Guest post by Mick Kiely, CEO of IAIAI Technologies Today, lessons from history remain profoundly relevant as we continue to debate the ethical use of intellectual property in AI training. The "Case of the Cathach" reminds us that the balance between protecting artists' rights and fostering innovation is not a modern issue, but a recurring one throughout history. Copyright Dispute in 6th Century Led to Battle of the Book The Cathach, one of Ireland's oldest surviving manuscripts, stands as a testament to the country's rich literary heritage. This Latin text contains the earliest known Irish copy of the Gallicanum Psalter, accompanied by unique rubrics that are the first of their kind in Western Europe. Despite its damaged state, the Cathach holds immense historical significance and is closely linked to St. Columba, whose influence extends beyond Ireland to Scotland and Continental Europe, contributing to Ireland's reputation as the "Land of Saints and Scholars." Bizarrely, this 6th-century sacred manuscript became the catalyst for one of history's earliest and bloodiest disputes over intellectual property. This conflict, often referred to as the Case of the Cathach of St. Columba, involved two prominent figures of early Irish Christianity: St. Columba (Colum Cille) and St. Finnian of Moville. The dispute escalated into a war that claimed thousands of lives. This historic event of AD 561, known as "The Battle of the Book", tells how a quarrel over a manuscript in a remote Irish monastery laid the groundwork for concepts that continue to shape our understanding of intellectual property rights today. The Sacred Manuscript and a Secret Copy Saint Finnian, revered for his wisdom and devotion, was the keeper of a treasured psalter, a sacred text painstakingly inscribed by hand. To Finnian, this manuscript was more than just a book; it was a spiritual artifact, a repository of divine knowledge, and an extension of his own stewardship over sacred writings. Saint Columba, equally passionate about spreading divine teachings, had been a student of Finnian. The Psalter of his former mentor held particular significance for Columba. His desire to possess and copy this sacred text became a deep obsession. This desire intensified when Columba traveled to Moville, where Finnian lived, to request permission to copy the Psalter. To his astonishment, Finnian flatly refused, despite Columba's persistence. Feeling wronged, Columba defied Finnian's refusal and secretly set about copying the Psalter. Under the cover of night, Columba worked tirelessly in the church where the manuscript was kept, painstakingly copying the sacred text. However, his efforts did not go unnoticed. A young man, witnessing the act, reported Columba to Finnian, claiming that a miraculous light had shone upon the manuscript as Columba copied it. Finnian was outraged and demanded that the copy be turned over to him, arguing that the copy was an extension of the original and thus his rightful property. Columba, on the other hand, argued that sacred texts belonged to everyone and should be freely shared for the greater good. King Diarmait's Judgment Unable to resolve their dispute, the two saints turned to "King Diarmait Mac Cerbhaill", the High King of Ireland, for arbitration. The court convened to hear impassioned arguments from both sides. The case presented a dilemma: should knowledge be treated as sacred property belonging to its creator, or as a communal resource for the benefit of all? Finnian continued to argue for the sanctity of the original text, asserting that the copy infringed on his rights as its custodian. Columba again countered, insisting that sacred knowledge should be free to spread, unburdened by claims of ownership. After careful deliberation, King Diarmait delivered his verdict in a poetic phrase that would resonate through history "To every cow belongs its calf; to every book belongs its copy." This judgment affirmed Finnian's claim, stating that the ...

The 107th Irish edition of IndieRe promises to be a special episode, featuring a lineup of new releases and interviews with emerging talents from the Irish music scene. Hosted by Patrick Domanico, the show kicks off with Larks, a music project released by Fiona O'Kane, a gifted multi-instrumentalist hailing from Belfast. Following O'Kane's segment is the first interview of the episode with Tommy Cullen, who introduces his solo album "Enjoy the Glow". Continuing the showcase, HousePlants, a duo comprising Bell X1's frontman Paul Noonan and renowned producer Daithí, presents their track "No Pushover." According to Noonan's interview with Hot Press, Paul says: "'No Pushover, lyrically, is the tale of an outsider, a wannabe insider. I was taken with a story about how Elon Musk and his brother like to talk about The Simulation Argument (that we're all in a simulation) in the hot tub, and thought – is this the ultimate inner sanctum??”. It is suggested to listen to this song pumping-up the volume of your speakers. Enjoy the second interview of this episode with the rock band Dominda (pronounced doh-mind-dah) offering insights into the origins of their band name. Dominda comprises Ruaidhrí Whelan, Stephen Curtis, Luke Cunningham, Sean Curtis, and Barry Lysaght, promising a diverse and dynamic sound. Wrapping up the show is the Dance/Electronic music project Disfreq, hailing directly from Moville, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Their track "This Is Just A Dream" serves as the perfect conclusion to the episode's eclectic lineup. 