It's a rollicking good old Chicago love-fest when Kath's old pal and stage manager, Steve Sweeney, joins Jan and Kath in person. We talk about Steve's health journey from scary to svelte, using food quality improvement and portion control as the ultimate medicine. We reminisce about Margie's Candies in Chicago, and Steve finally gets to tell HIS side of the story about how he helped an elderly woman with her Thanksgiving dilemma of a too-big turkey by (let's call it) re-homing it. A hilarious conversation with the cleverest of them all - listen in!

Politics in New Jersey is becoming must see. We're currently embroiled in the "Tammy Murphy versus Andy Kim" Senate primary that's getting nastier by the day. Soon we'll have the governor's race, where Steve Fulop, Ras Baraka, and Steve Sweeney have already joined, with more rumored to be eyeing the prize. It's a crazy time. That made me think: how much do WE here at NJITW know about the structure of NJ politics? I decided to put Nick and Mike (and myself) through some basic state focused civics quizzing for fun, to see where we're at knowledge-wise, and to encourage our listeners to go brush up on their related knowledge as well.Little did I know that at some point we would say a name that would set Bonadooch off on the most Bonadooch tirade this show has ever seen. Dom welcomes New Jersey State Senator Ed Durr of Gloucester County to discuss a bill passed by New Jersey lawmakers that will overhaul rules to get carry permits for firearms, making it nearly impossible for people to exercise their constitutional 2nd Amendment right. Durr explains his disappointment in such a bill, explaining why he finds the 2nd Amendment so important to our Democracy. Also, Giordano offers up a justification presented by Democrats, asking Durr whether he believes this move would make schools safer, which Durr disagrees with. Also, Durr tells us his thoughts on a potential future run for former opponent Sen. Steve Sweeney, and tells about a new fundraising effort he's launched. (Photo by Getty Images)
In today's second hour, Dom welcomes in viral Philadelphia YouTuber and Instagram personality Philly Captain back onto the Dom Giordano Program to address an article that popped up by the Philadelphia Citizen that argues that those who create what they deem ‘Trauma Porn' need to be held accountable. Philly Captain, who's mentioned and exposed in the article after appearing on the Dom Giordano Program in the past, explains why he makes the videos. Captain makes a great point, explaining that he believes the true victims are the innocent families and children who have to grow up with this as a regular part of their lives. Steve Sweeney was the longest-serving Senate President in New Jersey history. But even though he's now out of office, he hasn't withdrawn from politics and public policy. The newly formed Steve Sweeney Center for Public Policy at Rowan University will be tackling tough issues that would reduce costs and improve efficiency in New Jersey, including multi-year budgeting, consensus forecasting, pension reform and school regionalization. On this episode of In The Back Room, I sit down with comedian and actor Lenny Clarke for a free-wheeling discussion touching on his alcoholism, stroke, charity work, dramatic weight loss and more. Lenny features in the new Halloween Kills film, starring Michael Myers, realizing a childhood dream of his to be killed in a Hollywood horror film.Lenny and I start off by talking about some great American comedians who were friends and heroes of Lenny, from Stephen Wright to Steve Sweeney. Lenny was inspired by these guys to pursue a career in acting and comedy, but he's faced many challenges along the way, from a childhood growing up in poverty to an addiction to drugs and alcohol. He was also overweight, weighing 388lbs at his heaviest, and worked hard to eventually bring his weight down to 188lbs. His weight loss was actually spurred on by me and a discussion we had during a golf game, which we go into more detail about in this episode. Lenny also talks about the massive stroke that he had, which temporarily damaged his speech and affected his mobility. He was lucky enough to be saved by doctors at the Martha's Vineyard hospital, who had him airlifted to a specialist stroke unit.Throughout this episode, Lenny goes into detail about some of the charities that he works for and the causes he represents, which are all very near to his heart. He volunteers for the Globe Santa organization, which provides books, toys and games to children in underprivileged families and he is also participating in the Cape Cod Getaway bike ride to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that affects his two of his sisters.Stay tuned to the end to hear how Lenny helped to boost Joe Rogan's career, and you can also find links to support Lenny's charities in the show notes.Timestamps[01:40] Where should I retire?[04:14] Lenny Clarke on the Jimmy Kimmel show [05:35] Lenny Clarke on Halloween Kills[08:20] Bostonian comedian Stephen Wright[10:02] A clip of comedian Steve Sweeney[13:33] Lenny's alcoholism[15:45] Lenny and I discuss his charity work with Globe Santa [25:50] Lenny's fathers sickness[32:00] When Lenny had a stroke[35:25] Bob and Lenny on being a little portly[42:40] Joe Rogan's early career and how it was boosted by Lenny [45:28] Being friends with Joe RoganLinksLenny Clarke on IMDb Globe SantaLenny's MS fundraiser Alcoholics AnonymousIn The Back Room website

In this episode Heather talks to Theresa Zimmerman Fuller and Adam Sheridan from NJ 21 United about the recent Sweeney backed Path To Progress Commission. Is this a cure all as Sweeney says or is it just more of the same attacks on public workers and unions we have come to expect from Steve Sweeney and the Norcross Dems?
