Better Read than Dead: Literature from a Left Perspective

You've been asking for it (and by “you” we mean “nobody”), so here's Naked Lunch (1959)! It's almost unfair to accuse Burroughs of having written this “high,” because there's really no version of a Burroughs novel that isn't about being absurdly high and abject. This nightmare account of heroin, orifices, evil doctors, and grime gets us talking about noveliness and what isn't a novel, the humor of the grotesque, and the question of literary nihilism. We consider if Allen Ginsberg was to Burroughs as Hawthorne was to Melville: helping him keep his sh*t together in order to write a non-insane novel and if he just gave up on this one. We also talk about Olympia Press, which published this along with The Ginger Man and Lolita, and why filthy-minded publishers are necessary. We read the Grove Press 2013 restored edition. We recommend Jennie Skerl's writings on Burroughs, particularly the collection William S. Burroughs at the Front: Critical Reception, 1959-1989. We also recommend Burroughs's letter collections, published in two volumes by Ecco Press. Check out some of the weird side-projects he did, including collaborations with Kurt Cobain and Laurie Anderson. Falling Rock Tap House in Denver is closing its doors and going out of business. Chris Black, owner of Falling Rock Tap House in Denver is our first guest today on Brew Ha Ha, today with Herlinda Heras, with Harry Duke sitting in for Steve Jaxon. Sadly for the beer world Chris Black is on a farewell tour. Falling Rock Tap House has been the most popular tap house in the country for many years. Now he has a set of several four-foot-by-six-foot signs that depict the logos of beers they sold. A former bartender who worked for him painted them. Now, he is visiting the breweries to give them their signs. He just visited Lost Abbey in San Diego and now he is up in Northern Caifornia to deliver some others at Anchor, Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada and Deschutes. Jeremy Cohen is on the phone from Schmaltz Brewing. Jeremy Cohen is wrapping up 25 years of brewing. He started at age 26 in 1996 in San Francisco. He grew the brand and sold beer all over the country. Now instead of trying to sell a regional brand, he is focussing on a new brand to serve just the New York City area with an exclusive wholesaler. He also has a new taproom in Troy, upstate New York. He is also doing consulting in the beer industry. He says he never thought it would get a far as it did. Brew Ha Ha "Brews News with Herlinda" is sponsored by Russian River Brewing Co. and by The Beverage People / Fermenter's Warehouse.   Herlinda describes how Falling Rock was located near the Colorado Rockies stadium. During the World Beer Cup in Denver, Falling Rock was the place to go. He still has a beer truck with 22 taps that can go to events. Bob Brewer is the legendary sales guy for Lagunitas. He met Chris Black a long time before Falling Rock. They met in Houston when Chris was a rep for a German brewery and Bob worked for Lagunitas. There was a tap house in Houston called The Ginger Man. Later he found that Chris had a taproom. Bob Brewer's role at Lagunitas included troubleshooting taps, sales and marketing. He always had a table at Beerfest and would go to Falling Rock in the off hours. Once there was an All-Star game at Coors Field and the rep from a large American brand put their signature product in every single bar, except for Falling Rock. They festooned the town with their logo, but only gave a case of beer to Chris, who proceeded to smash it with a large hammer, and then turned it into a sign outside the store saying something like “no crap on tap.”

Ross Bentley returns to the podcast to review the 2021 One Lap of America event that finished last week.  This was Ross’s first One Lap and he seemed to have a blast.  I think the hook has been set and Ross’s inherent competitiveness will likely lead to him trying to win it in the future.  We go into the event as a whole, its history, how the 2021 event went, and  every detail we could think of to scout for Bill’s eventual entry in a coming year.  It sounded like a great time and should probably be on almost every high performance driver’s bucket list.  Now which car should we enter, hmmmm. On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, Ben clarifies what people mean when they say the term “pedal fest”.  Bill first heard this related to drag racing.  Vicki had heard it but not a clue as to what it meant.  We also go into what the goal should be on track, the usual causes of the “fest” and ways to think about re-applying the throttle to minimize the issue.  Ben also demonstrates the sound that your car may have if this happens to you, lol. You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc.  Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. For instance, leaving an Apple Podcast rating is very easy.  If you go to your podcast library, under shows and click on the podcast you can leave a (5?) star rating and enter your review.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/RossBentleysOneLap We hope you enjoy this episode! PS  Please don’t forget that if you are looking to add an Apex Pro to your driving telemetry system, don’t forget to use our discount code for all Apex Pro systems you will receive a free Windshield Suction Cup Mount for the system, a savings of $40.  Just enter the code “ghitlikesapex!” when you order.  We have two systems for our team and Bill is looking to add a third for this season, pending CFO approval from Vicki.  They are a great system and truly invaluable in safely increasing your speed on track and/or autocross etc. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1)  We start with a display of a bit of podcast time travel involving Ross’s appearances on our podcast. 2)  Ross summarizes how the original “Cannonball Run” event transformed into the current One Lap of America” event and how it is structured. 3)  The event consisted of a scheduled ~20 events at various tack facilities across the country that change from year to year.  This year the total travel distance was almost 4,000 miles in the week, not counting any of driving within the events. 4)  Tracks consisted of:  Tire Racks’ Skid Pad, Grissom AFB for an autocross, Memphis International Raceway, Eagles Canyon, NOLA, Atlanta Motorsport Park, the Lanier Oval, Summit Point, and Gingerman. 5)  What to pack, what to bring, how to prep, car and tire selection, etc.  Yep, it's in there. 6)  Great stories abound about the cars, the drivers, the track events, the transits, and even some good hearted sponsor induced bounties for the event. 7)  We hope to have a few other teams on the podcast as well to discuss the event in coming episodes.

