Chapter 6 - The Journey From Platform Nine and Three-QuartersFF: Not who Hedwig is named after, but Saint Hedwig of Andechs (1174–1243), Duchess of Silesia, is the patron saint of orphans.Q1 - Is Hagrid an idiot for not showing Harry how to get on the platform? He passed a round-faced boy who was saying, “Gran, I've lost my toad again.”“Blimey,” said the other twin. “Aren't you —?” “He is,” said the first twin. “Aren't you?” he added to Harry.” “What?” said Harry. “Harry Potter,” chorused the twins. “Oh, him,” said Harry. “I mean, yes, I am.”They leant out of the window for her to kiss them goodbye and their younger sister began to cry. “Don't, Ginny, we'll send you loads of owls.” “We'll send you a Hogwarts toilet seat.” “George.” “Only joking, mum.”Q2 - What is your first impression of the Weasley family?Houses flashed past the window. Harry felt a great leap of excitement. He didn't know what he was going to — but it had to be better than what he was leaving behind.“Are all your family wizards?” asked Harry, who found Ron just as interesting as Ron found him. “Er — yes, I think so,” said Ron. “I think mums got a second cousin who's an accountant, but we never talk about him.”Q3 - What is your first impression of Ron?Q4 - What sweet sounds the best?Bertie Botts Every Flavor BeanDroobles Best Chewing GumChocolate FrogsPumpkin PastiesCauldron CakesLiquorice Wands“Go on, have a pasty,” said Harry, who had never had anything to share before or, indeed, anyone to share it with. It was a nice feeling, sitting there with Ron, eating their way through all Harry's pasties and cakes (the sandwiches lay forgotten).Q5 - Is 500 chocolate frog cards an alarming amount of chocolate frogs to eat? When they shook their heads, he wailed, “I've lost him! He keeps getting away from me!” “He'll turn up,” said Harry.Q6 - First impressions of Hermione Granger?“You'll soon find out some wizarding families are better than others, Potter. You don't want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there.” He held out his hand to shake Harry's, but Harry didn't take it. “I think I can tell who the wrong sort are for myself, thanks,” he said coolly.Q7 - What do you think of Scabbers the rat's bravery in biting Goyle's knuckle?Chapter 7 - The Sorting Hat“Welcome to Hogwarts,” said professor MGonagall“There's nothing hidden in your head the sorting hat can't see.”Q1 - If you had to create a way for students to be sorted into their houses without using the sorting hat, what would you do?Q2 - So what house are you?Q3 - Why do you think it took so long to sort Seamus Finnigan and Neville Longbottom?“You could be great, you know, it's all here in your head, and slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that — no? Well, if you're sure — better be Gryffindor!”Q4 - Why do you think Harry nearly got sorted into Slytherin?“Before we begin out banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!”“Is he — a bit mad?” he asked Percy uncertainly. “Mad?” said Percy airily. “He's a genius! Best wizard in the world! But he is a bit, yes. Potatoes, Harry?”Q5 - Do you know what mint humbugs are?Q6 - Where do you think these ghosts come from?It happened suddenly. The hook-nosed teacher looked past Quirrell's turban straight into Harry's eyes — and a sharp, hot pain shot across the car on Harry's forehead.Everybody finished the song at different times. At last, only the Weasley twins were left singing along to a very slow funeral march. Dumbledore conducted their last few lines with his wand, and when they had finished, he was one of those who clapped loudest. “Ah, music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here! And now, bedtime. Off you trot.”Q7 - Do you know what a poltergeist is?Chapter 8 - The Potions MasterQ1 - If you had a scar, where would you want it and what would you want it of?Q2 - Do you think Harry is going to get married? If so, do you think he'd marry any of the people who were introduced in the book so far?At the start-of-term Banquet, Harry had got the idea that Professor Snape disliked him. By the end of the first Potions lesson, he knew he'd been wrong. Snape didn't dislike Harry — he hated him.Q3 - Do you think there's any reason