It's really exciting and important to have kids playing Irish music. And it takes organization, skill, and willing adults to create learning opportunities for them. In this episode Annmarie Acosta, Lexie Boatright, Clare Cason, Oisín Mac Diarmada, Maisie Lynch, Eileen Estes, Agi Kovacs, Ken Fleming, and Aidan Flanagan—and very special guest students, parents, and community members—share ideas for building the next generation of Irish players and dancers, with and without support and acknowledgement from the rest of us…

Why Would Arlene Leave Fermanagh?Arlene Foster talks of leaving the North in the event of a Yes referendum vote for a United Ireland. “I cannot see how I could be British in Fermanagh, in a United Ireland, because by the very definition you are no longer British because you are living in an all-Ireland state.”I see no reason for Arlene to leave Fermanagh. That will be her decision of course, not mine. But Fermanagh is her homeplace regardless of its future constitutional status. Why anyone who suffered during the conflict and survived as she has, would voluntarily leave such a beautiful peaceful place simply because it would be part of a United Ireland is worthy of deeper analysis. Maybe Arlene should elaborate? The second battle of Moore StreetAs you read this week's column cast your mind back to Dublin 105 years ago. Pádraig Pearse and James Connolly had stood at the entrance of the GPO on Monday and issued the Proclamation of The Republic to the Irish People. After five days of fierce fighting and with the GPO in Sackville St (now O'Connell St) in flames the Volunteers were forced on the Friday evening to evacuate that position. There was a British Army barricade at the top of the street where it joined with Parnell Street. The O Rahilly led a failed charge to break through into Parnell Street. Wounded he was to die against the side wall of 25 Moore Street after writing a last poignent letter to his wife. Carrying a wounded James Connolly, and under constant machine gun and sniper fire the GPO Garrison had made their way across Henry Street to Number 10 Moore Street. They broke through the outside wall of Number 10 and began tunnelling their way up through the terrace of houses. The next morning – Saturday - five of the signatories to the Proclamation – Pádraig Pearse, Seán Mac Diarmada, Tom Clarke, James Connolly and Joseph Plunkett met in Number 16. There they discussed their next steps. Surrounded on all sides by British forces; with no prospect of success and concerned about the ongoing risk to civilians, the leaders reluctantly decided to surrender. Decades later Moore Street and the lanes surrounding it – The Battlefield Site - stand alongside national monuments in other states around the world where the right to independence and freedom was fought for. It is, as the National Museum of Ireland has described: “The most important site in modern Irish history.”Regrettably, successive Dublin governments have taken a different view preferring to back private developers whose plans would see the destruction of much of this iconic area. Currently a second battle of Moore Street is taking place. A company called Hammerson is about to lodge planning permission for a development that would ruin the Battlefield Site if it is given the go-ahead.
Despite the lack of concerts and festivals in 2020, musical artists and bands have had plenty of time to write and record new tunes and songs -- one of the few benefits from this ongoing pandemic. Tim and Mike share the new music that has crossed over their collective transoms this year featuring music from the The Byrne Brothers, Andy Lamy, Van Morrison (Official), Oisín Mac Diarmada, Orla Fallon Official Page, Wallis Bird, Celtic Woman, John Redmond, Emma Langford, Barleyjuice, Michael Casey, Eamon O'Leary, Ryan Sheridan and so much more. What a way to start of the new year!! Check out the podcast at www.windycityirishradio.com or listen live on Sundays from noon to 1pm on 750AM on WNDZ.

It was a pleasure speaking with Oisín Mac Diarmada about his upcoming virtual performance, Breakfast in Ireland. This special performance will be Zoom live streamed from Sligo, Ireland with Oisín Mac Diarmada (fiddle) and Samantha Harvey (dance / piano) Fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada has spent most of his musical life living in Sligo, an area noted historically for an extraordinarily rich fiddle tradition. Founder of leading traditional group Téada, with whom he has toured extensively throughout the world since 2001, Oisín’s solo performances have seen him play at specialist music festivals such as Masters of Tradition in West Cork, accompanying former Irish President Mary McAleese on a State visit to Romania and performing Charlie Lennon’s Island Wedding suite with the Southern Georgia Symphony Orchestra in the US and the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen in Germany. Oisín has toured frequently in recent years with noted singer/accordion-player Séamus Begley, with whom he has released 2 duo albums. Most recently, Oisín was co-author along with fellow-Sligo musician Daithí Gormley, of Fiddlers of Sligo Tunebook, a publication focussed on the Sligo fiddle tradition. Providing masterful accompaniment on piano, Samantha Harvey originally from Ventura, California now living in Sligo, is also an award-winning step dancer. Samantha's energetic dance and musical performances on stage has seen her become an increasingly prominent touring performer and teacher. Samantha has toured with a number of touring shows such as Téada, Irish Christmas in America, Ireland – The Show, and Tomaseen Foley, including performances with orchestras such as the Omaha Symphony and Edmonton Symphony. Since this will be streamed via Zoom, you may want to make sure that you have your robe on.

