Anya Burgess, owner of Sola Violins, a full-service violin shop in downtown Lafayette, Louisiana joined Jan Swift of Discover Lafayette to discuss her journey and career in music. Anya moved to Acadiana in 2000 as a Teach for America instructor. Growing up in Winchester, Massachusetts, she knew very little about our region. But her desire to "land somewhere different" led her to teach at Washington Elementary School in St. Landry Parish, and she has remained here ever since. Growing up playing classical music, she was exposed to more traditional Appalachian and Irish music when she studied folklore at Indiana University. She picked up the violin during her college days, after being trained in piano in her younger days. Anya settled in the Arnaudville area and still lives in the region on five acres on the Bayou Teche with her two boys and her husband, Richard Burgess. She loves the space they have which allows the kids to run around. She also maintains a shop behind her home where she originally repaired and built violins until she opened a full-service shop, Sola Violins, in downtown Lafayette. The moves allowed for the expansion of inventory and services and great accessibility for most of her clientele who travel from Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Alexandria, and beyond. One of the only violin shops in the state, Sola Violins specializes in the restoration, rentals, and sales of violin family instruments. Their clientele includes everyone from students to professionals and Cajun to classical players.  Anya is also a violinmaker, having learned how to make violins in college. Surprisingly, our area has a great number of violin players, and as Anya says, "In this region, we may have one of the most per capita of violin players!" She is a board member of the Violin Society of America.  Anya Burgess' tools of the trade in violin making and repair. A great deal of Sola Violins' business involves the complete restoration of instruments. Symphony players, people who inherit instruments, and people bringing in instruments damaged by the elements are included in her clientele. She works on all instruments included in the violin family including the viola and cello, as well as the occasional member of the bass family of instruments. The store also offers accessories, books and other accouterments needed to play the instruments. Sola Violins offers guidance for teachers and you can reference the list of local string teachers here. Anya at her store, Sola Violins, in Lafayette, LA. Anya Burgess makes and plays violins. "I have an elegant presentation, but I want my store to be a welcoming place. I want it to have a living room vibe. My goal is that more people play music It's my number one goal." Photo by: Christina Clusiau Interestingly, COVID has affected the type of business Sola Violins attracts, but not the volume of business. Anya has found herself just as busy in 2020 as in years past, but this year has seen more rentals of instruments than sales, as people have picked up instruments to pass the time. Anya rents to people of all ages and notes it is very affordable to rent an instrument as you determine before purchasing if the choice was the right fit. A lifelong musician, Anya plays the fiddle with two Grammy-nominated Cajun bands, Bonsoir Catin and the Magnolia Sisters. She is the newest member of Magnolia Sisters, which she joined eighteen years ago. The band was first nominated for a Grammy in 2010 and again in 2015. Fellow band members include Anne Savoy, Jane Vidrine, and Lisa Trahan. She also plays alongside Bonsoir, Catin band members Kristi Guillory, Christine Balfa, Maegan Berard, Ashley Hayes Steele, and Danny DeVillier. Bonsoir, Catin was also nominated for a Grammy in 2015 and Anya recalled with delight the experience of traveling to the awards ceremony with both bands. In Acadiana, business is a tradition and tradition is a business - often the family business. There's a long heritage of musical families around here, dynasties of fiddlers and accordion players handing down the tools and tricks of the family trade to generation after generation.  It's one of our greatest exports. Lafayette practically pumps out ranks of acclaimed Zydeco and Cajun musicians and most of them are carrying on something they learned from their parents and their parents' parents. Throw a rock in any direction. You'll probably hit a Grammy nominee. Throw another, you'll hit her momma.  Christiaan's guests on this edition of ut to Lunch Acadiana are both internationally celebrated musicians from famous Cajun families.  Virginia-born Ann Savoy married into the Savoy family of Eunice and has toured internationally with her band the Magnolia Sisters which explores the feminine side of the Cajun tradition — they're not actually her sisters. Ann is a writer and will soon publish the second volume of her archival work Cajun Music: A Reflection of a People.  