OK, “Gentle Listeners,” Dr. Walking Dead has shown up for work for us with this week's special double-feature show. In this 49th Edition of DEAD MAN STILL WALKING, your intrepid professor, Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop, graciously took at least one cinematic bullet for the listeners, metaphorically speaking… The two movies that Dr. Bishop examines during this episode include the 1970s odd couple of double features, I Drink Your Blood (1971) and I Eat Your Skin (1971) — the latter, a G-rated, black-and-white movie that was actually produced in 1964. Dr. Bishop brings his usual astute analysis to these proceedings, informing us of actual onscreen murder of an animal, and therefore, which instance(s) of blood in the film is real blood. And speaking of blood, we learn about meat pies being injected with infected, rabid dog blood, thereby constituting a very early example of “the infected zombie” narrative. And Kyle even goes so far as to tell us about a Horror movie where the evil characters “treat people poorly.” And that's only his notes on the first film! Wait until you hear what he has to say about the second! Join us! Note: To view ALL of Dr. Bishop's Dead Man Still Walking solocast episodes can USE THIS LINK. Hey Zombie fans! Here in the 48th Edition of DEAD MAN STILL WALKING, your intrepid professor, Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop, reviews a new, zombie Horror whose title is often inexplicably styled as “MadS” (2024) around the internet, so we will perpetuate the arbitrary capitalization, as well — just like … zombies. “MadS” is written and directed by David Moreau that is ambitiously and meticulously depicted in Real Time because it was shot all in one take! Impressive! Dr. Bishop says it's “shot like an 89-minute play.” Join us to hear what he thinks! Note: To view ALL of Dr. Bishop's Dead Man Still Walking solocast episodes can USE THIS LINK. Our feature film for this episode has been adapted from the novel, “Handling the Undead,” written by John Ajvide Lindqvist, also the author of the novel, “Let the Right One In.” And what we have here is a Swedish novel that has been converted into a Norwegian film, also titled Handling the Undead (2024). At the helm is a 35-year-old female director, Thea Hvistendahl. As noted above, Dr. Bishop explains why this movie isn't as much of a Horror film as it is a Zombie Drama! Here in Episode 048 (the 14th Edition of DEAD MAN STILL WALKING), your intrepid host, Dr. Kyle William Bishop, brings you his Retrospective of “The Walking Dead” — an 11 season TV series about zombies! Dr. Walking Dead discusses his mid-series hiatus and his reasons for taking a break from watching. Kyle also explains his reticence for finishing the entire series. Then Dr. Walking Dead moves into his brief sentiments as he looks back over all 11 seasons. Dr. Bishop gives an interesting insight about actors and why the TV series adaptation varied from events in the comic. And due to the difference in the cinematic adaptation, for those who read the comics, watching “The Walking Dead” TV series is an opportunity to enjoy this property again. However, Kyle notes that fans of the comic anticipate certain story arcs that may not play out as expected. Cahn zombie double feature of Zombies of Mora Tau (1957) and Invisible Invaders (1959), a short film. One of these films Dr. Bishop deems a legit zombie flick and the other he calls “zombie-like.” But both are important to the history of zombie cinema because one film may contain the first use of the phrase “The Walking Dead,” as well as what might be the first screen appearance of the aquatic zombie. The other film was most likely used by George Romero as a visual reference for the way zombies move. Dr. Bishop answers his “Is it a zombie?” question for both films, and he also makes an important distinction about the Deadites from “The Evil Dead.” Don't miss it! Movement is life! Welcome to the Third Edition of DEAD MAN STILL WALKING, where Dr. Walking Dead dares you to explore the depths of depravity found in this year's notorious zombie flick, The Sadness (2022), a new Horror film from Taiwan written and directed by Rob Jabbaz. Dr. Bishop addresses the gore and violence and whether it is excessively or unnecessarily gratuitous. He describes how this new film fits into both 20th century and 21st century zombie narratives. Is “The Sadness” also a Romance? Is it an “Anti-Romance”? Is this film original or derivative? What other zombie narratives, if any, serve as influences? Kyle Bishop answers these questions and discusses the distinctions between “gluttonous zombies” and “wrath zombies” / “lust zombies.” In the beginning of his review, Dr. Bishop discusses some very mild, premise-based “spoilers.” But after providing a spoiler warning, he eventually covers full-blown spoilers for “The Sadness.” Listen! Mr. Lee Norment is in his 14th year at Maclay School and is the English Department Chair in our Upper School. Mr. Norment is a student and alumni favorite and took over the leadership of a strong English and Literature Department years ago and has only led it to greater heights. His leadership of collaboration and helping students find their voices as writers is an excellent example of how we teach our students to become uncommonly good writers. Key thoughts: Writing as a process – generating ideas, drafting, revising with the notion you will never write the perfect essay, but it is worth the effort. Similar to other disciplines, the only way to get better at writing is to write... a lot! As teachers, we focus on valuable feedback and helping our students find their voice. Understanding your own writing process is the most important lesson to learn. Mr. Norment discusses how we try to get our students to look beyond the grade to the feedback. This way, we are able to help them grow as writers and learn how we set a tone of determination to achieve a level of writing that allows our students to outperform peers once they take the next step to college. Elizabeth is now a consultant and speaker, and currently working on a book for teachers and administrators about creating curriculums. Liz has also served as Principal, Vice Principal, and English Department Chair at New Britain High School. Under Liz’s guidance, New Britain saw a 100% increase in students taking advanced placement English Language, and a 30% increase in students scored as proficient on CCSS R1, R2, R4 and W1. As a teacher writer, a teacher of writing, and a teacher of writing teachers, Liz pulls from her deep experience to share some incredible wisdom. Liz speaks to the import of individualizing both instruction and expectations for every single student, as the most important teaching method. She also speaks to the importance of using mentor texts to guide writing instruction for both teachers and students. Feedback is key for Liz, both in her own work, and in her teaching. She shares why feedback should be given in a timely matter, always before an assignment is finished, but not in an overwhelming amount, and focusing on ideas and questions first, structure and grammer last. She clarified the key differences between revising, editing, and proofreading and why they should not be attempted all together. Be on the lookout for Liz’s upcoming book, and learn more about her work in the New Britain school system in our case study! *********************************************************************** Join the Writable community: ∙ Twitter: twitter.com/getwritable ∙ Facebook: www.facebook.com/getwritable ∙ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/writ... ∙ Instagram: www.instagram.com/getwritable ∙ Pinterest: www.pinterest.com/getwritable ∙ Medium: medium.com/writable
