Stephen Graham Jones should need little introduction. He was the guest on the 13th episode of this podcast, talking about his horror masterpiece The Only Good Indian. He was also on a panel episode with Paul Tremblay and Josh Malerman talking about one of our favorite topics Basketball. Very excited to point out that I got to be Stpehen's first interview on this incredible vampire novel Buffalo Hunter Hunter. In this conversation we talk about Stpehen's Vampire class that inspired this book, his process on it, some of our favorite vampire classics and of course the forthcoming novel (out 3/18/25). We stay mostly spoiler free, but I give a warning before we go deeper into the themes and the final act. Buffalo Hunter Hunter was one of the best reads I had last year. One of the new releases I consider a masterpiece. Very excited to offer this episode. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

Get Clay's books here!Welcome to my new show, Couchsurfing Critics! The ever-talented and amazing Clay McLeod Chapman has returned for another epic round of conversation with yours truly. This time, we're smashing duration records and defying interview conventions. It is, I would say, the closest to just us grabbing coffee and chatting that we could have hoped for, and I am very pleased with the result. For those of you looking for a concentrated discussion of Clay's delicious upcoming release WAKE UP AND OPEN YOUR EYES, might I direct you elsewhere. But! If you want to know what we think about some of the best authors working today, our thoughts on looking at people's book shelves, and some getting really serious about cancer and the pitfalls of belonging to a family, I've got just what the doctor ordered. (and apparently for Nat Cassidy the doctor ordered some Beano, because he is certainly labeled a car farter in this episode. Sorry Nat. I think it was out of love?)In addition to Clay's amazing examination of the culture of radicalization in contemporary America, I would like to recommend that you listen to his top quality podcast called FEARMONGERS. He gets on the best of horror guests, has delightful conversations, and even cajoles them into reading for us all. It's a great little library-backed bit of entertainment.Coming up on The ARC PartyI've got a lot on the books for the next few weeks. I will be recording a discussion with Eric LaRocca in a few days to support the release of his new novel AT DARK I BECOME LOATHSOME, which everyone needs to read. It's grief horror done so so so so so so so well. Also, I'll be talking with Craig Clevenger about the reissue of his debut novel THE CONTORTIONIST'S HANDBOOK. I'm really stoked about this one, as it's been one of my favorites for a while now.I've just recently confirmed with Chuck Wendig that he will be joining me at some point to discuss THE STAIRCASE IN THE WOODS, which I loved!I am planning something called MALERMONTH, where I have on a guest or guests to talk about some awesome Josh Malerman novels, including hopefully DAPHNE, PEARL, and maybe another. GOBLIN? We'll see. I've also started talks with Cynthia Pelayo's representation, and have some tentative plans with Joshua Hull, and many more. I'm also very excited for Shortwave Publishing's first quarterly shipment for 2025 to its Kickstarter backers. The box looks insane and I'm so excited! I'm so scared! Finally for you YouTuberssssss: This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.thearcparty.com/subscribe

Hey bookworms! Did you miss us? We're back with a supersized episode of My Sister's TBR, packed with bookish goodness to make up for our brief hiatus. In this episode, we're diving deep into our September reads, sharing our thoughts on the spooky Featured Read, "The Hollow Places" by T. Kingfisher, and giving you a sneak peek into what we're currently reading.Catching Up and Bookish NewsWe know it's been a while since our last episode, but life threw us a few curveballs with tech issues, medical appointments, and birthday celebrations. But we're back in action now, and we're excited to chat with you about all things bookish.First up, we've got some exciting news for fans of Freida McFadden, Colleen Hoover, and Elle Kennedy: their books are getting screen adaptations! We're also thrilled about the new J.K. Rowling illustrated book, "Christmas at Hogwarts," which is sure to be a must-have for any Harry Potter fan.September ReadsDespite a busy month, we managed to squeeze in some fantastic reads. Stacey devoured the spooky Featured Read, "The Hollow Places," and also enjoyed the steamy Dramione fanfic "Sex and Occlumency." Rebecca ventured into the horror genre with "Giving Up the Ghost".We also had a few reading mishaps, including a one-star horror short story that left us feeling underwhelmed. But overall, September was a month filled with diverse reads!Featured Read: The Hollow PlacesOur deep dive into "The Hollow Places" was filled with laughter, chills, and thought-provoking insights. We discussed the book's strengths, such as its unique premise and relatable characters, as well as its weaknesses, like the repetitive nature of some scenes. We also touched on the inspiration behind the story, the classic horror novella "The Willows."Current Reads and October PreviewWe're currently reading a variety of books, including "House of Sky and Breath" by Sarah J. Maas, "One House Left" by Kendall Kulper, and "Incidents Around the House" by Josh Malerman. We're also looking forward to our October Featured Read, "The Pumpkin Spice Cafe" by Laurie Gilmore, which promises a cozy autumnal vibe.Join the ConversationWe hope you enjoyed this supersized episode of My Sister's TBR. Cynthia “Cina” Pelayo is a two-time Bram Stoker award-winning writer, storyteller, and creator based in Chicago. Stephen King has Maine, Josh Malerman has Michigan and Cina is quickly becoming the voice of all this street-level crime and horror in Chicago. In this interview, we focus on her novel Forgotten Sisters. The novel combines horror, crime, and dark fairy tale vibes. We talk about Pelayo's influences, and the city of Chicago and go super deep into the writing process. The first 30 minutes is spoiler-free, after a warning we open it up— and go deep into this fantastic new writer. Send us a Text Message. My unpaid cohost returns. Josh Malerman ladies and gentlemen. Josh has been on the show many times before, but never have I been so excited to speak to him. His latest novel, Incidents Around the House is about as good a horror book as I've ever covered on this show… or possibly read in my life. It's the story of a young girl, her family, and the entity pursuing them, but – as you'll hear – it goes a whole lot deeper (and unforgivingly darker) than that. Josh tells us about the unique process of writing this book. We discuss the challenges of child narrators. I beg insight into the demons and half-glimpsed horrors of his story… and I assault him with odd comparisons. It's all very freewheeling and fun. As the 199th episode should be, before we tip over the edge into a whole new century. Enjoy – and read this damn book! Other books mentioned: The House of Last Resort (2024), Christopher GoldenCoraline (2002), by Neil GaimanThe Exorcist (1971), by William Peter BlattyGood Night Sleep Tight (2024), by Brian EvensonNightmares and Dreamscapes (1993), by Stephen KingFrom a Buick 8 (2002), by Stephen King11/22/63 (2011), by Stephen King Support Talking Scared on Patreon Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the Show.

