It was a bit like winning an Oscar while in acting school, just not something that ever happens. Most people are thrown by early success, but not Trenton. He pressed forward in his studio where he crafted epic stories in large scale paintings that later expanded into installations, sculptures, and performance art. His creative process is unique. Piles of collected objects, receipts, food wrappers, etc find their way into his work where their color, texture and attitude unfold as the fabric of Trenton's universe of heroes, villains, and ancient mysteries. We spoke with Trenton about his neurodivergent approach to the world, how collecting influences his visual sensibilities, and how chaos becomes precise order in his work. At the time of our recording, Trenton had a large show at the Jewish Museum in New York exploring intersecting themes in his work and that of Philip Guston. Bio For nearly two decades, Trenton Doyle Hancock has created a vivid, fantastical universe where autobiographical elements blend seamlessly with references to art history, comics, superheroes, and popular culture. Through paintings, drawings, and expansive installations, Hancock crafts complex narratives exploring themes of good versus evil, infused with personal symbolism and mythology. His work draws stylistically from artists like Hieronymus Bosch, Max Ernst, Henry Darger, Philip Guston, and R. Crumb, integrating text as both narrative driver and visual element. His distinctive storytelling has extended beyond gallery walls into performances, ballet collaborations such as Cult of Color: Call to Color with Ballet Austin, and murals at prominent public spaces including Dallas Cowboys Stadium and Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better. How did an eBay search lead to the discovery of a lost classic of comics? How can art help us build a better America? Artist and teacher Keith Mayerson joins the show to talk about co-editing the amazing new book, Frank Johnson: Secret Pioneer of American Comics, Vol. 1 (Fantagraphics) and his multi-decade "wordless novel" in paintings, My American Dream (Karma). We get into how Frank Johnson made thousands of pages of comics in private, never published, and may have created the first American comic-book in history, whether he constitutes an Outsider Artist, how his creative legacy contrasts with Henry Darger's, and what it means to make a lifelong body of work with no sense or expectation of a readership. We also get into Keith's My American Dream project, its roots in 9/11 & the GWBush era, how his paintings play off of each other like panels in a comic (and how the curation of art exhibitions is a form of comics), the mash-up of key cultural figures of modern America, his art-subject trinity of James Dean, Elvis, and Keanu Reeves (and his story of meeting Keanu), how My American Dream works to synthesize aspects of Warhol & Rembrandt (& Haring), and the vitality of his painting of Kermit the Frog on a bicycle and the significance of the Muppets in his vision of America. Plus we discuss Keith's art & comics upbringing, the process of building comics programs at SVA and USC, his cult classic queer horror graphic novel with Dennis Cooper, the artistic act of suturing in to his subjects, why the job of art is keeping hope alive, how he felt when he found a parallel, secret history of comics taking place solely in one person's mind, and a lot more. EDIT: There are a couple places in here where my guest says something and then says he'd prefer it omitted from the recording. We talked more off-mic, and Jamie ultimately decided he was fine with putting out what all is in here. Jolene is joined by Jamie for a discussion that ranges across: cis4pay sex work, agender lesbianism to transfaggotry, radfem dalliances and detours, and the musical stylings of Jordaan Mason, and our fallen sister, Henry Darger. The intro and outro music is by Lynn July. Henry Darger is one of the most profitable outsider artists out there. Unfortunately he didn't reap the benefit of that while he was alive, spending much of it in abject poverty. He was compelled to make and write art during the time he was not working as a janitor or dishwasher. His artwork dealt with themes of child abuse and violence, subjects very familiar with Darger when he was put in an asylum at the age of 12. Strange Country cohost Beth with special pinch (or pitch) hitter Terry discuss this artist and why work gets recognition after they're gone. Theme music: Big White Lie by A Cast of Thousands. He was orphaned and abused his entire life. He created a magical world to escape to that's unlike anything anyone has ever done. In the late 1800s, Henry Darger lived a difficult life full of pain and trauma. He suffered abuse at the hands of those around him. He wasn't understood. Eventually, he'd focus this all into a magical world that he would capture in the world's longest novel and a series of breathtaking wall drawings that are unlike anything you've ever seen.