Podcast28: Remembering Bobby Sands, 40th Anniversary of his death on Hunger Strike   After listening, I hope you will feel we have a great show for you today. Y’know, we’ve always been green. When you want to know, where to go, what to do, to be seen, to make a difference, you come here, to iIrish: the Truth & the Pulse of what matters   So, Let’s get to it ~What’s the news today?   Well, the Yeats Tour yesterday was spectacular. Check it out for the online recording, and the next event. On Monday, my niece Lynnie is officially adopted, even though she has already been a member of our family for some time ~ I can’t wait; Tuesday is the Ancient Order of Hibernians Ohio State Convention, virtual this year; Wednesday, the May issue of the OhioIANews comes out, and President Biden addresses the nation; Thursday is the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians Irish Immigration presentation (virtual), and Thursday thru Sunday, the NFL Draft is hosted here in Cleveland; Sunday is Eastern Orthodox Easter; Monday the 3rd the new eBulletin comes out; Thursday the 4th is a primary election in many U.S. cities; the 6th is National Day of Prayer, and on our next podcast, St. Pat’s Gaelic Football Club President and Taking the Fields of Glory Columnist Vincent Beach joins us in the studio. On the 21st Podcast, we have new Irish Consul Kevin Byrne joining us.   Whew! Sounds like a great coupla of weeks. There is a varied mix of celebratory and solemn events coming up, for sure, each deserving of our attention. So make plan, if you can. No Regerts!   Have you picked up or read the April issue online yet? I cannot do justice to it, for I believe it is one of, if not the best, issue we have ever compiled. Pick one up at any of our 367 locations; the complete list of all distribution points, sorted by zip code, is on OhioIANews.com. It is free, or see the interactive copy online, with more to the story: more text, more pics, stories that didn’t make the print edition and LARGER Print. Stories on the legendary Sarah Makem, mother of Tommy Makem; Cleveland Irish Baseball in America; The Gaelic Football and Hurling Tournament coming to Cleveland next month; an Illuminating story on The Whiteboys, relative to today’s world; new Toledo Irish Columnist Molly McHugh’s Levi & Lilacs Coffee Pub; and a new occasional feature on Stone Mad, a joint effort by a Cleveland man John Digney and the Dry Wall Association of Ireland to understand and preserve the story of stone walls prevalent throughout Ireland. The walls were not randomly built; you will be very surprised at the meaning and measure taken there. So, what happened on this day in Irish history? On 23 April 1926 –New York novelist J.P. Donleavy was born. He was the son of Irish immigrants. He later moved to Ireland and wrote The Ginger Man, which became one of the top 100 selling books of all time in Ireland. On 29 April 1901 - James Stephens, chief founder of the Fenian Brotherhood, died. On 3 May 1903 - Bing Crosby was born in Tacoma, Washington, as Henry Lillis Crosby. On 5 May 1981 – Bobby Sands, the first republican prisoner to go on and to die in the 1981 hunger strike, went home to God.   I would like to tell you a bit about Bobby, and in context, the rest of the 1981 Hunger Strikers. Like everything Irish – the connections go person to person, family, village, generations and across ocean’s wide. The background begets better understanding of who we are, and why it matters. This was NOT the first Hunger Strike utilized by “those insolent Irish” in their fight for freedom from British Rule. To me, it was earned, at a terrible cost. It was the highest cost. I believe it was horribly effective, in producing change. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Adam Jabaay is a co-founder of the GridLife series and was kind enough to come onto our program to talk about GridLife and his driving and racing history.  We were told by several people at the track that we needed to attend a GridLife event and after doing some homework and talking with Adam, we agree.  The series is a mix of high level racing, HPDE, drifting, and a huge social aspect in the paddock.  We may need to take a vacation after the event to recuperate, lol.  