Last week we discussed the MacDonald Triad, which is a set of three factors that may help predict behavior associated with serial offenses, such as serial murders.Todd Kohlhepp may not hit all three factors, however he was known to suffer from abuse in his childhood, poisoned his goldfish in bleach during an experiment, and was a bully at a very early age in school where he was involved in a very scary incident on the school bus. A few years later, after escaping his step-father and mother and going to live with his biological father, he would take a 14 year-old girl from her home and sexually assault her. This would earn him 14 years in prison, and at the age of 30 he was set free to go about his life and register as a sex offender. Todd is a man who thrives off attention, both positive and negative, and it almost seems like he will do anything to be in the spotlight, you know... Join us this week as Sarah tells the sordid tale of the Happy Face Killer otherwise known as Keith Jesperson. He was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada where his family life was less than desirable. Which may have helped him to check at least two of the three triggers in the Macdonald Triad. The Jesperson family then moved to the Evergreen State. After graduation, Jesperson started as a truck driver. His lifelong goal was to become a part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but he was rejected. Going back to what he knew, Jesperson headed back to the cab of an 18-wheeler. Being a long haul truck driver would aid him in his deviance and take him all over the country. Jesperson liked to confess to his crimes by writing to the press, signing off with a super creepy “happy face.” Investigators confirmed 8 victims, but Jesperson claimed to have killed upwards of 185 people. As for astrology, we talk a little about the less enjoyable traits of unevolved Aries. Upcoming this week, on Monday 4/18 Venus in Pisces will sextile Uranus in Taurus which will be a good day to buy a lotto ticket! On Tuesday 4/19 the Sun enters Taurus and the next 4 weeks will be more patient and productive. On Sunday 4/24 Mercury in Taurus will be square with Saturn in Aquarius, we recommend just staying home.

Ever wonder what makes an otherwise normal person into a serial killer? Well, that’s a question that has plagued psychologists for years. BUT, we do know a few contributing factors can be a history of abuse, previous trauma, past head injuries, AND… there’s also a set of 3 factors that can be predictive of whether or not someone becomes a serial killer – and it’s called… The Macdonald triad. The Macdonald triad was first proposed by psychiatrist J. M. Macdonald, who believed that these three things – first, cruelty to animals, second, an obsession with fire-setting, and lastly, persistent bedwetting, are linked to violent or homicidal behaviors later in life. The Macdonald triad has been present in many criminals and murders, including the well-known serial killer Ed Kemper. So next time little Johnny reaches for the matches after kicking the dog and wetting the bed… watch out…..you just might have a future serial killer on your hands. This has been the true crime irl murder minute…and I’m kelli berens brink reminding you to lock your doors people – bye bye TRUECRIMEIRL.COM --- SOURCES: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/shadow-boxing/201203/triad-evil --- MUSIC: Come Play with Me by Kevin MacLeod Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3526-come-play-with-me License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

57 years ago psychiatrist J.M. Macdonald wrote a paper published in The American Journal of Psychiatry entitled "The Threat to Kill," in which he proposed that there is a link between three childhood behaviors - persistent bed-wetting past the age of 5, an obsession with fire and fire-starting, and cruelty to animals - and violent behavior, most notably homicidal and sexually predatory behavior. This formula for criminal behavior has come to be known as The Macdonald Triad, and while the theory is still debated by criminologists and criminal psychologists to this day, statistics over time have tended to bear out its worth. This is particularly true of the characteristic of animal cruelty. Time and again studies have shown a distinct tie between those who torture and/or kill animals and behaviors of sexual deviancy, serial murder and - as discussed in this episode - terrorism. One of the leaders in the charge to convince law enforcement to take seriously the extensive data on animal cruelty as it pertains to criminal acts against humans has been John Thompson, currently the e Executive Director of the National Animal Care & Control Association. Melissa shares this incredible man's story - how a police professional who never thought of animal abuse as anything other than an "animal control" issue came to realize how the treatment of animals could help predict future behavior through his own relationship with a beloved dog he fell in love with completely by accident. Melissa then shifts to a recent story out of Kokomo Indiana, where 19 year-old Krystal Scott, who is alleged to have tortured and killed numerous dogs, cats and reptiles and posted her deeds on social media, was caught because of the diligent work of some crafty Internet crime fighters some 1,800 miles away in Boise Idaho. Listen in for a compelling discussion on the importance of stopping and apprehending animal abusers early - and how "citizen sleuths" can work as a community to aid law enforcement in making that possible.
On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we researched some true crime for you. We hit you with the case of Richard Chase—the Vampire of Sacramento. I know that title sounds lame, but this guy was as twisted as it gets. We’re talking making smoothies out of neighbor’s pets in a bloody blender. Injecting himself with rabbit’s blood. Obsession over Nazi UFOs. Several murders, cannibalism, and even drinking a baby’s own blood through a straw made of his own penis. Yeah. That kind of twisted. So, everyone says that Richard Chase was the picture perfect pre-serial killer. He checked all the boxes on a thing called the Macdonald Triad, which supposedly predicts your penchant to be a serial killer. He was an arsonist, he wet his bed late, he tortured and killed animals. He was also abused in a financially troubled household. He was very ill, mentally. As early as 18, his therapists said there was something deeply wrong with him. He would do things such as drop a dead cat at his mom’s feet and disembowel it to start drinking the blood. She, as you do, would just walk away. There was so much writing on so many walls. He was arrested for being naked and covered in blood and carrying organs. He told a neighbor he killed his pet and ate it. The guy was sick. Then, his murders started once pets weren’t big enough. He used a .22 for most of his victims, and would shoot them only to mangle them with knives and have sex with the corpses. He’d also take organs and blood back home to eat and drink and make smoothies with. After a horrible mass killing a mother, her son, her nephew, and a baby she was baby sitting, the manhunt was on. The FBI did a crazy accurate profile of him, and a former high school acquaintance gave a tip that finally got him arrested. His house, like his crime scenes, was a thing of pure horror. I’m not going to type it all here, so if you want more, give us a download and then listen, laugh, learn (and be repulsed…). Warning: This is a bad one. Episode five covers the science behind John Carpenter's 1978 Halloween. Is Halloween more dangerous than any other day of the year? What happened in the case of the Liske family murders? Could Michael's parents have been warned about his violent tendencies by the MacDonald Triad? Why does Michael wear a mask? Finally, would Michael really have been able to escape from Smith's Grove? Ask John Straffen, who escaped from a mental hospital for the criminally insane in England.

It's Heavy Hitter time with one of the lesser known but most brutal killers out there, Richard Chase AKA the Vampire of Sacramento! It's the most blood-soaked series yet as we cover his early life as a MacDonald Triad poster boy, his LSD-fueled trips to the rabbit farm, and his first murder.
