Synopsis: This episode covers the Early Dynastic Period in Sumer and northern Syria. “Eannatum gave the great battle net of Enlil to the leader of Umma and made him swear to him by it. The leader of Umma swore to Eannatum: ‘By the life of Enlil, king of heaven and earth! I may exploit the field of Ningirsu as an interest-bearing loan. I shall not destroy the irrigation channel! Forever and evermore, I shall not transgress the territory of Ningirsu! I shall not shift the course of its irrigation channels and canals! I shall not smash its monuments! Whenever I do transgress, may the great battle net of Enlil, king of heaven and earth, by which I have sworn, descend upon Umma'.” – The Stele of the Vultures Original Episode Art by Mike Oeming: https://michaelavonoeming.com Map of SW Eurasia: https://audio.ancientworldpodcast.com/A3_Map.png Map of Sumer and Northern Syria (c. 2380 BC): https://audio.ancientworldpodcast.com/A3_Sumer.png Kings List: https://audio.ancientworldpodcast.com/A3_Kings.pdf Images: https://www.flickr.com/photos/75506172@N07/albums/72177720326251557/ References and Further Reading: https://audio.ancientworldpodcast.com/A3_References.pdf Please contact advertising@airwavemedia.com if you would like to advertise on this podcast. Then, just in time for this week's New Comic Book Day, Taki Soma and Michael talk about their amazing new mini-series DICK TRACY FOREVER. Somewhere in there, we also discuss Mario Bava, and how Mike and Brian Michael Bendis finish each other's sentences.

On this episode, Stevil, Jstebz and Matty Dub are beaking off about the Ghostbusters reboot announcement and how it is just another example of how Matty's childhood is being systematically destroyed by Hollywood. JStebz wonders why 'bustin only feels good for a dude and if any re-imagining of the Ghostbusters franchise would be accepted by fanboys. Matty assures listeners that a good movie would be a good movie, but thinks somethings should be sacred and left alone. We move on to our good friend Mike Oeming's new series for the Playstation Network. The trailer for Powers has dropped and it the gang is excited to see this comic series brought to life. More big news in episodicals, Twin Peaks is coming back in 2016 and Stevil is very excited. You can hear more of Stevil's thoughts on the Twin Peaks return in his segment with DrexLive on CKNW. JStebz was intrigued at the thought of raising money to stop a band from playing in her city after reading about the British gentleman who wanted to raise $1000 to ban Nickleback from performing. Matty has some strong opinions about artists who create music with computers, and JStebz quickly turns it around on him, making him something he despises. The Manchildren end this episode with a twisted game of Fuck, Marry, Kill, involving dead popstars, your mom and three versions of the same person.
Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction introduce us to a few of Oregon's other comics couples: Eugene's Mike and Laura Allred, and Portland's Taki Soma and Mike Oeming.
Thats right kids, Michael Avon Oeming is joining Stevil, Katie and Robster for an exciting episode of Booked! Of course we're talking about his body of work, including The Victories and Powers. We touch on the Powers TV pilot, the problems with Man of Steel, and we even throw some spoilers at Taki Soma. So put a bird on it, get your hipster on and listen to Booked! Big thanks to Michael Oeming for skyping in to chat with us, it was a pleasure!
Word Balloon Podcast The Comic Books Comeback Of Mike Oeming and DC VPs
On this episode of Word Balloon Fred Van Lente discusses the IDW release of The Comic Book History Of Comics, written by Fred and drawn by Ryan Dunleavy . The talk leads to the debate about fine artist Roy Lichenstien' s pop art paintings that were based on real comic book panels. Were these painting fine art celebrating design , like Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Can paintings, or outright plagiarizing comic artists like Mike Sekowsky and Russ Heath? Van Lente is also part of the Valiant Comics revival writing Archer and Armstrong coming out in August. We also talk about Fred's upcoming Hulk work, on the HULK Season One OGN with Tom Fowler , to this month's HULK SMASH #5 with Mike Oeming. Then the team behind Vertigo's new war OGN Shooters writers Eric Trautmann Brandon Jerwa and artist Steve Lieber join us to talk about the complicated life of a corporate contract soldier working for the US in current forgien conflicts. It's a very personal story for Trautmann, who based the story on his brother-in-law Dave. he trio talk about the book, and discuss their other recent projects including Jerwa's comic book film documentary, he and Trautmann's Dynamite books like Flash Gordon and Vamperella, and Lieber talks about the piracy experience he and Jeff Parker had with their Oni press mini series Underground.

On this edition of Word balloon , it's part four of The Bendis Tapes. More talk about Avengers Prime and New Avengers #1 plus you'll hear about Brian's one on one interview with writer/director David Mamet some San Diego announcements and recollections of little known career moments. Like the fact that Bendis was offered the chance to write the Dick Tracy Comic strip with art by Mike Oeming, but Warren Beatty's long standing option on the Tracy license squashed the plan. You'll hear about his early days in Cleveland assisting Mike Gustovich on things like The Justice Machine. Plus turning down such industry jobs as making foot fetish comics, and saying no to Mexican vampire comics which he would've drawn under the name “Manuel Sanchez “…it's true.
Join us for a huge cast this week as we talk to Mike Oeming and Bryan Glass of Mice Templar! Also, we talk Brightest Day #3, Avengers #1, and discuss whether the superhero genre of film is up, up and away or if it's culturally devoid of hope (and we don't mean the Mutant Messiah). And once again we play Devil/Nekron's Advocate with death and the DCU.
