My guest this week is Scott Gray is an Artist and DJ from London. He is joint founder of Ibiza's iconic Melon Bomb DJ collective and creator of the art and design brand Chapter. The Island of Ibiza (where Scott now resides) is the main influence and really kick-started his art and musical career. We met at Scott's home in Ibiza - where the walls are filled with his favourite art and he serves a cracking cup of coffee. We talked about the incredible change Scott and his wife Mandy created in their lives - when whilst on holiday in Ibiza Scott has a near breakdown moment and realised he could not continue with his stressful if successful career in recruitment. Another life called them. Fast forward a few years and Scott followed his intuition again to bring together some fellow DJs to create the now globally renowned and frankly Island favourite - House Music Collective Melon Bomb. We talk about the life of a DJ, the joys the pressures the creative process and of course just what it's like to move a crowd to your rhythms. I really enjoyed getting to know Scott better through this chat and he says an abundance of wisdom and advice for anyone thinking about change and anyone finding their mojo not to be in the groove they'd like. This week on The Mojo Podcast we land on a subject which is likely to effect us all at some point, to some degree. We're talking about stress and specifically the stress that can come from working your way to the top of your game or profession and then the ongoing battle to stay there. Our conversation centres around my old industry - advertising and media. A dynamic, fast paced & intense business which I found mostly fun & enjoyable but looking back I know I was in a stressed state for more time than is probably healthy. You may have seen the brilliant dramatisation of 1960s era advertising set in New York with Don Draper as the charismatic chauvinistic brilliant and flawed lead character - well today we dip into the other reason Mad Men maybe gets its title. I'm joined by Peter Magnani - Peter was my very first boss in advertising - and I have to say with all honesty - he helped guide me and mentor me for those key early years of anyones career. We then worked in different and competitive agencies - always in touch but not close enough for me to know what he was experiencing Very candidly Peter shares his mojo story - of great success and peak moments, and of the grind and sacrifice which characterise many careers. You'll hear that when he should have been celebrating his greatest business triumph he was actually in the midst of a profound stress-induced episode. Peter decided to make a profound change his life and founded Beam in 2019, developed on the twin foundational pillars of “open data for good” and ‘helping people to help themselves” by empowering them to better manage everyday micro-stressors and prevent them building up into anxiety or depression. Prior to launching Beam, Peter worked in the advertising and media industry at Interpublic and Omnicom across brands such as Apple, Google, and Vodafone. As with many others around the world he has in the past struggled with stress and three years ago decided to apply his knowledge of behavioural analytics, insight, and technology to developing a data-led, self-management tool that was accessible and affordable for individuals and businesses Available for free currently, Beam allows every person suffering stress to intervene on their own behalf. It helps people join the dots making life less complex and more manageable by helping people discover the “stories in their data”. You can download the BEAM app to take a look by clicking this link: https://www.beamandme.com/get-beam/ or go to the website: https://www.beamandme.com/ and can view a short explainer video at: https://vimeo.com/537442811 for more information Remember to subscribe to be notified about new episodes. Danny has travelled & lived all over the world choosing to make Ibiza his home base. His energy is focused in creating transformational retreats, life coaching, helping people to create ‘THE DESTINY OF THEIR DREAMS', working with healing modalities including Kambo (an Amazonian frog medicine) and creating incredible dance event spaces under the project name LOVE Dance.

My guest this week is Vedic Mediation teacher - Jillian Lavender. Here she is in her words... When I learned to meditate back in 1995 I had no idea that I would end up being a full-time meditation teacher. At the time I was walking right up to the line of a major burnout. Living in Sydney, setting up a publishing company, spending my life on a plane. I felt tired and stressed. On the recommendation of a friend I took the course and from that point things changed for me in a big way. My life was still full-on but I could handle it. I wasn't exhausted. I felt the anxiety melt away. I was better at my job and I was nicer to be around. And I knew it was meditation that was making the difference. Fast-forward five years and (after a stint in Paris) I was living in London and looking