When Olivia Laing moved to New York City in her midthirties, she found herself inhabiting loneliness on a daily basis. Increasingly fascinated by the most shameful of experiences, she began to explore the lonely city by way of art. Moving from Edward Hopper's Nighthawks to Andy Warhol's Time Capsules, from Henry Darger's hoarding to David Wojnarowicz's AIDS activism, Laing conducts an electric, dazzling investigation into what it means to be alone, illuminating not only the causes of loneliness but also how it might be resisted and redeemed.Humane, provocative, and moving, The Lonely City is a celebration of a strange and lovely state, adrift from the larger continent of human experience, but intrinsic to the very act of being alive. "Rather than condescendingly and misguidedly treating Darger only as a case study, we can look into his work for what it may tell us about both the powerful allure of mass-mediated narrative and imagery and the possibility (or impossibility) of escaping the labyrinthine and often terrifying histories and politics of which we in the world today are the direct heirs.” Michael Moon. TW: Child Abuse, Dead Kids; There's not going to be a sweeter way of going around this rather than saying... Look, this motherfucker is sad. Come join us as we laugh off the awkwardness of something that was probably all too common: the slavery of kids not that long ago. From the forgotten tales of thousands of children, we're lucky enough to be able to see the results from one man, the author of the longest tale ever written, Henry Darger!
In his external life Darger was a pitiable figure, reclusive, impoverished, orphaned at 16, often regarded as crazy, suffering almost constant pain in his later years and working menial jobs his entire life. However in the internal world of his writings and art he was both a hero and anti-hero, creator of magical, violent world's and a fiercely determined protector of children.Cover image - Henry Darger - "At Obrigano Captured once when Glandelinians had attacked Dicies headquarter, house to left middle of pictures They escaped with the four younger children however" - circa 1955/60Reading ListHenry J. Darger's legacy: Grayson PerryAlthough Darger's artwork and written works remained out of the spotlight for decades, they still influenced many contemporary artists. Among them, widely acclaimed artist and Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry stumbled upon Darger's work in the seventies while still in art school. In this episode, Grayson Perry discusses Henry Darger's influence on his work, the path to declaring oneself an artist, elitism in the art world and many more topics, with Philippe Cohen Solal. Four years after Henry Darger's birth in 1892, his mother died giving birth to his sister – and four years after that – his father died. Henry went first to a Catholic orphanage where he remained until he turned twelve and was taken to a children's asylum. In the late 1920s, he rented a boardinghouse room and found work as a janitor in a Catholic hospital. He lived at that same boardinghouse and worked the same job until his death in 1973. And during those forty plus years – without anyone knowing what he was doing – Henry Darger turned his creative childlike imagination loose – and you are about to find out what he accomplished. Stories from History's Dust Bin is a 3-volume set of historical short stories. These are the nuggets of gold that had fallen by the wayside… the little known and unusual. Many of these gems were destined to be forever lost until they were collected, dusted off and brought back to life by author Wayne Winterton. Each podcast episode features one of over 450 short stories from either Winterton's Award-Winning Stories from Dust Bin series* or the companion volume, From Ace to Zamboni: 101 More Dust Bin Stories, as narrated by either the author or his son, William, or daughter, Jana. All of the song lyrics featured on the OUTSIDER album were written by Henry Darger himself. The late artist was both a lyricist and great music lover. In this episode, Philippe Cohen Solal dissects Henry Darger's taste in music, and is joined by Mike Lindsay to discuss the creation of the OUTSIDER project. Both musicians reflect on their common desire to make an album that would become part of Darger's legacy to the artistic world. “In the Realms of the Unreal” is Henry Darger's masterpiece. A 15 000 pages novel, which he later transposed to hundreds of paintings. In this imaginary world, seven sisters who go by the name of the Vivian Girls lead the rebellion of enslaved children against adult men. Darger often draws the Vivian Girls naked and sometimes with male genitalia. His obsessive and subversive representation of little girls was often met with backlash, some critics even calling him a paedophile. In this episode, art historian Leisa Rundquist analyses Henry Darger's portrayal of girlhood as perhaps one of the most misunderstood aspects of his art. This podcast series was created by Philippe Cohen Solal, written by Clémentine Spiler and produced by César Depouilly for ¡Ya Basta! At the age of 12, Henry Darger was sent to a mental institution. The diagnosis was “self abuse”. He was one of many children to be sent away, mainly for being poor and uncared for, and possibly for being a homosexual. The abuse he witnessed and presumably suffered at the Asylum left him scarred for life. In this episode, Philippe Cohen Solal and biographers Michael