Want to listen to this episode ad-free? Visit our Patreon! Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week on the show we have cosplay couple Aly Moon and Nick Woody to discuss their anniversary issue, a Gail Simone jam (Uncanny X-Men 18) where the well-intentioned mutant "Friendship Festival" goes sideways...and what that means for the future of their relationship. We play the X-Newlywed Game (how could we not?) and also on this episode: Wolverine throws up on Ferris wheels Horse Girl has a bad night Nightcrawler has a nice day The most on fire hospital Jubilee needs a better publicist What does any of this mean for their future as a soon-to-be married couple? Tune in to find out! Aly Moon (@Alymoonnn) is a Tennessee-based cosplayer, nail artist, lifelong Marvel nerd, and proud X-Men enthusiast. When she's not bringing superheroes to life through cosplay or creating nerdy nail art, she's probably found in her garden (because every good mutant needs a soft, earthy side too). Nicholas Woody, also known as TheComicCosplayer, is an extremely passionate cosplayer who loves bringing characters to life. Nightcrawler, Sentry, Ash Williams, and Mister Miracle are just a few examples of his portrayals. From horror movies like Evil Dead and The Shining, to comics such as Moon Knight, the new Marvel Ultimate Comics, and DC Black Label/Vertigo, and even gaming titles like Marvel Rivals and Dead by Daylight, to fandom-related content creation, Nicholas has fully embraced the geek lifestyle. When he's not traveling, creating, gaming, or thrifting, Nicholas enjoys the convention scene! Once a theater kid, always a theater kid—Nick's love for cosplay evolved from his love for acting and theater. Cosplay allows you to be whoever you want to be rather than hoping to play the role you want, which really drew him to the hobby. Formerly based in Texas, and now residing in central Tennessee, Nicholas looks forward to a bright future with his fiancé Aly as they share their passions together in geekdom. More of Lodro Rinzler's work can be found here and here and you can follow the podcast on Instagram at xmenpanelsdaily where we post X-Men comic panels...daily. When you first realized the scope of that responsibility, what felt most important to get right from the very beginning? You've spent years helping elevate underrepresented voices through Marvel's Voices—both the podcast and the comics—creating space for creators to tell stories that might otherwise be sidelined. How did that experience inform the way you approached First Freedom, especially when it came to deciding whose voices and perspectives needed to be centered? The book spans nearly 160 years of history, yet remains deeply personal. How did you decide when to zoom out to the larger historical context and when to stay tightly focused on Dr. Opal Lee's lived experience? There are moments in First Freedom where the art (Alvin Epps, Bex Glendining, and Millicent Monroe) carries the emotional weight as much as the words. Was there a scene where seeing the visuals for the first time changed or deepened how you felt about the story? P.S. I loved how your team used the mirror in the opening scene. You worked directly with Dr. Opal Lee and her granddaughter, Dione Sims, including extensive in-person interviews. What surprised you most about Dr. Lee once you spent real time with her beyond the public image? This book arrives during Black History Month and as part of a yearlong celebration of Dr. Lee's 100th year—but it also makes clear that the fight for freedom and recognition is ongoing. What do you hope readers, especially younger readers, take away from that tension? You've said this book is about much more than Juneteenth as a holiday—it's about everyday acts of activism and becoming, as you put it, a “committee of one.” How do you hope this story reframes what activism can look like?As a journalist, producer, and author, you've told many real-world stories across different media. What did the graphic novel format allow you to do emotionally or narratively that other formats wouldn't?

Friend of the show and Patreon backer Matt McThorn is back this week, and he wanted to return to one of is earlier themes, with three more stories featuring Thomas Blake, the Bat rogue known as Catman. We get a 90s story featuring Catman and Ratcatcher from before Catman turned super cool under the pen of Gail Simone. Then we see Blake meet Huntress and try to come off as suave in a Birds of Prey vs. the Secret Six story. And we wrap up with Catman and Bane in Gotham during Battle for the Cowl, trying really hard to honor the memory of Batman. It goes about as well as you'd expect. Batman has an 85-year legacy filled with reinvention. What made now the right time to bring the Dark Knight into the Skybox Metal Universe, and why was he chosen as the first DC hero to headline this line?2. Metal Universe is known for its cutting-edge printing innovations — from etched foil to die-cuts and lenticular cards. Can you walk us through the technology that makes these cards stand out physically in-hand and how that translates to the Gotham aesthetic?3. Each Metal Universe line has its own visual identity, whether cosmic, heroic, or elemental. How did your team translate Batman's world — all shadow, grit, and neon — into the visual language of the brand?4. This set spans decades of Gotham history. What was the process for selecting which eras, storylines, and character designs to include, and how did you balance nostalgia with innovation?5. The set features signatures from legendary creators like Gail Simone and Marv Wolfman. What does it mean to have the actual architects of Gotham's mythology participate in this project, and how do their cards fit into the collector experience?6. How do you feel about people selling these on ebay?7. How do you pick out art?8. Your thoughts on the use of a.i. art?8. Can you tease any product on the way?9. (Fun one!) If you were designing your own “Grant Sandground” insert card for the set, what kind of foil finish or chase rarity would it have — and which Gotham character would you want to share a dual card with?