for a change. I quit the big CEO job and travelled for a year. Then I took up the invitation of my teacher, Thom Knoles, to train with him one-on-one in the U.S. and India. In 2003 I graduated and came back to London to start teaching. In 2005 Michael and I met in India on a retreat and after some long-distance back and forth he moved from LA to London. We live together, teach together and have a daughter so we are partners in every sense. India is special for us and we're there at least once a year to teach and study. I feel grateful to be able to teach Vedic Meditation. Helping people be their best has always been the thing that motivates me. In my experience meditation is the tool that has the power to transform. I love seeing that process play out with our students. Welcome to the summary episode for the 4th series of The Mojo Podcast - The Founders. In this series I had the pleasure of talking to 13 successful founders and magnificent human beings over the 10 episodes in the season. Busy people who created the time to talk to me and share with you the secrets of their 'founder mojo'. I sought out a diverse group of founders to ask them about what mojo means to them as an entrepreneur and a leader. It's been one of my favourite series for many reasons: meeting amazing new people, reconnecting with old friends, sharing the ‘special sauce' of successful founders – how they keep their Mojo high and flowing in, let's be honest, often very testing and stressful circumstances. Because founding anything, be it a business or movement or community, is not easy. However the mojo upside when successful can be huge. Thank you to all my guests - here is the full line from series 4: Ep1: Ally Owen - Brixton Finishing School Ep2: Ben Gallagher - B&A Ep3: Kate & Laura - Liberty Hive Ep4: Jen & Sally - Craft Media Ep5: Laura Clacey - Sxollie Cider Ep6: Anda Gansca - Knotch Ep7: Josh Scacheri - LoveHero Ep8: Karen Cinnamon - Smashing The Glass / Your Jewish Life Ep9: Anna & Cal - Shine For Women Ep10: Jamie McCloskey - Lover Corn This episode is a short 20 minute summary of the key themes that emerged for me from my conversations. Far from being an exhaustive list of everything that came up - there were just too many tips and insights across the 10 episodes to do that. I hope this episode shines a light on what's going on for these Founders and how they maintain their mojo in order to realise success (however they define it). I firmly believe that great things sit within all of us, we have amazing potential when we decide to commit to creating our own reality. Its my encouragement and wish that you find your thing – whatever shape it takes – and I believe you'll find that you have the mojo in place to make it happen. Thanks for all the love and support for series 4, the next series will be emerging into the light in September - look out for that by subscribing to the Mojo Podcast wherever you find your podcasts. Until then - I hope your mojo continues to flow Richard x The Mojo Podcast Hosted by leadership coach Richard Stokes from Ibiza @mojorichard on Instagram www.mojodevelopment.co.uk richard@mojodevelopment.co.uk #founders #mojo #cofounders #entrepreneurs #mojopodcast #keythemes #takeaways #summary
Welcome to the final episode of the 4th series of the Mojo Podcast - and what a way to finish. This week I talk to Jamie McCloskey the co-founder of fast-growing snack brand Love Corn It was a conversation with Jamie 3 years ago that led to the seed of an idea that eventually became The Mojo Podcast. I was fascinated about Jamie's ability to take all his skills, strengths and positive beliefs from a (in his words) "19-year apprenticeship in media" to the demanding world of a start-up brand in Food & Beverage. It took us 3 years to get a chance to record but I think it's worth the wait as the episode is chock full of inspiration. Whether you're in a place where you're thinking about a move or a change of direction and perhaps you're wondering if you have the skills and strengths for that new thing. Jamie shines a light on how to transfer not just skills BUT most importantly how to bring an abundant & positive mindset to a new challenge. As you'll hear, Jamie spent his career working for challenger brands in the media sector and now he relishes being a challenger in snack food - different industry same mindset. What a great way to finish this series. Please share you own take-outs from the series on my Linked In page I'd love to hear what you think and also your suggestions for future guests. Remember to subscribe to be notified about new episodes. And please do rate & review this episode on Apple Podcasts. Hope you love it Richard x The Mojo Podcast will return for series 5 in September 2022 - in which I'll focus on conversations with The Practitioners - the people who can help you get your mojo flowing again. To mark the 50th episode of The Mojo Podcast, I invite two great friends and highly successful founders onto the show for a really insightful and powerful chat about the founder mojo. Anna