Video recording of this episode is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OcxwmDuUeU&ab_channel=UCD-UniversityCollegeDublin Henry Glassie is College Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, and has published widely in the fields of material culture and vernacular architecture. His contribution to the discipline of Irish Folklore and Ethnology has been exceptional. Having lived in Ballymenone, Co. Fermanagh, for almost a decade in the 1970s, Professor Glassie published a number of studies inspired by the community there, including All Silver and No Brass (1975), Passing the Time in Ballymenone (1982) and The Stars of Ballymenone (2006). These books are landmark works which have become classic texts for students of Folklore in Ireland and abroad, along with many other items on Professor Glassie's long list of publications. Henry has rendered invaluable service to our understanding of Irish popular tradition and vernacular culture, and he can truly be described as a towering figure in the study of Irish Folklore for more than half a century. Even in his retirement, he remains a staunch and committed friend to Ireland and to the people he worked with while carrying out fieldwork here. Henry has had a long and extremely positive relationship with UCD since the establishment of the Department of Irish Folklore in the university in the early 1970s. With the approach of the fiftieth anniversary of his first major publication on Irish Folklore, All Silver and No Brass, it was deemed especially appropriate for the University to take the opportunity to honour Professor Glassie, and on Wednesday 21 May 2025, Henry was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from UCD, in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the growing area of Irish Studies in general, and to the field of Irish Folklore and Ethnology in particular. It was a great honour and personal privilege for me to sit and 'Pass the Time' with Henry, and over the course of ninety minutes we explored his background, interests, intellectual life, and experiences of field work, as well as delving into the topics of place, creativity, art, meaning, identity, belonging and despair; invoking old friends such as Fred B. Kniffen, E. Estyn Evans, Michael J. Murphy, Seán Ó Súilleabháin, Ellen Cutler, Tommy Love, Michael Boyle, Peter Flanagan, and Hugh Nolan as we trooped our way homewards. My thanks to all my colleagues at the NFC, as well as Susan Lysaght, Sandra Collins, Evelyn Flanagan, Andrew Fogarty, Veronica Aguilar Olmos, Dominic Martella for making this episode possible, and - most especially - to Henry and Pravina for their generosity, openness and kindness.

Lidl Ireland and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) are gearing up for an action-packed weekend of National Football League Finals across all four divisions, with Armagh, Kerry, Cork and Galway all battling it out at Croke Park, while Cavan, Wexford, Antrim and Fermanagh will target silverware in Drogheda and Clones. The scene is set for four intriguing ties – as captains and representatives from the eight competing teams gathered in Dublin today ahead of the weekend fixtures. The Divisions 1 and 2 Finals will form an exciting double-header at Croke Park next Saturday, April 12, with the Divisions 3 and 4 Finals to be contested next Sunday, April 13, in Drogheda and Clones respectively. In the Division 2 Final, which will precede the Division 1 showpiece, Cork and Galway will battle it out for silverware after claiming promotion. Relegated from Division 1 in 2024, Cork and Galway have bounced back to the top tier at the first attempt, and will now look to put the icing on a sweet-tasting Lidl National League cake by landing the trophy on offer. Armagh, Kerry, Cork and Galway were also the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship semi-finalists, proof positive that all four teams have carried last year's encouraging form into the 2025 season. So, will Kerry gain revenge on Armagh after losing last year's Lidl NFL Division 1 Final, and move ahead of Cork in the all-time roll of honour with a 13th Division 1 title? Or will Armagh get the better of the Kingdom again at Croke Park to claim their second crown? All will be revealed, as Galway target a first Division 2 title win since 2014, while Cork eye second tier glory for the first time since 2003. Galway captain Katie Geraghty was in attendance at the LIDL National League Finals media day and she spoke to Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly. ==
The episode begins with a host setting the atmosphere for a spine-chilling story, highlighting the cold weather outside and inviting listeners to prepare for a tale titled "Devilstone." This narrative unfolds in Dublin, where the protagonist, Timothy Martin, leads a comfortable life thanks to a substantial inheritance. However, his tranquil existence is disrupted when he inherits an abandoned property in County Fermanagh, known as Devilstone, from a forgotten uncle.Timothy's initial reaction is nonchalant; he considers renting the property out but is met with a skeptical response from his solicitor, Ian Carney. Carney strangely advises against renting it to prospective tenants, raising curiosity and concern. Shortly after, a visitor named Mr. Stoker arrives, furious about having visited Devilstone with his wife. Stoker claims that the house is haunted, which Timothy dismisses as absurd, thinking it's merely an excuse to avoid the rental.Despite Everts, Timothy's loyal manservant, suggesting the hauntings might have a foundation, Timothy is determined to investigate Devilstone for himself. They travel to the estate, encountering an imposing, gloomy mansion that unsettles both of them and their dog, Kim. As they explore the property, strange occurrences and eerie sounds begin to surface, raising the tension. The narrative escalates with Timothy feeling someone's presence, witnessing strange footprints appearing in the mud, and experiencing physical manifestations of terror. Undeterred, he pushes forward, wanting to investigate further despite the creeping fear. However, they soon find themselves trapped in a room as doors mysteriously close, and a chilling voice ominously warns them of impending danger. The ghostly figure of Jason O'Flynn, Timothy's ancestor who had died tragically on the very grounds, appears, confirming that the house is indeed haunted. The suspense builds as Timothy learns about the tragic backstory of Jason O'Flynn, who cursed the place after the demise of his wife. This curse has seemingly trapped his spirit within the house, and the connection to the recent events becomes clear. Timothy resolves to uncover more about the mystery shrouding the estate. The investigation moves forward, but the discoveries lead to a climactic moment when Timothy and Everts uncover a trapdoor concealing the preserved body of Jason O'Flynn himself. This revelation ultimately leads to the lifting of the curse, allowing the ghost to finally rest in peace. The episode closes with a sense of foreboding yet comfort, as the host reflects on the themes of fear and gratitude, urging listeners to find solace in their lives as they drift off to sleep.Overall, the episode is a rich blend of suspense, historical intrigue, and supernatural elements, examining themes of legacy, fear, and confronting the unknown. With careful narrative pacing and intriguing character development, it culminates in a resolved mystery that lingers in the mind of the audience.