What was it like returning to the X-office — and what new creative muscles did you want to flex with this run?The title Unbreakable X-Men is powerful — it implies resilience, unity, maybe even defiance. What does “unbreakable” mean to you in the context of this particular team, and how does that theme shape the story's tone? Both Uncanny and Unbreakable highlight complex, emotionally rich women like Rogue. How do you approach writing these characters in ways that balance their vulnerability with their strength — especially amid the chaos of mutantkind's latest era? You've always had a gift for team dynamics — the humor, friction, and found-family energy that make an ensemble tick. What did you want to explore about the X-Men's internal relationships here, and are there any pairings (friendly or otherwise) you especially loved writing? The X-Men have always represented survival and identity, and your run lands during a moment when the franchise is reexamining what those mean. How do you see Unbreakable X-Men contributing to that larger conversation about legacy and what it means to be a mutant now? You've written some of comics' most beloved team books — from Birds of Prey (with an Omnibus out this week!) to Secret Six. How does your time on Uncanny/Unbreakable X-Men compare to those experiences? In Predator Kills the Marvel Universe, you've teased a meditative tone as much as a brutal one. Can you talk about how you approached giving emotional weight to what could easily be a pure spectacle series?2. We know Frank Castle is at a low point in Punisher: Red Band, but you've also said it's a story about who Frank becomes when he has nothing left. What's the most surprising aspect of Frank you think readers will discover in this series?3. We here at AIPT have covered the use of the Punisher symbol via 3rd party swag outside of Disney, we even saw its use in the recent Daredevil show, what's your take on the Punisher logo and its use?4. With both Red Band and Predator Kills launching this year, you're leaning into stories with serious ultraviolence. As a writer, how do you decide when violence is meaningful versus when it's gratuitous?5. You mentioned in the Predator Kills the Marvel Universe press release that some heroes are more “killable” than others. Without giving anything away, was there a particular Marvel character that was the hardest to write a death for—either logistically or emotionally?6. You've done a lot of work balancing character legacy with reinvention—especially with Hellverine and now Red Hulk. How do you decide what to preserve and what to explode when you're writing these kinds of legacy figures?7. Spider-Man and Predator is a wild matchup. Can you tease what their conflict reveals about Peter Parker that we haven't seen before?8. Both Red Hulk and Hellverine feel like "dark mirror" characters—but wildly different in tone and execution. Do you see thematic overlap between them? How do you avoid them becoming just monstrous versions of other heroes?9. You're clearly building (or helping shape) a kind of hyper-violent sublabel within Marvel between Red Band, Predator crossovers, and these monstrous anti-heroes. Would you want to keep expanding this “Percy-verse”? And if so, who would you tap next?10. (Fun one): If Predator could take on one Marvel team in a cooking competition, who would it be—and what's Predator's signature dish?Short novel as a newspaper - subscribe - start November - post-apocalyptic “The End Times” Station 11 meets our townbadhandbooks.com

"Women in Refrigerators": Understanding Fridging in Superhero MediaIn this eye-opening episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki tackle the controversial topic of "fridging" with special guest Jessica Plummer, a comic book historian with expertise in gender representation. The term "fridging," coined by comic writer Gail Simone in 1999, refers to the killing, maiming, or assault of female characters primarily to advance a male character's storyline. What exactly is fridging and where did the term come from? The term "women in refrigerators" originated from a 1994 Green Lantern issue where Kyle Rayner's girlfriend Alexandra DeWitt was murdered and stuffed in a refrigerator by villain Major Force. This served solely to motivate Kyle's character development and revenge arc. The podcast explores how this pattern repeats across comics, films, and TV shows, with female characters frequently introduced only to be brutalized for male character development. Why is fridging problematic beyond just character death? The discussion highlights how fridging isn't just about women dying - it's about the specific ways their bodies are violated and displayed, often in sexualized or gratuitously violent ways. The hosts examine how female characters are disproportionately subjected to these fates compared to male characters, despite already being underrepresented in superhero media to begin with. How does fridging differ from other character deaths? The podcast examines the key differences between fridging and other character deaths. Male characters often die heroically in battle with "noble sacrifices" and frequently return from death, while female characters are more commonly assaulted in domestic settings like kitchens, portrayed as helpless victims rather than heroes making choices, and rarely return from death. What about fridging and race in media? The conversation expands to discuss similar patterns with characters of color, who are often introduced as side characters only to be killed to motivate white protagonists. While the panel debates whether "fridging" should specifically refer to violence against women or could apply more broadly, they agree the core issue is about which characters get to be protagonists versus disposable plot devices.Other topics discussed:The original Green Lantern fridging incident that gave the trope its nameHow Black Widow's death in Avengers: Endgame exhibits elements of fridgingThe repeated visual motif of female character deaths (like Gwen Stacy's fall)Examples of media that subvert fridging expectations, like John Wick and DaredevilHow some characters have "climbed out of the fridge" through character resurrection and reimaginingWriters and creators who have worked to challenge and change this tropeThe relationship between shock value and fridging**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. What inspired this narrative, and how does it reflect on societal structures?Character Design: With twelve unique assassins in the story, what was your approach to designing each character to ensure they stood out visually and thematically? We're in a real horror renaissance in comics right now—whether it's the resurgence of EC-style anthologies, a wave of creator-owned horror books, or even Marvel events like Blood Hunt. How did Exquisite Corpses aim to stand out in such a crowded and creatively rich horror landscape? You mentioned in Kieron Gillen's newsletter you're now prioritizing creator-owned work and writing for yourself—but with so many collaborative roles still in play (writer, artist, visual coordinator), how do you protect your own creative bandwidth? Jim Calafiore has established himself as one of comics' most distinctive and versatile artists over a career spanning three decades. Known for his dynamic layouts and expressive character work, Jim first gained recognition at Valiant in the early 90s, working on titles like Armorines and Magnus, Robot Fighter. From there, it was on to DC and Marvel, where he contributed to series including Aquaman, Deadpool, Secret Six with writer Gail Simone, and a defining run on the X-men offshoot Exiles. After reteaming with Simone on the Kickstarter-funded graphic novel Leaving Megalopolis, Jim caught the crowdfunding bug, and introduced his latest venture, NED, Lord of the Pit, to the world, writing and drawing two volumes of supernatural comedic action in the series so far. You can follow Jim on his website at jimcalafiore.com or on Instagram @jimcalafiore.Support the show

