On Monday's Morning Focus, Alan spoke about a sport that rarely, if ever, gains any coverage! Rounders is one of the four official GAA sports included in the original GAA charter back in 1884 along with Gaelic Football, Hurling and Handball. However, despite it being included in the original GAA charter, Rounders hasn't gained as much in popularity or coverage as the other three sports. To discuss this further, Alan Morrisey was joined by Michael Sheahan, Development officer for GAA Rounders in Munster.

On this week's podcast, Sinead and Gavin toast the extraordinary work of Jim Gavin and his Football Rules Committee, which has successfully saved Gaelic football. They discuss how the FRC pulled off the job, and where it stands among other ingenious rule changes in other sports. They then make the point that if Gaelic football can be saved, then anything is possible: what lessons can the government learn from the FRC in tackling the housing crisis, or regulating Big Tech? And, if the GAA can fix Gaelic football in less than a year, why can't they accelerate the process of integration?Get in touch - sinead@thejournal.ie and gavincooney@the42.ie Hosted on Acast. On William Hill's The Square Ball this week, Dave and Ashling were joined by none other than Galway's much-beloved, Cyril Farrell. Farrell discusses how he first made his mark as a coach and manager, most famously leading the Galway senior hurling team to three All-Ireland titles in the 1980s (1980, 1987, and 1988), a golden era for the county.

There's very little left to say about Chrissy McKaigue that hasn't already been said. After his retirement from inter-county football last year at the age of 35, he left with two Ulster titles, an All-Star and league medals from all four divisions, a feat that nobody else in Gaelic football has achieved. If you were a forward playing Derry and say McKaigue coming your way, you knew you were in for a tough afternoon. Irish Sailor Tom Dolan from Co. Meath has carved a most unexpected career for himself on the high seas. Winner of the 2024 Solitaire du Figaro Paprec, Tom sailed himself into the history books as the first Irish sailor and only the third non-French competitor to win this prestigious race in its fifty five year history, cementing his position and reputation as a world class sailor. He subsequently was awarded Irish Sailor of the year in February of this year for the second time. An unlikely career for a man who grew up on a farm in Co. Meath where Gaelic Football was the sport of choice and sailing was something he watched on TV dreaming of one day sailing the high seas. But dreams do come true and for Tom, although it was an unconventional career path and to say the least a hard graft learning all the skills, insights and intricacies of sailing he earned his stripes from the ground up. Relentless in his pursuit of excellence, his grit, determination and resilience to embrace his passion for sailing saw him follow his heart and love of the sport to France over a decade ago. Immersing himself in one of the world's most competitive sailing environments it provide the perfect playground for Tom to flourish, hone his craft and gain vast experience to become one of the best off-shore sailors in the world. Known as 'The Flying Irishman,' Tom's journey has been anything but smooth sailing. In this episode, he shares the highs and lows of his career, offering insight into the technical and mental demands of elite level racing, the toll of sleep deprivation and hallucinations at sea, and the vital role of a strong support team. His story is not just one of overcoming odds, but of staying true to a passion, trusting the process and proving that with commitment and belief, even the wildest dreams can become reality.

The GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship starts this weekend. It's one of the biggest competitions in all of Irish sport. The All-Ireland football final has traditionally been among the top five most-watched TV broadcasts of the year. But last year, the hurling final outstripped it by almost 150,000 viewers. That's because GAA football has had a problem that has been growing for more than 10 years; even its most ardent fans say the game has become boring.Too defensive, too slow, too much hand passing, not enough flair.Former Dublin manager Jim Gavin was called in to fix football, to come up with a new set of rules that would revitalise the game before it was too late. And he did. So are they working?Irish Times sports writer Malachy Clerkin explains why the greatest shake-up in the history of GAA football was so direly needed and how he sees them working.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Declan Conlon. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