Barez-Brown and Caroline 'Cal' Whaley launched Shine 4 Women 9 years ago after both having successful corporate careers but looking for their next step - in their language, this 'bigger game' of founding theor own business. They found each other, they created their product and brought it to market. Our chat is a wonderful reflection on what they've done and plan to do next. Shine 4 Women is dedicated to making business more human by enabling more women to reach the top and teams to have open, honest conversations that bring empathy, trust and inclusion. They have worked with 10,000 women (and hundreds of men) across 75 nationalities, empowering them to lead the change they want to see. As I mention, I'm very proud to be one of the Senior Leaders at Shine - but in this conversation I discover so much more about both Anna and Cal and the business they have created. It's a great conversation. Here's more about them individually. Anna is a renowned executive coach and has spent the last two decades helping women and men reach the top of their careers. Before setting up her coaching company in 2001 she had a corporate career working for Axel-Springer and Bertelsmann in Hamburg and London overseeing their European Marketing and Sales activities. Anna is a CTI leadership coach, a Neuro Lingustic Master Practitioner and a qualified Organisational Relationship Systems Coach. Anna has two children and lives with her husband Chris and their two dogs in Lyme Regis in the UK. She is lucky enough to have an office with a sea view. Cal built her career in the adventure travel industry before joining Nike in 1996 where she spent 14 years in senior global brand marketing and GM roles in UK, Europe, North America and Latin America. Following this, she spent three years with the Nike Foundation, leading public-private sector partnerships and creating new brands to inspire, empower and shift social norms for millions of teenage girls living in Africa as the fastest route to eradicating global poverty. Cal is also a qualified Organisational Relationships Systems Coach and has an MBA (Distinction) from Lancaster University. When not traveling extensively for work and pleasure, Cal can be found running through Dorset with her spaniel or sailing with her husband, Tim. This week we explore the passion behind the underdog. We delve into the fashion industry and understand the mojo required to make change. After years of working for global brands and retailers, Joshua Scacheri recognised that there was an alternative way of doing things that was less damaging to the planet. Joshua envisaged a mindset change and business model shift that didn't have to compromise success in today's industry. Identifying that some brands who wanted change didn't want real change. Joshua took matters into his own hands and pursued the change he wanted to see, through LOVE HERO. Developing a brand whose DNA has a more conscious and sustainable approach embedded from within. LOVE HERO has just been awarded by Drapers as part of the Sustainable Fashion Awards 2022 Please share you own take-outs from the series on my Linked In page I'd love to hear what you think and also your suggestions for future founder guests. My guest this week is Anda Gansca the Co-Founder and CEO of Knotch, the content intelligence platform enabling companies like Zillow, Dropbox, Walmart, Bank of America, Salesforce and others to accelerate content-driven customer journeys. A regular thought leadership contributor to the trade media and industry at-large, Anda has been named to both Forbes' and Inc.'s annual 30-Under-30 lists, AdWeek's Young Influential List, Campaign's Female Frontiers List, and AdWeek's Top 100 Creatives, to name a few. We talk about growing up in a former communist country, being an immigrant in the US, the value of coaching and therapy, how to lead with an open heart and open mind and what it's like to be a new mother in the world of tech. And her personal definition of mojo - 'being in touch with your own truth'. An abundance of important themes and a cascade of priceless insight. This really is a lesson in a modern form of leadership - what we could call 'Conscious Leadership' Please share you own take-outs from the series on my Linked In page I'd love to hear what you think and also your suggestions for future founder guests. This week on The Mojo Podcast we have a look at what it's like to launch a business with your life partner as your business partner. I talk to Laura Clacey who together with her husband Karol Oataszewski launched the modern craft cider brand - SXOLLIE - over 8 years ago. This episode introduces a completely new dynamic to the founders story and Laura is highly generous in sharing her insights into how a relationship forged in love makes complete sense in the world of business and that particularly challenging area - that of a start up. We also talk about how they have built a brand in the right way - as they are a proud B Corp business and we talk about that towards the end in celebration of B Corp month in March. In