Bonesteel and Jim Elledge discuss Henry Darger's childhood and how trauma shaped his art.Content warning : Please note this episode includes mentions of child abuse, physical and sexual violence. When Henry Darger moved into a nursing home a few months before he passed away in 1973, his landlords, Kiyoko and Nathan Lerner, found over 30 000 pages of writing and 300 paintings in his apartment. Not only did this discovery save Henry Darger's life's work from destruction, it also changed the Lerners' life forever. In this episode, Philippe Cohen Solal invites Kiyoko Lerner to reminisce about her former tenant, the uncovering of his art and to reflect on the many ways it impacted her and her late husband's lives. Betsy Fuchs, who used to be Henry Darger's neighbor also joins the discussion. This podcast series was created by Philippe Cohen Solal, written by Clémentine Spiler and produced by César Depouilly for ¡Ya Basta! Acclaimed electronic musician, producer, and composer Philippe Cohen Solal and Mike Lindsay, the Mercury Prize-winning co-founder, composer, and producer of UK acid folk band Tunng, have united for a remarkable new album inspired by the life and work of visionary American writer/artist Henry Darger. This accidental discovery of the "American Vincent Van Gough" Henry Darger had a vision for the love and protection of children, that has remained almost unknown, but through his art and poetry will be seen as an inspiration for centuries. The tribute album is music created to the poems of Darger, and visuals from his paintings. Darger's work is as deep, and powerfull as a Homerian Epic poem, just as long, and full of as much beauty, philosophy, and stories. This interview is central around the mind and inspiration of a "Mad Genius" unknown artist, who had inscribed on his potters field headstone "Protector of Children". Never has there been another work around that topic in music. I am releasing this today April 12th Henry Darger's brithday. Prepare to be moved. youtube instagram twitter facebook

Philippe Cohen Solal présente OUTSIDER: l'incroyable histoire d'Henry Darger. For most Americans, there’s a list of arts that they might be able to rattle off if pressed to name them off the top of their heads. Picasso. Michelangelo. Leonardo da Vinci. Name recognition does go a long way, but such lists also highlight what many of us don’t know-- a huge treasure trove of talented artists from decades or centuries past that might not be household names, but still have created incredible additions to the story of art. It’s not a surprise that many of these individuals represent the more diverse side of things, too-- women, people of color, different spheres of the social or sexual spectrum. What’s the difference between an artist, an engineer, an architect, and a contractor? For Nicolas Holiber, there isn’t one! Nicolas is a compelling sculptor and painter whose practice blurs the lines between the two using mediums such as acrylic paste, tar, oil paint, plaster, reclaimed wood, hardware, and even beeswax. He not only plays with the technicality of surface, but the idea of surface itself. His love for materiality and experimentation focuses on merging his tactile interests with content and narrative packed full of thought provoking ephemerality. Listen in, and let Nic's tranquil composure give you an idea of who “The Bird Guy” really is."Art is the only thing that makes me feel unstable; but it’s also the only thing that really makes me feel like I have a purpose; that gives me that sense of life.” -Nicolas HoliberShow Notes:1:30 - Artist to look out for: Matthew Monahan, Mark Rothko, Marisol Escobar, David Altmejd, Thomas Houseago, Huma Bhabha16:23 - Painting is an artifice20:55 - Nicolas’ work24:30 - Birds on Broadway 29:27 - Difference between an artist, an architect and a contractor.40:27 - Hooded Merganser43:45 - Quality 51:49 - Double crested Cormorant53:30 - New York City Audubon58:50 - Alice Waters interview1:04:06 - BREAK1:05 - Nico Handmade Stretchers - Use the promo code GRIND to receive 10% off the entire order1:06 - Buzzsprout Start your own podcast with Buzzsprout and get a $20 Amazon gift card after you sign up for a paid plan. The Vivian Girls Are Visited In The Night”. A TЯA-TЯ
Transgression vs. transcendence: Elizabeth Hand's brand-new novel, Curious Toys (Mulholland Books), explores artistic and cultural taboos through the lens of a serial killer mystery set in the amusement parks of Progressive Era Chicago. We talk about her inspiration for making outsider artist/writer Henry Darger one of the lead characters of Curious Toys, how she first heard about Darger and the Vivian Girls mythology he created in his paintings and 15,000-page (!) novel, the striking similarities between Darger and Tolkien, the tragedy of outsider/visionary artists, and the challenge of casting a nonbinary character a century in the past (the novel's other lead, not Darger). We also get into why writers have no control over the success of their books, the differences between writing on spec vs. on contract, some hints about her next Cass Neary novel, the time she outdrew Deepak Chopra at a bookstore signing, and more! • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

Deep in the heart of the Windy City, one of the most surprisingly prolific authors and illustrators of all time amassed his work in secret. It may not be the best way to get established in the arts, but it's a hell of a topic for conversation.