why Snape would hate Harry or is just one of those let-me-pick-a-student-to-be-mean-to-on-the-first-day kind of thing?Q4 - Is Fang a boar or a dog?Q5 - First impression of McGonagall and Snape?Chapter 9 - The Midnight DuelHarry had never believed he would meet a boy he hated more than Dudley, but that was before he met Draco Malfoy.Q1 - Would you like to have a remembrall?Q2 - So far in the Hogwarts experience, what event/class would you be most excited for and why?WHAM! — a thus and a nasty crack and Neville lay, face down, on the grass in a heap. His broomstick was still rising higher and higher and started to drift lazily toward the Forbidden Forest and out of sight.Q3 - Was it Nevilles issue for falling off his broom or was it his broomstick?Harry saw, as though in slow motion, the ball rise up in the air and then start to fall. He leant forward and pointed his broom handle down — next second he was gathering speed in a steep dive, racing the ball — wind whistled in his ears, mingles with the screams of people watching — he stretched out his hand — a foot from the ground he caught it, just in time to pull his broom straight, and he toppled gently on to the grass with the Remembrall clutched safely in his hand.Q4 - What did you initially think was going to happen to Harry after McGonagall caught him flying?“Wood?” Thought Harry, bewildered; was Wood a cane she was going to use on him?Q5 - Is it a bit too early to make Harry Seeker after one nice catch of a Remembrall?Q6 - Would you like to learn how to fly on a broom?“And what if I wave my wand and nothing happens?” “Throw it away and punch him on the nose,” Ron suggested.Q7 - What are your thoughts on Draco Malfoy?“What do they think they're doing, keeping a thing like that locked up in a school?” Ron said finally.Q8 - Is Hogwarts really safe…like really?Q9 - Does Steak and Kidney pie actually sound good?

Dudley Jerked awake. “Where's the cannon?” he said stupidly.Q1 - What was Dudley dreaming about?“Las' time I saw you, you was only a baby,” said the giant. “Yeh look a lot like yer dad, but yeh've got yer mum's eyes.”“Harry – yer a wizard.”Q2 - If you are starving in a hut and a massive giant breaks in and starts cooking up a meal, what would you hope that he made?Q3 - What are your first impressions of Hagrid? What's up with his assault of Dudley?Q4 - The logistics and maybe ethics of Hagrid throwing an owl out of the door in the middle of a raging storm is interesting. His mother picked it up for him…“But I know I'll be in Slytherin, all our family have been – imagine being in Hufflepuff, I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?”“Where are your parents?” “They're dead,” said Harry shortly.“Ah yes,” said the man. “Yes, yes. I thought I'd be seeing you soon. Harry Potter.”“It's really the wand that chooses the wizard, of course.”Q6 - If you could choose your wand, which wand core would you want and why?“I remember every want I've ever sold, Mr Potter. Every single wand. It so happens that the phoenix whose tail feather is in your wand, gave another feather – just one other. It is very curious indeed that you should be destined for this wand when its brother, why its brother gave you that scar.”Q7 - How do we like Hagrid?Chapter 6 - The Journey From Platform Nine and Three-QuartersFF: Not who Hedwig is named after, but Saint Hedwig of Andechs (1174–1243), Duchess of Silesia, is the patron saint of orphans.Q1 - Is Hagrid an idiot for not showing Harry how to get on the platform? ST. HEDWIG OF SILESIA l PATRON OF ANDECHS, ROMAN CATHOLIC OF WROCLAW AND DIOCESE OF GORLITZ Feast Day: October 16 Born in 1174 as Duchess of Bavaria, Germany, St. Hedwig, our saint today, was an illustrious child and grew up more distinguished for her virtues and holiness of life. At age 12, her parents gave her in marriage to Henry, Duke of Poland, whom she influenced to a life of holiness. She loved the Eucharist and the Scripture. During mealtime, she had the Scripture read aloud for the entire household. She prayed, fasted, ate simple food, and was simple in her clothes. She was a dedicated wife and mother, however, she also spent much of her time to serving the poor, the sick, and expectant