Welcome to the What’s On! Guide for this week. With a wide range of things to see and do around the county, Órla McNabola presents what Leitrim has in store this week. If you want to bust your gut laughing, The Corn Mill Theatre Carrigallen is the place to be on Friday and Saturday night for ‘Loophole’. “Páidí has just six months left to live and decides to leave the farm to best friend Cass. Páidí's no-good brother Rooster won’t be pleased but hopefully solicitor Miss Murphy will sort everything out, with the help of the two nosey neighbours Mairéad and Molly.” This hilariously funny 3-act play is performed by the Mohill based Acorn Players and written by John McManus. Actor Pádraig McLoughlin tells us about it. Visual artist Nollaig Molloy will host a workshop on 3D line and shadow drawing in The Dock on Saturday morning. The Roscommon-based masters student help attendees to create a temporary large scale 3D line drawing, exploring the importance of drawing as a starting point but also its use as a centre point in the process of making. Also on Saturday in The Dock will be two concerts specifically designed for parents, grandparents and carers to enjoy in the company of babies, toddlers and young children. Tabby O Callaghan and Kieran Quinn will win you and your baby over with their rock-style nursery rhymes and childrens’ songs. Successful Sligo musician Tabby tells us more. County Clare singer Shirley Grimes takes to the stage in The Glens Centre on Saturday night. A Swiss-based musician, Shirley will kick off her first ever Irish tour that night and it’s sure to be a night of beautiful music from her 3-piece band. Come and join the Dirtbirds as they navigate the stresses and strains of modern life in their brand new comedy show ‘Dirtbirds Self-Help Tour’. This rip roaring two hours of comedy gold is a unique blend of hilarious sketch comedy and stand up. If you haven’t managed to get tickets to their show in The Dock tomorrow week (Fri 18 Oct), you can catch them in The Glens Centre at a later date (Fri 9 Nov). Sinéad Culbert tells Órla about their Leitrim dates. The flags and jerseys will be all out in force in Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada this Sunday for the back to back county finals. At 1pm Drumkeerin take Leitrim Gaels in the Smith Monumentals Leitrim Intermediate Football Championship Final. Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins then battle it out with Glencar Manorhamilton in the final of the Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Football Championship at 3pm. Breifne joins Órla to discuss this weekend’s sporting action. Next Wednesday Carrick Cineplex host the premiere of ‘Dark Lies The Island’, a film based on the novels of Kevin Barry. Filmed around Boyle and Lough Key, the film encapsulates some recognisable places and also faces, amongst its Irish actors are Tommy Tiernan, Pat Shortt and Charlie Murphy. While it is not a public event, tickets can be won in this week’s Leitrim Observer.
Last weekend the Stoneywoods Festival took place in the North Leitrim village of Kiltyclogher, Breifne went along to talk to some of the locals and tourists organising and supporting the village nestled on the Fermanagh Border. Between Brexit Tractor runs, recitals, musical performances and a sheep shearing style, sponsored head and beard shave in the centre of the town there was something for everyone. Susan Carton introduces the weekend's events and a bit of a background about the village and Kilty Live, a campaign to save the local national school two years ago. Joe Sheerin explains who Sean Mac Diarmada was, the role he played in the 1916 Easter Rising and the role he has played in the life of the village in the century since his execution. He gives us a brief tour of the building and invites anyone to come and visit the local heritage centre and Mac Diarmada's homestead, the only remaining birthplace of any of the signatories of the Proclamation of Independence in 1916. The festival committee chairperson, Stella McGriskin explains the origin of the remembrance festival born out of a tragedy in the village four years ago. Breifne also talks to tourists, locals and some of the casual traders enjoying the festival and helping to raise much needed funds for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust who help families who lose a loved one overseas to bring their remains back to Ireland.
In the world of Irish traditional music, you would be hard-pressed to find a more accomplished and creative group than Téada. County Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, the group’s founder, recently sat down for an interview with irishphiladelphia.com. The conversation was wide-ranging, starting with his earliest days in County Clare learning the fiddle—sometimes when he might have preferred playing football to practicing—to a time when it seemed his career path might lie in the field of education, and ultimately to the successful career he has carved out with Téada and his talented bandmates. The picture he paints is one of a musical journey ever evolving and ever more creative.
A bright, balanced blend of Irish music and dance drawing on seasonal inspirations, Irish Christmas in America arrives on stage at Sellersville Theater 1894 Tuesday, November 27. Fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, of the Irish traditional supergroup Téada, has been producing the show for 14 years, which never ceases to delight audiences from one end of the country to the other—regardless of whether their roots are Irish.
The Christmas spirit is alive and well in the Windy City Irish Radio studios as the lads celebrate the feast day of Jolly Old St. Nick with music and song from The Gothard Sisters, We Banjo 3, Glen Hansard with Mark Geary, The High Kings, Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, The Saw Doctors, Pauly Fagan, Damien Dempsey, Andy Cooney and His Band and Seamus Begley and Oisín Mac Diarmada in preview of the annual Irish Christmas in America concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music on Sunday December 17th.
