250227PC: Killing me softlyMensch Mahler am 27.02.2025 Ich habe immer noch die wunderschöne LP mit dem aufklappbaren Flügel. Darauf ist ihrgrößter Hit »Killing Me Softly with His Song«. »The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face« wurde sie mit insgesamt vier Grammy-Preisen ausgezeichnet. Hosted on Acast. Laura talks with writer and performer Diane Flacks about her latest solo show, Guilt (A Love Story). Diane opens up about turning her sometimes painful personal experiences into compelling plays. She shares how she thinks there's a death of fun in theatre and why she pushes herself to take risks in her work and not play it safe. Diane also talks about her writing experiences for TV, including her stint for the hit series “Kids In The Hall.”Guilt (A Love Story) by Diane Flacks.
Diane Flacks has always felt the power of Jewish guilt. But when when she decided she wanted a divorce, that guilt grew to a whole new level. She constantly questioned the process, even while she was going through it, thinking about whether it was the right move or not. To process these thoughts and emotions, the theatre artist decided to transform this experience into her latest one-woman show, Guilt (A Love Story). Using humour and self-reflection, Flacks lays bare the story of what happened between her and her ex-wife, the impact of divorce on their kids and all the things she feels guilty about from a generational lens. The show just finished its run at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto, and is going to the Montreal's Centaur Theatre from Mar. 12-30 before heading to Winnipeg at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre from Apr. 3-20. Ahead of those tour dates, Flacks joins old friend Ralph Benmergui on Not That Kind of Rabbi, a show about personal journeys and spirituality, to describe the story behind the play and how Jews default to comedy to analyze life. Credits Not That Kind of Rabbi is hosted by Ralph Benmergui and produced by Michael Fraiman. We're a member of The CJN Podcast Network. Diane Flacks is an Emmy-nominated comedy writer who's worked on shows like “Workin' Moms” and “Baroness Von Sketch Show.” Her latest project — a one-woman play called “Guilt (A Love Story)” — is a reflection on her divorce and the grief, fear and overwhelming guilt that followed. Diane joins Tom to tell us about the play and what's funny about going through the worst time of your life.

Journalists report the news. They hear about a story, write it up, verify the facts, and then hit “publish”. But, occasionally a story comes in from someone else and then they, more or less, just hit “publish”.Public relations professionals are master spin doctors. They know how to get the story they want to tell, which may or may not be true (or at least not the full truth), published in major newspapers and sites across the country.Everyone does this: governments, corporations, institutions, police departments, and so on. And as the number of journalists in the country continues its slow decline, the number of people working in PR has increased by nearly eight times in the past thirty years. With that disparity, it's becoming increasingly difficult to verify and dedicate time to every story that comes in.Journalist Cecil Rosner sits down with Jesse and Karyn for a rich discussion about the power that PR firms can hold in setting the narrative in what the public should think and believe. If you've driven to Isla Vista lately, you know that it can be hard to find a parking spot sometimes. The local government (IVCSD) is digging into data about who and when people are parking in IV - and just how many parking spaces there are. IVCSD GM Jonathan Abboud shares with KCSB's Dick Flacks the reasoning behind the call for a parking study. Then - is 'Dormzilla' dead? Flacks says it appears so, as UC Santa Barbara reps come up with an alternate plan to build student housing on the site of the proposed Munger Hall, the virtually windowless mega-dorm that generated criticism from near and far, making international headlines. Get the latest, on this week's Inside Isla Vista.