this episode you'll hear what is crucial for finding your way together as life and business partners - brutal honestly, long term planning, understanding each others skills and strengths, and how to build a formidable level of resilience when things don't go to plan - and guess what, there have been plenty of bumps in the road for the Sxollie founders. This is a wonderful chat with a really bouyant founder who understands why she and her husband have been successful I really enjoyed this conversation and I'm sure you will to - whether you're thinking of starting up with your partner, or going solo. As ever it's jam packed full of support and insight. About SXOLLIE: SXOLLIE is on a mission to show people that there is an ethical apple beverage out there that you will love, and a cider good enough to replace that glass of wine or G&T. Made naturally like a wine with Champagne yeast and only your favourite eating apples, grown in the South African sunshine – nothing else. It makes for a decidedly different cider. That's why we call it xider. SXOLLIE is the first UK cider company to obtain the prestigious B Corp Certification and is available at selected Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Tesco and Morrisons stores as well as the exclusive cider at Nando's nationwide. Thank you also to Patricia Bacon for the introduction to Laura And the "bitesize mediatations" idea came from Sarah Matlock Please share you own take-outs from the series on my Linked In page I'd love to hear what you think and also your suggestions for future founder guests. Another week, another birthday celebration. This time we mark the 4th anniversary of the founding of Craft Media. And I'm delighted to say again a success story of two female founders: Jen Smith & Sally Weavers. This is a brilliant conversation which I could subtitle - "The Power of a Chat over a Cup of Tea". As this is how they came together as a foiunding duo, and how they make connections with clients, partners and their team. It's all about connection. Craft is a communication consultancy, deliberately designed to be able to adapt to the ever-changing needs of clients and the wider industry. Craft believes a great communication plan can bring everything together. Making sure the right brief is written, that media and creative are aligned around a real understanding of consumer behavior, having absolute certainty around how a brand behaves, and an intrinsic knowledge of media channels – what they do, how they work and the role they play in consumers lives – is the path to brilliant work and outstanding results. Since launch they have worked inside creative agencies (Grey, Uncommon, Lucky Generals) directly with clients (Nike Swim, ASOS, Which?) with media owners (Shortlist, Whatweseee, Vice) and with media agencies (Mindshare, Wavemaker, MC&C) Please share you own take-outs from the series on my Linked In page I'd love to hear what you think and also your suggestions for future founder guests. On this week's epsiode we celebrate the first birthday of the business founded by my guests Kate Merritt & Laura Braithwaite. In Febuary 2021, Kate and Laura launched Liberty Hive connecting media, marketing and martech specialists to businesses quickly and easily. Their vision is to disrupt the media industry by dialling up flexibility in the workplace, made possible by creating a dedicated technology platform for media specialists and companies. Turning the tables on traditional recruitment, the instant matching technology means Liberty Hive behaves more like a dating service for the industry! However, it's not all about the tech as both founders recognise the importance of the personal touch and love nothing more than talking to their new and growing media community – they are always up for a chat and a cuppa. Between them, they have a combined media experience of over 50 years working at global networks, independent agencies as well as media owners including Dentsu, OMD, Rocket, Hearts & Science, Publicis, BLM, Havas, WPP, ITV and The Telegraph. They believe it's this industry knowledge and network that sets them apart. Ultimately, it is a love of the media industry and a determination to make a positive change for talent that drives their ambitious plans for Liberty Hive. Hybrid working, accelerated diversity and inclusion, flexible work/life balance, and agile resourcing are all things they support and celebrate at Liberty Hive – these are the reasons they launched nearly a year ago. My guest founder this week is Ben Gallagher from B+A - a research and strategy consultancy. Ben began his career as a journalist working at the intersection of youth culture and politics on the team that launched Sir David Frost's seminal magazine programme with Al Jazeera International. Following this he worked as a strategist at a number of leading London advertising agencies before crossing to a client side role at Nike UK. After 3 years leading the Insight and Creative Strategy team at the Nike Foundation (Nike's Corporate Foundation). Ben launched