Ever wanted to own a horse? Think all wild horses should just be left to roam free? If you had a horse of your own, how would your life change? We cover all these questions and more as I piece together 3 men's voices from The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo. This was one of my most creative podcasts because I had to do a lot of workarounds to improve the audio and create a seamless listening experience for my listeners that still conveys the essence of what is important in these conversations. Clearly, this is the tip of the iceberg, and it is my hope that this podcast will inspire you to go deeper in the adventure of animal ownership or whatever dream your heart really calls you, too. After all, we only get this one life from what I've heard! So let's make the most of it, and make the most of the beautiful animals we are blessed to call home with us. Thank you to all of our guests and their special stories, and to animal lovers everywhere,Here is an outline of who you will hear in this podcast and some links to learn more about each:Tim Resch, from Estes Park Outfitters, followed up with a short zoom call with me during spring break when I discovered that his audio was inaudible and used AI for the original to make it work. You get to hear his real voice in the first 20 minutes of the podcast, and the story everyone is talking about:"How he traded his wife for a horse!!"You won't want to miss this one in the first half of this episode. You can find out more about Tim and how to visit him on your horse adventures here:https://www.estesparkoutfitters.com/about-usAround the second half of the episode, we hear from Matt Manroe, Executive Director of Mustang Champions about his experience of working with and training mustang horses in multiple disciplines. When I first met Matt, I thought he said that he had 2 million mustangs placed in his program (I misheard him - he was talking about a grant, I believe). But we both laughed and also considered, creatively, what might be possible if we could get mustangs in to every school and the hearts of school children across the nation. It would not only change the trajectory of the wild horses, the range, and the schools, it would change the trajectory of all humanity. You will not want to miss hearing about the visionary competitions in The Kentucky Horse Park and Las Vegas Show Arenas that Matt has spearheaded. You can buy tickets, make donations and find out more here:https://mustangchampions.org/Finally, the third voice you hear, Kevin Lloyd, is a fellow Idaho-an who I'm looking forward to catching up with again at the Driggs rodeo this summer. His job is to capture, place and manage the wild horse herds in our state and region. He had a wealth of perspective and understanding of both the vision and the problems that we, as a nation, and mustangs, as a species, are facing. His passion for caring for the wild horses and leading them in to better lives, care and connections with humanity, especially youth, was beautiful to witness and hear about. If you want connect with Kevin or learn more about how to find the education, training and possibilites inherent in owning a mustang or wild horse, click the article below:https://mypubliclands.tumblr.com/post/128849059547/blm-idaho-engages-youth-with-wild-horsesSpecial thanks to Lisa Dierson who connected us to Julianne Neal (Camden, SC), of JA Media Productions, for the audio excerpt from her panel video for The Mustang SummJust says "buy the book on Amazon!"Support the showConnect with me in the following ways:catcaldwellmyers@gmail.comwww.catcaldwellmyers.com@catcaldwellmyers@adventureparadoxThe Adventure Paradox Podcast Page (Fb)

This episode has mentions of violence of dueling, listener's discretion is advised. Mariam sits down with Stuart Sanders to discuss his newest book, Anatomy of a Duel: Secession, Civil War, and the Evolution of Kentucky Violence. They talk about his role and artifacts at the Kentucky Historical Society, why dueling was so embraced in Kentucky (Henry Clay himself dueled more than once), and Stuart's previous and upcoming projects. Stuart is the Director of Research and Publications for the Kentucky Historical Society and has written four other books exploring interpersonal violence in the Civil War Era.Anatomy of a Duel: Secession, Civil War, and the Evolution of Kentucky Violence examines why white male Kentuckians engaged in the "honor culture" of duels and provides fascinating narratives that trace the lives of duelists. Stuart W. Sanders explores why, during a time when Americans were killing one another in open, brutal warfare, William T. Casto and Colonel Leonidas Metcalfe engaged in the process of negotiating and fighting a duel. The book is available for checkout at the Lexington Public Library and for purchase at your local bookstore.During the episode, Stuart mentions a memento ring from a duel that is available to view online. You can see it at the Kentucky Historical Society's online archive.

In this episode, Stacy shares insights from her recent experiences at two horse shows in Kentucky and answers a listener's question regarding preparing for a Freestyle reining class and showing bridleless. She attended a NRHA (National Reining Horse Association) show in Frankfort and the Liberty Festival at the Kentucky Horse Park, which was organized by the International Liberty Horse Association. Stacy observed that both experiences had similarities, emphasizing the importance of accuracy, exposure to different environments, and connecting with like-minded people. For the listener interested in Freestyle reining, Stacy recommends starting by participating in ILHA home shows and joining a local club. She advises practicing both reining and walk and trot transitions, emphasizing the transition to bridleless riding in various settings. Stacy offers valuable advice for transitioning to bridleless showing, suggesting that riders can commit to not using reins in regular shows to practice. Additionally, she encourages creating a local club to host liberty shows and facilitate an environment for training. Stacy's podcast provides a wealth of information and personal experiences to help horse enthusiasts understand, enjoy, and successfully train their horses while sharing insights from her own journey in the world of horse shows. Join us as this week Duane returns with an interview with Karen Kasper, world-renowned artist who may be most recently remembered for her recent sculpture of "Goldie" who has traveled throughout the country as an Arabian representative. Karen is far more than Goldie! She shares her experiences and introduction to the Arabian Horse - through pictures and art, and her later finally interacting with them in person. From there she took the leap into painting, where she she's leaned on her inspiration from classical artist renditions to help her specialize in detail, expression, and, for lack of a better word - their essence. It was suggested to her that, based on her style, she might excel at sculpting - and from her first cast it was clear that was true. Since then, Karen has had an incredible career as an equine artist and sculptor. Her work is the first contemporary sculpture of Arabians featured in the Al Marah Arabian Horse Galleries, where they are residing today. For this alone, a trip to the Kentucky Horse Park is certainly worth it. You can catch more examples at her website: www.karenkasper.com, and reach the artist at kkasper@karenkasper.com. To celebrate the paperback release of his autobiography Changing The Game – WUKY's Alan Lytle recently sat down with college sports marketing pioneer and WBKY alum Jim Host. Over the course of his multi-faceted career Jim was involved in state politics, working for Republican Governors Louie B. Nunn and Ernie Fletcher. Those political and business ties were put to good use in the construction of Rupp Arena, the Kentucky Horse Park and the KFC Yum! Center. In this in depth interview Jim talks about his use of bundling to secure lucrative sports marketing deals and makes a strong argument for tax reform in Kentucky and weighs in on the NCAA's new Name Image and Likeness policy for student athletes.