Louis Michot grew up in a big, sprawling Cajun music family. Since 1999, he's toured internationally with Lost Bayou Ramblers, a band he started with his brother Andre 20 years ago. Lost Bayou won a Grammy for their 2017 record Kalenda. Recently, Louis launched Nouveau Electric Records, a label that puts out experimental artists rooted in Louisiana French musical traditions.  Out to Lunch is recorded over lunch at The French Press in downtown Lafayette. Welcome to Confetti Park, a place where you can listen to kids music and hear stories, poems, jumprope jingles, and learn about the culture of Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta. I’m Katy Hobgood Ray, your host.  In New Orleans we are celebrating our 300th birthday this year. New Orleans was founded in 1718 by Bienville, and the city and Louisiana are known for having unique mix of cultural influences: French, Spanish, African, German, Native America, and many other peoples … that is why we have such unique food and music. This is a music medley of songs featured on the show this week. Give Me A Squeeze Please - Buckwheat Zydeco Joke of the Day - 7-8-9 Swamp Stomp - Angela Mannino Whistle While You Work - Louis Armstrong Twinkle Twinkle - Ayana of the Renzi Center Sharing - a poem by Marcus Page Fingers Under the Door - Vivi Melody Hide and Seek - Jazzy Ash L.O.S.T. - Imagination Movers Je Veux Marier - Magnolia Sisters This episode of Confetti Park begins with a song by Buckwheat Zydeco, a famous zydeco musician. Zydeco is a kind of music that was created in Louisiana, by Cajun French, African and Native American people blending all their sounds. Buck is going to tell us all about a very important instrument of zydeco music….. the accordion. Then we hear from Angela Mannino with "Swamp Stomp"…. Angela is a New orleans Native who now lives in NY where she is a renowned soprano opera singer… we are lucky to have her singing several great Louisiana kids songs on this album. We also hear famous jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong, performing a song from Disney’s Snow White…. You might remember seven dwarves singing this… "Whistle While You Work." Ayana, a student at the Shreveport based Renzi Center, and New Orleans poet Marcus Page share their poems, and then we hear a little run of hide and seek songs, beginning with NOLA native Vivi Melody. The Imagination Movers are perhaps Louisiana’s most famous kids music band. Jazzy Ash, who is terrific fun, lives in Los Angeles but spent her childhood summers on the West bank of New Orleans. She plays Dixieland style kids music. We end with the Magnolia Sisters, a Cajun band from Lafayette Louisiana. "Je Veux Marier," which translates to“I want to marry,” is a fun song to dance to at a Cajun wedding. Also in this episode of Confetti Park is the storytime feature Louis Lion, When It Gets Dark I May Start Cryin, by Cindy Foust of Monroe, Louisiana. Cindy has a whole Alpha-kidZ children's book series. Each letter of the alphabet gets a feature story and a feature creature who has an adventure… and learns a valuable lesson. You can listen to all the stories you hear on this radio show on our free Confetti Park podcast. The Confetti Park radio show and podcast is supported by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation and Music Rising at Tulane University. Thanks for listening. Remember to look for the magic in every day!

We launched Out to Lunch Acadiana in July 2015. When we went on the air, KRVS in Lafayette was as it still is a mostly music station. We didn t know if we d have a single listener to a show about Acadiana business. Even knowing that, our very first guests, Matt Stuller from Stuller Inc and Anya Burgess from Sola Violins, were gracious enough to come on the show. In the intervening years, Out to Lunch has gotten pretty popular on KRVS. And podcasting has gone mainstream. Now we have a large radio and podcast audience, with listeners in Acadiana, across the country, and around the world. So, given that there is a pretty good chance, wherever you are, that you didn t hear Anya Burgess or Matt Stuller on our initial broadcast, we re going to rectify that. Though he s too modest to say it himself, Matt Stuller is arguably Acadiana s most successful business person. Here are a few facts to back that up. Stuller Incorporated makes 200,000 pieces of jewelry for over 40,000 jewelry outlets worldwide. It s one of the largest jewelry manufacturing and distributing firms in the United States, with facilities in Bangkok, Barcelona, and 3 plants in North America, including here in Lafayette where there are over one thousand employees. Stuller Inc is a huge and hugely successful company that Matt has grown from its infancy in the early 1970 s. It s an absolute pleasure to welcome Matt back to out to Lunch Acadiana. Anya Burgess is a fiddle player who started out fixing her own and other people s violins, on her dining room table. That eventually turned into a business when Anya opened her storefront, Sola Violins, in downtown Lafayette in 2014. As a musician, Anya has been nominated for a Grammy. Twice. Once each with both of her bands, Bonsoir Catin and The Magnolia Sisters. Anya and Matt are two very different but equally unique contributors to both the culture and economy of Acadiana.