B+A with his co-founder Andrew Missingham. Throughout his varied career the constant thread has been a constant ambition to understand the truth of the human experience and how this can be shaped to create a better world in the future. In this epsiode we look back over the 8 years of the company's history to understand what lay the foundations for the success they enjoy today - doing great work with an array of incredible clients - and fundamentally solving problems for them. You'll hear about the time Ben & Andrew spent working each other out - were they right for each other? When they understood the need to put principle before profit and walked away from their 1st client. How to grow and scale a team and to carefully manage their pace of growth. And how to create not just a business but a movement for change. And here we are, the final episode of a wonderfully varied 3rd series of The Mojo Podcast. And what a way to finish, a hugely enjoyable and inspiring conversation with former England Rugby 7s captain, Ollie Phillips. But being a former Rugby professional (and once voted best 7s player in the world) is a mere snippet of who Ollie is. He's a global adventurer, world record holder, entrepreneur and businessman, journalist and commentator and most importantly, husband and father. We talk about Ollie's mojo story which centres around the challenging transition he made from the rugby pitch to the boardroom. It wasn't easy, it wasn't pain-free and took him to areas of massive self-awareness. There is so much to learn from in this episode - whatever the change or transition your comtemplating - there is something for everyone here. This week's episode is all about dreaming big, no matter what the obstacles in your way might be. I have the great pleasure of talking to Captain Donald Lawson about his dream to be the first African American to compete in the epic and perilous Vendée Globe Non-Stop-Solo-Round-The-World yacht race in 2024. His course towards this epic voyage was set at the age of 9 when he found himself on a large sailboat, talking to the captain about the fact this boat could go all the way around the world. Since that day, this has been Donald's passion and purpose. He is a highly qualified and experienced sailor and instructor - spending time with the US Navy. Indeed, he calls sailing the greatest teacher there is. But he's the thing. As a man of colour, this path was not an obvious one and sometimes not one encouraged by other yacht club members, as you'll hear. Captain Lawson acknowledges the vital role in his development of allies and mentors such as legendary US sailor, Bruce Schwab. Indeed, if you'd like to see some video of life in The Southern Ocean - check out this film of Bruce talking about his Vendee experience - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2OhD7nY6GY When you consider how few people have since the Vendee Glove began in 1989, only 71 sailors have successfully completed the course. You get a sense of just how tough and demanding Donald's voyage will be. But armed with the mojo he has, and the support of loved ones, friends and an amazing support team at Whitecap Sailing You wouldn't want to bet against him. Donald is breaking down barriers each step of his way - those in the ocean from Mother Nature and also those imposed by a society where so few people of colour have been encouraged to sail. You can follow Captain Lawson's progress to his goals via his Instagram @captdlawson and his Facebook @CaptainDonaldLawson Remember: Dream, Believe, Do. A real treat of an episode this week as I interview someone whose books I've devoured and whose podcast I can't get enough of. He is somone who is exceptionally well placed to talk about mojo in sport. Professor Damian Hughes is a sports psychologist and visiting professor at Manchester Metropolitan University. An expert on high-performance sporting cultures, Damian's research has been praised by the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Muhammad Ali, Sir Roger Bannister, Tiger Woods, Jonny Wilkinson and Sir Alex Ferguson. He is an incredible observer of human performance through his rare ability to get very close to both sports people and sports organisations. He is able to do this by creating incredible levels of trust, based on both is values and trade-mark behaviours. Both of which we talk about extensively. Hence his ability to see success up close and the clues that success leaves behind. I highly recommend you check out The High Performance Podcast where Damian is the ying to Jake Humphrey's yang. It's a great example of how collaboration and team work can create amazing things. @highperformance I also recommend Damian's book The Barcelona Way and we talk about where the current FC Barcelona team is, mojo-wise. Damian has written many other books and is a high-demanded speaker and workshop leader - you can find out more on his website or his Instagram @liquidthinker I really enjoyed this chat - hope you enjoy it too. This week I have the great pleasure of talking to a role model