In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, the hosts, Meaghan and Arthur, delve into a new chapter of the podcast. The audience is informed about Shirin's temporary departure due to her pregnancy as Shirin steps away to focus on her growing family, Arthur, co-producer of the Fully-Booked podcast, steps in to co-host alongside Meaghan. This change, while temporary, marks a significant shift in the dynamic of the show. Arthur’s background in coding and his technical contributions to the website bring a fresh perspective to the podcast. The hosts humorously discuss his 60% familiarity with the topics they’ll cover and joke about potential jousting matches for hosting rights when Shirin returns. Despite the change, the team is optimistic about the new direction and is ready to embrace 2025 with fresh content and themes. Kicking Off 2025: A Sci-Fi Focus As the podcast launches into the new year, Meaghan and Arthur introduce a month-long exploration of science fiction. This is a notable shift, as Meaghan admits that she and Shirin have historically read very little of the genre. However, Arthur’s passion for sci-fi provides the perfect opportunity to delve into its rich and diverse discussions. The hosts acknowledge the challenges they faced in planning sci-fi content in the past. With Arthur’s enthusiasm, planning the month’s content was surprisingly straightforward. The podcast promises to cover various aspects of sci-fi, including genre mashups, successful and unsuccessful adaptations, and newer releases. This thematic focus aims to appeal to long-time sci-fi enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Sci-Fi Genre Mashups: Exploring New Horizons One of the main themes of the episode is the exploration of sci-fi genre mashups. Meaghan and Arthur discuss how sci-fi often blends seamlessly with other genres, creating unique storytelling opportunities. They highlight several examples: Sci-Fi and Mystery: The Midsolar Murders series by Mur Lafferty combines amateur sleuthing with extraterrestrial settings. Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter and Wayward Pines series mix speculative fiction with gripping mysteries. Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain explores a medical mystery linked to a satellite crash, blending suspense with scientific intrigue. Sci-Fi and Horror: The hosts delve into the subgenre of sci-fi horror, highlighting works like Caitlin Starling’s The Luminous Dead and David Wellington’s Red Space series (Paradise-1, Revenant X). They also discuss the historical roots of the genre, referencing classics like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend. Sci-Fi and Fantasy: Works like Christopher Paolini’s To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series exemplify the blend of futuristic technology and fantastical elements. Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth series introduces necromancy into a science fiction setting, creating a unique narrative style. Sci-Fi and Historical Fiction: Stephen King’s 11/22/63 combines time travel with the historical backdrop of the Kennedy assassination. Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle explores an alternate history where the Axis powers won World War II. Sci-Fi and Romance: Meaghan and Arthur touch on the lighter side of sci-fi with titles like Alyssa Cole’s The AI Who Loved Me, which combines AI with human connections, and Ruby Dixon’s monster romance series. Sci-Fi in Other Media: Adaptations and Recommendations The hosts transition into discussing sci-fi in other media, particularly film and television. They reference the ongoing Silo series and compare its dystopian elements to works like Blake Crouch’s Wayward Pines. Meaghan shares her thoughts on the Alien film franchise, admitting she’s new to many of its sequels. The pair humorously critique the series’ ups and downs, including the divisive Prometheus prequels. The episode also touches on notable sci-fi adaptations and their impact: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch was recently adapted into a TV series. Man in the High Castle adapted for Amazon Prime. The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield blends Cold War intrigue with space exploration. The hosts express excitement about revisiting sci-fi classics and exploring lesser-known gems. They encourage listeners to explore Fully Booked’s website for related articles and reviews from contributors. Looking Ahead with Enthusiasm As the episode concludes, Meaghan and Arthur emphasize the importance of embracing new experiences. They acknowledge that while the month of sci-fi exploration is a departure from their usual fare, it presents an opportunity for growth and discovery. The duo encourages listeners to join them on this journey, whether through reading, watching, or engaging with the content on their website and social media platforms. The hosts’ banter, combined with their genuine curiosity and enthusiasm, sets the tone for an exciting year ahead. With a mix of humor, insight, and personal anecdotes, the episode invites listeners to explore the vast possibilities of sci-fi and its many intersections with other genres. In Part 2 of this episode of "Your One Black Friend," Joli and guest host Kosmic Jedi continue their exploration of parallel universes, inspired by the themes and narrative of Blake Crouch's novel "Dark Matter," now a series on Apple TV. (Part 2 of this discussion deals only with episode 1-3 of the series.) Kosmic & Joli delve into the concept of infinite realities and discuss how this idea allows for endless possibilities and outcomes, making the show's narrative both exciting and thought-provoking. How does the concept of infinite realities reshape our understanding of personal identity? How does soul memory influence intuition and decision-making? How does exploring alternate timelines affect our perception of regret? Joli and Kosmic Jedi analyze the complex themes of the show, including Eastern mysticism, physics, and psychological analysis. They appreciate how these elements are intricately woven together to create a multi-layered narrative that encourages