Programs advocate for long-term-care residents When Janice Munson walks through the entrance of a local nursing home, she has a list of names of the aged and disabled residents who have called for help. After those visits, she'll check in with other residents, sometimes asking if they have a physical therapy plan and if they are being taken for supervised walks to maintain their mobility. The answer is often no. "They'll say, 'I know there aren't enough staff, so I don't want to ask.' " Ensuring that residents obtain services is one of Munson's primary roles as a long-term care ombudsman, a position created by the Older Americans Act of 1965. The legislation requires states to provide independent advocates for residents in nursing homes, adult care homes and assisted living and rehabilitation facilities. Munson is among the eight volunteers who, along with five paid staff members, monitor 120 facilities in Region 4, which covers Putnam, Westchester and Rockland counties. Based in Cold Spring and led by Philipstown resident Judy Farrell, the region is one of 15 in the state. Region 5, based in Fishkill, covers Dutchess and five other counties. Nursing homes are the priority; the state wants them visited weekly and other facilities at least quarterly, said Farrell, who is also a member of the Philipstown Town Board. Although physical abuse draws headlines, complaints range from a staff member giving a resident the wrong medication or failing to follow therapy plans to dirty rooms, substandard food and a lack of recreation. Along with residents, the friends of residents and facility staff can report concerns, said Farrell. During the pandemic, when quarantines prevented families from visiting long-term care facilities, Farrell arranged for "compassionate care" visits. In one case, she helped a man unable to get his dying mother discharged to home hospice care. When she arrived home, he called Farrell, crying and grateful. "You can't replace that feeling," she said. "It's greatly satisfying." Arnold Tanner knows the feeling. A volunteer in Region 4, he visits a facility near his home in Sleepy Hollow twice a week. Carrying an iPad filled with notes, he meets first with people in the long-term-care units before introducing himself to newcomers and checking in at the rehab unit. He sometimes gets "a little better feel for the place" from newcomers and rehab patients, who are less reluctant to speak up, he said. Those in long-term care may fear retribution by staff, which is also a source of complaints. Statewide, the ombudsman program received 18,346 complaints during fiscal 2024, including 1,680 to the Cold Spring office. About a third were care-related, a broad category that includes accidents, falls, general requests for assistance and concerns about medications and physical therapy. Another 15 percent were complaints about staff failing to "honor and promote a resident's right or preferences" about healthcare, privacy, visitors and other areas. Many complaints related to food and admissions, including discharges and evictions. "Sometimes people face discharge for nonpayment when they might be eligible for Medicaid," Farrell explained. Complaints occasionally lead to legal action. In 2024, the state attorney general announced a $45 million settlement with Centers for Care, which owns four facilities, including one in White Plains, for "years of tragic and devastating mistreatment and neglect." According to the attorney general, "call bells regularly went unanswered, residents were forced to sit in their own urine and feces for hours, meals were not provided in a timely manner and personal belongings, including hearing aids, dentures and clothing, were often lost or stolen." After making On the Shoulders of Giants, a film about the orthopedics department at NYU Langone that was a Tribeca Film Festival Special Jury Award finalist in 2024, Cold Spring resident Peter Sanders turned to ombudsman programs. In March 2025, he began ...