You can find more info on GridLife at the website:  https://www.grid.life/ and we are anxiously waiting for the 2021 schedule to finalize our plans.  Also, please follow Adam on his podcast that is nearing 400 episodes, we are way behind.    We cover all the apexes on this episode of Dominating with Dawson.  If you were ever curious, we not only go into the different jargon/labels for apexes but what they mean and why they are where they are.  No mathematical geometry, nor proofs required.   We hope you enjoy this episode! Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage  Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Highlights from this episode include: 1)  Norm Abrams reference number one for our podcast, but that would be a WOOT episode. 2)  We recorded post the GridLife event at NOLA and Adam was still recovering, unpacking, and finding what he left at the track.  His phone battery did make it all the way through the episode though.  3)  How the Slip Angle podcast is the platform for communicating to the GridLife paddock and future paddock. 4)  Adam also covers a lot of the history of GridLife and the eternal question:  What is GridLife and what happens on a GridLife weekend.  Remember the first rule: it stays at GridLife.  We are hoping to attend the Gingerman event if it is during the summer when school is out.  5)  Sprint Races?  Check.  HPDE?  Check.  Time Attack?  Yep.  Drifting?  Check.  Concerts?  You bet.  Post-race weekend hangover included free of charge.  6)  What is GLTC?  How it became what it is?  How to build a car for it?  It’s all in here.  Once class to rule them all. 7)  What is the Time Attack event?  What cars and levels/classes are available?   Where would your car fit?  A summary is here, but likely you should review the rule book for final classing determination. 8)  What is a festival event vs a normal weekend? 9)  How does drifting fit into the weekend?  What types of drifting events do they hold?  10)  How GridLife can have several thousand spectators at these events. 11)  How the first ever tandem drifting competition went at NOLA?  How someone can drift through turn 12 at Road Atlanta or even through the esses? 12)  Can we hope to see an endurance type event at GridLife?  Asking for a friend. 13)  GridLife iRacing?  Yep.  Also, GridLife has been on Forza.  Adam and the team are even working on a festival type event, perhaps even for this off season. 14)  Tips and tricks for attending a GridLife event.  Stay at the track.  Come with a car already prepared.  Sleep the week before. 15)  You can't have Adam Jabaay on a not discuss RV’s.  So, we did.  And his latest exploits going down to NOLA.  Trailer hub maintenance is a real thing.  16)  The weirdest recommendation to buy Koni shocks ever.

WARNING: This edition of the podcast contains much bad language. In 1959, J.P Donleavy brought his masterpiece The Ginger Man to the stage. Richard Harris stepped into the very big boots of Sebastian Dangerfield. In England, the censor was horrified and the public complained, but in Ireland things played out differently. This is the story of one of the great banned masterpieces of the Irish twentieth century, The Ginger Man.

From Joe Jackson's introduction to his 2017, RTE Radio 1 programme, The Joe Jackson Tapes Revisited: JP Donleavy, which, was “pulled” from broadcast by RTE and has never been heard until now. Copyright Joe Jackson. ‘If like me you came of age during the 1970s and dreamed of one day becoming a writer you must have read, loved, and being influenced by, at least one of JP Donleavy's books. Be it The Ginger Man, Fairy Tale of New York - yeah one of the inspirations behind Shane McGowan's song of the same name – or, The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B. But back in 1990, despite my delight in meeting one of my old literary heroes, and my fondness for many of his old books at a time when one of his more recent was JP Donleavy's Ireland, I did bring a more critical - deconstructionist, in fact - sensibility to bear on the man's work. Specifically, when it came to his representation of women, sexual politics, race, class, and more so what to me and two others seemed to be Donleavy's deification of the Anglo Irish ascendancy.'