viewers to think deeply about the nature of reality and the choices we make. The discussion also touches on character relationships, focusing on the sacrifices and decisions made by the characters, particularly in the context of gender roles and personal fulfillment. They compare the show to other media like "Rick and Morty," "Invincible," and movies such as "The One" with Jet Li and "Deja Vu" with Denzel Washington, highlighting how these works handle the concept of multiple realities. Joli and Kosmic Jedi reflect on their own lives, contemplating how different decisions could have led to different outcomes. They emphasize the importance of intuition and the belief in multiple chances or lifetimes to experience different paths, suggesting that this mindset can reduce regret and anxiety by accepting the existence of parallel realities. The conversation also explores philosophical insights, particularly the idea of letting go of regret and anxiety by recognizing that this is not the only lifetime or timeline. They discuss how adopting this perspective can lead to a more relaxed and observant approach to life, reducing the fear of missing out and the intensity of decision-making. Throughout the discussion, Joli and Kosmic Jedi express a strong appreciation for the show and its ability to spark deep, reflective conversations about life, choices, and the nature of reality. They commend the creators for their ability to address complex themes in an engaging and thought-provoking manner, making it a standout piece of media. Youroneblackfriend.com •••

What impact do the choices we make have on the paths our lives take? The conversation organically transitions into a broader discussion about the concept of time, routine, and how society's rigid structures often conflict with individual natural rhythms, particularly for neurodivergent individuals. Joli and Kosmic highlight how modern technology and societal expectations can stifle creativity and productivity, suggesting that breaking free from these constraints can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life. Throughout the episode, the dynamic duo skillfully intertwines personal anecdotes with speculative fiction. Andrew is back and it's catch up time! Kevin talks Bodkin and Andrew finally digs into X-Men 97, The Bear, and Fallout. Kevin also covers Obituary and Dark Matter on Apple TV + Lauren is out this week, but we have Andrew again so you aren't stuck with just Kevin. They dive into the X-Men 97 finale, and the season in general. It's a great season with a ton of memorable moments! Next up, Kevin takes us on a podcasting journey to Dublin, Ireland with Bodkin on Netflix. It's the tale of a podcaster trying to revitalize his once successful career with a true crime mystery revolving around the Samhain holiday many decades before. It has an eclectic cast and the dark comedy nature keeps it exciting. This also leads Kevin to another Irish series, Obituary with the same female lead. It's also a wonderful dark comedy and highly recommended! Andrew takes us into his not-too-wayback machine as he finally got on board with The Bear and Fallout. As Kevin so wisely predicted (what a genius, really...) Andrew loved the personality extravaganza of The Bear. Surprisingly, though, he wasn't quite as enamored with Fallout, though he did enjoy it. Kevin closes out the show with the new Blake Crouch adaptation, Dark Matter, on Apple TV. It's a slow dark drama about alternate realities and identity theft in a whole new way. It's well acted and directed, so if you are in the mood for a grounded, heady, sci-fi show, give it a watch! As always, thank you for watching. This week, the Regular Joes pay tribute to the late great Roger Corman (1926-2024) very likely the most prolific B movie Producer/Director ever.  Whether you saw a bootleg copy of the never released first Fantastic Four (1994) film, rocked out with the Ramones and Riff Randall in Rock ‘n' Roll High School (1979) or savored the 1960's Vincent Price Edgar Allan Poe adaptations that made the afternoon movie circuit in the 70s.  It's almost impossible to have not been exposed to his work. Few creators have left such a large footprint … just as few creators have made as many films about gigantic human beings trampling things. The Joe's also take a look at the first episode of Dark Matter on Apple plus. Which is based on a book by Blake Crouch that Tod really likes.  Even if you are thinking you are over the idea of a multiverse you should give this one a try.  Wait … was that a SPOILER? There also What's in the Box and the usual Random Topics. Thanks for Listening!

He compares the series to the book, expressing satisfaction with its faithful adaptation while foreseeing potential filler in the show's long episodes. Victor also discusses the mixed critical reception of 'Dark Matter' and its exploration of alternate lives, a theme resonating in pop culture's recent fascination with multiverses. Additionally, Victor champions 'The Big Door Prize', another Apple TV+ series based on a novel. Despite its low popularity, he praises its exploration of personal destiny and recommends it for its unique storytelling and emotional depth. Victor then discusses his relationship with Blake Crouch's works, recommending other shows like 'Shining Girls', 'Constellation', and discussing the concept of doppelgangers through various recommendations. The episode also includes a 'science corner' where Victor explains quantum superposition and multiverses, providing a deeper understanding of the science behind the concepts explored in 'Dark Matter' and similar narratives. 00:00 Introduction to Dark Matter: A New Sci-Fi Thriller 00:09 Initial Thoughts on Dark Matter and Its Adaptation 01:05 Exploring the Multiverse in Pop Culture 01:32 The Science Behind Dark Matter and Multiverse Theories 01:38 Diving Into The Big Door Prize: An Underrated Gem 02:29 Apple TV Plus and Its Literary Adaptations 08:17 Dark Matter: Breaking Down the First Two Episodes 40:20 Recommendations: Doppelgangers and Alternate Realities 43:26 Science Corner: Understanding Superposition and Multiverses 50:06 Wrapping Up and Looking Ahead