If you ask a random reader to name foundational women horror writers, you might get two or three names. Mary Shelley. Shirley Jackson. Maybe Daphne du Maurier or Anne Rice. But as Lisa Kroger and Melanie R. Anderson point out in their new book, Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror & Speculative Fiction, if that's where our knowledge begins and ends, we're missing out on a lot. Eli Colter, who wrote, amongst other things, weird westerns. C.L. Moore who helped introduce swashbuckling rebels into the sci-fi canon. Angela Carter's re-imagining of folk tales. There are also works of literary fiction we might not put in the horror genre, like Toni Morrison's Beloved. Kroger and Anderson give readers a primer on women writers whose work you may have missed, and puts it in a historical context. You can learn about the origins of the gothic story, the influence of spiritualism in writing and pop culture, how writers supported their families with their short works, a bit about pulp magazines like Weird Tales, and even how one writer put together a group of mystics (or mystic-adjacents) to help guard the coast of England during World War II. But beware – Monster, She Wrote is likely to add considerable height to your reading pile. A note about the sound quality – we tried to do this interview with Skype, but it kept cutting out. So we had to do it the old fashioned way, the way I started recording interviews in the last century, on speaker phone with a recorder. I've sweetened it up a bit through some plug-in magic, but you'll notice the switch a few minutes in. Monster, She Wrote is out now from Quirk Books and you can find out more about it at www.quirkbooks.com or wherever you get wonderful books. You can also keep track of Lisa Kroger's work at www.lisakroger.com and Melanie R. Anderson at www.melanieranderson.com. The Know Fear Podcast is at www.knowfearcast.com, and on Twitter under @knowfearcast. This week's featured track from the new Best of Boston Stand-Up, Volume 1. Boston has a long and fine tradition of stand-up comedy, and this album is a good introduction to some of the funniest comedians you can see regularly around town. Veterans like Steve Sweeney, Don Gavin, Tony V., Kenny Rogerson, and Jimmy Dunn; more recent headliners like Kelly MacFarland, Will Noonan, Dan Crohn, Christine Hurley, and Corey Rodrigues, who you are about to hear. This is a bit about Rodrigues going out for a day at the beach, and the reaction he got when he tried to put on sunscreen. I won't give away too much, but Rodrigues is black, and the audience at this taping was mostly white. That allowed Rodrigues to have a little fun with their expectations partway through the story. Look for more of Rodrigues's stuff on the Dry Bar Comedy YouTube channel, and find his album, My Turn, on Apple Music and Google Play. His Web site is www.coreyrodrigues.com.
Sue Costello is someone I saw early on in Boston, specifically playing a show organized by Jimmy Tingle that featured Costello, Patrice Oneal, and Steve Sweeney. She has always been tough, and she wears her Dorchester roots with pride. We got into some thorny topics here, including pervasive sexism in the entertainment industry and her dealings with CBS as the Les Moonves scandal was breaking. She has survived sexism in comedy and in the television industry and come out of it trying to find a way to get people to communicate more productively, to get to a truth. As she says, the empaths need to grow some balls, because the bullies are winning. That's part of the philosophy behind her new talk show pilot, Simmah Down with Sue Costello. She wants people to be real about the ugly things in their lives and not be afraid to talk about them. The show is in a pilot stage now, but it's up on YouTube now. Watch it here: You can keep up to date on news from Costello at www.suecostello.com, and find her on Twitter and Facebook under Sue Costello and Instagram under iamsuecostello. She's also filming a new movie called Mow, which you can find on the social medias on @mowmovie. Our featured track this week is “Living Rock” from Rebecca Turner, from her upcoming album The New Wrong Way, out November 6. This will be Turner's third album, and her first since 2009's Slowpoke. Since then, she has continue to write and play, but family and work concerns kept her from finishing a new album. The New Wrong Way is a culmination of ten years of writing and tweaking the songs, which were recorded starting last winter. The featured track is the opening song from the album, a riffy roots-rock tune called “Living Rock.” Find out more about Rebecca Turner at https://rebeccaturner.net.
When Steve Sweeney was growing up in Boston, the last thing he expected to become was an entertainer. He rubbed elbows with career criminals in Charlestown but somehow wound up doing summertime productions of Shakespeare plays and seeing actors like Lawrence Olivier and Christopher Plummer. Acting then led to exposure to comedy, which later led to cocaine-induced psychosis, and eventually to working in jails and with at-risk youth. Steve talks with Marc about the journey to build his act and why he enjoys producing his own projects now, including his new movie Sweeney Killing Sweeney.