canadaLANDBACK is a co-production of Canada's National Observer and Canadaland.Since 2019 five journalists have been arrested at land defenses, several others have been detained or threatened with arrest - why?Host Karyn Pugliese believes the answer is to be found in two land defenses that unfolded in the 1990s. KanesatakeGustafsen LakeOf all the things journalists have to cover in Indigenous communities, land actions are the most complicated, involving a tangle of history and relationships journalists trip into unprepared. Landback movements question Canada's legitimacy as a nation, and its character as a champion of human rights. How the media understood and told these stories mattered. State violence as a response to a human rights issue is indefensible, but it is a justified response to a criminal matter. So what are land defenses? Is the state enforcing the rule of law against armed terrorists?Or is Canada using violence to crush human rights defenders? This episode is not about the land defenses themselves - but about the emergence of a public relations war to control the story the media tells.Host/Producer: Karyn Pugliese, editor-in-chief, Canada's National ObserverProducer: Kim WheelerAdditional research and support for this episode Beverly Andrews and Cara McKenna. Brian Flacks was named the new head coach at Stanford University on March 23, just a couple weeks after Jon Vargas' surprising departure. He'll take over as the men's varsity head coach, only the fifth in the history of that storied program which has won 11 national titles. That's a lot, but not enough according to many observers who now look to one of the most successful high school coaches in America to bring more trophies back to The Farm in the coming years. We talk about those expectations, what he's done in his short time on campus, and, fascinatingly, about resentment and how it quite possibly stoked his passion for coaching the sport at the highest levels.
What's behind the major housing crisis at UC Santa Barbara and why hasn't UCSB stuck with the housing plans it outlined years ago in its Long Range Development Plan (LRDP)? KCSB's Robert Stark speaks with Dick Flacks, UCSB professor emeritus and chair of the non-profit collaborative Sustainable University Now (SUN) to try and find answers. Flack mentions that the UCSB Faculty Senate will be taking a closer look at the proposed "Dormzilla" Munger Hall project this Friday (4/15). Retired UCSB sociology professor Dick Flacks dives into the debate over Santa Barbara's proposal to create a 2 percent cap on rent increases. Flacks offers counterpoints to residential property owners who say that maximizing rent increases would hurt tenants because they would not be able to make repairs or conduct regular maintenance. Flacks makes a case for tenants and talks about ways to increase affordable housing. He says that the city should consider building on parking lots, working with other regions to take a bigger view, and work with the city's Housing Authority to acquire more land to build affordable housing projects. Flacks also explains how he believes nonprofit social housing will help to create more affordable housing. Flacks is a Santa Barbara legend and regarded as one of the most progressive thinkers on issues of social justice. Please by subscribe to this podcast and visit SantaBarbaraTalks.com

The top-rated weekly law and politics podcast -- LegalAF -- produced by MeidasTouch and anchored by MT founder and civil rights lawyer, Ben Meiselas and national trial lawyer and strategist, Michael Popok, is back for another hard-hitting, thought-provoking yet entertaining look at the most compelling developments at the intersection of law and politics in real-time. On this episode, Ben and Popok explore and explode this week's political litigation developments: 1. Bombshell revelations about why Trump chose Rudy “I will say anything” Giuliani to be his lawyer when no legitimate lawyer would take his cases. 2. The troubling indictment for lying of democratic lawyer Michael Sussman by Trump's special prosecutor looking into Russian interference for providing compelling evidence of Russian involvement, but allegedly not disclosing to the FBI that he also worked for the Clinton Campaign. 3. This week's decision by a North Carolina 3-judge trial panel to overturn the state's new Voter ID laws as racially-biased and violative of the State's Equal Protection Clause. 4. The FBI's bumbling investigation of Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh, the 4,5000 tips it received prior to his confirmation, and what it means for the future. 5. This week's decision by an upstate NY federal judge to block New York's front-line health worker vax mandate on First Amendment, religious grounds. 6. Key Developments in the USA v. the State of Texas case challenging the constitutionality of the abortion ban and now assigned to an Obama-appointee federal judge sitting in Austin, and a full hearing on the matter to be held by him in 2-weeks' time. 7. A “friends of the court” brief just filed by the architect of the Texas Bounty Hunter/Handmaid's Tale abortion ban, the state's former solicitor general, seeking not only the overturn of Roe v. Wade, but also that women should go back to the Dark Ages of abstaining from sex altogether, and calling for the elimination of gay marriage and gay sex as a constitutional right. 8. And, updates, updates on: (a) E. Jean Carroll's defamation suit against Trump in Manhattan federal court; and (b) a Jan6 insurrectionist trying to walk away from a sweet-heart 8 month plea deal for breaking into the Senate Chamber by claiming his plea agreement was “forged.” Special Easter Eggs Alert: Popok receives NO yellow cards from Ben on this episode but does demand that Ben wear a LegalAF t-shirt on the next show. Covid has had profound effects on water polo as it is practiced throughout the United States. This conversation is hopefully the first of several in which we discuss exactly how the pandemic has altered high school and club programs in a variety of states and localities. Brian Flacks is a now well-known name in the industry having coached at Harvard-Westlake in Los Angeles for nearly a decade, in addition to founding on of the nation's most successful clubs, LA Premier. Paul Splitt is a multiple-time state high school championship coach who currently heads up the program at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnatti, Ohio. He is also a founding member of Moose Water Polo (best club name in the US?), and leads the Youth boys ODP team for the Great Lakes Zone. In a frank discussion of how the pandemic has hit their programs we talk about the vast differences between Ohio and Southern California, and delve in to observations of how demoralizing it is for athletes to be limited by the various restrictions in place.

