to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 98 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Brian Tallerico, Managing Editor of RogerEbert.com, to discuss the next film in their Peter Jackson series, The Frighteners (1996). The critical success of Heavenly Creatures proved to put Jackson on the map, with Hollywood calling for him to start making bigger pictures. In writing a treatment in 1992 for an idea that would become The Frighteners, Oscar winning director Robert Zemeckis viewed their idea as a chance to be a spin off to the television series Tales from the Crypt, centering on a small town private eye who can see and speak to the dead. In working with Jackson and Fran Walsh, Zemeckis liked the idea of the young director making the film, and thus became the last film he would make before the biggest project of his life. But is it good, is it successful, or is it a forgotten relic that doesn't make sense within Jackson's filmography. Ryan, Jay, and Brian debate where The Frighteners lands, the importance of Weta Digital, the career of Michael J. Fox, Jackson getting the movie filmed in New Zealand even though it takes place in America, and preview the start of the boys' journey to Middle Earth over the next couple of weeks. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 1h21m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Peter Jackson with a review of his next film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Part II of "Lee Benches Gump": A three-part series where Spro & Lee go back thirty years to relitigate the merit of Forrest Gump, Robert Zemeckis, and Tom Hanks. In this episode, Laurence joins the conversation about director Robert Zemeckis and his ill-gotten Oscar of 1995.
After redefining blockbuster cinema with "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Endgame," the Russo Brothers are back—this time with a sci-fi adventure that swaps superheroes for sentient robots, a road trip, and some retro-futuristic ‘90s nostalgia. "The Electric State" follows Millie Bobby Brown as Michelle, a teenage runaway navigating a post-apocalyptic America filled with abandoned AI machines, scavengers, and a looming government threat. Her only companions? A quirky robot named Cosmo and a smuggler played by Chris Pratt, who may or may not be in this for the right reasons. Think "E.T." meets Pixar meets "Mad Max"—or if Spielberg and Zemeckis had made a dystopian buddy movie with a lot more existential dread. (Read our review here). The Russo Brothers and their longtime writing partner Christopher Markus joined The Discourse to talk about adapting Simon Stålenhag's graphic novel, balancing family-friendly adventure with darker themes, and, of course, their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In this episode, we're kicking things off with a little personal drama—stress literally threw my back out, leaving me flat on my back contemplating life (and the plot of my next movie). Then, we dive into the curious case of Gene Hackman's passing, unpacking some mysterious details surrounding the legendary actor's natural yet puzzling death. Could it be the start of a real-life Hollywood thriller? For movie fans, we explore the world of Beowulf adaptations, dissecting everything from the gritty Beowulf & Grendel to the bizarre animated take by Robert Zemeckis. Which one truly captures the epic poem, and which one left us scratching our heads? Plus, a hilarious breakdown of our signature movie rating system: Binge Now, Binge Later, or Binge Never. As always, there's a detour into nostalgia—this time, it's all about 80s Care Bears bubblegum (don't ask, just watch). So, whether you're here for some juicy Hollywood mystery, epic movie battles, or just a good laugh, this episode has it all!

