Join the Wargames To Go (and Boardgames To Go) discord server https://discord.gg/vxEG9bMPdx I'm taking the win. For a while now I've been wishing I could do these episodes more often, study more topics, play more wargames, read more books, see more movies… This time, it worked. I didn't play that many games, but I played a few while digging into a new topic: the American entry into WW2's ETO through Operation Torch. The combined American-British amphibious invasion of the western half of North Africa was something I knew a little about, but—as always happens with me—I learn a lot more through this experience. I learn some more details about what happened, and a lot more context. That's the part of history that I find most fascinating. In this case, the wider context had a lot to do with Vichy France and its colonies. The formation of this new, odd government, who was responsible, how it operated, and America's complicated, troublesome relationship to it. One book really brought that home, but it showed up in everything, including podcasts, movies, and the games themselves (at least somewhat). Films • Patton • The Big Red One • Casablanca Books • When France Fell (Neiberg) • Patton: A Biography (Axelrod) • An Army at Dawn (Atkinson) • No Ordinary Time (Goodwin) Travel No, I didn't make it to Morocco, Algeria, or Tunisia to see this places in-person. That would be amazing. I'd love to see the Atlas Mountains and sunset from there that Churchill insisted that FDR see during their famous conference. The closest I've come is getting to see the US Army Desert Training Center that Patton himself picked out from his knowledge of the American Southwest, and trained troops that would later be part of Operation Torch. To be honest, it's now a pretty run-down place. Clearly the modern army trains elsewhere. Yet it's still an interesting part of history, and what wargamer doesn't enjoy seeing some tired, old tanks? -Mark Charlemagne will be my next topic. I'm not sure how many games there are about him and this period, but it ties in to my trip to Aachen, I'd like to learn more, and want to take a break from WW2. Here's a geeklist with my preliminary ideas about it.

Was macht also Hoffnung auf Besserung?

Hello friends of the History of the Germans. Great news, the tour is on!We have set up a website where you can sign up. I have put a link in the show notes, as well as on my website History of the Germans in the Travel, maps and Books section. Sign up here: History of the Germans Podcast Tour - BikePlanetWe will be travelling on the passenger ship Iris, a converted classic Rhine barge. Travelling by boat is - unsurprisingly - one of my favourite ways to see the world. We do not have to get in and out of hotels, we have breakfast and dinner in spectacular scenery and can see the sights as most travellers did before the invention of the motorcar. Note that Iris has capacity for only 25 passengers in double cabins, so speed is of the essence.... Should there be more demand than we can fulfil, we will give priority to patrons. So what are we going to do? Subject to the usual caveats, we are planning to meet in Aschaffenburg near Frankfurt and then travel along the Main and Rhine rivers via Frankfurt, Mainz, Eltville, Braubach, Koblenz, Andernach, Remagen to Cologne with a trip up to Aachen. The tour will end in Düsseldorf.

Unrushed and enjoying life slowly in Berlin since 2016. U N R U S H is an experiment in sound and ambience, created to facilitate moments where you can find calm in your mind, when the world can encourage you to fast forward, blink and miss some of the beauty. Atmosphere through audio can help us reduce stress, stimulate ideas and creativity or just relax and soak in what's around us. The label and podcast series is applauded by artists across corners of the electronic music scene, and their contributions are an insight to the music we all need, when we aren't living life in the fast lane. Where we can find inner peace, clarity and embrace reflection. Unrush maintains such a nice, measured pace that they continue to release on tape, a taste of the 80s. This physical medium captures a point in time, yet still holds a vital place today and in the future. This December sees their 6th overall release and their third on the tape format with 7 tracks: The Unrush Tapes 03 with Chie Otomi / Daniel[i] & Lukas Freisem. In Aachen, Germany, Daniel[i] and Lukas Freisem have long been musical comrades, but this release on Unrush is their first official collaboration, in addition to being Lukas Freisem's debut release. Daniel[i] is a name we love to see on any lineup or upcoming release, thanks to his work on Mojuba, Muzan Editions, and his own platform, Whispering Signals. Over the weekend, my music partner, Jake (Passaat), and I opened with his track 'En Trance' at a Pintai event in London — another example of the ambient brilliance in Daniel[i]'s locker, warming the room exactly the way we intended. I first discovered Lukas Freisem's talent at La Nature Festival in 2024, where his all-vinyl morning set—delivered with impeccable class, elegance, and a warm smile and sway — absolutely blew me away, top vibe. Finding out he was a mind and digger behind the operations at Tam Tam Records in Aachen solidified it: an incredible DJ, and now I can now say he is also an incredible producer, too. Crackles, distortion. It feels timeless. Their sound flirts with rhythm, it wants to get going, but instead, it remains patient, a solid foundation. Above this foundation, layers of ebb and flow. These ebbs and flows come as long, inhaled pauses, hazy chords, and a gentle expansion and retraction, like soft breathing. It's on Unrush, you get the picture, it's gentle and facilitates the perfect focus for any time of day. ‘The Unrush Tapes 03' is released digitally & on cassette on December 5th. @danieli_whs @lukas-freisem @unrushme www.instagram.com/danieldanieli_/ www.instagram.com/lukasfreisem/ www.instagram.com/_unrush_/ Write up by @danpeplow Follow us on social media: @itsdelayed linktr.ee/delayed www.delayed.nyc www.facebook.com/itsdelayed www.instagram.com/_____delayed www.youtube.com/@_____delayed Contact us: info@delayed.nyc