The February episode of "Crossroads of Rockland History" started streaming on Monday, February 16, at 10 am.On this episode of Crossroads of Rockland History, host Clare Sheridan welcomed author Eve Kahn as she returns to discuss her latest work ahead of her March presentation at Sloatsburg's Harmony Hall. The focus will be on Kahn's new book, Queen of Bohemia Predicts Own Death: Gilded-Age Journalist Zoe Anderson Norris (Fordham University Press). If you're unfamiliar with Zoe Anderson Norris (1860–1914), a notable journalist of the Gilded Age, you're not alone: Eve Kahn is on a mission to bring her story to light. Norris was known for blending fact and fiction in her writings, often weaving autobiographical elements into her stories, which led to criticism for using her personal relationships as material. Despite this, she was deeply committed to exposing the struggles of New York's poor through East Side, the magazine she launched and ran from 1909 to 1914. Remarkably, its final issue included Norris's own prediction of her death, inspiring the dramatic title of Kahn's book.Eve Kahn's presentation at Harmony Hall will take place on Sunday, March 8, at 2 pm. Tickets are $20 and benefit the restoration of the historic Jacob Sloat House.Information and tickets are online here: https://www.friendsofharmonyhall.org/events-2/queen-of-bohemia-predicts-own-death-eve-kahn-returns__________________Crossroads of Rockland History, a program of the Historical Society of Rockland County, starts streaming new episodes on the third Monday of each month at 10am. Plus, campaign finances and updates in other races One of the seven declared candidates to challenge Rep. Mike Lawler has ended his campaign. John Sullivan, a former FBI official who lives in Rockland County, said on Instagram on Jan. 30 that he is no longer in the race for the Democratic nomination to oppose Lawler, the Republican incumbent who represents District 17, which includes Philipstown. Those still seeking the Democratic nomination are John Cappello, a Rockland native and former defense attaché at the U.S. embassies in Israel and Serbia; Peter Chatzky, a tech company founder and village trustee in Briarcliff Manor; Cait Conley, a West Point graduate from Orange County and former director of counterterrorism for the National Security Council; Beth Davidson, a Rockland County legislator; Effie Phillips-Staley, a Tarrytown trustee who is a nonprofit executive; and Mike Sacks, a lawyer and former TV journalist from Westchester. Jessica Reinmann, who founded the nonprofit 914Cares in Westchester County, dropped out in November. Rep. Pat Ryan, whose district includes Beacon, has endorsed Conley. Among the candidates, Chatzky reported having $5.5 million in campaign funds as of Dec. 31, although he has loaned his committee $5.75 million. Conley had $1.2 million and Davidson $738,000. The other three candidates reported having less than $30,000 each on hand. To appear on the June 23 primary ballot, candidates must submit at least 1,250 signatures of registered voters in the district on a nominating petition by April 6. House District 18 Ryan, a Democrat, has one challenger so far. Sharanjit Thind registered with the Federal Elections Commission last fall to run as a Republican for the District 18 seat. In his most recent campaign finance filing, through Dec. 31, he said he had not raised or spent more than $5,000. Ryan reported having $2.5 million. According to his LinkedIn profile, Thind is the founder and CEO of NuWay Media Group, a Manhattan-based marketing firm, and was a Nassau County human rights commissioner from 2012 to 2018. He grew up in a Sikh family in Kapurthala, Punjab, India, and holds an MBA and a postgraduate diploma in journalism. Putnam County Kevin Byrne, a former state legislator, is completing his first, 4-year term as county executive after running unopposed in 2022. On Jan. 22, Brett Yarris, a Democrat who ran unsuccessfully in November for a seat on the county Legislature, filed with the state Board of Elections to challenge Byrne. In a statement, Yarris said that his filing is "simply an exploratory committee and an official decision has not yet been made" about whether he will run. Yarris campaigned last year to represent District 5, which includes the hamlet of Carmel and part of Lake Carmel, but lost to Jake D'Angelo, who won 53 percent of the vote. D'Angelo had earlier defeated incumbent Greg Ellner in the Republican primary with 63 percent of the vote. According to his campaign website for the Legislature seat, Yarris is the founder and CEO of The Behavior Movement, a special-needs fitness company, and Football Behavior, an analytics platform. He also serves as vice chair and treasurer of the Putnam County Soil & Water Conservation District board. Byrne has about $119,000 on hand, according to a campaign finance report filed with the state. State Senate Two Democrats, Lisa Kaul and Evan Menist, have filed to challenge Republican incumbent Rob Rolison, who is seeking a third term in the 39th District, which includes Beacon and Philipstown. If necessary, a primary vote would be held on June 23. Ryan has endorsed Kaul. The challengers each had about $22,000 in campaign funds as of Dec. 31, and Rolison reported $15,000. State Assembly No one has filed with the Board of Elections to challenge Dana Levenberg, whose district includes Philipstown, or Jonathan Jacobson, whose district includes Beacon. Both are Democrats.