mothers. She would bring some sick people in the castle and personally attended to them. She sent money to prisoners and to poor debtors who could not pay their debts. Her husband, Henry the Duke, meanwhile, met oppositions from his close relatives, who were enviously after the throne. At a certain encounter, the Duke was seized by his rival and narrowly escaped death. Only the pleadings of Hedwig led to his release. This event widened the reign of her husband, who afterwards was promoted as Duke of Greater Poland and the High Duke of Krakow, following a 1138 Testament of Seniority. After the birth of their sixth child, Hedwig persuaded her husband to make the vow of chastity. They made the vow in the presence of a Bishop. Henry and Hedwig faithfully lived this vow and they supported each other's projects for the poor. He donated a building for the Augustinians and also founded a Cistercian convent, and other monasteries and hospitals at Trebnitz. He died in 1238, and was buried at a Cistercian monastery of nuns, the one he had established in 1202 at Hedwig's request. After Henry's death, Hedwig continued to help the needy. She established hospitals for the sick and the lepers. She donated all her fortunes to the Church and lived a truly poor life. A story was told that she went barefoot in visiting some sick persons and it was reported to the Bishop. When the Bishop told her to use slippers, she brought a pair but carried them in her hands. Years later, she moved into a monastery, · of nuns. She assumed the religious habit of a lay sister, but she did not take the vows. She invited many German women and other settlers in Silesia to join them. Hedwig died on October 15, 1243, and was buried in Trzenica Abbey with her husband. A few of her relics are kept at Andechs Abbey and in St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin. Hedwig was canonized in 1267 by Pope Clement IV, a supporter of the Cistercian Order. She is patron saint of Silesia, and of Andechs, the Catholic Diocese of Wroclaw and Gorlitz. St. Hedwig was devoted to the Virgin Mary, and would bring her statue to bless the sick, some of whom were healed. She was buried with this statue and tradition says that when her tomb was opened years later, the fingers holding the statue were incorrupt. Lately, Bishop Andrzej Siemienieswski Jacek Kicinski, current auxiliary Bishop of Wroclaw, Poland, commented that St. Hedwig showed the world that Germans and Polish could live together harmoniously as members of one Church. “St. Hedwig, you gave up all the pleasures and comforts of this world, come quickly to help those who are suffering due to poverty and privations. Amen.” Do I sometimes leave my comfort zones so as to help others?

Graining In is fresh off the heels of its most successful Week One episode to date, with Scott Janish! The Matty and Noah revel in the success, try to find valuable lessons from the recent the podcast's growth in listenership; instead, their predictably petty takeaways are merely fixations on self esteem issues and disbelief in the fact that Scott, a man who has dedicated his brewing career to pushing the scientific understanding of IPAs, isn't in love with lagers. Thankfully, the latter point proves to be a good topic of discussion and the guys don't quite board the technical train, but at least take a ride on the Brewing Science & Psychology Shuttle Bus. Noah and Matt discuss how lagers grew to become the definitive "brewer's beer", the importance of place in beer enjoyment, each share their favorite lager, and Noah rambles phonetic on his philosophy with lager yeast selection, why he never homebrewed lagers, the importance of decoction and alternative mash schedules, talks temperature, and gushes about spunding valves. The response to a very technical conversation with Scott was nothing short of eye opening, so hopefully this will be the first of many episodes that live more in that practical arena, while still appealing to brewers, drinkers, and just people in general on a more consistent basis. The inspiration for this beer came from the archival collection of American brewer Walter Voigt, which is located within the National Museum of American