By the autumn of 1944, the Allies had driven across France and Belgium and reached the borders of Germany. Ahead of them lay the Rhine — a vast natural barrier and the last line of defence protecting the heart of the Reich. What followed was some of the most intense and costly fighting of the war in Western Europe. From the bitter battles around Aachen and the Hürtgen Forest, through the crossing operations of Plunder and Varsity, to the dramatic capture of the bridge at Remagen, the campaign for the Rhineland was brutal, chaotic, and often overshadowed by the more famous Battle of the Bulge. Yet it was here, on both sides of the Rhine, that the final collapse of Nazi Germany truly began. To help tell that story, I'm joined by military historian Anthony Tucker-Jones, author of Rhineland, which charts the campaign from the German border battles of late 1944 through to the end of the war in 1945. In THE HAT DIARIES: Escape From the Adventure, Nadine Haruni culminates her action-packed trilogy with a story reflecting the power of friendship and the interconnectedness of family across generations. Book three opens with Ryan and Shadow in Aachen, Germany, on October 13, 1944. Despite repeated warnings from Merlo, Ryan made the terrible mistake of overstaying the 60-minute timeframe allotted to complete each Adventure. Right after Violet stepped through the Portal to return home, he dropped his diary, a precious written record of all his Adventures. He thought he'd have enough time to grab it before the countdown timer shrieked. Instead, as he picked up his diary, Ryan watched in horror as the massive red Portal door shut, leaving him stranded amidst the turmoil and danger of battle during World War II.     THE HAT DIARIES: Escape From the Adventure is told from the perspective of three different narrators: Ryan, Merlo, and Violet. As the tension mounts, the story reveals a secret Merlo has been carrying for most of his adult life, one that is weighed down by guilt. As Sergeant Hank and Ryan set out on a journey fraught with danger, navigating through war-torn landscapes, Escape From the Adventure raises intriguing questions: Is it possible to prevent a tragic event from happening again? And if the course of history can be altered, at what cost?                  Through it all, readers will continue to root for Ryan Rigbee, a relatable and remarkable teen. While THE HAT DIARIES: Escape From the Adventure marks the end of the trilogy, Ryan and his magical Adventures will live on.   Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Author and researcher D. H. Morris reveals the gripping true story behind her historical novel The Girl of Many Crowns, following Princess Judith of Francia and Baldwin “Iron Arm.” We dig into how Deborah turned medieval annals, songs, and court records into a vivid, faith-infused saga of love, power, and defiance—plus the surprising family link that started it all. If you love stories where history breathes and the stakes are royal, this one's for you. Sponsored byDaniel McGhee & the Victory Team Guest Bio:  D. H. (Deborah) Morris is a playwright, world traveler, and historical-fiction author whose research spans medieval Latin sources and English scholarship. After tracing her own genealogy, she uncovered the real saga of Princess Judith of Francia and Baldwin Iron Arm, inspiring her debut novel The Girl of Many Crowns. A former theater professional and devoted researcher, Morris blends scholarly rigor with dramatic storytelling—and donates a portion of her book's proceeds to anti-trafficking efforts.  Main Topics: ·         How a genealogy puzzle led Deborah to Princess Judith & Baldwin Iron Arm. ·         Turning dense medieval sources into living scenes (annals, riddles, liturgy, songs). ·         Historical fiction vs. strict history: staying faithful while filling the gaps. ·         Judith's early marriages, agency, and defiance in a world of kings and councils. ·         Vikings, ransoms, and realpolitik: how raids, slavery, and silver shaped the plot. ·         Writing the audiobook herself—acting craft, character voice, and production. ·         Prequel in progress: Empress Judith, Charlemagne's court, and civil war stakes. ·         Why she donates proceeds to OUR/Operation Underground Railroad.  Resources mentioned: ·         The Girl of Many Crowns novel·         Princess Judith of Francia; Baldwin (Iron Arm); Alfred the Great; Charlemagne; Louis the Pious; Hincmar of Reims; Aachen. ·         Annals of St. Bertin Send us a textThe Victory TeamLOOKING TO BUY OR SELL A HOME Go with the Agent that was voted Harford's Best & won the Harford CouDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Sultry low-end grooves from a rising house enchantress. "What kind of music do I actually want to play?" Every artist asks themselves this at some point in their career. What is a sound? And why do we personally identify with it? For Lea Lang, AKA dj sweet6teen, this question is the guiding force behind her RA Mix. Born in Aachen, a German spa city close to the border with Belgium, Lang found her musical feet in the vibrant student hub of Cologne. It was while studying social work at the Technische Hochschule that she fell into the nightlife scene. Finding her sound wasn't an instant process. Lang cut her teeth on breaks-heavy house and prog (think Angel D'Lite), traces of which you can hear peppered across RA.1004. But as she explains in this week's Q&A, the pandemic years were, musically, a turning point. "High BPMs and short-lived trends became very dominant and I realised I couldn't stand the pace anymore," she writes. "That's when my sound naturally shifted into something more minimalist and timeless." Nowadays, you'll find Lang in Berlin during the week, and on weekends… well, take your pick. A busy touring schedule means she's on the road almost constantly —this summer she's debuted at Horst Arts & Music, Butik, Dimensions and Panorama Bar (to name just a few). And her RA Mix? It oozes charm from the jump. Buoyant with gyrating low-end, it's hard to think her sound was ever anything else: vocals twirl around analogue basslines, material à la Eddie Richards and Terry Francis's historic Wiggle parties, as well as the kind of bongo action that wouldn't feel out of place in an Apollonia session. Call it waft, wiggle, smooch house—whatever it is, we like it. @djsweet6teen Find the tracklist and interview at https://ra.co/podcast/1022