Jen, Vicki, and Bill review how the NASA Great Lakes HPDE event at PittRace went last weekend.  It is our team's most anticipated HPDE event of the year and we were not disappointed.  Jennifer had our friend Chris as her instructor for the entire weekend and it showed as she progressed dramatically through the event in her ND Miata.  Vicki was also in HPDE 1 with another friend Jim as her student partner and also learned a ton, especially related to weight transfer in her NB Miata.  Bill was in the HPDE 2 group with both Chrissy and Jeff in the E36 race car and the stock Toyota 86 for this weekend.  With COVID 19 controls in place, there was no right seat driving instruction option, but NASA Great Lakes is continually learning, adapting, and responding with improvements that allow for a great amount of instruction for every student.   The Dominating with Dawson segment for this episode was initially in the area of coasting but we quickly wandered off into proper use and application of the throttle and aspects of controlled or over controlled track driving as opposed to pushing the limit and getting out of a comfort zone.   We hope you enjoy the episode!   Best regards,   Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast   and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  Our group of 7 brought 7 cars with us and Chris did his best Randy Pobst impersonation by driving almost every one of them during the weekend. 2)  Our teams struggle with car preparation and timing continued and we agree they must be addressed going forward. 3)  Jen, Vicki, and Bill all had goals going into the event, largely as we discussed after our last HPDE at GingerMan several weeks ago. 4)  Track learning/prep is very important to allow us to focus on our driving and not be distracted by "learning" the track at the same time for a new to us track 5)  We discuss the Saturday event and the Sunday event and how we did not prepare our meals as well as normally because we were way behind.  Sorry to our camp sharing friends. 6)  Vicki converts Jen's RV sink into a disposal, for a short time. 7)  We compare and contrast HPDE 1 and HPDE 2 from this event. 8)  We individually cover the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from the event 9)  Vicki "surveyed" the track extensively after turn 10 during her spin on Saturday.  Vicki did get to wave to Jennifer as she drove by a bit later. 10)  Chrissy, Vicki, and Chris encountered a handling issue on the NB Miata that was easily fixed by adjusting the adjustable shocks in the rear.  Who knew?  PS We are sorry for not listening to you earlier Chrissy. 11)  Jen solved her downshifting issue going into a turn that has plagued her to this point.  This was solved by slowing down by letting out the clutch, especially on track.  The best part is that Jennifer can also practice this on the street during her daily driving. 12)  Jennifer failed miserably by not getting her training partner over to our podcast.  Lol. 13)  We learned a lot from this event both about our prep and our driving. 14)  Bill admits we have too many cars and need to downsize significantly. 15)  Vicki summarizes our teams learning and progress to this point. 16)  Vicki's "ah ha" moment included understanding weight transfer and improving her down shifting/sequencing going into turns.  Hopefully, this will help when she races a front wheel drive car again. 17)  Jennifer's "ah ha" moment included shifting and especially downshifting and actually her hearing tires "sing" through the turns for the first time ever on track. 18)  Bill's "ah ha" moments included 1) Bringing Lemons "skills" and HPDE "skills" together into a complimentary driving style utilizing both, 2) Comparison and E36 race car and the Toyota 86 street car, and 3) How significant the difference between sticker tires and scuffed tires.  We won't be sending any of our newer drivers out on track with sticker tires ever. 19)  Vicki did not get out onto the track in the E36 BMW race car due to an accident in the prior session closing the track on Sunday prematurely. 20)  Some of the advantages of lead follow and some of the difficulties we saw.  NASA Great Lakes addressed these by actually switching the lead follow to what is essentially a switch of the cars into a "follow - Lead" where the student is in front of the instructor at several points. 21)  Goals for our next HPDE event for each of us.

Bill Griffin has worked his way up to through the HPDE ranks to where he is a racing driver as well as an instructor, actually Jennifer's instructor from GingerMan a few weeks back.  We talk with him about his history and progression from having zero experience in performance driving to where he competes regularly with NASA and Grid Life as well as instructing when he can.  Bill grew up liking racing as many people who grew up near Indianapolis did and eventually began driving himself when his work and family life allowed, proving again that it is never too late to start to enjoy performance driving and even racing.  He is a very relaxed and knowledgeable driver and Jennifer loved having him as an instructor.  We cover how the NASA Great Lake GingerMan HPDE classes went without being able to have in car instruction and offer several options that may be ways to improve the teaching methods without right seat instruction as an option due to COVID 19.  The event was awesome, but as with everything else, you can always improve, in everything.  You can follow him on Instagram at Bill Griffin.   On one of our simplest episodes of Dominating with Dawson we review crabbing or cheating into a corner.   We hope you enjoy the episode!   Best regards,   Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  We cover Bill's progressions from newbie track driver and not terribly mechanical to a regular racing driver and instructor (who has been to the track 5 weeks straight and counting) (Very jealous) 2)  What is a competition (or race) license, as well as several methods and paths towards getting one. 3)  Bill seeks guidance to how to schedule a season of racing with the rest of our team.  Perhaps an appointment for hearing testing is in order. 4)  Bill also goes into a quick review of some of the exotic sports cars he gets to drive with Extreme Experience and their clients.  This is especially useful if you are taller, like Bill who is 6' 4". 