SEASON 2 - EPISODE 87 - STEFAN DECHANT - PRODUCTION DESIGNER Production designer Stefan Dechant (REBEL MOON, THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH, WELCOME TO MARWEN) joins us on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. We worked with Stefan on TRUE GRIT and JARHEAD, and it was great catching up with him. Like many other young boys of the 70s, Stefan became enchanted with STAR WARS, and (while attending school in Cincinnati, Ohio) lied his way to a gig working on JURASSIC PARK. His first love was storyboards, but he soon found his design and illustration skills best suited a career in art direction and production design. Stefan shares how his time drafting storyboards informs his approach to production design, and we also discuss the integration of emerging technologies in filmmaking today and tomorrow. We also hear about Stefan's experience working with director Joel Coen and cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel on THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH and learn how they carved the film's expressionistic and abstract sets out of light. - Recommended Viewing: THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH - This episode is sponsored by Godox
In this important movie we are challenged to get beyond the facade and get to know the depth, hurts, pains, and story of another person. All too often we do not take the time to understand why a person acts and behaves the way they do. But what happens when we do? We just might learn to accept the person right where they are because their story is important. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jeffrey-skopak/support
Welcome to the Following Films podcast! I'm Chris Maynard, your host. Today, I had the chance to sit down with Kim Miles, cinematographer on WELCOME TO MARWEN, the Michael J. Fox documentary film STILL, CHAMPIONS, and LOST OLLIE. I had Kim on the show to discuss his latest project the Netflix original series THE BROTHERS SUN. The story in THE BROTHERS SUN is set in motion when the head of a Taiwanese triad is shot by an assassin, his eldest son, Charles `Chairleg' Sun, heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother and brother, who's been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now. Before our conversation with Kim, I would like to thank our sponsor, Bookmans, an independent bookstore that believes in the magic of storytelling and the cinematic arts. If you're looking to expand your collection of films, music, or books, visit your nearest Bookmans and discover something truly wonderful. If you haven't already, please follow the Following Films podcast on Spotify to show your support. This will help us continue to bring you in-depth conversations with the talented individuals who shape the world of cinema. THE BROTHERS SUN premiers on Netflix on January 4th. I hope you enjoy the show! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support
On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are imagining that we're saving our friends from the worst scourge on the planet. We watched the 2018 film from Robert Zemeckis, Welcome to Marwen. We're encouraging you to do two things this week:Read up on Mark Hogancamp, the focus of this film, and watch the documentary Marwencol to get a first hand view of this fascinating person. If you're dealing with trauma of your own, seek out help and companionship. The story of Mark Hogancamp extends far beyond what's shown in this film and is worth your time. Steven touches on parts of the documentary in this episode, but there's a wealth of information out there. And as this film shows, there are always people out there who want you to be okay, no matter your circumstances. There are always people who want to be there for you. There is always a way through.(Recorded on June 14, 2023)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Welcome to Marwen - The Movie Database (TMDB)Welcome to Marwen trailer - YouTubeMarwencol (2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Robert Zemeckis — The Movie Database (TMDB)Cast Away (2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Team America: World Police (2004) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Avengers: Endgame (2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Polar Express (2004) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Steve Carell — The Movie Database (TMDB)Small Soldiers (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Blade (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Back to the Future (1985) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Little Miss Sunshine (2006) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Tom Hanks — The Movie Database (TMDB)Avatar (2009) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Mythic Quest (TV Series 2020- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Official Behind The Scenes Video | God of War: Ragnarok - YouTubeBenedict Cumberbatch - Behind-the-Scenes of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug - YouTubeBorn on the Fourth of July (1989) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the show