History's Archives. Voigt, who studied brewing at the famous Siebel Institute Of Technology in Chicago, left behind a recipe for an American-style bock last brewed in the 1930s. Mike and Jeff resurrected this recipe and began to brew Bock to the Future in September.A New Take on the American BockThis Voigt-inspired beer is a craft American-style bock brewed with a combination of pale malt, crystal malt, black malt, and rice; an Andechs yeast from Jasper Yeast; and Nugget and Willamette hops. Mike expects this simple grist to create a complex taste to give drinkers a traditional American bock flavor.Check out More History of American Craft Beer Bock to the Future brings alive the deep and rich history of American craft beer. Harry Potter is a series of fantasy novels written by British author J. K. Rowling. The novels chronicle the lives of a young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Wikipedia I am a big fan of all the books and movies. Rowling said her favorite beast in the series is the Phoenix, a mythical sacred bird who ignites into flames when it reaches 500 or 1,000 years old only to emerge from the flames as a new and young phoenix.[4] Interesting Phoenix Fact The "Order of the Phoenix" is a secret organization led by Albus Dumbledore, who is dedicated to fighting Lord Voldemort and his followers, the Death Eaters Polyjuice Potion Jelly Shots Ginger Ale mixture 1/2 cup ginger ale 1 envelope plain gelatin 1/2 cup ginger (or pineapple) vodka Pineapple mixture 1/2 cup canned pineapple juice (fresh won't work - the enzymes in fresh pineapple interfere with the gelatin) 1 envelope plain gelatin 1/2 cup pineapple vodka Lime mixture 1/2 cup water 1 envelope plain gelatin 1/2 cup lime sherbet, melted Prepare the three gelatin mixes as follows: Ginger Ale: Pour the ginger ale in a medium saucepan. Sprinkle with the gelatin and allow to soak for a minute or two. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the gelatin is fully dissolved (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat. Stir in the vodka. Pineapple: Pour the pineapple juice in a medium saucepan. Sprinkle with the gelatin and allow to soak for a minute or two. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the gelatin is fully dissolved (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat. Stir in the vodka. Lime: Pour the water in a medium saucepan. Sprinkle with the gelatin and allow to soak for a minute or two. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the gelatin is fully dissolved (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat. Stir in the melted sherbet. Pour each mixture into a separate bowl and refrigerate until partially set. (Just starting to change from liquid to solid - about 20 to 25 minutes.) Prepare a standard 1lb loaf pan about 8" x 5", glass or non-reactive metal) by spraying with a little cooking spray and then wiping out with a paper towel. Give each mixture a quick stir. Drop alternating spoonfuls of the three mixtures into the pan, until all the gelatin has been transferred. Refrigerate until fully set (at least 6 hours or overnight - extra time is needed for the gelatins to bond) To serve, cut into rectangles. Makes about 18 jelly shots. Harry Potter's pet snowy owl, Hedwig, shares her name with two famous saints. One is Saint Hedwig of Andechs (1174-1243), a former duchess noted for her benevolence and compassionate nature. The other is Saint Hedwig, Queen of Poland (1373-1399). The death of Hedwig in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows represents Harry's loss of innocence and coming of age. Interesting Hedwig Fact Seven different owls played Hedwig; their names are Gizmo, Kasper, Oops, Swoops, Oh Oh, Elmo and Bandit Traditional British Treacle Tart with brown butter, rosemary, and lemon. Author: Sarah Coates Ingredients For the tart base: 1 cup (150g) plain flour ¾ stick (75g) butter pinch of salt 2-3 tbsp cold water For the filling: ¼ stick (25g) butter zest and juice of half a lemon ⅔ cup + 1tbsp (340g) Lyle's Golden Syrup 1 tsp finely chopped rosemary 1 + ¼ cups fresh breadcrumbs (wholemeal or white)(there is no weight measure here because the weight of different pieces of bread