I love talking to Laura Graves. She's articulate and thoughtful which makes for super answers and a great conversation and we're lucky to have another chat with her. Just to recap, Laura, burst onto the international dressage scene in 2014 at WEG in Normandy where she finished 5th in the Freestyle with her gelding Verdades. Two years later at the Rio Olympics they were part of the bronze medal winning US Team as well as just missing the podium to finish 4th individually. More recently she won silver in the Special at the WEG in Tryon as well as team silver. Laura was out in Australia earlier this year to give a brilliant Masterclass at Brisbane CDI. This interview touches a little bit on the themes she raised, so I'd really recommend that you read the Masterclass notes, the link to which are below. In this interview, Laura talks about US Dressage and what that actually means, the high scores we've been seeing recently in the dressage arena, the importance of experience, competitiveness, what exactly is rider fitness, the elusive half halt, the importance of having high expectations, how she likes to obtain her horses…….and fomo! Well what a weekend of sport is was as the indoor season in Europe concluded with the usual fanfare of the FEI World Cup Finals. Once more the show returned home to Gothenburg in Sweden for both dressage and jumping and yet again it generated a thrilling finale.  I doubt anyone will be surprised that the doyen of dressage Germany’s Isabell Werth was crowned champion for the third consecutive year, her fifth title or that the 14 year old mare Weihegold just keeps getting better when it matters the most.  But what’s always so exciting to watch is the sheer brilliance and panache of Isabell’s riding - she manages to pull out all the stops when the chips are down because she knows that the margin between her and the chasing pack is finite - she cannot afford a mistake. Right on her heals as expected was Laura Graves and the 17 year old gelding Verdades who scored 87.179% for his freestyle just 1.69% behind Isabell. Helen Langehanenberg ensured the Germans would have two places on the podium when her 17 year old stallion Damsey FRH achieved 86.571%.  Their Chef d’Equipe Monica Theodurescu would be well pleased with that result but probably no more so than Debbie McDonald when she saw the final results with Kasey Perry-Glass and Adrienne Lyle finishing in fifth and seventh place respectively. Three riders in the top seven at a World Cup Final bodes well for the Americans Olympic campaign although there is nothing to be complacent about with the quality of grand prix dressage between nations constantly improving. With the Pan Am Games this summer there will be everything to play for as riders plan their season with an eye on team selection.  The US for one has a growing band of combinations that will make selection very competitive when the trials come round. I caught up with Debbie just as she arrived home to get her reaction to the World Cup performances. Back in the US eventers heading to Kentucky at the end of the month had their final run at the Fork Horse Trials and Chatt Hills this weekend. And continuing our look at some of the first timers my guest this week is 24 year old Hallie Coon who rode her 12 year old Dutch mare Celien to fifth place in the CCI Four Star Short and she joins me now to tell us how this went in her final preparation for her Kentucky debut. Chris Stafford returns with news and interviews from around the world of equestrian sport by counting down to this year’s Land Rover Kentucky Three Day Event and featuring some of the first timers to the only 5 star competition in North America. The first guest is California based Frankie Thierot Stutes who had a bumper season last year with her 11 year old Oldenburg gelding Chatwin when they culminated by winning the FairHill three star event. I spoke to Frankie after her dressage at the Galway Downs International 4star short event last week which was the third outing of the year for the partnership as they prepare for the big event. Later in program we will hear from Katherine Bateson-Chandler who, together with the 14 year old Dutch gelding Alcazar, won the FEI four star Grand Prix Freestyle last week in week 12 of the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida scoring a personal best with her long time partner. The World Cup Dressage and Jumping Finals takes place this week in Gothenburg, Sweden and if you’ve been following the World Cup season it may seem that if Germany’s Isabell Werth is on form she will always be the one to beat and certainly with five World Cup titles to her name the doyen of dressage will be giving it all she has with Weihegold to make it a hat-trick of World Cup titles.  There are combinations who could deny her the title again including one of the US ladies and Laura Graves will know this is her best chance to add this to her career highlights with Verdades. Veteran show jumper Beezie Madden is also going for a hat-trick and will be under no illusion of the stiff competition the popular American rider faces if she is to bring it home again with Breitling. She has three other women joining her on the US contingent the 20 year old Eve Jobs and twenty-one year old Kelli Cruciotti (21) will be two of the youngest riders in action along with Georgina Bloomberg. American women have a great record at the World Cup Show Jumping Final. Melanie Smith won the title in 1983, Leslie Burr Lenehan in 1986) and Katharine Burdsall in 1987. The World Cup Finals mark the end of the indoor season so once the dust has settled in Gothenburg the focus will turn to the spring season of Nations Cups and selection for the Pan American Games which take place in Lima, Peru this summer and the European Championships. Both competitions are the last chance for nations to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. In this episode I interview the very funny US dressage star Laura Graves. Laura burst onto the international dressage scene in 2014 at WEG in Normandy where she finished 5th in the Freestyle with her gelding Verdades, who's she's had since he was a baby. Two years later at the Rio Olympics they were part of the bronze medal winning US Team as well as just missing the podium to finish 4th individually. More recently she won silver in the Special at the WEG in Tryon as well as team silver. In this interview, Laura talks about the difficulties of being at the top. Judges expectations and when you know your horse has given all he's got. She describes “Diddy" the “person” and her approach with the gelding's special personality, when situations don't always go to plan and being smart about your training. Laura gets her fitness work by chasing dogs, and she talks about Andy the US team's “voodoo” wielding physio. You'll hear what I mean! She describes a normal day at home, why coach Debbie McDonald is so good and what it's like being part of the US team; how she copes with social media….and all that time waiting around at the big shows plus learning from other riders. She also shares her thoughts on the sit trot. And the take way for me? The small things are the big things.
