Tausret, Siptah, Bay, and the case of Paneb. By 1210 BCE, the southern rebellion was dying down, but trouble was far from over. The courtier Bay appears on the scene, first as an agent of Sety II, then as a "kingmaker" in his own right. Tausret increases her power, becoming a regent figure (like Hatshepsut). The young ruler Siptah, physically enfeebled and of uncertain heritage, provides a veil of legitimacy for a new triumvirate. Meanwhile, in Deir el-Medina, the foremen/chiefs Hay and Paneb deal with serious allegations... Enaindvajsetega februarja je minilo 140 let od rojstva Franceta Steleta, utemeljitelja umetnostne zgodovine na Slovenskem. Deloval je kot prvi poklicni konservator, univerzitetni profesor, urednik, likovni kritik in akademik. Dr. Milček Komelj je ob tej priložnosti in sprva na pobudo Umetnostnozgodovinskega inštituta Franceta Steleta ZRC SAZU napisal knjigo France Stele: Spomini nanj, na njegovo delo in učence - knjiga je izšla v sozaložništvu Slovenske matice (Milček Komelj je bil med letoma 2008 in 2018 tudi njen predsednik) in ZRC SAZU. V spominsko-esejističnem besedilu opiše Steletovo duhovno in intelektualno dediščino, njegov odnos do umetnosti kot nosilke narodove identitete in njegov vpliv na učence. Z dr. Milčkom Komeljem, umetnostnim zgodovinarjem, doktorjem znanosti, članom Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti in članom Evropske akademije znanosti in umetnosti, pesnikom in esejistom se o knjigi pogovarja Aleksandra Saška Gruden.

György Kurtág ist ein Meister der Miniatur. Viele seiner Werke dauern nur wenige Minuten, einzelne Sätze zum Teil nur Sekunden. „Splitter“, „Zeichen“, „Fragmente“ – so bezeichnet der Komponist oft selbst seine Werke. Und gleichzeitig steckt für Kurtág im Kleinsten ein ganzer Kosmos. Seine Miniaturen sind Szenen, die viel mit uns und unserem Leben zu tun haben: Kleine Bühne, die die Welt bedeuten. Anlässlich des 100. Geburtstag des Komponisten beleuchtet SWR-Musikredakteur Rafael Rennicke in seiner dreiteiligen Reihe „Kurtág-Fragmente“ einige Werke Kurtágs nun selbst in fragmentarischer Form: ausschnitthaft, aber doch als Versuch, gerade im Bruchstück die Botschaft von Kurtágs Musik zu erkennen.

Alte Rätsel lösen, geheimnisvolle Schriften entziffern: Gibt es was Spannenderes? Um das Jahr 1800 wollten Europas Wissenschaftler die ägyptische Bilderschrift entschlüsseln, die Hieroglyphen. Damit kamen sie aber erst weiter, als ihnen der "Stein von Rosetta" in die Hände fiel. In dieses damals etwa 2000 Jahre alte Fragment einer Stele waren drei Textblöcke gemeißelt - in Hieroglyphen, in Altgriechisch und in einer damals noch unbekannten Schrift. Altgriechisch immerhin konnten die Wissenschaftler. In den anderen zwei Texten vermuteten sie den gleichen Inhalt - und so half ihnen dieser legendäre Stein, das Rätsel der Hieroglyphen endlich zu lösen.

The Tel Dan Stele is arguably the most important artifact ever discovered in the world of biblical archaeology, containing the earliest confirmed mention of King David. Shoftim | The Prohibition of "Raising" a Stele, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom Why is the matzeiva described as "abhorred by God"?  In the middle of the presentation of the laws of the Beit Din HaGadol (the central national court), the Torah interjects three seemingly disconnected prohibitions - planting a tree near the altar, raising a stele (מצבה) and offering a blemished animal. We address the middle of these passages and note the curious phrasing of the prohibition - אשר שנא ה' אלקיך and observe that both אשר as well as שנא has multiple possible meanings within the verse. We then briefly survey the history of the מצבה in the narrative of the תורה, where it seems to have Divine approval - and then we see three main approaches in the Midrashim and the Rishonim, each with its own difficulties. We then suggest a variation of one of these approaches, based on a careful reading of our text. We find again in this lesson that God comes against the law codes of the ancient Near East.  One such code is the Code of Hammurabi who was the sixth Amorite king of the Old Babylonian Empire, reigning from c. 1792 to c. 1750 BC.  His code is 282 laws written 300 years before the Exodus.  In this code any thief is to be executed.  This is seemingly regardless of the theft or the seriousness of the crime.  Just imagine that shoplifters who come in gangs to steal and rob from retail stores today would all be caught and killed in ancient Babylon.  Below you can see the Stele of Hammurabi – on this stone pillar the 282 laws of Hammurabi are engraved.  This picture is royalty free and is accessible at Wikimedia. SynopsisIt's said that Nature abhors a vacuum – and so, apparently, did Richard Wagner, who devised a brass instrument to bridge a gap he perceived between the horns and the trombones in the orchestra of his day. And so the "Wagner tuba" was born, a brass instrument Wagner designed for the 1876 premiere of his cycle of four Ring operas in Bayreuth, Germany, which began on today's date that year with Das Rheingold – the first opera in the Ring cycle.Other composers have also scored for Wagner tubas, including Anton Bruckner and Richard Strauss, both ardent Wagner fans, and also Igor Stravinsky, who, though certainly not a Wagnerite, did include Wagner tubas in the early versions of some of his famous ballet scores.Some contemporary composers include parts for the Wagner tuba in their works as well, and a quartet of these instruments appears in a 1994 score the Hungarian composer, György Kurtág wrote for the Berlin Philharmonic and its then music director, Claudio Abbado.
