New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:27) Did you see the Ballad and Daagger cover reveal? Kristen gives us her live reaction! Plus, we got the first chapter, and it's all very exciting The finals for the Goodreads Choice Awards is here. Who made it to the last round? This is out 10th episode! Not bad. Not bad. It's farther than some of our other podcasts made it. We've gotta give you some shameless self-promotion every once in a while! Percy Jackson Holiday Gift Guide (00:08:53) Welcome to our Percy Jackson holiday gift guide! We picked out a few items that you can put on your wishlist or give to your friends and family. Becky also read our minds and offered up some suggestions, which we've linked here, too. First up is the Litographs shop, which makes for such great merch. Plus the official Lightning Thief Musical book. Don't worry, Kristen has read more than just two books in her life. The Lightning Thief Musical shop seems to be temporarily closed, so keep an eye on it. Then there's John Rocco's Etsy shop, which is open again. Then, Kristen gives us all her great ideas for Percy Jackson gifts. How about these amazing Percy Jackson enamel pins? And you can show off your love of Heroes of Olympus with this necklace. And we couldn't forget Apollo, could we? Both Karen and Kristen are obsessed with this Greek mythology foil art. And these really unique Delphi Strawberry Farms glasses. Now it's time for Karen's suggestions! Who wouldn't want shoe wings!? She also suggested a cool Camp Half-Blood necklace. Plus, these neat Percy Jackson stickers. It's important to know you're sending your money to the original artists! Everyone needs a bookmark, right? Oh, and don't forget about this gorgeous Percy Jackson soap. Chapter Reviews (00:42:08) Guys, we're so close to the end of the Lightning Thief! First up is chapter 19. A lot happens in this chapter! The Underworld is a pretty interesting place. And Tartarus is SUPER creepy. Karen has some strong feelings about Hades. Thank goodness Sally is alive. Oh yeah, that's what those pearls were for. Reminder: Percy. Is. TWELVE. Time for Chapter 20! This chapter wasn't as crazy but some stuff still goes down. Percy is a smart cookie. But Ares is still a scary dude. How did Percy possibly beat him? The description of what ADHD feels like is so perfect. How will this final scene be depicted in the show? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 11, in which we'll discuss the The Lightning Thief Musical. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Meredith and Kaytee are happily chatting this week about the books we’ve been reading and the bookish gifts we have been buying or want to buy! Important announcement this week: we have a great discount code to share with you from The Bookshelf Thomasville! Now through June 30th, you can get anything on their website for 10% off using the code CURRENTLYREADING (wow!!!) This would be a great time to pick up a Shelf Subscription for yourself or others! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a “there’s a book for every reader” realization and a well-curated bookish shopping trip. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. There are some seriously strong opinions about the books we’ve been reading lately. Lots of punching, for some reason! For our deep dive this week, we are shopping for the book lovers in our lives and have each decided to tackle different types of readers. We are hopeful that this will help you in your own gift-giving endeavors! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. This week we are talking about a YA novel full of sweetness and fun emails, and a regency mystery series that ended too soon. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Startup Boston Podcast: Entrepreneurs | Investors | Influencers | Founders
After attending Princeton, Sean Grundy worked in the environmental business before going to business school. It was after business school when he started Bevi, whose goal is to eliminate plastic bottles. Sean doesn’t consider himself to be a natural entrepreneur and in-fact, used to think business wasn’t interesting. He does however, enjoy the idea of being able to set your own rules and do things in a way that makes sense to him. Sean and his co-founders identified the bottled water business to be prime for disruption since it didn’t make economic sense the way the bottled water industry is setup. Bevi is a water machine that purifies tap water and then allows users create a variety of drinks from plain still water to sparkling water with a variety of fruit flavor options. In this episode, Sean talks about: Why he didn’t want to start his company as a non-profit Why the bottled water industry doesn’t make economic sense The benefits of making a drink at the point of use Why Bevi shifted from focusing on gyms and vending locations to offices Where he sees the future of the beverage industry headed – including from a centralized to distributed supply chain The biggest lessons he took away from Techstars Links from today’s episode: Boston Organics RISD hint water TechStars Katie Rae LeanBox Litographs Google Tasks Uber Amazon Prime Dune Crime and Punishment If you liked this episode: Follow the podcast on Twitter Subscribe on iTunes or your podcast app and write a review Get in touch with feedback, ideas, or to say hi: nic {AT} startupbostonpodcast [DOT] com Music by: Broke For Free
Carey Green's debut novel, Dragon Slayer: Beginnings, is the topic of conversation in this episode. This book is the first in the Dragon Slayer Chronicles trilogy. This is a great introduction to the fantasy genre and while it is very much a coming of age story like many in this genre it has other elements that help it to stand out. Also in this episode is Nicole's Fact about a dog that really did eat "homework" and JD's Tip about some really cool literary t-shirts. It's like a success story you'd read in a business book. Less than four years after launching your startup, you've built a dedicated community of supporters, expanded well beyond your core product offering, and received coverage from the likes of Buzzfeed, TechCrunch and Mashable. And you've done it with only a handful of employees. Jack Neary, Head of Community at Litographs, is living this story. In this role, he's has helped bring exposure to the popular Boston-based company, known for its stunning collection of posters, t-shirts and tote bags, with designs comprising the full text of novels. Jack stopped by to explain how he's blended media relations and social media marketing to bring exposure to Litographs, how the Boston startup community has lent a hand, and how his own interest in literature has helped him to authentically market and sell to "the Bookternet."