Send us a textDEATH BECOMES HER (1992)For the second episode in TGTPTU's Season 14 redux series, the film choice was Thomas's. As he explains at the top of the ep, he wanted to do a Streep rewatch with recent co-host Ryan, specifically and especially a comedy. His first choice of Adaptation got nixed as it had previously been covered twice, first during the Cage and then again in the Streep season. So paired with the previous episode's High Plains Driver, this week TGTPTU (re)presents SHE-DEVIL (1986), the laugh-out-loud revenge story featuring Roseanne Barr as— Oh, apologies. We just lost half of our hosts and all of our listeners. Okay, let's try again. For the second in our Season 14 redux series, the choice is Thomas's and I guess we'll go with DEATH BECOMES HER (1992), originally recorded in 2023 as Season 8, Episode 12. And although during that Streeps of Fire season surprise special guests and Jack recorded an excellent episode in all but audio quality, none of the three current hosts (Ken, Thomas, or Ryan) were on to talk Robert Zemeckis's special effects comedy starring the co-billed Streep, Hawn, and Willis. So grabs some fresh takes on the film (e.g., Death Becomes Her structured a TV dinner) as Ken beefs with writer David Koepp; Ryan with Zemeckis; Thomas with olds telling youngs how to spend money on food; and Jack with the ghost of Maggie Thatcher. Thomas also puts Jack on blast for not watching films he mentioned going to watch during the original episode's recording while, don't worry, She-Devil receives plenty of mentions throughout. And if that's not enough ep for you ingrates, cohost throughout Season 8 and the voice singing the first three seasons' intro songs, the illustrious and always opinionated Andi drops in briefly to say some unkind words of demotivation to the boys. Stay flaccid, y'all. Storyteller Leslie Zemeckis talks with Josh Molina about her award-winning, women-centered films that tell the lost stories of powerful women in history. Her most recent documentary Grandes Horizontales tells the story of mid-1805s courtesans who accumulated wealth, power and property by breaking the rules, when women could now marry or work outside of their class. From her website lesliezemeckis.com: "It isn't for us to judge their choices but to reveal the answers behind the why and the what about these free-spirited, determined women that inspired decades of artists who tried to capture their likeness, their essence, their appeal." She also talks about her body of work, including "Bound by Flesh" about conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, and the award-winning "Mabel, Mabel, Tiger Trainer" about the first female tiger trainer, Mabel Stark, Zemeckis explains why she was called to tell the stories of women and the lessons we can learn from powerful women in the past. She also teaches writing and storytelling and recently returned to a full-time schedule at Santa Barbara City College. The importance of a still photographer is highlighted when Caruso recounts a director's relief at his arrival. The director was confident that with Caruso on set, he no longer had to worry about the stills for publicity or marketing. Caruso also shares how he got the opportunity to work with Robert Zemeckis on "Death Becomes Her" because Zemeckis saw his work on Ron Howard's crew and "figured that if you're working with Ron, then that's who we want to work with." This further emphasizes the importance of reputation and connections in the film industry. Show Clip from The Paris Chong Show with Phillip Caruso https://youtu.be/lZ6Xvndt6vw https://www.theparischongshow.com
Phillip Caruso sits with Paris Chong to chat about some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Francis Ford Coppola, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Tom Hanks. He was able to work with these directors due to his reputation and connections. When Caruso was starting out, Robert Zemeckis wanted to work with him because he had worked with Ron Howard. When he asked Zemeckis how he got to him, he was told that they looked at Ron Howard's crew and “figured that if you're working with Ron, then that's who we want to work with.” Caruso started working in the film business at a young age. His father had been involved in the industry and left him a lot of equipment. Caruso learned how to work the equipment as a child and started making his own films at fifteen. He got his union card as a still photographer and started working with Dino De Laurentiis. If you enjoy Hollywood stories, Phillip has a lot of them. Getting creepy at Christmas, this week Kieran, Paul and I discuss the episode 'And All Through the House' from horror anthology show, Tales From The Crypt. In case you're not familiar with this, it sees a woman murder her husband and then get attacked by a derranged killer Father Christmas, and it's directed by Robert Zemeckis. (This is well worth watching on YouTube if you've never seen it before, it's tonnes of fun).
“You couldn't have made this movie three years ago,” said Robert Zemeckis, the director of “Here.”The film stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, and is based on a 2014 graphic novel that takes place in a single spot in the world over several centuries. The story mostly takes place in a suburban New Jersey living room. It skips back and forth through time, but focuses on a baby-boomer couple — played by Hanks and Wright — at various stages of their lives, from age 18 into their 80s.Before A.I. software, Zemeckis could have had multiple actors play each character, but the audience might have gotten lost trying to keep track. Conventional makeup could have taken a decade off Hanks, who is now 68, but not half a century. The issue with C.G.I. is time and money. Persuading us that we're watching Hanks and Wright in their 20s would have required hundreds of visual effects artists, tens of millions of dollars and months of postproduction work. A.I. software, though, changed all that accounting. Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture.
