We watched the 2018 film from Robert Zemeckis, Welcome to Marwen. We're encouraging you to do two things this week:Read up on Mark Hogancamp, the focus of this film, and watch the documentary Marwencol to get a first hand view of this fascinating person. If you're dealing with trauma of your own, seek out help and companionship. The story of Mark Hogancamp extends far beyond what's shown in this film and is worth your time. Steven touches on parts of the documentary in this episode, but there's a wealth of information out there. And as this film shows, there are always people out there who want you to be okay, no matter your circumstances. There are always people who want to be there for you. This week we dive into an additional installment of our Complicated Failures Festival with the odd and strange biographical story of Mark Hogancamp, a victim of a brutal attack and some unusual coping mechanisms are explored in the underwhelming Robert Zemeckis production of Welcome To Marwen.
In this episode we talk about Mark Hogancamp created the 1:6 scale world of Marwencol as a means of recovery from a near-fatal attack that left him with traumatic brain injury. Mark Hogancamp is the artist I was thinking of, and as you listen to this episode, I think you'll understand why the audio is so bad. My apologies.
Episode 150! We’re commemorating by taking a look back at one of our favorite documentaries, the 2010 Jeff Malmstein documentary Marwencol. After recovering from a brutal attack that left him in a coma, Mark Hogancamp builds a miniature World War II-era town in his backyard and creates photographic stories of its intrigues. This is a story about hate crimes, art therapy, and time-traveling witches!Marwencol has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes while its biopic adaptation starring Steve Carell has only 35%.Follow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.

On April 8, 2000, Mark Hogancamp was attacked by five men and left for dead outside of a bar in Kingston, NY. After nine days in a coma, he awoke to find he had no memory of his previous adult life. He had to relearn how to eat, walk and write. When his state-sponsored rehabilitative therapies ran out, Mark took his recovery into his own hands. In his backyard, he created a new world entirely within his control - a 1:6 scale World War II town he named Marwencol. Using doll alter egos of his friends and family, his attackers and himself, Mark enacted epic battles and recreated memories, which he captured in strikingly realistic photographs. Those photos eventually caught the eye of the art world, which lead to a series of gallery exhibitions, the award-winning documentary "Marwencol," the acclaimed book "Welcome to Marwencol," and a new identity for a man once ridiculed for playing with dolls. That's the true story. We all love Steve Carrell right? Michael Scott, the 40 Year Old Virgin, Foxcatcher?! The man has proven to be a damn good actor, even outside of comedy; but is this good Steve Carrell or I want to win an Oscar so badly I'm sucking Steve Carrell? Carrell stars as Mark Hogancamp in a movie based on a true story directed by Robert Zemeckis. Check out our review of Welcome to Marwen! After reading the reviews for Welcome to Marwen Craig, Cullen, and Tara unanimously decide to do an episode on a movie that we actually want people to watch--the original documentary about Mark Hogancamp that inspired the biopic. We talk about Robert Zemeckis and his uncanny attraction to the Uncanny Valley (Tara breaks down the research pretty well, but it's definitely worth a Google), imagination and memory, and a bunch of other stuff that would be spoilers, so just check it out!

Welcome to Marwen is recommended viewing by the Lodgemaster. The film was a box office bomb with projected losses for the studio at $60 million. That being said, there is no film quite like Welcome to Marwen. Robert Zemeckis takes his motion capture obsession to the next level capturing foot fetishes and doll fetishes and torture and all sorts of weird stuff. Zemeckis twists the documentary Marwencol into a PTSD nightmare that will haunt you for a long time. Steve Carell, Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Merritt Wever, Janelle Monáe, Eiza González, Gwendoline Christie, Leslie Zemeckis, Siobhan Williams and Neil Jackson star in it. I hope Marwencol creator Mark Hogancamp never has to watch this!
Steve Carell has been acting his ass off this year. Welcome to Marwen could have been the film that got him an Academy Award nomination this year but the choices made in the script really hold him back. Much like Beautiful Boy and Boy Erased, there's a much more interesting and nuanced story to tell in this movie but instead of that, the film focuses on the fictional world of "Marwen" that Mark Hogancamp creates. This is based off a true story and what happened to Hogancamp is truly horrific but the film barely scratches the surface and leaves the audience without a full picture of why things are happening the way they are. From the primitivist pederasty of Henry Darger’s ‘Realms of the Unreal‘, to Mark Hogancamp’s theraputic Marwencol dioramas, recent years have seen an ironic mainstreaming of ‘outsider art’. In a culture obsessed with commodifying novelty, a secretive graffiti tagger, self taught architect or precocious infant painter can be instantly thrown into the limelight. All that’s needed … Continue reading The Laugh laughing at the laugh – Tim & Eric – Culture File →
