the UT film program's independent, DIY approach. When Drew had the opportunity to work with Baker on Red Rocket, he said yes before he even read the script. “What's so refreshing about working with Sean is, you're flying by the seat of your pants, but you're also the leader of this passionate little rag tag army,” says Drew. Drew and Baker began talking about Anora during the editing of Red Rocket. Baker had a very specific idea of what he wanted, so they began testing and research scouts very early, driving to locations and discussing the movie before the script was fully written. Rather than an extensive shotlist, Drew and Baker scouted and blocked out scenes on the shoot locations. The film's striking imagery, from gritty urban landscapes to opulent mansions, was shot on Kodak 35mm film with Lomo anamorphic lenses. “Anora is different than a lot of Sean's films, because Sean's films often deal with people who are on the fringes, or people who are in a lower socioeconomic standing,” says Drew. “It takes on oligarch wealth and opulence, so it needed to be a bigger, more magical format- something that will fully embrace the scope of that mansion.” Choosing to film on 35 elevated the story of an exotic dancer like Ani into something beautiful and elegant, but Drew also wanted to reflect her attitude and scrappiness. He and Baker were influenced by 1970's New York films such as The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, to find the right amount of gritty imperfection. “Sean is a social realist filmmaker, but he wants his films to have a look and style,” says Drew. “He's very visual, and we constantly talk about the edit, the pacing, the energy, how it's going to cut.” Find Drew Daniels: Instagram @drewalandaniels Anora is currently in theaters, on VOD, and will be available to stream on Hulu. Author, historian, and professor Kevin M.