5)  Bill (the other) also goes over the potential limits in size for a driver in a Mazda Miata MX-5.  We have seen one with a cage that fits the owner that was 6' 8" and swallowed Bill up quite easily. 6)  Bill even goes over why he chooses to remain instructing the HPDE 1 group of students. 7)  We cover how the NASA Great Lake GingerMan HPDE classes went without being able to have in car instructional and offer several options that may be ways to improve the teaching methods without right seat instruction as an option due to COVID 19.  The event was awesome, but as with everything else, you can always improve, in everything. 8)  Suggestions included 1) potentially using in car radios to communicate to the students, 2) lead follow groups of only two students, 3) only using partial lead follow (allowing students to assume lead position and instructor to follow), 4) perhaps grouping the instructors and cars to match performance, 5) using better/more universally defined hand signals, 6) more use of different cones for initial track learning, 7)  perhaps adopting an unofficial "HPDE 1.5" level/group within the HPDE 1 population, 8) incorporating the use of in car video, 9) positioning instructors with notebooks around the track to view at significant turns or areas of the track to provide feedback to the classroom or debrief sessions, 10) potential pathways to getting increased options for right seat/in car instruction. 9)  The tricks and differences in being an instructor in a lead follow environment versus being in the right seat and the potential for lead follow groups to become longer groups, which can make some of the instruction into a bad game of telephone. 10)  Riding a bike vs walking the track during a track walk. 11)  Several tips for new to track or high performance drivers. 12)  Bill unprompted supports Bill with the prep required before coming to the track as well as using 2-3 max goals and a few comments for each track session, especially during an HPDE event.  Now if we could only get the Wilson sisters to agree, lol. 13)  How your first few HPDE events can feel like your brain is drinking from a fire hose and how to potentially reduce this effect (like following the ideas from #12 above) 14)  Bill F. tries to sneak in a Good, The Bad, and the Ugly segment on how Jennifer did during here HPDE event.  Bill G. is much too nice to comply, but we will keep trying. 15)  How driving in a lead follow instruction environment make lengthening your vision particularly difficult. 16)  Tips for everyone (and us) on their next HPDE event.  Ours will be at Pitt Race in late July with NASA Great Lakes. 17)  The importance of focusing on consistently hitting your track marks and letting the speed build naturally.  Because it will. 18)  How teaching and instructing has helped Bill's racing and how Racing has helped him as an instructor.  Hopefully, it will help our Bill when he gets there, lol.

On this week's Dominating with Dawson, we go into a discussion to clarify apexes and Ben's approach and how the point of rotation can apply to your driving, including a discussion of Ken Hill s podcast and how we should approach this during he (at that point) upcoming HPDE at GingerMan.   We hope you enjoy the episode!   Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  We compare the structure of this HPDE which focuses on drills and with the COVID 19 separation not allowing for in car instruction at this point. 2)  The advantages and disadvantages of a lead follow, especially if it was a group of three this became more of an issue. 3)  How quickly NASA Great Lakes is responding to the new rules and conditions on track in a rapidly evolving climate and imposed rules by each state and track. 4)  What aspects of racing Vicki and Jen learned at this HPDE and what skills they refined during the weekend. 5)  How HPDE track days allow for focusing on the correct and repeatable line vs our racing where we rarely use the line and handle traffic while driving both on and offline. 6)  The drills we used during the weekend, including running the track in reverse. 7)  How a great track walk with a very large group led to great discussion and options for approaching several sections of the track that even some national champion drivers learned more about racing options at GingerMan. 8)  Ways to practice on your daily drive to help improve your track driving. 9)  Apex everything! 10)  The comparative differences between the HPDE 2 and HPDE 1 11)  The skid pad - Winter driving event we had scheduled for earlier this year is again one of the negative highlights for our season 12)  Vicki and Jen both had issue with getting their vision farther down the track, especially in the lead follow used during their HPDE 1 group. 13)  Both Vicki and Jen both felt their speed progressively increased on the track throughout the weekend.  It really was almost as if we needed a 1.5 level for these COVID impacted events. 14)  In car video issues during the weekend impacted our results but we discuss what we think the video will show of our driving through the weekend.  We shall see once we download our videos later this week. 15)  There were some pretty spectacular cars at GingerMan this weekend and we could not help but pick a few of our favorites that came to mind in our racing hangover induced state. 16)  Bill tries to work through Jennifer's acceleration issues during the weekend and hos hypothesis is that she isn't fully revving 17)  Bill inserts his foot fully into his mouth.  He will likely be sleeping in the bathtub for the rest of the week. 18)  Vicki almost got arrested for stealing as one night by mistake. 19)  Somehow, Vicki and Jennifer were introduced to the term Camber during our track walk for the first time.  Not sure how we missed it up to this point but apparently we did. 20)   We also went through our thoughts on the track and several of our favorite and more difficult turns for each of us. 21)  Vicki's favorite track of the weekend was NamregNig (GingerMan backwards) 22)  Bill tries to get out of the hole he dug with John Pagel.   A few hopefully helpful suggestions for NASA we think are: 1)  Groups of two students with each instructor max 2)  Group cars and instructors by style, i.e. low HP cars with low HP instructor cars etc. 3)  Perhaps a 1.5 level with less lead follow and more with the instructor in the position watching the student from behind.

