#1 - Jack The RIPPER: Letter 'From Hell'

The AUX

In this premiere episode of Letter Rip, Zach dives into the 'From Hell' Letter written by Jack the Ripper. Here's some background on the infamous correspondence: On the night of October 15th, George Lusk—Chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee in London, a group of locals desperate to stop the brutal killings terrorizing their streets—received a letter that would go down as one of the most disturbing in criminal history. The writer claimed to be none other than Jack the Ripper. But this wasn't just another hoax or attention-seeking note. It came in a small box. Inside? Half a human kidney, preserved in wine. Many believe it belonged to Catherine Eddowes, the Ripper's fourth victim. According to the letter, the killer had already fried and eaten the other half. It was a message soaked in gore, mockery, and madness—and it brought the fear in Whitechapel to a whole new level. LETTER RIP LINKS:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/letterrippod/TikTok: https://bit.ly/43aDXfPYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@LetterRipPodNewsletter (DFL): https://therealzachwrites.substack.com/

This episode isn't just about my experience; it's also about the reality of stalking, the dangers of obsession, and the importance of taking threats seriously. Or the manner in which behavioral patterns exhibited by criminals can serve as crucial evidence that leads investigators to the perpetrator's doorstep? In today's episode, we are delighted to have the privilege of hosting Professor David Canter, a globally renowned applied social psychologist and the pioneering figure behind the field of investigative psychology. This episode promises a deep dive into the mind of a criminal, the psychology behind some of the world's most notorious cases. So, grab a pen, your notebook and follow Professor David Canter through the dark alleys of the minds of serial offenders as he sheds light on how their behavior is mapped and tracked. We'll go back in time to the streets of London as we examine famous cases such as Jack the Ripper, and travel back to the 1980s to learn about Operation Hart, the Metropolitan Police's investigation into the infamous 'Railway Rapist', which Professor Canter played a key role in solving. We will delve into the heart of criminal behavior as we learn about Quantico and the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, and the truth about criminal profiling. We'll also talk about his revolutionary development of geographical profiling, the study of criminal behavior patterns across locations, the importance of information classification and investigative methods that lead to an arrest, and how these pieces of the puzzle led to the creation of his software, DRAGNETK. But that's not all - Prof Canter will also share his thoughts on why the United States has such a high incidence of brutal shootings and serial killings compared to other nations, and what happens when crime goes unpunished. A pioneer and creator of investigative psychology, Professor Canter is Emeritus Professor at the University of Liverpool and a visiting professor at Liverpool Hope University and Bucks New University. He's also the man responsible for introducing environmental psychology to the UK and Europe in the 1960s, studying how spaces such as offices, schools and hospitals affect our behavior. 17 Years Later by J.P. Pomare - who is of course a New Zealander, although I believe these days he lives in Melbourne. He writes terrific thrillers which are often set here, and this time, a family have been murdered in their beds in Cambridge and their chef convicted and sent to prison. Many years later, the prison psychologist is convinced that he didn't get a fair trial and an Australian podcaster takes an interest in the case and travels here to research it for her show. The two of them team up to investigate what actually happened, which is where the author really shines. He sent me down several rabbit holes and had me off on the wrong track, with a book that's full of surprises and thriller twists.   Unmasking Monsters by David (Chook) Henwood. The author spent almost 40 years with the New Zealand Police and in the early days was part of a team trying unsuccessfully for some years to hunt down a serial rapist who was terrorising South Auckland. They were instrumental in developing Criminal Profiling which had not been used here before but enabled them finally to catch their man, and it's been in use ever since, forever changing the way that policing is done in New Zealand. His stories about his time with the force are fascinating – some criminals became friends – and he shows real insight and empathy into the lives of many of the people he came into contact with.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On May 31, 1985, two days before her high school graduation, Shari Smith was abducted from the driveway of her family home in South Carolina. Based on the crime scene and the abductor's repeated and taunting calls to the family, law enforcement quickly realized they were dealing with a sophisticated and highly dangerous criminal. A letter arrived the next day entitled “Last Will & Testament,” in which Shari, knowing she was to be murdered, wrote bravely and achingly of her love for her parents, siblings, and boyfriend, saying that while they would miss her, she knew they would persevere through their faith. The abduction rocked her quiet town, triggering a massive manhunt and bringing in the FBI, which enlisted profiler John Douglas. A few days later, a phone call told the family where they could find Shari's body. Then nine-year-old Debra May Helmick was kidnapped from her yard, confirming the harsh realization that Smith's murder was no random act. A serial killer was evolving, and the only way to stop him would be to use the study of criminal behavior to anticipate his next move before he could kill again. Douglas devised a risky and emotionally fraught strategy to use Shari's lookalike older sister Dawn as bait to draw out the unknown subject. Dawn and her parents courageously agreed. One of the most haunting investigations of Douglas's storied career, this case details how the eerily accurate profile he created—alongside his carefully crafted and stage-managed manipulation of the killer's psychology—combined with dedicated police work and cutting-edge forensic science to end a reign of criminal terror. As Shari's family took incredible personal risks to lure her killer from the shadows, Douglas and the FBI pushed criminal profiling to its limits, culminating in one of his most dramatic and effective confrontations with a sadistic and remorseless killer. For several days after the abduction, the kidnapper called and sent letters to the family, taunting them with details of abduction and murder of Shari. Ultimately, he revealed the location of Shari's body on a phone call to Shari's older sister, Dawn. But he wasn't finished. Two weeks to the day of Shari's abduction, the murderer snatched another victim, 9-year-old Debra May Helmick, who came to a similar fate. The authorities realized they were dealing with a sadistic, narcissistic serial killer of young women.   WHEN A KILLER CALLS is the haunting story of Murder, Criminal Profiling and Justice in a small town, written by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. John and Mark have written 7 previous books, including Mindhunter, the number one New York Times bestseller that was the basis for the hit Netflix series of the same name. Mark drew the short straw, and he joins me today on Murder Most Foul.

Criminal Minds. Inside the Mind of a Serial Killer. Inside the Criminal Mind. Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez. Each of these is the title of a series, fictional or otherwise, or documentary that relies on the work of so-called criminal profilers. They're all premised, more or less, on the same idea: That the ability to venture inside the mind of an individual who's committed a horrific act of violence–say, serial murder, rape, or kidnapping–is the key to figuring out why that crime happened in the first place. This theory may sound promising at first blush; after all, the highest echelons of law enforcement in the US continue to use criminal profiling tactics to this day. But the reality is that, despite their prevalence in law enforcement both onscreen and off, criminal profiling techniques are largely ineffective, and in many ways, dangerous. Failing to consider institutional factors such as a culture of violence and easy access to weapons, patriarchy, austerity and other social ills that contribute to and reinforce violent crime, criminal profiling focuses almost exclusively on individual experiences and psychological makeup. Meanwhile, it categorizes “criminals” not as people who've been shaped by this social conditioning, but as neuro-deviants whose psychological anatomy is just different from yours or mine. On this episode, we examine the history of the practice of criminal profiling in the West; how the FBI and entertainment industry work in tandem to glamorize the profession, despite its harms; what the actual effectiveness of profiling is; and how it serves as yet another form of Hollywood copaganda. Our guests are Thomas MacMillan and Chris Fabricant.