Bev is off for this 630th edition of Have You Ever Seen, so Ryan is in monologue mode talking about The Polar Express. The turn of the century saw Robert Zemeckis direct 3 consecutive motion-capture animated films (2 of which are Christmas movies), which were expensive and, to many viewers, very off-putting with that "uncanny valley" quality of the character's faces. Tom Hanks wore the tight suit to portray a half-dozen characters and he does just as many voices, although he mostly mostly sounds like Tom Hanks playing the conductor and Santa Claus. This (horror?) film is pretty exciting though, with the kids often put in terrifying danger on that train. Zemeckis' long career is also thoroughly analyzed because it's been a "tale of 2 Bobs", comparing the first 20+ years of his career to the last 20. So, Hero Boys and Hero Girls, believe in the artistry while you wonder, as many did, why The Polar Express couldn't be as fun as it is odd. Well, Actually: Cast Away was overlooked as one of Zemeckis' Top 10 hits, so 5 of his Top 10 films did in fact get released this century.

As a special holiday gift to The Film Stage podcast feed, listen to a new Box Office Bonanza! Here we talk about random box office weekends and where they fit into our lives. The movies, the memories! This episode features Dan Mecca, Conor O'Donnell, Mitchell Beaupre, Jordan Raup, and Cory Everett. The box office weekend in question is July 21, 2000. The number one movie in the country was the Robert Zemeckis-directed, Clark Gregg-scripted, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer-starring supernatural thriller What Lies Beneath. The number three movie was the second Pokémon feature film, Pokémon 2000. Gladiator was still in theaters, so was U-571. But at the start, we mount a passionate defense of the new Zemeckis epic Here, which has now arrived digitally. After that, we talk about Martin Lawrence movies. We talk about how horrible Greg Kinnear's character is in Amy Heckerling's Loser. We talk about Al Pacino's new autobiography Sonny Boy. The sport doc Michael Jordan to the Max gets some discussion. An Office Space reference is completely ignored! There are too many 9/11 jokes! How many? You'll have to listen to find out. We remember that great bit with Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise from the MTV Movie Awards (“He's Harmless”). There's an appreciation of Jesus' Son as well. There's a Saving Silverman reference, talk of yo-yos and Yu-Gi-Oh! There's a remembrance of that time The Perfect Storm and The Patriot came out the same weekend. Finally, for a few moments I'm convinced that nobody has been recording the podcast! There's a lot here, people! We're thankful for you listening to us have fun! We hope you have some fun too! Check out The Film Stage's 2024 Holiday Gift Guide and Cory Everett's slew of Cinephile books and games! Enjoy this episode and we welcome other interesting box office weekends to cover in the future. Stay tuned in 2025 for more podcast news from The Film Stage!

In this episode, we review two new films and revisit a time-travel classic! Here Directed by Robert Zemeckis, starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright This introspective drama from Zemeckis follows multiple generations of couples and families as they inhabit the same home over a century. With Tom Hanks and Robin Wright leading the cast, Here dives into the layers of connection, change, and continuity within the walls of a single house. Woman of the Hour Directed by Anna Kendrick, starring Anna Kendrick and Daniel Zovatto Set in 1970s Los Angeles amidst a wave of sensational murders, this film marks Anna Kendrick's directorial debut. She also stars as a young actress who unknowingly encounters a serial killer while appearing on a dating show. Woman of the Hour blends tension and dark humor with chilling real-life inspiration. For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer & Tom O'Brien to review and discuss the latest film from Academy Award-winner Robert Zemeckis, "Here," which reunites him with his "Forrest Gump" stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and also stars Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly. With a single fixed camera angle, non-linear storytelling, and de-aging visual effects, what did we think of this latest experiment from Zemeckis? Tune in as we discuss these elements, the writing, acting, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... The day after Election Day, the Lodgecast tried to shake off the post-election blues by watching Robert Zemeckis's new film Here starring Forrest Gump and Jenny (Tom Hanks and Robin Wright). Zemeckis has had quite a run on the Lodgecast with three films: the Lodgecast classic Welcome to Marwen (2018), the remake of The Witches (2020), and Holy Smokeo himself, live-action Pinocchio (2022). Here (2024) looked to be another wild Zemeckis film-in-the-making, all taking place in one room, in one house over the course of decades. Actually millions of years as the film starts with dinosaurs, eventually leading to Native Americans, and then a role for Benjamin Franklin's illegitimate son William. It's based on the 2014 graphic novel by Richard McGuire, with a screenplay by Zemeckis and Eric Roth. Most of the nonlinear story covers a post-World War II family and the ups and downs of their lives from the late 1940s to the early 2000s. Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly play the parents of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. Hanks and Wright are severely de-aged and then re-aged over the course of the film using the magic of digital effects. While our reviews varied, this Zemeckis outing wasn't as painful as the previous three!
