The perfect start to the season continues with a hard fought win away to Sunderland. It wasn't without incident though, and, despite the narrative, we won it despite the referee, not because of him. Choosing the Struggle by Martina AndersonLast Saturday a packed St. Mary's gave a huge welcome to Martina Anderson who was launching her personal and hugely important autobiography – Choosing the Struggle. This is an honest and heartfelt account of Martina growing up in Derry, her experience of poverty, witnessing the excesses of the British Army and RUC and the injustice of the northern state, and deciding to take a stand against these by joining the Irish Republican Army.It is wonderfully well written with her description of her arrest and imprisonment in England, and of the conditions ion which she and her friend and comrade Ella O'Dwyer were held, a reminder of the terrible conditions that Irish POWs endured.Martina's account of her decision to seek a termination of a pregnancy and of the years of brutal strip searches are deeply personal and moving. Her experiences with Ella in Durham prison are especially shocking.Martina sees herself as an activist – in whatever area of struggle she is engaged. She is an Irish Republican who believes that the future of the island of Ireland lies in securing our right to self-determination and Unity.As an MEP she played a leadership role in the campaign to defend the Good Friday Agreement, and force the then Irish government of Enda Kenny to challenge the British government following the disastrous Brexit referendum vote. And she led the diplomatic offensive to secure a special drsignated status for the North.As her friend Eibhlín Glenholmes writes in the Foreword: “This book is also threaded in her love stories. A love for her husband Paul, of the indefatigable Anderson family, of her people, of her comrades, of the future New Irelanders who will reap what she and other women have sown – the seeds of a just and equitable society where every voice is heard.” Well ssid Eibhlín. Mary DohertyLast Friday I travelled to Carraig Airt in North Donegal to [join my friend and comrade Pat Doherty as he buried his wife Mary. I knew Mary well. She was originally from Mayo and met Pat in the early 1960s in the Gorbals in Glasgow. They married in 1967 and would have celebrated 59 years together next week.As Uachtarán Shinn Féin Mary Lou McDonald said in her oration Mary was “unique, brave, irreplaceable. She was fierce. She stood her ground. Stood by her beliefs. By her friends. And she loved her family ferociously.”Mary and Pat arrived back in Ireland as the Civil Rights campaign grew into mass street protests across the North and just a year before British soldiers were sent onto those same streets. Together they took a stand against the prejudice, discrimination and oppression they witnessed in the North. Thus began a lifetime of activism in the Republican struggle.Pat contested his first general election in 1989 and then three European elections for Sinn Féin. He became an MLA in 1998. In 2001 Pat became Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone. Mary was at the heart of each of those campaigns. I want to extend my deep condolences to Mary's children; Maria, Rosaleen, Kathleen Anne, Danny and Michael. And to her grandchildren; Aoife, Ultán, Daithí, Ruairí, Aoise, Dearbhla, Laoise, Pádraig, Óonagh, Daniel, Mikey and little Gracie.

One such book this year is ‘Women's Voices, Hopes for a New Ireland.' The book is published by Sinn Féin's Commission on the Future of Ireland and will launched at 1pm on 4th August in Áras Uí Chonghaile by Uachtarán Shinn Féin Mary Lou McDonald TD.The book is compiled and edited by Grace McDermott and Aoife Ferguson and is an innovative collection of contributions from 62 women across Ireland and the diaspora sharing their hopes for the future and a new Ireland.The women are drawn from all sections of society. They are writers, actors, musicians, community workers, political activists, health workers. They include Protestant voices. This book is a mixture of written contributions, poetry, song lyrics and artwork. Could not have a shower or bath. Wash clothes. Prepare food. Make tea or coffee whenever you want. Fill a water container for storage in the fridge for a cold drink. Have a fridge?That is the reality of life for almost two million women and children and men living in the Gaza Strip. Israel's genocidal policies has resulted in the deliberate and targeted destruction of water, sanitation and hygiene systems (in Gaza. It has created a humanitarian catastrophe. This is especially true for women who are pregnant or are menstruating. According to a recent Oxfam report, women cannot get the water they need to keep clean and hydrated.It reports that the extensive damage to water networks, treatment facilities, and sewage systems “has crushed water production, so it is a fraction of pre-October 2023 levels.” In addition, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has revealed that Gaza's water production has dropped to less than a quarter of what it was three years ago and that 89% of water plants and sewage facilities “have been destroyed or partially damaged.”For a family in the west it's a simple matter to turn the water tap on to access all you need. In Gaza average daily use of water per person has dropped from the minimum humanitarian standard of 15 litres per day to around three litres.Rubber Bullet injures Marwan BarghoutiRegular readers will know that I have written recently on several occasions about the imprisonment and torture of Palestinian prisoner Marwan Barghouti. Marwan, now aged 67, has been held in Israeli prisons for 24 years after a widely criticised show trial in 2002. He is a senior leader in Fatah and is viewed by Palestinians as their Nelson Mandela.Over the years he has endured significant brutality but the most recent occurred in Ganot prison several weeks ago when a prison guard entered his cell and shot him in the leg with a rubber bullet. During the decades of conflict in the North rubber and plastic bullets were frequently used by the RUC and British Army. They were an attempt to terrorise citizens. Seventeen people were killed by rubber and plastic bullets. Eight of these were children and all but one was from nationalist areas.However, the Israeli rubber bullets are of a significantly different design to those used here. Israel's rubber bullets are “steel covered with a thin rubber coat.” They cause more fatalities and life changing injuries.Marwan's son Arab Barghouti, said the family only learned about the incident from his father's lawyer and that Barghouti had not received medical treatment for the injury. Two weeks ago the Arab League called for an international commission of inquiry into what it said were "repeated assaults" on Barghouti. So support freedom for Marwan Barghouti. He was the Northern Executive's Lay Secretary from 1990 to 2003. His book is a detailed and critical assessment of the role of Methodism and I'm still reading it.I have a firm belief that all of us have a story to tell. My personal focus has been on republicans and working class people telling our story but the truth is the right and the need to tell our own story belongs to everyone. And the Methodists have a story worth telling. So well done David Gallagher.David will be taking part in Féile an Phobail on 1pm on the 31st July in St. Mary's University College on the Falls Road. Springhill HeroesWhen I was a wee buck growing up in Ballymurphy there was a river at the back of the houses across from our home place at the corner of Glenalina Road and Divismore Park. The river ran the length of our street and the length of Ballymurphy Road before exiting below the Whiterock Road and into the City Cemetery. From there it meanders down to and under the Falls Road beside the Bus Depot and onwards to the Bog Meadows. You can see it there to this day. The stretch which used to border our street was long ago captured and incarcerated in a pipe below ground.Before then it was one of our favourite places to play. The Ordinance Survey maps name this rivulet as the Ballymurphy Stream. I can't find its Irish name. It rises in the mountain and cuts under the Springfield Road beneath a very high arch just up from our street. It used to be at its widest at that point. Perfect for jumping. Swinging across on a rope. Falling in. Catching frogs. Plastic sandals were all the go. Perfect for walking on water. Tiocfaidh ár láIt does not feel as if 45 years have passed since the death on 5 May 1981 of Bobby Sands on hunger strike. Bobby's death and that of his nine comrades changed so much in our struggle and opened up so many new opportunities that it is rightly viewed as a tipping point in recent Irish history.On Sunday former hunger striker Pat Sheehan MLA gave a wonderful speech at Bobby's statue in Twinbrook. The courage and heroism of the ten men who died and those who took part in the hunger strike, and of Michael Gaughan and Frank Stagg, are a huge part of our republican history. But we should never lose sight of the fact that Bobby and his comrades in the H-Blocks and in Armagh Women's Prison were more than political prisoners. They were family members, friends, neighbours. Comrades. They were ordinary young men and women who enjoyed life. Free Marwan BargoutiFreedom struggles across the globe have their heroes. Nelson Mandela, Che Guevara, Bobby Sands and in Palestine, Marwan Bargouti .Last September a mural celebrating Marwan's leadership and resistance to Israeli occupation and the oppression of the Palestinian people,was unveiled at the international wall on Bóthár na bhFál. Two weeks ago at the Ard Fheis I met with Marwan's son Arab. Since then we have spoken by zoom. His family and those, like me, who believe he should be released are fearful for his life.