Saigon sits down with Ian Bick to tell the full story of his upbringing, how getting pulled into the streets and gangs led him down a path that ultimately landed him in New York State Prison, and the crime that changed his life forever. Saigon opens up about what surviving prison really took, how incarceration reshaped his mindset, and why he refused to glorify crime after his release. He breaks down how music became his way out, eventually signing with Atlantic Records, and working with Mark Wahlberg on Entourage. 1911 Gold Corporation Chairman Gary O'Connor joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce the start of a 2,200-metre diamond drilling program at the Ogama-Rockland gold deposit, located southeast of the company's True North Gold Project. The program has already commenced, with one surface diamond drill rig mobilized to site. The drilling campaign is designed to support both resource expansion and confirmation, as the company continues to advance its understanding of the Ogama-Rockland deposit and its potential integration with existing infrastructure at True North. The Ogama-Rockland gold deposit currently hosts an NI 43-101 compliant inferred mineral resource of approximately 1.28 million tonnes grading 8.17 grams per tonne gold, containing an estimated 337,000 ounces of gold. O'Connor emphasized that the deposit's high-grade nature and shallow mineralization make it an attractive near-term development opportunity. According to O'Connor, the planned eight drill holes will focus on confirming the updated geological model and testing extensions of high-grade, quartz-vein-hosted gold mineralization at relatively shallow depths. Drilling will target both down-dip and along-strike extensions of the main vein system, as well as newly identified parallel structures that emerged from recent relogging and resampling of historical drill core and updated geological modelling. In addition to expanding the resource base, the company plans to conduct metallurgical test work on drill core samples collected during the program. This testing will evaluate the suitability of processing material from Ogama-Rockland at the existing True North processing facility, potentially providing a streamlined development pathway and capital efficiencies. Following completion of the drill program and analysis of the results, 1911 Gold plans to deliver an updated underground mineral resource estimate in the first half of 2026. The company views this program as an important step in unlocking additional value at Ogama-Rockland while leveraging its established infrastructure at the broader True North project. #proactiveinvestors #1911goldcorporation #1911gold #tsxv #aumb #otcqx #aumbf #GoldExploration #MiningNews #TrueNorthGold #OgamaRockland #DrillingUpdate #PEA #ResourceUpdate #GoldMiningCanada #TSXV #JuniorMining

Episode began streaming on October 20, 2025 at 10am2025 marks 50 years since the HSRC's history center museum's cornerstone was laid, following years of work led by John Zehner. Zehner, president of the HSRC from 1954-1978, is widely recognized as the driving force behind the historical society's success in the mid 20th century. On this episode, Russell Woolley, a lifelong Rocklander shared memories of working with Zehner in the early 1970s in the historic Anglo-Dutch Blauvelt Barn. Russell Woolley is President and Broker Owner of Wright Bros. Real Estate. He has resided in Rockland County throughout his life and is presently based in Upper Nyack. He has worked with clients over an extended period and has participated in community activities through service and philanthropy. John Zehner was a civil engineer by profession. He played a pivotal role in the establishment and leadership of the Historical Society of Rockland County. His contributions significantly expanded the society's membership and led to the establishment of a permanent museum building, thereby preserving local history for future generations.Mr. Zehner became affiliated with the historical society in the 1960s when he was appointed as the librarian responsible for managing its book collection. Mr. Zehner had a deep knowledge and enduring interest in local and American history, which led him to the most important and long-standing volunteer commitment of his life.Under Mr. Under Zehner's leadership, the society purchased the Jacob Blauvelt Homestead in 1970 as a permanent headquarters. Then, he led the society in planning and building a fireproof museum in 1977. During his presidency from 1954 to 1978, the society's membership grew to over 1850, making it one of the most successful in the tri-state rural area.Mr. Zehner authored texts on local history, including a 1995 book on Benedict Arnold's attempted betrayal, and supported numerous publications and historical markers. Even after retiring as president, he remained active as a trustee and committee member, continuing to contribute ideas and support until shortly before his death in 1996.www.RocklahdHistory.orgCrossroads of Rockland History, a program of the Historical Society of Rockland County, starts streaming new episodes on the third Monday of each month at 10am. The first round of the Agricultural Roads Improvement Program grants is open! This application period will distribute $50 million in ARIP funding to support projects across the state focused on improving rural roads and culverts that are critical to moving and transporting agricultural and forestry products. The 2025-27 Biennial Budget included $150 million to continue this program created in 2023. This year, $30 million will be specifically targeted