This week we visit a strange town populated by action figures, where nothing is quite as it seems. Join us for the documentary Marwencol.
In the latest genre of My Favorite Summer, d$, Mikey, and #XLessDrEarl revisit a topic first explored in July 2015 - with Pinky and Clay Shaver back then, no less... Documentaries! Now that all three have seen many, many more documentaries since Eps 183 and 184 (over 450 episodes since those days), it was time to redo the lists. Since Pinky is still imprisoned in the Chinese gulag and Clay is coaching in the WNBA, we look to another filmmaker and production guy, friend of the show Ken Horstmann who joins the show to give his own lists. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are imagining that we're saving our friends from the worst scourge on the planet. We watched the 2018 film from Robert Zemeckis, Welcome to Marwen. We're encouraging you to do two things this week:Read up on Mark Hogancamp, the focus of this film, and watch the documentary Marwencol to get a first hand view of this fascinating person. If you're dealing with trauma of your own, seek out help and companionship. The story of Mark Hogancamp extends far beyond what's shown in this film and is worth your time. Steven touches on parts of the documentary in this episode, but there's a wealth of information out there. And as this film shows, there are always people out there who want you to be okay, no matter your circumstances. There are always people who want to be there for you. There is always a way through.(Recorded on June 14, 2023)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Welcome to Marwen - The Movie Database (TMDB)Welcome to Marwen trailer - YouTubeMarwencol (2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Robert Zemeckis — The Movie Database (TMDB)Cast Away (2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Team America: World Police (2004) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Avengers: Endgame (2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Polar Express (2004) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Steve Carell — The Movie Database (TMDB)Small Soldiers (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Blade (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Back to the Future (1985) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Little Miss Sunshine (2006) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Tom Hanks — The Movie Database (TMDB)Avatar (2009) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Mythic Quest (TV Series 2020- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Official Behind The Scenes Video | God of War: Ragnarok - YouTubeBenedict Cumberbatch - Behind-the-Scenes of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug - YouTubeBorn on the Fourth of July (1989) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the show

After recovering from a brutal attack that left him in a coma, Mark Hogancamp builds a miniature World War II-era town in his backyard and creates photographic stories of its intrigues. This is a story about hate crimes, art therapy, and time-traveling witches!Marwencol has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes while its biopic adaptation starring Steve Carell has only 35%.Follow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.

Hello boys and girls and everyone in between, today we're going to talk about men in heels, not to be confused with men in tights although both are valid. On this week's podcast we spend some time in Marwencol, with Captain Hogie and his squad. Carlos and Alx delve into topics around prejudices, the power of imagination, how the friendzone may or may not be a preconceived male plot for world domination, and the ever important and valid lesson: "mind your business". /commentarynoaf /alxisvisions /carlitoswayxxii

On April 8, 2000, Mark Hogancamp was attacked by five men and left for dead outside of a bar in Kingston, NY. After nine days in a coma, he awoke to find he had no memory of his previous adult life. He had to relearn how to eat, walk and write. When his state-sponsored rehabilitative therapies ran out, Mark took his recovery into his own hands. In his backyard, he created a new world entirely within his control - a 1:6 scale World War II town he named Marwencol. Using doll alter egos of his friends and family, his attackers and himself, Mark enacted epic battles and recreated memories, which he captured in strikingly realistic photographs. Those photos eventually caught the eye of the art world, which lead to a series of gallery exhibitions, the award-winning documentary "Marwencol," the acclaimed book "Welcome to Marwencol," and a new identity for a man once ridiculed for playing with dolls. That's the true story. After reading the reviews for Welcome to Marwen Craig, Cullen, and Tara unanimously decide to do an episode on a movie that we actually want people to watch--the original documentary about Mark Hogancamp that inspired the biopic. We talk about Robert Zemeckis and his uncanny attraction to the Uncanny Valley (Tara breaks down the research pretty well, but it's definitely worth a Google), imagination and memory, and a bunch of other stuff that would be spoilers, so just check it out!
Welcome to Marwen is recommended viewing by the Lodgemaster. The film was a box office bomb with projected losses for the studio at $60 million. That being said, there is no film quite like Welcome to Marwen. Robert Zemeckis takes his motion capture obsession to the next level capturing foot fetishes and doll fetishes and torture and all sorts of weird stuff. Zemeckis twists the documentary Marwencol into a PTSD nightmare that will haunt you for a long time. Steve Carell, Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Merritt Wever, Janelle Monáe, Eiza González, Gwendoline Christie, Leslie Zemeckis, Siobhan Williams and Neil Jackson star in it. I hope Marwencol creator Mark Hogancamp never has to watch this!

Pamela has the floor on this episode, as she wanted to discuss the thorny subject of social media support groups. It's a tricky pickle; on the one hand, message boards, forums, FB groups etc can be a valuable and essential medium offering tangible help, advice and guidance. On the other hand, they can be a minefield and a confusing - sometimes troubling environment. We reflect on our own experiences of online support (which may not reflect that of others, of course) and discuss the pros and cons. It's hard not to bulldoze through this topic so we've tried to tackle it in a balanced manner. We'd love to hear your experience of online support groups - both good and bad. Email podcast@thinkinghabits.co.uk with your thoughts. Also here's [Marwencol](https://marwencol.com/) - it's great. #keeptalking Simon & Pamela

KOYAAAAAAAAANISQAAAAATSI!!! We're getting very serious and talking documentaries today instead of all these silly entertaining films like Star Wars or Rocky. No, this week is about proper films, so who better than podcasting jokesmith artists Jack Stewart (as host) and Phil Sharman from Wikishuffle, joined by Failed Critics film buff Owen Hughes, to tackle these serious and not at all funny films. Today these very serious men tackle early 1980's artful look at society, KOYAANISQATSI, as nominated by Dino Leone, and Jack's own nomination, the slightly tragic MARWENCOL. We're banking on the fact you can't pronounce those, otherwise what a silly title this episode has! Also the group tackle their favourite DOCUMENTARIES, talk some of the suggestions as to the best documentaries from PAF fans on Twitter, duke out what they think of Netflix's MAKING A MURDERER & podcast SERIAL and finally Jack tests Owen & Phil on a docu-special QUESTION TIME. Who will triumph? Tune in to find out! Oh and see if you can... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

From the primitivist pederasty of Henry Darger’s ‘Realms of the Unreal‘, to Mark Hogancamp’s theraputic Marwencol dioramas, recent years have seen an ironic mainstreaming of ‘outsider art’. In a culture obsessed with commodifying novelty, a secretive graffiti tagger, self taught architect or precocious infant painter can be instantly thrown into the limelight.