Standing at the crossroadsSinn Féin, but especially, the party in Belfast pulled out all of the stops at the weekend to ensure that the Ard Fheis was a huge success. The ICC Waterfront Hall was buzzing with republican voices from across our island and beyond talking about the big issues confronting all of us nationally and internationally. The number of young people attending and taking part in the debates was particularly encouraging.There were 167 Motions on the clár for discussion. They ranged across the cost of living crisis, housing, Irish unity, education, health, the climate crisis and our environment, rural Ireland, justice and human rights, and the fraught international situation.International SolidaritySinn Féin believes in international solidarity. Consequently, an important element of our annual Ard Fheis is the many international guests who travel to be with us. This year there were around 60 guests from the ANC in South Africa, EH Bildu in the Basque country, the ERC in Catalonia, from Australia, Kurdistan, France and other comrades.I was especially pleased to meet again with Arab Barghouti, from Ramallah in the west Bank and son of Marwan Barghouti who has been imprisoned for 24 years by Israel. The situation is Gaza continues to be appalling with scores of Palestinians being killed on an almost daily basis, and towns and villages in the west Bank regularly targeted by criminal Israeli gangs of settlers.Honouring Rita O'HareThe next time you go into Áras Uí Chonghaile on Bóthar na bhFál in Belfast go up to the first floor where there is a plaque dedicated to the work of Rita O'Hare, who played a huge part in securing the support of American Trade Unions for the Áras. Last Friday a bunch of us, her family and friends, got together to remember Rita and to unveil a James Connolly bust in her memory. It's a striking piece of art. It was created by the talented sculptor Steve Finney and Barry O'Neill of Lough Neagh Bronze. The bust was originally donated to the Moore St. Preservation Trust that is campaigning to save the 1916 Battlefield site in Dublin.Remembering Bobby SandsFinally, next Tuesday, 5 May, will be the anniversary of the death on hunger strike of Bobby Sands. He was the first of ten men to die during the six-month hunger strike in 1981.This weekend there will be a number of events to remember Bobby and his comrades and their contribution to the struggle for freedom.· At 9.30 am on Sunday the Annual Bobby Sands Walk will take place on Divis Mountain.· At the same time there will be a 12k freedom run meeting at the Bobby statue in Twinbrook.· At 2pm on Sunday there will be a commemoration and wreath laying at the Bobby Sands statue in Twinbrook.· And later that evening at 8pm the Annual Bobby Sands Lecture will take place in Andersonstown Social Club.

Then there was ‘Benches' the follow up campaign, which came from a placement team who went on to see their idea come to life across the country in the form of 65 benches to commemorate those still living, thanks to BHF. The work earned the team their first job at Saacthi's. Congratulations Lucy Norie & Hannah Underwood. That is an amazing achievement. Nothing is impossible indeed. We found out who really has got the biggest (meat) balls on Oxford St. We discovered that Franki loves pumping tonnes of magenta paint all over buildings in Germany for T-Mobile. We also talked about Western Edge Pictures - Franki's film production company and how hard it is to make movie posters with no budget. And what it's like to work for Mike Figgis in Venice making a live website, while hanging out with Salma Hayek.