will vary. The volume is key) ⅔ cup (70g) almond meal 1 egg Instructions Preheat the oven to 375F/180C and grease a shallow 9½ inch/23 cm cake tin, tart tin or pie dish. To make the base, work the butter into the flour using either your fingers, a food processor or a stand mixer. Once the butter and flour look like sandy crumbs, gradually add just enough ice water to bring the mixture together into a soft dough. Tune in to this week's Beer Sessions Radio as host Jimmy Carbone and winter co-host Anne Becerra welcome Joe and Chris DeCicco of DeCicco Family Markets as well as Lars Dahlhaus, Eastern Sales Manager at Fentiman’s Inc, plus special guests from NYC's Fraunces Tavern. Anne Becerra is still shocked that she's been able to turn her love for craft beer into a career. She was the first female Certified Cicerone in New York City and has been at the helm of some of the best craft beer bars in Manhattan for the last seven years, most recently at The Blind Tiger, The Ginger Man and as Beer Director for Taproom 307. Anne is a beer writer for Serious Eats and Martha Stewart Living, and has been featured multiple times on NBC, Fox and Friends and CNN as well as contributed to TIME Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Wall Street Journal, Sirius XM, USA Today and more. She was the only speaker at both Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans and the Women’s Chef and Restaurateur Conference in NYC to represent the beer industry, and believes the best part about craft beer is sharing it. You can catch her teaching classes, judging beer competitions, hosting beer dinners and weekly tasting events, and curating beer pairings throughout the tri-state area. The three young scions of the family that founded the Westchester/Rockland DeCicco Markets dynasty—Joe and his cousins, brothers Chris and John—all share a passion for beer. The trio used the unglamorous fact that they were born into a supermarket family to launch themselves as heavy players in the local beer world. Look for the 10 DeCicco stores in Westchester and Rockland to carry between 400 and 1000+ beers each. Meanwhile, several of the DeCicco stores (Pelham, Harrison, Ardsley, Armonk, Cornwall, and Brewster) offer taps for growler fills. And two of the DeCicco Markets (Armonk and Brewster) actually offer craft-beer bars on the premises, which means that you can catch a buzz before doing your weekly shopping. The Armonk DeCicco is located next to Fortina and offers 28 taps for growler refills or for just hanging around drinking. Look for the DeCicco boys to collaborate with several local brewers including Sixpoint Brewery, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, and Evil Twin Brewing. Also, look for DeCicco’s sponsorship at many local beer events, including Savor New York. Lars has a new company called "Liquid Projects" which incorporated in April of 2015. As the president of Schwelmer Beer Imports N.A., Lars has been importing the Craft Beers from his hometown as well as other Bavarian beers such as Lammsbrau, Miltenberger, Meckatzer and Eichbaum to name a few since 2003. From 2011 to 2014 Lars has been the Craft Beer Portfolio Manager at St. Killian, responsible for such renowned brands as Wuerzburger and again Lammsbrau. During his time there he launched and established Crabbie’s from the UK, 961 from Lebanon, Andechs and Rothaus from Germany. The burning desire to offer an innovative and cost-effective way to international producers is what started Liquid Projects. Lars has been a resident of Williamsburg, Brooklyn for 18 years.

Seasonal timing in different environments: comparative studies in Stonechats. Stonechats from four populations (Kenya, Sibiria, Ireland, Austria) were compared during their first year of life at the Max-Planck Research Centre for Ornithology in Andechs, Germany. They differed in temporal patterns of their seasonal behavior and in their reaction norms to important Zeitgebers (e.g., photoperiod). These differences were taylored to their native habitats, and there is evidence that they can rapidly be modified via micro-evolution. Implications for adjustment to changing seasonal conditions (climate change) are discussed.