Just in time for the upcoming NASA Great Lakes event at GingerMan, Chief Instructor Eric Meyer was kind enough to join us and discuss his past and current association with racing and instructing, as well as the genealogy and philosophy that has led to the current NASA Great Lakes HPDE program curriculum.  It is by far the best of the HPDE instruction we have attended across the country and we think highly enough of it that we regularly attend their HPDE events that are sometimes well over a 10 hour drive each way from us.  Eric also is another great counterexample of the false age-old adage about "those who can do, and those who can't teach" as he has won a ton of racing trophies in Grand Am, World Challenge, and Touring cars, among others.  Our Dominating with Dawson segment goes over the practice of left foot braking, its potential advantages, and how to try to begin to incorporate it into your driving repertoire. We hope you enjoy the episode and we would love to see you at the upcoming NASA Great Lakes event in GingerMan! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  How he originally started racing at a track and how quickly and deeply the hook was set. 2)  Some of the issues that he encountered when first entering the sport and how they shaped his interest in helping others 3)  Where he sees opportunities to continue to improve our sport and how he can give back to the racing community. 4)  How NASA Great Lakes history has led to their focus on the educational path has led to the current HPDE structure.  It is a great balance of driving on the track with the classroom and download education. 5)  Eric turns the table on Bill to answer Bill's own question.  It was tremendously fun and allowed Bill to brag about the NASA Great Lakes HPDE. 6)  A discussion on the priorities of teaching driving skills and situational awareness as foundational aspects of the NASA Great Lakes HPDE. 7)  We believe that we may have uncovered Eric is secretly competing in sewing.  We may be wrong. 8)  Eric also goes into some of the philosophy of what his team is looking for to progress through the levels as well as some of the criteria in transitioning from level one to level two, as an example. 9)  We discuss several of the drills that you will do within the various HPDE levels, some of which we have lovingly stolen and use on our track day practice sessions. 10)  We even go into some of the educational techniques former podcast guest John Santiago uses in the HPDE 1 classroom and track sessions.  Vicki and Jen will be getting the full experience next weekend.  Bill is jealous and will attend as many of their classroom sessions as his HPDE schedule permits. 11)  How has the COVID related challenges and rules impacted the event and the HPDE sessions specifically, especially the traditional right seat style in car coaching and the various group classroom sessions.  It sounds like things may be even better than the prior structure. 12)  One of the surprises we may see at GingerMan may have been revealed. 13)  Eric says that we need to add Mosport to the track bucket list and Bill is already pondering how to possibly get to the Chin event at Barber in November. 14)  Tips and tricks to the upcoming GingerMan event, both on track and off.  Jen is thrilled with the runoff areas GingerMan affords to assist with learning with less potential detrimental impact. 15)  We have an informal agreement to meet at the local microbrewery.  Now we just need to have time and energy. 16)  A Pinto makes a podcast appearance again, much to Vicki and Jen's pleasure. 17)  We aren't absolutely sure if Eric really liked our Fast and Furious questions but he really faked it well if he didn't. 18)  Eric has a weakness, and apparently it is Mazda rotary engines. 19)  If you are ever at a bar and need to know how many kegs you can fit into a 1964 Oldsmobile Cutlass, this is the podcast for you! 20)  Bill forgets to thank Eric for an earlier long conversation they had related to Bill's goal of becoming a qualified instructor as soon as possible.