Malerman talks about his deep dive into the literary tradition of "haunted house" tales with this new story about Bela, an 8-year-old narrator who discovers a malevolent entity inside of her house that she refers to as "Other Mommy," a strange and possibly ghostly imaginary-frienemy who starts to creepily ask Bela a strange question: “Can I go inside your heart?”  More info at: https://joshmalerman.com/ And follow Josh on Instagram for details about his upcoming book-launch at Ant Hall in Hamtramck! https://www.instagram.com/joshmalerman/

Josh Malerman and Wow Town got together while I was up in Michigan, for a rehearsal of their June 23 performance commemorating the release of Josh's book INCIDENTS AROUND THE HOUSE. I was there, I recorded it, and now I'm sharing it with you all. For the YouTube folks (no video! Audio only): Quick noteThis recording was made at a racecourse, so you will regularly hear racing engine noises in the background. It's nothing that will impact the listening experience, but would be one of those “what the heck?” things if I didn't explain why it was going on....“Bela…”...“can I go into your heart?” Get full access to The ARC Party at www.thearcparty.com/subscribe

Returning for his fourth appearance on the podcast Bird Box author Josh Malerman is back! This time we talk about Josh's five-novella collection Spin a Black Yarn. To me, there is no more consistent voice in horror. An outside observer who doesn't actually read his work and judges by the mainstream -meme culture of Bird Box might not have any idea just how creative, and experimental he is. I was a huge fan of Malerman's last novella collection Goblin, which we talked about in a previous episode. Like that episode, this one is a nuts-and-bolts discussion about the narrative construction behind these stories. We also have a little non-spoiler discussion about Josh's forthcoming novel Incidents Around the House. This is a must-listen for Malermaniacs and anyone interested in writing weird or horror fiction. We mostly avoid spoilers but an hour in I give a full spoiler warning. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

Some stories are too short, some are too long, but some stories are just right. It's the Goldilocks zone: the novella. What is the secret to crafting a longer story but not letting it run away from you? How do you sustain the terror beyond the shortest form? How do you know what to keep in and what to cut out? This is the art of the novella, and I'm joined by a pair of expert practitioners to talk it through. Josh Malerman and Ronald Malfi have both published novella collections this year – Ron's They Lurk and Josh's Spin a Black Yarn contain multitudes. From motel-lot self-mutilation to deathbed serial killer confessions, via the Oregon backwoods and the core of Saturn(!!), these stories take us to places without wasting a word.Josh and Ron provide a masterclass on the art of the novella, as well as ALL the enthusiasm you could ever pack into an hour of conversation. This one will put a smile on your face and inspiration in your typin' fingers! Enjoy. They Lurk was published was published on July 18th by Titan; Spin a Black Yarn was published August 15th by Del Rey Books mentioned: Daphne (2022), by Josh MalermanGoblin (2021), by Josh MalermanGhostwritten (2022), by Ronald MalfiPet Sematary (1983), by Stephen KingThe Long Walk (1979), by Stephen KingMrs Dalloway (1925) by Virginia WoolfHouses Without Doors (1990), by Peter StraubBloom (2023), by Delilah S.