(Photo courtesy University Press of Kentucky) Now and then along comes a memoir that is about so much more than the person. “Changing the Game: My Career in Sports Marketing” chronicles not only the life, aspirations and entrepreneurial accomplishments of Jim Host, but also the origins or such Blue Grass icons as Rupp Arena and the Kentucky Horse Park. Host is credited with creating college sports marketing. But this man who says he “can't sleep fast enough” has also been a key player in Kentucky politics and government. We spend the hour with Jim Host. Hang on. It's quite a ride.
U.S. based Australian Eventer Ema Klugman started to turn heads this spring riding her seasoned partner Bendigo and making herself at home in her five-star debut where the pair finished 33rd. For the 23 year old to realize just one of her life ambitions with a horse she has had since she was 14 is the dream of many horse-mad girls. Her confidence and panache were evident as she galloped across the hallowed turf of the Kentucky Horse Park in an unusual year for sport. There were no crowds to cheer her on but the online audience was taking note. Her coach Marilyn Little gave her stride by stride instructions and she never wavered from her task. It seems Ema is now hooked and riding five-star events is her overall goal. But there is more to life for the Maryland based rider who this fall starts law school and faces a new challenge of combining both careers. And outside of those two exacting professions, Ema is in demand as a coach too. Oh and did I mention that she's a classical pianist‽ Whatever happens I think it's safe to say Ema has plenty of options for a bright future. We caught up with her at home in Maryland to get her reaction to the spring season and hear what her plans are for the fall season. It's been said by many that every place has a story to tell. And in this episode of Roadtreking the RV Podcast we learn that many of the most interesting places also have a festival or special event to celebrate their stories. Just about every weekend, somewhere in North America, there's a small town festival celebrating something. And finding those festivals - be they music, food or event-centered - is just one of several topics we tackle this week in Episode 59. We interview the author of a great book that belongs in every RV, a book that helps you find hundreds of small town festivals and events that let you not only have fun but experience great food and learn about interesting people and places far off the interstates. We have some traveling tech tips, a bucket list destination of the week for you to explore and, of course, lots of RV news, tips and trends. [spp-player] Here are the complete shownotes for Episode 59 of Roadtreking the RV Podcast: Mike and Jennifer's Whereabouts As this episode begins, we find the Wendlands in Southwest Georgia, after a leisurely RV trip that took them to a Halloween celebration campout in Kentucky and a great fall color tour in Tennessee and North Dakota. Listen carefully and - between the lines - Mike shares how they find free places to overnight when traveling from place to place, besides the old favorites like Walmart and Cracker Barrel. He doesn't want to name names and spoil a good thing but, if you have a small motorhome that doesn't scream "RV!!!!," Mike suggests lots of other places. JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK: Star Shower Laser Light Projector We got this idea from visiting the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky last week. It's a way to decorate your RV…or your full sticks and bricks house for that matter – with literally thousands, of beautifully colored sparkling lights. This is what the Star Shower looks like when projected on an RV They're billed as Christmas lights, but we saw folks down in Kentucky who were using them as Halloween decorations. They're called the Star Shower and they really aren't lights in the traditional sense at all. You don't have to hang string after string of lights. Not even a single sting. The Star Shower is a laser light projection system. They cover 600 square feet and utilize a tiny projector to shine all over your RV. This is so cool. The Star Shower laser light allows you to display thousands of green stars, or a green and red star combination. You can select whatever display you want. The company says one set will cover the typical single story house. Now the folks we saw using this had two Star Shower Projectors going and it perfectly covered their entire 32-foot-long Fifth Wheel, plus a size-able part of the ground around. The display is very bright and we thought they were real lights until we got right next to the RV. They require a 110-volt electric system to work, either from your RV or from the shore power electric box outside the rig. They are available all over the place, at many big box and hardware stores or directly from Amazon at (http://amzn.to/1Xu7b0c) $39. These are a lot of fun. We might use one at our home this holiday season…besides the RV. [spp-player] LISTENER QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK: Finding the right RV, understanding lithium batteries, finding RV park reviews From listener Dolores came a question about finding an RV she saw a video on some time back: Q: ..it was electric, had solar panels pre-installed on the roof, and you could run all of the systems from a tablet! They advertised leaving the rig and wanting to turn the lights back on or check the dog (there was an inside camera). The table piece really intrigued me along with the camera. I travel for a military contractor 3-6 months at a time and rather than hotels I'd like to have an RV so no matter where I am (meaning parked on post or at an armory) my home is outside and I can keep an eye on Yogi (my rescued dog).