Randy Bish is a relatively new lemons racer for the League of Legitimate Nigerian Businessmen racing team that is off to a spectacularly good start by making all the best bad decisions possible, including racing their 1972 Ford Pinto.  On this episode, we go over his racing experiences so far and cover the topic that no one ever thought they wanted to know:  what is the best way to race a Pinto in endurance racing.  Jennifer and Vicki particularly enjoyed this since their first car was also a 1972 Pinto.  Randy may be new to Lemons, but he seems to have found his tribe.    On Dominating with Dawson, Ben covers being on track for the first time, what to do, and what not to do.  It can be intimidating at first thought, but hopefully, this will assuage some of your potential concerns and give a brief guideline if you are going to a track for the first time and what the other drivers would like for you to do.  Short summary, stay on line, stay safe, and be predictable.  They also expect you to be off pace, so don’t worry about them or the F1 and Indy Car scouts in the grandstands.  To follow Randy and his team, you can find their team on Instagram or Facebook as the League of Legitimate Nigerian Businessmen with their official pace car of mediocrity. We hope you enjoy the episode!  The episode you never asked for. Best regards,   Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  Design discussion of why the flames go in reverse from the back of his Pinto.  Our more seasoned listeners likely already know. 2)  How he learned all the details of his grandfather while his grandpa was behind the while as Randy was a boy. 3)  A summary of his two races last year at Pitt Race and Gingerman with the 24 Hours of Lemons. 4)  Randy’s very novel and very lemons charity fund raising method on the 24 Hours of Lemons i-Racing events, how this horribly awesome idea came to be and how much money he was able to generate for charity at the cost of some of his liver.  Maybe someday he will remember the race, but we doubt it. 5)  We may actually have convinced Vicki to race this Thursday.  Tune in this Thursday and we shall see. 6)  Matt Ferenchak and Florida Man Donnie get a few mentions, some even complimentary, lol. 7)  Randy Bish tries out for being a spokesmen for the Michelin Ice-X tire for amateur endurance racing. 8)  How a water pump can become a spinning end mill of death. 9)  How the initial “success” at Pitt Race led to his team going all in and winning the Heroic Fix at their next race at Gingerman. 10)  We find out the Randy Bish has a car obsession with big, Detroit luxury boats, the floatier the better.  But that does not seem to explain his having owned 3 SVX’s. 11)  Their team’s experience as the unintentional role as the unofficial Yellow Flag “Pace Car” at Pitt Race. 12)  Randy actually was able to use the term provenance and Pinto in the same sentence.  Admirable. 13)  We go deeper than anyone ever thought possible into the advantages of a racing Pinto.  14)  “Tires are evil and must be punished”.  Words to live by.  And Jen’s train agrees. 15)  Bill gets an honorary place on Randy’s list of favorite drivers.  But it turns out to be kind of like winning the Heroic Fix award in Lemons. 16)  The El Jeffe makes a surprise appearance in being a desirable race car to swap into, but then again, Randy is used to driving a Pinto race car so….

More recently she began experimenting with apples and then after a motorcycle accident (she was hit by a NY cab) she thought of the old saying "We all have two lives and the second one starts the moment you realize you only have one". From that point on she been going 'full throttle' into cidermaking. Where can you find Big Apple Hard Cider? As it is a new cidery, it is still rolling out as this podcast goes live in the month of June. Mike received his BS from Florida International University in Hotel & Restaurant Management and has held nearly every position on offer in that field from busboy to line cook to hotel management. Mike has been passionate about beer, and all of it's distinct styles & flavors for longer than he'd care publish. He is currently the Beverage Manager at Tørst / Luksus, the global beer destination and Michelin-starred Restaurant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where he is responsible for curating the 21 rotating draft lines and an extensive bottle menu of around around 200 beers. http://punchdrink.com/articles/beer-cultures-second-wave-beer-bars-nyc/ http://food52.com/blog/13837-what-we-learned-during-a-shift-at-a-brooklyn-bar Erwin Klijn, Jopen Jopen is a beer brand from Haarlem, Netherlands. Jopen beer is a result of the work of Stichting Haarlems Biergenootschap, which was founded in 1992. The mission of the Biergenootschap is to re-create traditional Haarlem beers and bring them to the commercial market. Two recipes were found in the Haarlem city archives that were used as a foundation for 2 initial beers. The first one was a recipe from 1407 and the recreation of this was named Koyt. In December 1996 the commercial company Jopen BV acquired the beer. The name Jopen refers to the 112 litre beer barrels that were used in early times to transport the Haarlem beer. Until the end of 1996 Jopen beer was brewed in the Halve Maan brewery in Hulst, after that it was made in the La Trappe brewery in Berkel-Enschot. Since 2001 the Jopen beer brands were brewed in Ertvelde, Belgium, in brewery Van Steenberge. The current brewer is Chris Wisse. At the end of 2005 it was announced that the old Jacobskerk, in the Raaks area in the city centre of Haarlem, would be transformed into a brewery. In November 11, 2010, the "Jopenkerk" (Jopen church) opened its doors for the public. This former church is not only the home of the Jopen brewery but also hosts a café and restaurant. http://www.jopenbier.nl/en/discover-jopen/historie/ Anne Becerra – winter co-host, bartender, etc. Anne Becerra is still shocked that she's been able to turn her love for craft beer into a career. She was the first female Certified Cicerone in New York City and has been at the helm of some of the best craft beer bars in Manhattan for the last seven years, most recently at The Blind Tiger, The Ginger Man and as Beer Director for Taproom 307. Anne is a beer writer for Serious Eats and Martha Stewart Living, and has been featured multiple times on NBC, Fox and Friends and CNN as well as contributed to TIME Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Wall Street Journal, Sirius XM, USA Today and more. She was the only speaker at both Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans and the Women’s Chef and Restaurateur Conference in NYC to represent the beer industry, and believes the best part about craft beer is sharing it. You can catch her teaching classes, judging beer competitions, hosting beer dinners and weekly tasting events, and curating beer pairings throughout the tri-state area.

