Joseph Picard was a teenager when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Unlike some of his peers, Picard was neither excited to join the service nor dreading it. He just accepted that he would need to serve. After completing basic training, Picard was assigned to the 552nd Field Artillery Battalion, working with the massive 240mm guns. The battalion was held out of D-Day operations and landed at Utah Beach in late June 1944.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Picard takes us through all the work involved in assembling and operating the 240mm guns. He also walks us from Utah Beach through the Battle for St. Lo and the Allied drive to Paris.Picard also describes the devastating combat at the Battle of Aachen, losing his best friend in combat, and the chaos and bitter cold at the Battle of the Bulge.

This week on Better Buildings for Humans, Joe Menchefski is joined by biophilic design expert and architect Helena van Vliet for an eye-opening conversation that redefines what it means to design for well-being. Helena shares her deeply personal path from Bauhaus boxes to “buildings as habitat,” and explains how chronic stress, poor air, and flat architecture are failing our health. You'll learn why edge conditions matter, how buildings impact your immune system, and how evolutionary biology proves we need daily awe to thrive. From her pioneering teaching methods to her new book Towards a Nature Positive Built Environment, Helena makes a compelling case for buildings that bloom—and why public health depends on them. If you think natural light and green walls are just nice-to-haves… think again.More About Helena van VlietBorn and raised in Aachen, Germany, in a family of architects and builders, Helena made her way to the US at the age of 20 and eventually found her home in Pennsylvania. She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science (Vordiplom) in Architecture from the RWTH Aachen, Germany. Helena is the mother of two precious young adults and a licensed architect in the U.S. as well as in Germany. Sultry low-end grooves from a rising house enchantress. "What kind of music do I actually want to play?" Every artist asks themselves this at some point in their career. What is a sound? And why do we personally identify with it? For Lea Lang, AKA dj sweet6teen, this question is the guiding force behind her RA Mix. Born in Aachen, a German spa city close to the border with Belgium, Lang found her musical feet in the vibrant student hub of Cologne. It was while studying social work at the Technische Hochschule that she fell into the nightlife scene. Finding her sound wasn't an instant process. Lang cut her teeth on breaks-heavy house and prog (think Angel D'Lite), traces of which you can hear peppered across RA.1004. But as she explains in this week's Q&A, the pandemic years were, musically, a turning point. "High BPMs and short-lived trends became very dominant and I realised I couldn't stand the pace anymore," she writes. "That's when my sound naturally shifted into something more minimalist and timeless." Nowadays, you'll find Lang in Berlin during the week, and on weekends… well, take your pick. A busy touring schedule means she's on the road almost constantly —this summer she's debuted at Horst Arts & Music, Butik, Dimensions and Panorama Bar (to name just a few). And her RA Mix? It oozes charm from the jump. Buoyant with gyrating low-end, it's hard to think her sound was ever anything else: vocals twirl around analogue basslines, material à la Eddie Richards and Terry Francis's historic Wiggle parties, as well as the kind of bongo action that wouldn't feel out of place in an Apollonia session. Call it waft, wiggle, smooch house—whatever it is, we like it. @djsweet6teen Find the tracklist and interview at https://ra.co/podcast/1022

Liga? Podwart hören!

Eliot and Eric welcome John Spencer, Chair of Urban Warfare Studies with the Madison Policy Forum and Co-Director of the Urban Warfare Project and author of numerous articles and studies of urban and subterranean warfare. They discuss the unique characteristics of urban warfare, the traditional U.S. military approach to urban warfare as well as historical examples from the U.S.-Mexican War in the 19th Century to more recent examples like the Battle of Aachen in World War II and the Battles of Baghdad, Fallujah, and Sadr City during the Iraq War. Based on Spencer's multiple trips to Israel and Gaza, they also discuss how the Israeli Defense Forces have attempted to deal with the even more difficult urban warfare conditions in Gaza including the more than 400 miles of tunnels that created enormously complicated problems for Israeli forces attempting to destroy Hamas's 24 battalions of some 30 to 40 thousand fighters and the inevitable impact that has on civilian populations. They also discuss the information or cognitive warfare dimension of fighting on urban terrain and the difficulties Israel has had in that regard. Shield of the Republic is a Bulwark podcast co-sponsored by the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.

*** Moderation: Rudi Cerne, Conny Neumeyer Gäste und Experten: EKHK Michael Fritsch-Hörmann; HK Uwe Döpking Autorin: Carolin Rückl Audioproduktion & Technik: Lalita Hillgärtner, Sebastian Muxeneder Produktionsleitung Securitel: Marion Biefeld Produktionsleitung Bumm Film: Melanie Graf, Nina Kuhn Produktionsmanagement ZDF: Julian Best Leitung Digitale Redaktion Securitel: Nicola Haenisch-Korus Produzent Securitel: René Carl  Produzent Bumm Film: Nico Krappweis  Redaktion Securitel: Katharina Jakob, Corinna Prinz Redaktion ZDF: Sonja Roy, Kirsten Zielonka Regie Bumm Film: Alexa Waschkau
