This episode explores An Officer and a Spy (J'accuse in French), Roman Polanski's 2019 film about the Dreyfus Affair in France. The Dreyfus Affair is one of most significant events in late 19th/early 20th century, an event whose implications reverberated for decades in France and around the world. The Dreyfus Affair centered around the military trial of Captain Alfred Dreyfus on charges of treason. Wrongly convicted based on secret evidence and false information, Dreyfus's case would become a cause célèbres and synonymous with a miscarriage of justice. It also exposed and exacerbated tensions within French society while underscoring deep and pervasive levels of antisemitism. Based on Robert Harris's 2013 novel of the same name, An Officer and a Spy focuses on the role of George Picquart, the military officer who helps uncover the truth behind Dreyfus's wrongful conviction, and Picquart's complex relationship with Dreyfus himself. Hewing closely to historical fact, the film highlights critical issues around law, truth, and justice, at the heart of the Dreyfus affair and why it remains so relevant today. Just in time for Spinal Tap 2: Ed Begley Jr. is our very first TMEP Show guest who actually appeared in "This Is Spinal Tap." In Ed's memorable scene, he shows up as Spinal Tap's original drummer John “Stumpy" Pepys looking like Buddy Holly behind the kit -- instant classic. Begley tells us about the time Harry Nilsson surprised him with a dinner invitation at John and Yoko's place at The Dakota; smoking a J with Charles Manson; and, of course, how filming a “test scene” that actually ended up getting use in the movie led to him being enshired in Spinal Tap lore. In this short VIDEO, Ed describes that homecooked meal with the Lennons. Why do most speeches vanish from memory within hours, while others echo for decades and even shape the course of history? In this episode, Carl welcomes author, historian, and Founder & CEO of Speaking With Purpose, Robert Begley, to uncover what truly makes a message unforgettable. Drawing from his book Voices of Reason: Lessons for Liberty's Leaders, Robert shares why timeless speeches—from Patrick Henry's cry for liberty, to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, to Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream—continue to move us long after they were delivered. These masters of communication understood not just what to say, but how to say it in a way that resonates with hearts and minds. This episode goes beyond public speaking tips—it's about connecting with people on a deeper level, whether you're addressing a stadium, leading a team meeting, or having a heartfelt one-on-one conversation. By applying these lessons, you can transform your words into sparks that motivate, persuade, and live on.
Very COO Jessica Begley shares her experience taking on Marketing responsibility for the first time and the power of delivering radical honesty to her new team. "You're the experts, not me." She understands her team can see the difference in leadership styles, just as faux plants differ from actual plants. Plant people know seasons can change, and you have to meet people where they are. Walking Central Park in New York City every day, Jessica has solidified a new leadership principle: "Leaders who show up when the cherry blossoms are out and the sun is shining, every leader can do that. Exceptional leaders show up whey it is icy or when it is blazing hot." She's ready to embrace AI, which is fundamentally changing the power dynamic between employers and employees. She isn't about to apologize for evolving. She will apologize for staying stagnant. "Disruption is not disloyalty."

In a candid interview, Ian Begley of SNY provides a no-nonsense look at the New York Knicks' ongoing coaching search and roster moves. Money gifted with good intentions can lead to devastating financial consequences when long-term care becomes necessary. This eye-opening discussion between Elder Law attorneys Greg McIntyre and Brenton Begley tackles one of the most misunderstood areas of senior planning: how well-meaning asset transfers can backfire when seeking Medicaid and special assistance benefits. The conversation cuts through common misconceptions, particularly the damaging belief that the federal gift tax exemption (currently $19,000 per person annually) provides a "free pass" for Medicaid eligibility. As the attorneys clarify, these systems operate under completely different rules, and conflating them can lead to benefit denials precisely when you need care most. They break down the dreaded "look-back period" - that window of time where every financial gift or property transfer comes under scrutiny and potentially triggers penalties that delay essential benefits.Beyond just identifying pitfalls, McIntyre and Begley outline strategic approaches that actually work within the rules. From specialized deeds that protect property without triggering penalties to legally-sound asset protection strategies, they demonstrate that with proper planning, families can preserve their life savings while still accessing critical care benefits. Their expertise reveals the reward in finding that balance between asset protection and benefit eligibility - ensuring seniors can receive necessary care without sacrificing everything they've built.Whether you're planning ahead or facing an immediate care crisis, this conversation offers crucial guidance for navigating the complex maze of long-term care benefits. The attorneys' closing offer of complimentary consultations underscores their commitment to helping families protect what matters most while securing the care they deserve. Last night, The Athletic reported that the Nuggets have significant interest in acquiring Zach LaVine. I remember reading a report 3 or 4 years ago about the Nuggets having interest in him then, but they didn't want to part with Michael Porter Jr. at the time. Now it appears that their stance has changed and they could be open to making this swap happen. I go over multiple frameworks of what a trade could look like and preview the Nuggets' long-term payroll if they bring in a third maximum player. 0:00 Intro 0:28 Nuggets payroll structures and their trade restrictions as an apron team 1:39 The simplest Zach LaVine trade framework 2:11 How it would impact their payroll + how it could also apply to Brandon Ingram 3:15 How LaVine's trade bonus could make the deal bigger 5:11 How the Nuggets can make this work through the end of next season 6:27 Why it might not be teneble beyond 2026. 7:02 The case for keeping Michael Porter Jr. 8:30 Why I like it a little more for the Bulls The Athletic report: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6002502/2024/12/17/zach-lavine-trade-rumors-nuggets/Begley's report: https://x.com/IanBegley/status/1869202861634318632 Please subscribe and share if you enjoyed this. In this episode of the Astonishing Healthcare podcast, Justin Venneri sits down with Kristen Begley, PharmD, Chief Commercial Officer, and Michael Miele, FSA, MAAA, Senior Vice President of Insured Services, for a discussion about some of the finer points of pharmacy benefit management (PBM) procurement and pharmacy program cost evaluation, including how misaligned incentives can drive costs higher than they should be for plan sponsors. They delve into the misleading nature of focusing on unit costs and high rebates and advocate for a per member per month (PMPM) model to gain a clearer picture of true costs and hold PBMs accountable.Kristin and Mike suggest ways to update and improve legacy PBM evaluation methods, encouraging stakeholders to more carefully consider everything from the questionnaires leveraged to screen potential PBM partners to the true value of clinical programs for utilization management - such as prior authorization - and the actual number of units used to forecast spending.Related PMPM Content:AH010 - The Power of PMPM: Holding PBMs Accountable for Total Drug Spend, with Kristin Begley, PharmDPMPM - Is It the Best Way to Measure or Track Anything?PBM Procurement: A PMPM Guide for Plans Sponsors eBookVisit Capital Rx Insights for this episode's transcript and additional content!