2023 will be a year that will live long in the memory of all connected with Na Rossa GAA club in Lettermacaward. Despite all the challenges of lack of numbers available to the club as a whole it hasn't stopped success being achieved on the pitch, like in 2023. Junior A Champions, and promotion sealed back to Division 2. I'm joined in this episode to reflect on a great year for Na Rossa by their manager Declan Bonner, captain Daniel Martin Melly and Felix Melly who was part of the backroom team. Lots discussed, including the memorable Junior A Championship final win over Moville, the league game which clinched promotion, and the dissapointing nature of the club's controversial exit from the Ulster Club Championship. Church History Part 11 Christianity Comes To Britain Today we will look at some of the leading figures in the growth of Christianity in Britain. ~ Ninian Ninian was the Bishop of Galloway in South West Scotland by the end of the 4th Century. He is known to have carried out extensive missionary work in South Scotland. Hence there are many churches named after him in that area. He was born about 360 and is widely regarded as being the first Gospel preacher in a part of Britain which was not under Roman rule. Touring widely away from Galloway, Ninian preached at various missions. Much of Celtic Christianity is thought to have formed from this man's ministry. Bede in Ecclesiastical History of England refers to him thus “For the southern Picts, who dwell on this side of those mountains, had, it is said, long before forsaken the errors of idolatry, and received the true faith by the preaching of Bishop Ninias, a most reverend and holy man of the British nation, who had been regularly instructed at Rome in the faith and mysteries of the truth;” ~ Patrick Patrick – (389-461) He was the Apostle to England and is perhaps the greatest name in Irish history. At 16, he was taken as a slave from West Britain to Ireland for 6 years, during which time he found God. Patrick escaped to France & trained in a monastery. Later, he returned to Britain and had a dream calling him to Ireland. Subsequently Patrick returned to Ireland as bishop in 432. From there, Patrick evangelised the majority of Ireland, founding many churches & monasteries. Few men have had such an impact on a nation. Many missionaries and mission trips later, he left Ireland to evangelise Britain & Europe. ~ Columba 521 Columba was born in Ireland in 521 and as a young man entered the Moville monastery and later ordained deacon. Columba left Ireland under dubious circumstances and he sailed north until he could no longer see Ireland. He landed at the Island of Iona, South West of Scotland, and founded the Iona monastery, a great centre of learning and missionary activity. It is known that he evangelised much of northern Scotland. Bede in Ecclesiastical History of England writes “Columba came into Britain in the ninth year of the reign of Bridius, who was the son of Meilochon, and the powerful king of the Pictish nation, and he converted that nation to the faith of Christ, by his preaching and example. Wherefore he also received of them the gift of the aforesaid island whereon to found a monastery” Most information comes from the Vita Columbae (i.e. "Life of Columba" ). ~ Aidan Aidan was born in Connaught, Ireland. He was educated at Leinster, later going into the Monastery of St David in Wales where he spent many years studying and researching. He later founded a monastery in Wexford, becoming its Bishop. Later responding to a call from the King, Aidan settled on Lindisfarne Island. From here, Aidan engaged in much missionary work and evangelised extensively! Bede in Ecclesiastical History of England relates to him thus: “Aidan's holiness of life wins from him a warm tribute of admiration. … a man of singular gentleness, piety, and moderation; having a zeal of God, but not fully according to knowledge; for he was wont to keep Easter Sunday according to the custom of his country …” Bede goes on to describe various miracles said to be done by Aidan. That's it for this time! Next time in our series HAHA, we will look at a new threat to the growth and well being of Christianity - Islam! Thanks for listening! Come back to Partakers, where every day there is something new to encourage your walk as a Christian in the 21st century. ~ Tap or click here to save this as an audio mp3 file

Topics covered : Tragic accident, trauma, grief. This week I speak to mother, wife and nurse Geraldine Mullan.Originally from Galway, Geraldine met John Mullan from Moville, Donegal in 2010. 2 years later they were married and lived a very happy life together with their two children Tomás and Amelia, until a devastating accident changed everything. On the 20th of August last year, a family day out ended in a nightmare when their car crashed into Lough Foyle.John (49), Tomás (14) and Amelia (6) tragically all lost their lives while Geraldine miraculously survived. In this conversation she talks about how she misses them every single day, the support from her family, friends and the local community and the ‘Mullan Hope Centre', which recently opened to honour the memory of her gorgeous family. This was an incredibly challenging conversation for Geraldine for obvious reasons, but her strength and composure are remarkable. Today we have an update from the Reblitz family in Moville. Their two school-age children attend Woodbury Central Schools. Their father Donny Reblitz is on the school Board. Their mother Stacey teaches at the elementary school. Today we learn that their son Jackson tested positive for COVID-19 and had some serious symptoms. For several weeks into the school year, the family had not been affected by the coronavirus, but recently, their son Jackson became ill and tested positive for the virus. Stacey says her son complained of a headache and came home from school and he soon became very ill.

