In the dynamic world of brand marketing, integrating the voices of consumers is not just a best practice — it's a necessity. In this episode, Jen Belcastro and Bill Southard explain why listening to the consumer is crucial for brand success. They discuss how understanding consumer behavior, preferences, and emotional connections can lead to more effective marketing campaigns and business strategies. Consumer research is an investment that can save companies from costly missteps and ensure they remain responsive to market changes and consumer needs. This ongoing and adaptive process is not a one-time effort but a continual practice that sustains brand relevance and drives continuous improvement. Jen advocates for starting small to win stakeholder buy-in for consumer research. This could involve initial stakeholder interviews to identify gaps and build a case for wider research, demonstrating the value through incremental insights. Key Takeaways Putting people at the heart of marketing strategies helps to build strong emotional connections with the brand. Identifying the correct target audience is crucial; often, companies have assumptions that may not be accurate. Consumer research, even on a small scale, can reveal vital insights that lead to better product and marketing decisions. Tracking brand performance and consumer behavior year-round is essential for ongoing success and adjustment in strategies. About the Guests Jen Belcastro is Founder & President of Escalate Strategies. She has spent over 20 years as a Consumer Insights & Brand Strategist at mid to large corporate agencies, serving clients from multiple verticals (B2C and B2B). She has a depth of experience in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies with a particular passion around helping clients grow winning brands that truly make the world a better place. After witnessing how typical big company challenges — high overhead, politics, bureaucracy, complex staffing models, and employee burnout — were to the direct detriment of the clients they claim to serve, she founded Escalate Strategies to offer clients direct access to her senior-level experience, entrepreneurial creativity, and laser focus on strategically impactful results. In response to changing demand, public relations agencies must continuously evolve their service offerings to meet client needs. They must adapt to new market dynamics and emerging trends to remain competitive. In this episode, Bill Southard explains that PR professionals are increasingly being seen as key strategic counselors to clients, rather than just media relations experts. Clients today want to work with a partner that helps them build their business, which includes enhancing their corporate reputation but also supporting sales and growth. Bill argues that PR firms need to position themselves as strategic partners, capable of providing a range of services beyond traditional media relations. The convergence of traditional PR functions with digital marketing presents a unique opportunity for agencies to expand their service offerings and drive business growth for clients. By offering expertise in new areas, agencies can deliver comprehensive solutions that directly impact a client's bottom line. This strategic approach not only enhances the value proposition for clients but also enables agencies to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving industry landscape. Agencies can expand their capabilities either through internal expertise or strategic partnerships with external providers. This flexibility allows them to offer a comprehensive suite of services, ranging from traditional PR and media relations to product development, research, product sourcing, social media, influencer marketing, digital advertising, e-commerce optimization, including Amazon and beyond. By embracing a holistic approach to communications and brand building, PR professionals can cultivate long-term relationships with clients and position themselves as indispensable partners in driving sustainable business success. Key Takeaways PR agencies can be strategic business partners, focused on driving sales and business growth for clients. Understanding business goals and aligning PR strategies to contribute to overall business objectives is crucial for agency success. Expanding service offerings, such as Amazon optimization and paid digital campaigns, enhances agency capabilities in supporting client needs. Building brand reputation, awareness, and trust through PR efforts is essential for sustainable business success in the long run. Once again the prominent leader in the mental health field, Dr. Marvin J. Southard, joined the Podcast program as a guest for the fourth time. Continuing the theme of divisiveness in the United States society and how it has impacted much of pubic and private lives, Dr. Southard reflects on the recent passage of the controversial political Proposition 1, in the recent California elections. He is looking through the lens of divisiveness in seeing a model cure as many conservative and progressive voters came together to try and defeat the proposed law. It narrowly passed by a slim margin of over 50%, and yet left a legacy of how disparate groups can agree on a common cause. Listen to Dr. Southard discuss the parts of the Proposition and its way of redesigning the California mental health system. Then find some optimism for the future with the possibility of a bridge over our troubled divisiveness.

A military historian walks into a company and transforms their customer engagement strategy to increase revenue and retention. While this might sound like the start of a very strange joke, it's a true story. When searching for frameworks on how to better engage your customers with empathy, look no further than my guest today, John Southard. Backed by more than 10 years of research built into his book, Defend and Befriend: The US Marine Corps and Combined Action Platoons in Vietnam, John has transformed the lessons from his historical research into a simple and proven empathy framework that companies can leverage to better understand customer needs - and we discuss that framework today, as well as examples each stage in action. We discuss why some leaders view the customer as the enemy and how that's hurting their growth, why simply responding to customer surveys is not the way to build engagement, and how your hiring decisions impact customer retention and engagement in ways you may not realize. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Exposure to groups other than yourself is the gateway to empathy. Getting into conversation is the first step to breaking false assumptions and realizing that both sides are human. A recent study shows that a lack of empathy from brands to consumers loses companies money, to the tune of $300M, every year.Cultivating communities and relationships with customers allows you to get feedback from them directly and build trust with those customers. When trying to find your differentiator - start with what your customers need, both overtly and covertly. It takes time, but the ROI is worth it and sustainable in the long term. "What unfolded is…the greatest unknown story of empathy, because these Marines show up and realize quickly, we have to live here, we have to abide by their rules, we have to understand their culture…because our personal survival literally depends on it. They lived a day in the life of these villagers to gain their respect." — John Southard Episode References: The Empathy Edge podcast, Kara Goldin, On Undaunted LeadershipThe Empathy Edge podcast, Sandy Thompson, How to Make People Fall in Love with Your BrandBrand Story Breakthrough course to help you craft a clear, compelling brand story - includes weekly office hours with Maria!About John Southard, Customer Engagement Expert, Speaker, AuthorJohn has a Ph.D. in U.S. Military History and is an author, speaker, and expert in customer engagement and empathetic leadership. Today's guest is an occupational therapy masters student who has already made waves by applying her OT lens in a unique way. Inspired by a life full of nature and travel with her family as well as her siblings who have disabilities, Ashlyn Southard recognized the lack of accessibility in the national parks system and wanted to do something about it. In today's episode, she's sharing how she landed a paid internship working at Grand Teton, the resources she created both for families visiting and for staff to be more informed on accessibility, and how therapists can offer support to families specific to their vacations. Ashlyn's passion for bringing more awareness and accessibility into the national parks is something that is so needed. I can't wait to see what Ashlyn contributes to the nature-based therapy space in the future and hope that her work in the national parks system lives on. We'll discuss: The nonprofit process I'm starting to help fund and support children attending nature-based therapy services How Ashlyn's siblings with intellectual developmental disabilities and her family's affinity for travel (particularly to national parks) influenced her interest in nature-based therapy How Ashlyn pitched her OT services to the National Park Service and got a job working for the Grand Teton Association How she helped prepare parents for the sensory experiences to expect when visiting the park with their kids as well as learning opportunities she created for kids Barriers that parks and outdoor spaces have when it comes to disabilities and the environment How therapists can support families with children who have special needs that are going on vacation/interacting with nature Ashlyn's passion for sibling support, and the importance of groups and community in this work Resources from this episode: Connect with Ashlyn on LinkedIn Are you a pediatric therapist interested in taking your work with children out into nature?
