He's a contemporary of Theroux, Chatwin, early Dalrymple and inspiration for the newer generation of his genre, the likes of Rory Stewart, Levison Wood and many, many more. Colin has been a dream guest of mine for many years. This interview travelled a line across the map of his career. Colin reflects on his many experiences in Russia and China, the impact of historical events like the Cultural Revolution, the collapse of the Soviet Union - and the broader evolution of travel writing throughout the years. He gets into the effects of globalisation on cultural identities and how it's effected his experience over the decades. Colin observes the complexities of nationalism and patriotism, and as well discusses the role religion in his life, the nature of belief, and the rationality behind it all. Colin then comments on mortality and his legacy which leads to a discussion on how travel can serve as a coping mechanism for grief. Plus, together we also touch on the choices and more difficult trade offs surrounding parenthood and career, his aspirations for future literary projects, and the influence of serendipity behind it all. I can see from the analytics that not even 20% of you who are listening are following the show, I wish this to be 100! In this episode, we welcome back a friend of the podcast, Jonathan Chatwin, to discuss his new book, The Southern Tour: Deng Xiaoping and the Fight for China's Future. Since the Emperor Kangxi made his southern tour in 1684, many emperors and Chinese leaders have undertaken similar inspection tours, including Mao, Deng, and Xi Jinping. Deng's southern tour took place in the backdrop of contentious debates about his radical restructuring of the economy in the Reform era. Jonathan describes how Deng used the tour to reinvigorate his market reforms amidst the turmoil after 1989 and the difficulties with squaring the tenets of socialism with the new agenda of wealth creation. Our conversation also covers Deng's legacy, Xi Jinping's attempt to downplay Deng's role in the historic reforms, and the obstacles of publishing a China book in the current Sino-skeptic environment. Publisher's link for The Southern Tour: Deng Xiaoping and the Fight for China's FutureOur previous episode with Dr. Chatwin discussed his book, Long Peace Street: A Walk in Modern ChinaDeng-zilla Poster! from Chineseposters.net

The journey of a rock star is a “…long and winding road…” and Curt has traveled to the end and back. However, with every journey there is a crossroad where one needs to choose which way to go, in Curt's case it was the choice of continuing the journey or pulling off and being a family man…in this caae it was an easy choice. He relives his journey with us and tells us how he got his start, the different bands he had the pleasure of playing with, the different venues he played (from all the clubs in Hollywood, to Lalapalooza, and touring with Joe Walsh). Chad was in his comfort zone when it came to music and he and Curt reminisce about years past and the different musicians, friends and bands; it was fun to listen to both of them go back and fourth about it all. We, know “Chaddy" as the family man “Curt" who is an all around humble genuine human, loving father to Bailey and Coby and loving husband to his wonderful wife April. Curt talks about the tail end of his touring days and his peek behind the proverbial curtain, while traveling with Joe Walsh, and how the decision to step off the tour bus to be there for his family was an easy one. With his kids grown Curt journey is continuing on and the band is back together. The ambitions to get signed are a thing of the past, now he and his band mates are all there for the fun of it…I look forward to the reunion show!! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drinkinthinkin/message