Airborne hyperspectral remote sensing enables not only spatial monitoring of vegetation cover, but also the derivation of individual plant constituents such as chlorophyll and nitrogen content. These are important parameters for optimised agricultural management on a field basis through the possibility of spatially differentiated fertilisation and for hydrological and vegetation yield modelling. The use of existing airborne imaging spectrometers is cost-intensive. Moreover, it is difficult to obtain these sensors for multitemporal applications. The imaging spectrometer AVIS (Airborne Visible/Near Infrared Imaging Spectrometer) was built at the Chair of Geography and Geographical Remote Sensing of the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, Germany, to overcome these difficulties. AVIS is designed as a cost-effective tool for environmental monitoring using commonly available components. AVIS enables the deployment of a hyperspectral sensor for both scientific research and educational purposes. It is based on a direct sight spectrograph coupled to a standard B/W CCD camera. The signal received by the CCD is read out and sent via a frame grabber card to a personal computer, where the data is stored on the hard disc together with additional GPS data. The radiometric, spectral and geometric properties of AVIS resulting from the calibration procedure are summarised in Table 7-1. Table 7-1: AVIS characteristics Parameter Description Spectral range 553-999nm Spectral resolution 6nm Spectral sampling rate / resampling 2nm / 6nm Number of used bands 74 SNR 45dB (year 1999), 47dB (year 2000) Spatial resolution 300 pixels per image line Spatial sampling rate 390 pixels per image line FOV 1.19rad IFOV across track 3.1mrad IFOV along track 2.98mrad One aim of this thesis was to test the potential of AVIS for the purpose of environmental monitoring, especially of the chlorophyll and nitrogen status of plants. The land cover types under investigation were grassland, maize ( Zea mays L.) and winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.). Within this scope, a total of 21 AVIS flights were carried out during the vegetation periods of the years 1999 and 2000. The AVIS data were preprocessed before analysis, including dark current and flat field correction, resampling as well as atmospheric correction and reflectance calibration. The test area chosen for the validation of the AVIS data is located in the northern Bavarian foothills, 25km southwest of Munich, Germany (48° 6’ N, 11° 17’ E). It is situated between the Ammersee in the west and the Starnberger See in the east. The municipalities Gilching and Andechs define the northern and southern borders respectively. Within this area, three water protection areas were chosen as test sites. In these test sites, most of the farmers are under contract to the local agricultural office “ Amt für Landwirtschaft” resulting in detailed management data for each field. This data include useful information for the interpretation of ground and AVIS data. Two weather stations of the Bavarian network of agro-meteorological stations, namely No.72 (Gut Hüll) and No.80 (Rothenfeld), are located in the test area and provide information about precipitation, temperature and radiation. Ten and thirteen stands were selected as test fields in 1999 and 2000 respectively, including three fields each of maize and wheat in 1999 as well as three fields of maize and six fields of wheat in 2000. During both years, four meadows were investigated belonging to the same plant community ( Arrhenatherion elatioris). The meadows differ in the utilisation intensity (non-fertilised meadow with one cut, meadow with one cut, meadow with rotational grazing and meadow with four to five cuts). The ground truth campaigns included weekly measurements of plant parameters, such as height, dry and wet biomass, phenological stage, chlorophyll and nitrogen content, as well as a photographic documentation for each field. The chlorophyll and nitrogen measurements, which were derived from the sampling on ground, are available in contents per area [g/m²] and in contents per mass ([mg/g] for chlorophyll and [%DM] for nitrogen). The former can be used to evaluate the photosynthetic capacity or productivity of a canopy, which is an important input parameter for hydrological or vegetation models; the latter may be an indicator for plant physiological status or level of stress, which is a valuable source of information for optimising field management. The relationship between chlorophyll and nitrogen based on the ground measurements showed that a differentiation of the land cover types is necessary for significant correlation. When the plant species are investigated separately, the chlorophyll and nitrogen content per area are always highly correlated, especially for chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll content (r²≥0.8). For all investigated land cover types, the nitrogen and chlorophyll contents per mass are uncorrelated. For wheat, the results improve when the phenological state and the cultivar are considered (r²>0.67). For maize, distinct variations in the chlorophyll content per mass during the vegetation period reduced correlation with these parameters. The use of a fitted chlorophyll trend curve instead of the original measurements does not lead to a significant improvement of the results. For grassland, no significant correlation above r²=0.67 could be observed except for chlorophyll and nitrogen, both per area, where a decreasing strength of correlation could be monitored with increasing fertilisation level. These results lead to the conclusion that the chlorophyll and nitrogen contents per mass of the investigated land covers are decoupled when