from the world of Women's Rugby Marlie Packer plays her club rugby for Saracens and is a regular in the England team. She has a long list of accolades to her name. From her position as flanker she helped England win the Rugby World Cup 2014, in 2017 was a losing finalist vs New Zealand, she is a 4 x Grand Slam winner, and also regular 7s player. Recently she was named by the Daily Telegraph as one of the best 10 women rugby players in the world. Marlie provides a first-hand perspective of the growth of the women game - from her first experiences aged just 6, to making the England team in the pre professional era. And how now as a full time professional this has allowed her game to flourish but also means she can ‘play it forward' and through her exploits encourage more girls to take up the game. A key theme is certainly around making sure you work hard at surrounding yourself with the right people. This has really helped Marlie when there are set-backs and adversity - be that sporting ones or life in general So yes, we talk about radiators - not simply the ones in your house that she's qualified to fix but more the people you need around you to learn from, feel encouragement and support from during the highs and the lows of life in an elite team sport set up and in your life outside of sport. Not least her partner Tash and their little boy Oliver. You can follow Marlie on Instagram @marlie_packer Thanks again to the Athlete Media Group for setting this up. This week my guest is Duncan Slater, former Royal Airforce infantry solider and his story of injury, recovery and incredible sporting achievement. We start in the far north of Scotland, then move to war-torn Afghanistan before taking us to the searing heat of the Saharan desert in southern Morocco. Duncan talks very candidly about the incident in Afghanistan which left him critically injured after his patrol was hit by an IED. We talk about the choice Duncan faced - whether to keep his injured legs or amputate. Having cycled Lands End to John O'Groats just months after losing both legs, then walking to the South Pole with Prince Harry and completing the London Marathon - he still wanted to do more, push himself further and raise more money and awareness - to ultimately answer the question "what am I capable of now?” The second half of our chat is the story of how Duncan took on and eventually completed the toughest footrace on the planet - without feet - and he became the first double amputee to complete the fabled Marathon des Sables in 2017. The Marathon des Sables, or MdS, is a six-day, 251 km ultramarathon, which is approximately the distance of six regular marathons. The longest single stage is 91 km long. Here is an ITV News clip of his preparation for the 2017 race It's an amazing conversation. Please do remember to subscribe, leave a 5 Star rating AND write a short review on Apple Podcasts. This week on The Mojo Podcast we delve into the world of US College sports: high stakes, high pressure environments where massive professional contracts in the NFL or NBA can be dreamed of, but only for the very talented few. A world where student athletes combine full-time studies with elite level full-time athletic performance. Indeed, US College sports collectively takes more annual revenue than any other professional sports leagues in the world, bar the NFL. I have an amazing guest to shine a light on what it's like to play and live in this rarefied atmosphere. Skylar Thompson is the starting quarterback at Kansas State University and he is the real deal. He has been setting the highly competitive Big 12 football conference alight over the past three years. A 30-game starter, which is the third most among K-State quarterbacks since 1990. He is know as a dual-threat QB, because he runs the ball as well as throwing it. He is just the second player in his school history to throw for 5,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a career. He has enormous talent and is widely tipped to be a future NFL player. Don't worry if you're not an American football fan, we don't go deep into the intricacies of a game which can be physically brutal but also nuances and highly strategic. Skylar and I focus our conversation around how he handles the demands of playing “the hardest position in US sport” that of quarterback. The pressure on student athletes and the weight of expectations from fans and family and how he deals with it. And how he is dealing with injury right now and how he's stayed 100% connected to his team during his rehab. We also talk about adversity and Skylar has a deeply painful story he shares around loss - he talks about how he not just survived this period but thrived as a consequence. Skylar - it's hard to believe sometimes - is only 23, but his maturity, focus and humility are incredible. He shares his approach to leadership and talks about how his mojo can radiate and impact the mojo of his team mates. Find out more about Skylar via his very popular Instagram @skylar10thompson or via the Kansas State University site I hope you enjoy it Richard x The Mojo Podcast Hosted by leadership coach Richard Stokes from Ibiza @mojorichard on Instagram www.mojodevelopment.co.uk richard@mojodevelopment.co.uk #skylarthompson #collegefootball #ncaaf #collegesports #nfl #quarterback #playbook #winning #leadership #pressure #expectation #injury #studentathlete #kansasstate #kstate #kansas #wildcats #mojo #podcast #adversity #big12 #family #faith #football #rockbottom #goals #focus #underneaththejersey #team #leader