Tune in to this week's Beer Sessions Radio as host Jimmy Carbone and winter co-host Anne Becerra welcome Joe and Chris DeCicco of DeCicco Family Markets as well as Lars Dahlhaus, Eastern Sales Manager at Fentiman’s Inc, plus special guests from NYC's Fraunces Tavern. The three young scions of the family that founded the Westchester/Rockland DeCicco Markets dynasty—Joe and his cousins, brothers Chris and John—all share a passion for beer. The trio used the unglamorous fact that they were born into a supermarket family to launch themselves as heavy players in the local beer world. Look for the 10 DeCicco stores in Westchester and Rockland to carry between 400 and 1000+ beers each. Meanwhile, several of the DeCicco stores (Pelham, Harrison, Ardsley, Armonk, Cornwall, and Brewster) offer taps for growler fills. And two of the DeCicco Markets (Armonk and Brewster) actually offer craft-beer bars on the premises, which means that you can catch a buzz before doing your weekly shopping. The Armonk DeCicco is located next to Fortina and offers 28 taps for growler refills or for just hanging around drinking. Look for the DeCicco boys to collaborate with several local brewers including Sixpoint Brewery, Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, and Evil Twin Brewing. Also, look for DeCicco’s sponsorship at many local beer events, including Savor New York. Lars has a new company called "Liquid Projects" which incorporated in April of 2015. As the president of Schwelmer Beer Imports N.A., Lars has been importing the Craft Beers from his hometown as well as other Bavarian beers such as Lammsbrau, Miltenberger, Meckatzer and Eichbaum to name a few since 2003. From 2011 to 2014 Lars has been the Craft Beer Portfolio Manager at St. Killian, responsible for such renowned brands as Wuerzburger and again Lammsbrau. During his time there he launched and established Crabbie’s from the UK, 961 from Lebanon, Andechs and Rothaus from Germany. The burning desire to offer an innovative and cost-effective way to international producers is what started Liquid Projects. Lars has been a resident of Williamsburg, Brooklyn for 18 years.

This week on Beer Sessions Jimmy and Ray sat down with Seth Wright and Mike Winn of BeerNation.com, a weekly video-based beer blog packed with interviews and a general visual chronicling of the craft beer movement. They were joined by David Urbanos of the iconic “The Ginger Man” beer bar where, from the birth of the American craft beer movement through present day, many a Beer Sessions host or guest has explored the “monster” 70 draught lines. The group was joined by Carolyn Steel, author of “Hungry City” and an expert on food and architecture whose lauded “Food and the City” class at Cambridge combines both. Carolyn, a central London native, expounded on the role of the pub in England today and 200+ years ago, and explained why “small beer” was more popular than water. This episode was sponsored by Great Brewers.com: a favorite source for beer information and education.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the writer J P Donleavy. The author of a dozen novels as well as numerous plays and short stories, he remains best known for his first novel, The Ginger Man, which is widely regarded as a modern classic. Born in 1926 and raised in New York, J P Donleavy was the son of Irish immigrant parents. They told him little of Irish culture when he was growing up but, after the war, he moved to Dublin to take up a place at Trinity College. He was already a skilled boxer when he arrived in Ireland and found that street-fighting was almost a form of public entertainment in the city - and one which he excelled in. Despite Trinity's stature, his student life revolved around drinking, partying, writing and painting. He became friends with Brendan Behan and the legendary Irish writer became the first person to read the completed script of The Ginger Man. Although The Ginger Man was banned in Ireland and expurgated in Britain and America it became a word-of-mouth success. But its publication plunged J P Donleavy into a legal battle that took 20 years to resolve. It was a legal struggle, though, that was worth fighting for - for the past 50 years it has never been out of print.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: 2nd movement of Emperor Concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven Book: 1972 Social Registry of New York Luxury: His own long-handled spoon to make dressings.