“Tim Burton had just Pee-wee's Big Adventure. He was at some point in the making of Beetlejuice. Our agency didn't know what to do with either of us with our off-kilter sensibility, so they introduced us, and we immediately felt a kinship and became friends. It was pretty clear from pretty early on that we wanted to work together. We threw out ideas. Among the ideas we talked about Tim mentioned to me a drawing he had made in high school of a character who had scissors instead of hands. And I said, ‘Stop right there!; First of all, this may surprise you, it was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard in my life, so I knew it was brilliant. It was so simple and so stupid and such an obvious metaphor, I knew that it had power beyond belief. I said, ‘Stop, I know exactly what to do with that!' ”Caroline Thompson was born in Washington, D.C. She grew up in a house full of books where she fell in love with horror novels, fantasy and children's classics. Her suburban neighborhood and favorite novel, Frankenstein, later inspired her horror novel, First Born, and first produced screenplay, Edward Scissorhands. Thompson continued to explore horror and fantasy in screenplays for The Addams Family, City of Ember, and Welcome To Marwen, and the stop-motion animation features, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. Inspired by the release of Freaky, featuring a new score by Bear McCreary, Matthew Sweet presents a selection of scores for films where characters have either lost track of who they are or who find themselves exchanging their name, their mind, or their body with another. The programme includes music from Gattaca, Spellbound, 3 Women, Desperately Seeking Susan, Welcome To Marwen, Oxygen, Total Recall, Face/Off, Hands Of Orlac, Self/Less, and Freaky. Robert Zemeckis put out one of the more disappointing sorta-big movies of 2020 with The Witches, so we convened a special career-spanning episode of the SportsAlcohol.com podcast to talk about his career in greater depth--both how the new movie falls short, and why we had high expectations for it to begin with. Join Marisa, Jesse, Nathaniel, and Jeremy as we talk about EVERY Zemeckis movie so far!
The guys decided to do one final spur-of-the-moment bonus episode to wrap up this season, so they took the trip on down to Marwen!

Oh folks, are you in for a quarantine treat. We've at long last uncovered the notorious "Welcome to Marwen" episode that essentially killed Ben's other podcast, "Head Cannon." Ben watches "Marwen" (TWICE!) and builds out a ten-point cinematic universe that includes prequels, sequels, spinoffs, remakes, porn parodies, you name it. For any "Dirty Sons of Pitches" fan, you'll finally be able to listen to what has been talked about for over a year between Ben and Nate, and "Head Cannon" is still available on podcast platforms. Enjoy Ben's suffering and bewilderment at this very misguided movie. Available on Spotify and ITunes

Hoo boy, this was a tough one folks. How to navigate the Hollywoodization of a real-life trauma with a dash of weird gender politics? Answer -- less funny than usual, as we discuss Welcome to Marwen. A new movie from Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis is generally a buzz-worthy event, but Welcome To Marwen alienated critics and died a swift death at the box office when released earlier this year. Starring Steve Carrell as a traumatised man living out his fantasies via a meticulously constructed model town populated by kick-ass female soldiers based on his real-world friends and colleagues, Welcome To Marwen is easily one of the oddest movies we've ever discussed on this podcast. Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on documentary vs Hollywood, some re-castings that might have improved this movie, the very broad accent work of Gwendoline Christie and more. As always, we also pitch up some good old fashioned drinking games in our efforts to make sense of this movie, and of course we round off with some of our own sequel ideas. Full disclosure - this week was a real challenge! ----- Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a look at a notable standalone movie and come together to pitch fantasy sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. From timeless classics to forgotten flops, we believe every movie deserves the chance to become a disappointing franchise! On April 8, 2000, Mark Hogancamp was attacked by five men and left for dead outside of a bar in Kingston, NY. After nine days in a coma, he awoke to find he had no memory of his previous adult life. He had to relearn how to eat, walk and write. When his state-sponsored rehabilitative therapies ran out, Mark took his recovery into his own hands. In his backyard, he created a new world entirely within his control - a 1:6 scale World War II town he named Marwencol. Using doll alter egos of his friends and family, his attackers and himself, Mark enacted epic battles and recreated memories, which he captured in strikingly realistic photographs. Those photos eventually caught the eye of the art world, which lead to a series of gallery exhibitions, the award-winning documentary "Marwencol," the acclaimed book "Welcome to Marwencol," and a new identity for a man once ridiculed for playing with dolls. That's the true story.