While we're into February and slowly the season is beginning to come to life, you may not have much of a chance to wet a line in the coming weeks so have you thought about building your own fly rod? Brian Martin is a Fermanagh angler based in Galway who last year set himself the goal of doing just that and as he explains on this week's Ireland on the Fly, it's actually not that difficult and he encourages any fly angler to give it a try. If you've been dreaming of a specific rod for your own fly fishing needs, then maybe you won't have to shell out a fortune for a branded one and could actually build one yourself. Plus, Brian also tells us about his love of dry fly fishing and the incredible migratory lake brown trout that he targets during the summer months. Mark Carruthers is joined by David McCann, Enda McClafferty and David Young to assess another three Westminster constituencies.
Sika (cervus nippon) is a mid-sized deer that was introduced to Ireland in the 1860s to the Powerscourt Estate. Soon after that, it started spreading across Ireland. Today, the main concentrations of sika are in Kerry, Wicklow, Tyrone and Fermanagh. More recently, it has also been found in Waterford, Galway, Limerick, and Wexford. The National Biodiversity Data Centre in Ireland lists sika as an invasive species. Despite that, it's afforded protection under the Wildlife Act. It is prized by hunters as a game species and a source of excellent quality venison on the one hand, and hated by foresters and environmentalists for the damage to forestry and biodiversity on the other.Sika is present on the entire European continent and, although not as widespread as in Ireland, it is also causing similar problems. This is reflected in the recent move by the European Commission to launch consultations to put sika on the Invasive Alien Species (IAS) list across the Union. This poses the obvious question: what does it mean for the Irish population of sika if the EC makes such a decision? Will or should it be allowed continuous protection with open and closed hunting seasons? Or should it be reduced to the status of vermin and be eradicated across the country? To discuss the potential future of sika deer in Ireland and present a whole spectrum of views about this species, and invasive species more generally, I spoke with four expert guests presenting different views on the subject. By listening to this episode you will hear from Professor Jaimie T.A. Dick who specialises in Invasion Ecology, Eoghan Daltun an award-winning author who has spent last 15 years regenerating an Irish Atlantic rainforest, Damien Hannigan a Government Appointee to the Irish Deer Management Forum and Public Relations Officer at the Irish Deer Commission, and Professor of Wildlife Restoration Ecology, Adam T. Ireland's first all-island summit for women who founded their own businesses takes place in Co Fermanagh on May 20th-21st. 'SheVentures' will pull together over 200 women founders, investors, entrepreneurs, and their supporters in Ireland, say Awaken Hub, the organisers of the event. The summit offers "unparalleled access to inspiring Irish and international women leaders, including some who have never spoken at an Irish event before," says Awaken Hub chairperson, Mary McKenna. Speakers include Silicon Valley's Ann Hiatt who worked directly for Amazon's Jeff Bezos; Lorna Conn, CEO of Cpl, and entrepreneurs' champion; and Samantha Barry, Global Editorial Director for the Americas at Glamour magazine. Women Founders Summit Mary McKenna says SheVentures offers an "opportunity to hang-out with your tribe of women founders and investors in a friendly and informal setting for a couple of days. But get yourself investor-ready," she advises. "You might even bag an angel investor or two!" The summit is being held in the breathtaking and cosy location of Lusty Beg Island, Fermanagh. Sponsored cabins on the premises will offer Master Classes and discussions on challenging themes like Investment, Sustainability, US Market Entry, Sales, Storytelling and Marketing, and Commercialisation. McKenna says these are an ideal chance to learn from experts at first hand. "She Ventures is not just about offering great speakers. It's about giving participants access to these speakers and experts for informal chats and discussions throughout the two days. It's also about extending women founders' networks of key players, contacts, and investors as they grow their business." The summit is being supported and sponsored by the Shared Island Initiative. On this episode of the Irish History Show we looked at the Plantation of Ulster. The Plantation was the colonisation of Ireland's northern province of Ulster by people from Britain during the reign of James VI and I. The official plantation began in 1609 in six of Ulster's nine counties, Donegal, Coleraine, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Armagh and Cavan. Lands in counties Antrim, Down and Monaghan were privately planted with Crown support. We have recently started a Patreon page for The Irish Story website and The Irish History Show. Just over forty years have passed since Mayo won All-Ireland honours at Under 21 level for the third time, when they beat Derry in a replayed final played at Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh. It was the first ever All-Ireland final to be played north of the border, with the Mayo team featuring within its ranks a number of players who would go on to become household names for the county at Senior level in the years that followed. In this podcast episode, Rob and John sit down with two members of that All-Ireland winning Mayo team, captain Eddie Gibbons from The Neale and John Finn of Mayo Gaels, to reminisce on the 1983 campaign. They chat about memorable incidents in the matches the lads played in on the way to that historic replayed decider in Irvinestown and they discuss how the very competitive schools football scene at that time was instrumental in ensuring that Mayo were in a position to push for All-Ireland honours at U21 level. They also consider the legacy of the 1983 U21 All-Ireland success and how it laid the foundations for Mayo's return to prominence at Senior level later that decade and in the years since then.
