In this episode of The Grassroots Show on the EquiRatings Eventing Podcast, Sam Watson returns to the mic to join Nicole Brown for a brilliantly practical and mindset-focused deep dive into four of the most common mistakes riders make across all three phases of eventing. From the traps of trying too hard to misunderstanding the true role of rider responsibility, Sam shares hard-earned wisdom, hilarious analogies, and honest advice you can apply at any level. Whether you're trotting down the centreline or tackling a big cross-country track, this one is packed with insight. Episode Highlights: Why "trying harder" isn't the answer: Success often comes from calm, consistent, simple habits — not more effort in the saddle. Dressage: Focus on the process, not the shape: The "one-handed riding rule", the myth of being on the bit, and the trap of chasing outcomes. Show Jumping: Control what you can: You can't control your eye for a stride — but you can control speed, rhythm, softness, and the setup. Cross Country: Stay in your lane: Riders have four jobs: straightness, speed, softness, and staying on. The rest is up to the horse. Loose jumping, roast dinners, and emotional chaos: Sam makes it relatable with real-life parallels — including why preparing a Sunday roast has a lot in common with a successful eventing round. Guest Info: Sam Watson: Irish international event rider, EquiRatings co-founder, and long-time 'friend' of the podcast. Presented by Foran Equine, part of the Connolly's RED MILLS family. By her mid-teens, Sally had completed her first one-star three-day event, and at just 20 years old, she traveled to England to compete at the prestigious Badminton Horse Trials. She remained in the UK that year and went on to complete the Burghley Horse Trials later that season. In addition to her riding career, Sally spent 16 years working as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch before deciding to turn professional and commit fully to eventing. Today, she operates Sally Cousins Eventing, training horses and riders out of her bases in South Carolina and Pennsylvania. In this episode, Sally reflects on the choices and philosophies that have shaped her decades-long career in eventing, including: • How being strategic about which events she entered helped her horses stay sound and competitive for longer. • Why she's never hesitated to withdraw a horse at the last minute if they weren't ready, prioritizing their well-being over competition goals. • What led her to leave a successful 16-year career as a stockbroker to pursue horses full-time. • The importance of building a trusting relationship with each horse and following her gut when deciding whether to push forward or hold back. I'm sure you will enjoy hearing Tiffany's approach to teaching and connecting with her students.Bio:Tiffany Andrews (Dressage, Eventing, H/J) grew up riding in lesson barns and started her competition career at age 13. She spends her days teaching a wide variety of students, many whom have come to her with problem and project horses, or have confidence issues in the saddle and on the ground. Tiffany believes in building confidence in both horse and rider to help make their goals a reality. Tiffany offers full and partial training, lessons, clinics, and coaching at shows. She specializes in eventing and dressage but also has a strong background in hunters/jumpers and equitation. Over the years she's shown her main horse Crown Royal, whom she brought along herself, in the 3'6" hunters, the meter jumpers, training level eventing, and up through 3rd level dressage. Along with teaching riders and training client or program horses, Tiffany also is working to bring along her 4 year old OTTB, Frozen, with plans for her to be her next upper level competition horse. For more info, kindly visit: morningsidestables.horse~~~~~~~~~~Thanks so much for listening!  Please write a review if you're inspired!
