To celebrate his brilliantly funny and profound one man show "Just For Us" coming to HBO this Saturday night at 10PM and then streaming on MAX after that, Phil and David are revisiting their wonderful "Lunch" with internationally touring comedian Alex Edelman whose acclaimed, brilliantly funny one man show, "Just For Us" opened off-Broadway in 2022 before premiering on Broadway in 2023; it was named "New York Times" Critic's Pick both times and has already won an Obie. Alex broke bread -- okay, Courage Bagels -- at Phil's house. Alex brought along a surprise mutual friend, the great TV writer Jenji Kohan (creator of "Weeds" and "Orange Is The New Black") who will be a future guest. Please note: this free-flowing and fun conversation -- in which Norman Lear is discussed -- was recorded shortly before Lear's recent death. Elle contribue régulièrement au média B2B Welcome to the Jungle. The writer-producer Jenji Kohan has given us some of the best depictions of women on television. Nancy Botwin of Weeds followed a Breaking Bad-like path from suburban widow to druglord. The diverse cast of Orange Is the New Black revolutionized TV with not one, but dozens, of empathetic, flawed, fascinating characters. And GLOW, which followed a scrappy women's wrestling operation, gave us a women's sports show unlike any other. The essay collection The Women of Jenji Kohan, edited by Scarlett Harris, captures all of the complexity of Kohan's work, with both admiration and warranted criticism. In this episode, we speak to two of the collection's contributors: Dani Bethea, who wrote about Orange Is the New Black's depictions of violence against Black women; and Sydney Urbanek, who wrote about Nancy Botwin's inability to be “cured” of her demons on Weeds. This week, join us and our friend Annie of Smart Marcias as we discuss all things wrestling, from indie to pro, with a focus on Season 1 of Netflix's GLOW. These ladies really kick some ass, and they look good doing it!
Even when she was in school, Jenji Kohan didn't like being told what she couldn't do. So it makes sense that after she was told there was no chance she'd ever get on a TV writing staff, Jenji would make the hit shows Weeds, Orange is the New Black and now GLOW. Jenji tells Marc about her early influences, her string of unsatisfying writing jobs, and the inspiration she drew from working with Tracey Ullman.