For many people around the country, we're approaching nearly two full months of self-isolation due to COVID-19. The pandemic has affected our way of life in so many ways, and that's no different for the public relations industry. Marketers, PR pros, and communicators have had to navigate a new reality where news coverage is so focused on the medical, economic, and social impacts of the virus. It's really hard to talk about anything without also talking about the coronavirus, which means brands have to be careful about how they choose to present their business at this time. T. Garland Stansell is the newly elected Chair of the Public Relations Society of America. He is also the Chief Communications Officer for Children's of Alabama. He joined Hacks and Flacks to discuss how brands are changing the way they communicate and the long-term impact of this pandemic on the public relations industry.
Earlier this month, beloved community member and outspoken housing rights activist Mickey Flacks passed away at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer. As part of our tribute to her tireless work in local and community politics, we present a 2013 interview with her and former KCSB reporter Peyton Stotelmyre where she explains her support for the Average Unit Density Housing Program, her support of which stands as a testament to her lifelong legacy battling for low-income housing for Santa Barbara residents.

Spirit of 608: Fashion, Entrepreneurship, Sustainability + Tech
We're diving into branding again on the Spirit of 608 podcast this week - and for good reason: it's consistently one of the top puzzles independent fashion companies have to sort out. And let's not forget: you can't really ever just "sort it" and move on. Great branding requires upkeep and evolution, as well as a helluva lot of content to communicate the right messages over time. But enough about the challenges - you know those. What you want to know is how to crack that nut, like yesterday? Who better to come talk to us about all things branding than a woman who escaped the corporate fashion world to work one-on-one with ethical and sustainable apparel brands and small businesses from her home base in Charlotte, NC? Meet this week's guest, Marisa Flacks, Founder of RISE Creative Co. What you'll learn Why ethical brands, specifically, can get a branding boost from understanding a little about anthropology. Marisa brings her training in anthropology to the brand strategies she helps create for her clients and, in so doing, helps them take cultural issues into account when they're developing their messaging and positioning. Okay so what does that mean? You'll hear more on the show, obviously, but just think about the complex web of concerns that comes up when you're talking about the treatment of workers in, say, manufacturing facilities in developing countries? Or how perspectives on child labor could be different depending on the world in which you live? Marisa is adamant about talking through things like that as the strategy develops - instead of just slapping a green-washed approach onto a company's messaging and calling it done. How you'll be inspired Putting yourself out there is a scary thing for most people (it's been disproven, but there's the oft-quoted stat about public speaking freaking people out more than death). While the thought of being the public face of your company might sound deliciously great for some entrepreneurs, others are beyond uncomfortable with it and put all the attention on their products instead. During our chat, Marisa says that while either preference can work, there is a real benefit to making things personal. Your customers and people watching your brand are, after all, the exact people you're trying to convince to get so interested in what you're doing that they'll give you money for it.