In today's Daily Fix:Sony has revealed the lineup of new games coming to PlayStation Plus in March. Headlining the list is Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which is a fairly new game, having dropped just a few months ago. The fourth Dragon Age game failed to hit EA's sales goals, so putting the game on PS Plus so soon is likely an attempt at recouping some cash. In other news, BioWare's co-founder put Microsoft on blast for some bad advice during the original Xbox era. It was Microsoft's suggestion that cult favorite RPG Jade Empire be released for the OG Xbox right at the end of its life, just a few months shy of the Xbox 360's debut. Dr. Greg Zeschuk is convinced Jade Empire could've been a hit for BioWare if the game was held for newer hardware. And finally, comic book writer Gail Simone has seen the canceled Wonder Woman game, and is singing its praises. Too bad we'll never get to see for ourselves.
Beginning an in-depth look at the life and times of Kyle Rayner, a new Green Lantern for a new era! It's 1994, sales on the Green Lantern comic are down, and with anniversary issue #50 on the horizon, DC is looking to revitalize the title. New writer Ron Marz is brought on board with a mission: replace Silver Age stalwart Hal Jordan with a new character (in a new costume designed by incoming regular penciler Darryl Banks). The introduction of freelance-artist-turned-superhero Kyle led to Green Lantern climbing the charts, but it also courted controversy by turning Hal into a megalomaniacal villain and through a scene that would later inspire Gail Simone to create the website “Women in Refrigerators.” Discussed in this episode: Green Lantern #48-58 and #0, plus crossover issues of R.E.B.E.L.S. ‘94 and New Titans
It's Uncanny X-Men #5 and it might just be wrapping up arc #1!! What part of the issue broke Lauren's heart? What does she wanna fight (lovingly and half jokingly) Gail Simone about? Who could be more manipulative than Charles Xavier? And.. is Kurt and his swashbuckling self okay? Join Lisa and Lauren as they talk all about Uncanny X-Men (2024) #5, with some asides about The Runaways and Agatha All Along, and whatever the heck else they came up with! Maybe even Glee? Stick around till the end for a profound message on Prayer that Lisa and Lauren think Nightcrawler would believe in

Reporting live from San Diego Comic-Con, we're chatting with Gail Simone about everything she has going on at the moment, including the incredible Misty 2024 Special from Rebellion Publishing. When editors first approached her with the project, she'd never read the previous British series. However, after a few issues, Simone was hooked and saw her way into Misty's world, so some updates would have to occur. The Misty 2024 Special features three tales written by Gail Simone and illustrated by Carola Borelli, Aly Fell, and Marianna Ignazzi, plus a final story scripted and drawn by Letty Wilson. Each short takes on a different perspective and message, but all are snuggled comfortably within the horror genre. Simone is a thematically forward writer, and it was a treat to dig into her mission for each of these macabre yarns. Initially created by Pat Mills and published in 1978, Misty was designed to appeal to women, but male readers came along for the ride (and the pretty pictures). Gail Simone modifies Misty's thematic and narrative points of view, basically doing what she did for Birds of Prey and the superhero genre, but for Misty and horror. The Misty 2024 Special is currently available across the pond and will arrive on American shores on August 21st. Wrapped with a gorgeous Tula Lotay cover, this item is not to be missed. Also, as announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Gail Simone is writing more Misty stories. So, it's best to get aboard as soon as possible. Follow Gail Simone on Twitter and Instagram. And be on the lookout for our future San Diego Comic-Con coverage. We're talking to folks like Jason Aaron, James Tynion IV, Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson, Daniel Sampare, Tom King, Mariko Tamaki, Ram V, and more.