the compensation point for effective photosynthesis is exceeded. Beyond this limit the nitrogen in the plants is no longer incorporated into chlorophylls, but mainly into proteins, alkaloids and nucleic acids, whereas the proteins especially are used for internal storage of nitrogen. The derivation of the chlorophyll and nitrogen content of the plant leaves on a mean field basis was conducted using three hyperspectral spectral approaches, namely the hyperspectral NDVI (hNDVI), the Optimised Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index OSAVI as well as the relatively unknown Chlorophyll Absorption Integral CAI. The multispectral NDVITM was simulated as established reference. The results of the derivation of both chlorophyll and nitrogen content of plants with the investigated approaches depend strongly on a priori knowledge about the canopies monitored. In general, the use of contents per area rather than contents per mass has been found more suitable for the investigated remote sensing applications. A significant correlation between any index and the chlorophyll or nitrogen content for the whole sample size could not be derived. The optimal spectral approach for derivation is species-dependent, but also dependent on the cultivar. The chlorophyll and nitrogen level of the plants under observation as well as their temperature sensitivity mainly caused this dependence. The NDVITM, hNDVI and OSAVI became insensitive for high chlorophyll content above about 1g/m² (1.5mg/g) chlorophyll a and 0.2g/m² (0.4mg/g) chlorophyll b, respectively. A saturation of the indices was also found for nitrogen content above 2.5g/m². The saturation limit of nitrogen in percentage of dry matter could be rated at about 4%. The positive correlation between the indices and this parameter for wheat leads to insensitivity at values above this limit, while the negative correlation for maize results in saturation for values below 2.5%. The CAI is not affected by saturation as much as the other spectral approaches, leading to higher coefficients of determination, especially for contents per area. The CAI becomes insensitive at chlorophyll contents per area above 2g/m². The results lead to the assumption, that the flattening and narrowing of the chlorophyll absorption feature at 680nm most probably causes the saturation of the NDVITM, hNDVI and OSAVI. The ratios are directly affected by an increase in reflectance in the red wavelength region. The high correlations between the CAI and contents per area can be ascribed to the fact that the CAI is based on an integrated measurement over an area and therefore is less affected by an increase of reflectance in the red wavelengths. The CAI probably becomes insensitive at the point where the narrowing of the absorption feature leads to a shift of the red edge position towards the blue wavelength region. This saturation limit lies at approximately 2g chlorophyll per m². In contrast, the chlorophyll content per mass, which indicates the plant’s physiological status or level of stress, could be estimated more accurately using spectral indices such as hNDVI and OSAVI, especially for wheat. The low correlations derived for maize are caused by its higher temperature dependence, leading to daily variations in the chlorophyll content per mass. The chlorophyll and nitrogen contents of the grassland canopies could not be derived with the spectral approaches investigated. When the meadows were investigated separately, correlations could only be found between the CAI and the chlorophyll content per area for the most intensely utilised meadow (four to five cuts), which on the one side is characterised by the highest level of fertilisation, but on the other side is affected by the highest nutrient offtake. The low potential of the investigated indices can be mainly assigned to the fact that the chlorophyll and nitrogen values of the meadows mostly exceeded the saturation limits of the applied indices. The possibility of deriving chlorophyll and nitrogen accurately enough to map within field heterogeneities was discussed on the basis of a wheat field, which was analysed separately at three sampling points for chlorophyll and nitrogen content. The approaches found to be most suitable for the parameter estimation of wheat were applied. The CAI was used for the estimation of the chlorophyll content per area and mass as well as for the nitrogen content per area. The hNDVI was applied to estimate the canopy’s nitrogen content per mass. Both approaches were able to reproduce the chlorophyll contents of the different sampling points accurately enough to derive the differences between the measurement points when the saturation limits were not exceeded. Beyond these limits the index values decreased with increasing measurement values. The spatial pattern of the nutrient supply was discussed by comparing nitrogen pattern images, which were derived from CAI measurements acquired in 2000 with the yield measurement map of the same field. The phenological stage of stem elongation (EC 30) turned out to be most suitable for the derivation of the nitrogen pattern. On the one hand, the crop condition at these stages determine yield and on the other hand the nitrogen pattern images were able to map the inner field patterns of nitrogen supply. After anthesis the nitrogen images can map areas with different degrees of maturity. Therefore they can be used for the monitoring of maturity stages for the determination of the most favourable harvest date. As described here, AVIS is still in its early stages. It has the potential to become a costeffectiveAVIS2, which covers the spectral range of 400-900nm, has been in commercial use since 2001. tool for the monitoring of the environment.