Class is back and this time we are discussing the 2013 found footage film Mr. Jones and what it has to tell us about Guerrilla, Street, and Outsider Art. We talk a whole bunch about how much we liked this movie, even though the overall reception can be described as "mixed" at best. Plus we sing! And play the drums! Show notes and useful links: 1:00- Tyler talks a bit about the "Arrive Alive" presentation at his school. For more about Arrive Alive, check out their website. 1:30- Many airports need volunteers to be injured victims during their annual emergency exercises. Often times they will make you up in some pretty horrific makeup! Check out Kansas City International's call for volunteers here or Google your local airport if you are interested. 3:50- Tyler is currently reading Year's Best Body Horror 2017 edited by C.P. Dunphey. If you are interested in the body horror sub-genre, we totally recommend it. Learn more over at Wikipedia. 23:45- No discussion of street and guerrilla art would be complete without a discussion of Banksy. Check out the trailer for Exit Through the Gift Shop, a documentary about Banksy and try to get a hold of the movie. It is really well done. 25:00- Mike discusses an interview that was published on Daily Dead where Mr. Jones writer and director Karl Mueller indicated that one of his inspirations was Henry Darger. 30:15- Likely the coolest and most mysterious guerrilla/outsider art out there are the Toynbee Tiles. You can watch an entire documentary about them here for free. 36:00- Check out more artwork from Pumpkinrot on their website. Not only is Pumpkinrot responsible for the super cool scarecrows in Mr. Jones, but also some of the work in Krampus. 37:30- Awesome Huck Magazine article about Apotropaic magic in Bulgaria and the super cool costumes that people wear to ward off evil spirits. 48:00- For similar works, check out the Laird Barron short story "Strappado." Founded in 1990, Tales of Blarg became one of the longest running and most influential zines out of the East Bay punk scene that gave the world Lookout Records. Over the years, the it published the work of such Northern California punk rock luminaries as Aaron Cometbus, Iggy Scam, Lawrence Livermore and Robert Eggplant. Janelle Hessig (née Blarg) hasn’t published an issue since 2006, but the writer/cartoonist is still strongly invested in the world of independent publishing. (And inspired a song by Bratmobile along the way.) For years, she worked for Last Gasp, and these days publishes other artists’ work through her own publishing house, when she’s not on the clock at San Francisco PBS affiliate, KQED. In 2014, she published The Cruising Diaries, a collection of writer Brontez Purnell, which Hessig also illustrated. Next year, Gimme Action will publish Rotten Philosophies, a personal collection of work from Hessig, who spent much of last year battling breast cancer. Hessig recommended a local San Francisco bar decorated with work inspired by outsider artist Henry Darger for this conversation, which touches on the importance of self-publishing, the downside of the internet and living day to day with a life threatening disease.
The search for Elsie Paroubek ended when her corpse was pulled from a Chicago canal. She had certainly been murdered, but who did it? Carter and Wenndy investigate the suspects in Elsie’s disappearance, including gypsies, a local peddler, and one of the most famous outsider artists, Henry Darger.

Painter and writer Timothy Hyman RA and curator Roger Malbert discuss the artists who have chosen to pursue figurative painting over the last century. With the arrival of abstraction and movements such as Abstract Expressionism in the 20th century, people began to see figurative painting as outdated and at odds with the very concept of modern art. Discussing Hyman's new book 'The World New Made: Figurative Painting in the Twentieth Century', Hyman and Malbert highlight a range of Modernists who, despite their awareness of abstraction, chose to work in narrative and confessional modes. Works by often-marginalised artists such as Max Beckmann and Stanley Spencer, Marsden Hartley and Alice Neel, Charlotte Salomon and Henry Darger, express the possibility of a new kind of figuration, as well as a foundation for our questioning of formalist readings of 20th-century art.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 330 This week we are joined by our special guest co-host Dan Rybicky, a filmmaker and professor in Cinema Art and Science at Columbia College Chicago. Dan is also the co-director of the documentary "Almost There", an unflinching look at the aging years of outsider artist Peter Anton. Dan and his co-director Aaron Wickenden enter Peter's dilapidated house to take a look at his accumulating collection of art. But before they know it they find themselves not only knee deep in an over-whelming 8-year process of shooting footage, but they also inadvertently become part of Peter's life. Which becomes even more troubling when they are forced to deal with the harsh realities of Peter's past and current existence. It's a fascinating film, and we talk with Dan about not just the film itself, but also filmmaking as a whole, and how things have changed as both a director and teacher in the new digital age. Plus we delve into some grand questions about the future and some scary realizations about ourselves. Plus as we search for the world's largest pierogi, we also mention... From the primitivist pederasty of Henry Darger’s ‘Realms of the Unreal‘, to Mark Hogancamp’s theraputic Marwencol dioramas, recent years have seen an ironic mainstreaming of ‘outsider art’. In a culture obsessed with commodifying novelty, a secretive graffiti tagger, self taught architect or precocious infant painter can be instantly thrown into the limelight.