This week The Mojo Podcast meets Adam Burgess, TeamGB canoe slalom medal prospect at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. In a sport where the margins are so fine, where your course is constantly moving and flowing and the difference between winning Gold and coming in 10th maybe a couple of seconds. Success is as likely to be down to how you set up mentally for a run as your physical preparedness and skill. Adam talks about how he has plugged a more holistic, mindful set of practices to help him find a greater chance of success. We talk about how he has learned to be incredibly present and literally stay in the flow. How he quietens any doubt in his mind by filling his ‘box' with positive intention And how he deliberately trains for highly pressurised situations. As an elite athlete, naturally we talk about dealing with the set-backs of injury and failure. Adam reveals he's embraced a more holistic approach to living that have allowed him to bounce back faster and better than before. Drawing inspiration from yoga, meditation and breathwork. About Adam: From humble beginnings on the river Trent in Stone, to the Olympic Games, Tokyo 2021. ‘Good person first, athlete second' is Adam's personal mantra which inspires his approach to training and life. His passion for canoe slalom relays an infectious energy to those who surround him. He is curious and loves learning. Adam believes his variety of interests helps to drive creativity. Drawing experience from one area of his life to another. He has a degree in Sports Science and Management from Nottingham Trent University. More recently Adam gained professional qualifications as a yoga teacher and speciality coffee brewer. To Adam, this Olympic campaign is about more than just the GOLD medal he aims for. This is about sharing this unique experience as he invites supporters on this journey with him. Find out more about Adam via his Instagram @slalom_burgess Big thanks to The Athlete Media Group who helped arrange our conversation and through whom you can work with Adam. Welcome to the first episode of series 3 of The Mojo Podcast This week I talk to Great Britain Para Table Tennis star Martin Perry. Born with no hands and one leg, Martin found a natural attraction to sport growing up with his three older brothers in Paisley, Scotland. He found his calling at aged 16, as he says, "table tennis seemed the obvious choice for a guy with no hands”. After being inspired by the events of London 2012, Martin has gone on to win over 50 international medals for Great Britain including two European Championship Gold's and winning the US Open. The two-time British National Champion has his eyes set on the Paralympic Games in Tokyo and beyond. Martin is a true radiator of positive energy and thinking, he's all about what is possible vs the apparently impossible. Indeed, he has a tattoo on his leg that says 'Disability' and the DIS is crossed out - this is his mantra. We talk about how this attitude has enabled him to play sport at the highest levels, as opposed to what his disability has prevented him from doing. Martin shares how is able to see the positive in tough life situations, challenging match scenarios and how he instinctively sees the positive in all people. His brand of positivity is both infectious and crucially, trainable, as for him positivity is a muscle you need to flex repeatably. Find out more about Martin via his website or Linked In page - where you'll see his own podcast - The PerryPOD Big thanks to The Athlete Media Group who helped arrange our conversation and through whom you can work with Martin. Martin mentions the Scottish charity Finding Your Feet in the podcast - please do support them if you can. A timely and poignant episode to end the second series of The Mojo Podcast. This week I'm joined by Nadine Asmar from her home in Beirut. Nadine is a resilient entrepreneur with an international experience of more than 20 years in business strategy and human capital development. She has led teams, launched brands and worked in volatile markets. She believes in the importance of rebalancing the relationship between society and business, purpose and profit, individual and organisation and rational and emotional in a bottom-line holistic approach as they all interweave with each other and are an integral part of each other. There is no separation. As the poet Rumi says “You are not a drop in the ocean, you are the ocean in a drop”. We talk about how Beirut is coping following the catastrophic explosion in August 2020, not to mention