to bridge and culvert repair through the separate Local Bridge and Culvert Improvement Program. WisDOT is developing those program materials, which are expected to be available in the coming months, says Assistant Deputy Secretary Joel Nilsestuen. He tells Stephanie Hoff that the two completed projects of the 91 grants from the 2024-25 ARIP program are: Town of Sugar Camp in Oneida County and Town of Rockland in Brown County. Not a lot of rain out of yesterdays' cloudy skies according to Stu Muck. The threat of frost gets real for most of the state beginning tonight. He also notes that we'll be enjoying plenty of sunshine and a little warmer temperatures for the rest of the week. With 120 auctions to go before the end of the calendar year, Ashley Huhn with the Steffes Group is staying busy. He says that the fourth quarter has turned into one of their most active times of the year. Why? Farms decide they want to replace or upgrade certain pieces of equipment as the harvest concludes or right after. Paid for by Steffes Group.Boneheaded maneuver! That's the phrase that WI Senator Pat Testin uses to describe the proposed fee escalation WDATCP wants to levy against all livestock marketing locations, associated support businesses like livestock truckers, and farmers themselves. Testin tells Pam Jahnke that after a Supreme Court ruling, the state legislature is powerless to override this agency directive. He implores anyone in the livestock industry to voice their concerns before October 15th. People in the farming community often struggle with discussing mental health. It's important to get beyond that stigma according to Paula Hillmann, Counseling Psychologist with the Wisconsin Farm Center. Housed within the WI Department of Ag., Trade and Consumer Protection, Hillmann says she reminds farmers that if trauma isn't treated it turns into PTSD. She tells Kiley Allan it's important for farmers and their families to remember that people care about them and that there is help available. She emphasizes that you're not alone if you're struggling. Paid for by Rural Mutual Insurance. The government shutdown is disrupting some reports that traders normally expect. The weekly crop progress report for example. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend, tells Pam Jahnke that there are private tools available to supplement the data, but upcoming reports - or lack of - could change the atmosphere of trading.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The first round of the Agricultural Roads Improvement Program grants opens for application on Oct. 6. Located at the opposite ends of the country, the states of Louisiana and Maine appear to share little in common at first glance. But take a closer look, and you'll see two places that share a passion for their distinct seafood culture – each home to a galaxy of culinary rockstars who elevate their local cuisine. On this week's show, Louisiana Eats takes you with us as we travel to Maine to explore the food scene in the Pine Tree State. We begin with Lady Oyster Tours and Tastings in Phippsburg, on the Casco Bay Peninsula. Owner and operator Virginia Shaffer is Maine's first "oyster sommelier," or certified oyster expert under the Oyster Master Guild. Throughout the year, Virginia and her company educate tourists on the local oyster industry, offering tastings and boat tours of oyster farming operations. She tells us about Maine's rapidly growing oyster industry, before Captain Joe Jerome steers us to get a first-hand look at an oyster farm. Then, we travel up the coast to meet Melissa Kelly, the first two-time recipient of the James Beard award for Best Chef Northeast. Melissa tells us about her Rockland farm-to-table restaurant, Primo and her remarkable life in food. We also meet farm manager Abigail Gallagher, who gives us a tour of the multi-acre farm surrounding the restaurant. Next, we visit the small town of Bath to dine in a restaurant overlooking the Kennebec River called OystHERS Raw Bar and Bubby. The seasonal raw bar is owned by sisters Sadia and Lauren Crosby, both lobstermen's daughters from nearby Georgetown Island. Sadia owns a sea farm, where the house oysters are produced. Lauren tells us the story behind OystHERS, which serves up fresh bivalves from local female-owned and family-owned farms. And who should we run into there, but Susan Spicer! The New Orleans chef tells us what she's cooking while cruising up the Atlantic coast. We end our trip at Browne Trading Market, a magical food and drink emporium in Portland. Since 1991, Browne Trading Company has been the supplier of seafood, caviar, and other delicacies to an exclusive restaurant chef customer base. Among our discoveries there were percebes – also known as gooseneck or turtle-claw barnacles – harvested on the Iberian Peninsula and exclusively available from Browne Trading. Specialty foods manager Michael Rigo explains why the job of harvesting these edible crustaceans is not for the faint of heart. Is it permissible according to Halacha to establish communal guidelines or enactments that restrict the sale or purchase of homes within a defined radius of the community? May a Jew purchase property in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood with the intent to rent it out to non-Jews? Does it matter what type of tenants are placed in the property—for example, individuals of questionable character, multiple families, or undocumented immigrants? If such tenants are likely to negatively impact the spiritual atmosphere of the neighborhood, is that a legitimate halachic concern that should be weighed?