I don't know what to say about this show other than it has left a small mark in my childhood memories. I remember when this show would play I would mentally want to avoid it, it felt boring, stale and dry but that was never the case this was all in my head. When I did manage to sit still and watch the show it was pleasant and enjoyable, whatever was left of my prejudgment of the show was gone. Today in modern times that effect has withered and I can now enjoy the show anew. So come and join me as we take to the streets of YTV land to hear the voice acting talents of Frankie Muniz (Malcom in the Middle).Welcome to Toon Along! I have a very special guest today ... my sister, Sonja Shea! Sonja is an autism mom, photographer, fiancé and an advocate for autism. She runs her own photography business and has a studio located in Moville, IA. Until recently she also worked as a server at a chain restaurant in Sioux City, IA, but decided to take a break from that and focus on her business and staying home more with her son. She is engaged to a wonderful man & father who loves both Thadius & her with all his heart and is always working his butt off to support them and make sure they have everything they need. Thadius is their amazing son who is 5 and just lights up their world every day. That doesn’t mean she doesn't get frustrated or angry at times...because trust her, she does lol, but there isn’t a day that goes by that she's not proud of him. ️ Raising a child with autism is something that nobody can train you for because every child is different. So Sonja and her fiance just do the best they can and they see where the day takes them! Sometimes they have good days. Sometimes they have bad days. To add to that...they also have an English Mastiff named “Zeus”, a chihuahua named “Babies”, a ferret named “Milo” and two fish lol. Sonja's life can get pretty hectic, but it’s her life and she loves it! :) Her hope by doing this podcast and sharing her experience with you is that it can help in some small way. Maybe you have a child with autism ... or you are unsure and are going through the doctors right now to find out? Maybe you have a family member/friend with an autistic child? Either way, she hopes this just helps explain it a little better for people who have trouble understanding. ️ If any of you ever have any questions about autism or where to get help, Sonja is always available to message on Facebook or email at sonjashea17@yahoo.com And check out her photography page Shea Photography for any of your family photo needs! Enjoy this insightful and beautiful conversation. You're really going to love this one! Follow me on social @sausha.davis or on saushadavis.com and let me know what you think of this episode!
Singer/songwriter Haven is nothing short of a pop powerhouse. Her young career kicked off by writing country tunes in the heart of country music, Nashville. Growing up in the 1,600-person town of Moville, Iowa, Haven decided to head to ‘music city' at age 12 – where her singing and songwriting talents were quickly recognized. A small-town girl with a big-time stage presence, Haven began touring the nation by age 15 with major country acts such as Thomas Rhett, Lady Antebellum, Toby Keith and Hunter Hayes. While touring the nation, Haven was exposed to the realm of pop music for the first time since leaving her small-town roots and ultimately fell in love with the genre. Instantly recognizing her talent, manager Brian Teefey (LH7 Management / Selena Gomez's step-dad), signed her and began to help guide Haven who has set out to re-define pop with her own artistic flare. The now 20-year old artist is set to debut her unique pop sound throughout 2019 and well into the new year. While Haven's music is planted in pop, her artistry is still guided by the story-driven lyrics and heart-melting melodies defined by her country roots. Haven recently released her debut pop track “Swimming In Your Feelings” – which upon release was included in Radio Disney's Top 10 Songs (ranking at #6 overall, right above Selena Gomez's freshly released hit ‘Lose You To Love Me'). Landan and Levi Paulsen found their way to Iowa City from Moville, Iowa. Two of the most Iowa good ol boys you will ever meet. Two of the best representatives of the Iowa Football program that walk the earth. Landan and Levi sit down to talk growing up as massive twins from a small town and what it was like to dominate high school sports. They talk about how they started their own businesses as high school kids and did everything from move furniture to bale hay to shovel driveways. Both go into detail about their personal and joint journeys at Iowa and how their time in the program molded them. We get into other topics as well like growing out their hair and then chopping it off for a cause, injuries and how tough being a D1 lineman can be on the body, and much more.

Rebroadcast of the long running radio program, "The Ave Maria Hour", a presentation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. www.AtonementFriars.org St. Columba - Patron of Derry, floods, bookbinders, poets, Ireland, Scotland. St. Columba 521-597, Born probaly in Donegal Ireland of royal descent he studied at Moville under St. Finnian then in Leinster at the monastery of Clonard under another St. Finnian. He was ordained before he was twenty-five and spent the next fifteen years preaching and setting up foundations at Derry, Durrow, and Kells. Possibly because of a family feud which resulted in the death of 3000 and for which he considered himself partly responsible he left Ireland at 42 and landed on the island of Iona off the coast of Scotland. There he built the monastery which was to become world famous. With SS Canice and Comgall he spread the gospel to the Picts; he also developed a monastic rule which many followed until the introduction of St. Benedicts. He died on Iona and is also known as Colm, Colum and Columcille. Feast day is June 9.