decades of civil war, economic strife and political corruption. Nadine has chosen to return to Beirut after years abroad and wants to be part of the long-term rebuilding, both there and in the region, via mentoring and support for fellow entrepreneurs. And she knows a thing or two about rebuilding, after having to rebuild her own life after a tragic event turned everything she knew upside down. It is a highly emotive story involving devastating loss and the choices she was forced to make. In all of this, Nadine has refused to wear the badge of the victim or accept this narrative as hers. And in that and her approach to a non-victim mindset, there is a lesson for us all - in this year especially. More about Nadine As a catalyst & enabler of impact Leaders, Nadine strives to build their capacity holistically to make positive changes for themselves, organization and society at large with a human centric approach. Once we have a positive impact on people and planet with an ethos to match, we guarantee a place for our organization in the future. As a lead facilitator for Mowgli Mentoring across the MENA and Sub-Saharan Africa for over 8 years, she co-create nurturing and safe environment for individuals to grow in self-awareness, feel supported and learn from the collective intelligence and shared experiences through their engagement in long term mentoring journey. She trains and coaches impact ventures on business modelling, scale up, innovation and investment readiness, leadership, cultural transformation, targeting youth, women, leaders and community-based organizations, implementing IES/INSEAD empowered programs. She has worked with numerous local, international organizations and academia, public institutions and local organizations. Nadine is a graduate in Socio-Anthropology and Master in Business Administration from AUB, Marketing focus from the American University of Dubai. She has been awarded the Soraya Salti Social Impact Scholarship for INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship program and she is certified as an Emotional Intelligence Assessor from Six Seconds, Effective Partnership Management from Maastricht school of Management and WeAre Squared UK Google Digital Marketing. What does it feel like to step up onto a stage in front of 50,000 people? What does it take to put your heart and soul into a song you've written and then wait for the reaction? And how do you truly understand what you're supposed to be in life? These are some of the areas we cover in this week's episode as I'm joined by singer/songwriter/music teacher Shean Williams. Shean has been involved in the music and entertainment industry for over twenty years. He grew up surrounded by music at his father's church, he was talent spotted at a very young age and went on to star in the West End at the age of 11. He has honed his craft in the UK but has also spent extensive time working in America whilst signed to Columbia records and working with the legendary soul artist Betty Wright's Miami Spice publishing company. Shean's mojo journey has seen him travel the world, yet always stay local through teaching and mentoring young performers. Whether he be teaching choirs locally, or on the road touring with Brit Award and Grammy nominated artist Craig David; the message stays the same, and intention true. “You're only ready to receive what you're truly willing to give.” You're going to enjoy hearing Shean's experience, you're going to find his wisdom fascinating and you're going to LOVE his pure passion and mojo throughout this. We had fun. Hope you love it too. This week on The Mojo Podcast my guest is Ben Branson the founder of Seedlip and Æcorn Drinks, the world's first distilled non-alcoholic spirits and aperitifs. Ben shares the ups and downs of his mojo journey from conceiving the idea for Seedlip in his kitchen and his first listing in Selfridges to where the brand is now. With offices in the Chilterns, Los Angeles and Sydney, Seedlip is now available in over 25x cities including New York, Barcelona, Shanghai & Singapore and served in many of the world's most awarded bars, restaurants and hotels including 350x Michelin * Restaurants & 9/10 of the world's best cocktail bars. Creating a new brand is tough enough but building a whole new category in food and drink is a whole other level of challenge. So, what made Ben do it? Belief and, in Ben's own words, being deluded about his chances. He simply refused to believe it couldn't be done. There's also another key element to Ben's drive and ambition... Ben describes Seedlip as a nature company that makes drinks and we delve into his love of nature and the natural world which forms the basis for what his has done, is doing and will do with Seedlip. As he says, no nature, no Seedlip. Meaning his recent meeting with Sir David Attenborough was even more important to him. You'll get a huge amount of insight into what it takes to build a business like Seedlip and what has helped and tested his mojo along the way. It's a revealing and inspiring conversation.