Christian returns to the show! In this episode, the gang discusses the Dodgers winning the World Series and the band Pretty Girls Make Graves. After that, things get serious as Christian talks about his kidney dilemma, and we dive into a conversation about anxiety and ADHD. Then, we talk about the great Robert Zemeckis and whether his new film Here measures up to his greatest works.
Robert Zemeckis' new film ‘Here,' adapted from Richard McGuire's graphic novel, depicts a family across a century of generations in the same home. Reggie “The Reel Critic” Ponder says the film's nonlinear timeline can be confusing at times, and it often looks to the past with nostalgia. On the red carpet at the 60th Chicago International Film Festival, Ponder spoke with Zemeckis, along with his wife Leslie Zemeckis and daughter Zsa Zsa Zemeckis. They discussed the film's themes, his growth as a director and what Zsa Zsa believes to be his “secret sauce.” This segment was hosted and produced by Reggie Ponder. This week, Dave gets boomerific yapping about the new Robert Zemeckis film HERE (3:14), starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, and a bunch of other actors who should have known better, as they tackle Zemeckis' latest blundered technology cry-fest. Gah. Then Megan and Evan talk about HIGH TIDE (13:54), Marco Calvani's queer love story, set in Provincetown, Mass., between a heartbroken undocumented Brazilian immigrant and a man leaving the country in a week. Finally, Dave and Megan discuss MUSIC BY JOHN WILLIAMS (34:36), which is a documentary about the storming of the Bastille. Weird that a documentary about the Bastille would be called MUSIC BY JOHN WILLIAMS, right? (Just kidding, it's a documentary about legendary film composer and jazz pianist John Williams. Dave has been sacked. - ed.) Over on Patreon, we loooooved the 1995 Denzel Washington-starring, Carl Franklin-directed DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS.
Friend of the Pod Morgan Gire returns to the pod to talk the movies of the great director Robert Zemeckis, who is known best for Back To The Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Forrest Gump, and many more. What are the hallmarks of a Zemeckis movie? We also talk about other great movies that people may not know he directed. What performances in Zemeckis movies are your favorite? What is his most overrated movie? And are you excited for "Here"? We talk all Zemeckis, plus a little movie I like to call "Used Cars". Tune in!

The one and only Carley Cooper returns to introduce Shawn to Robert Zemeckis' DEATH BECOMES HER. Sandwiched between two of Zemeckis' most-beloved films (Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Forrest Gump), Death Becomes Her has always been a bit neglected. But the film made major strides for the special effects industry, ultimately winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1993, and paving the way for CGI to thrive in film's like Jurassic Park. Does the film work beyond its landmark effects? Tune in to find out what Shawn and Carley think!HOSTSShawn EastridgeCarley Cooper
Director Greg Mottola (Superbad, Paul, and Confess, Fletch) joins Wampler and Vespe to talk about a very early outing for Steven Spielberg as producer: Used Cars. Written by Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, produced by Spielberg and John Milius, and directed by Zemeckis, this raunchy, cynical, absurd early '80s comedy starring Kurt Russell, Jack Warden, and Gerrit Graham seems made in a lab to be one of Scott Wampler's favorite movies. But... he didn't take to it. We dive into why that is as well as trade off Larry David impersonations, find out the status of Mottola's Fletch sequel, and dive into some of our favorite scenes from the movie.
