Christopher Priest is one of the most influential writers in modern comics, known for his sharp wit, intricate storytelling, and groundbreaking contributions to the industry. He began his career at Marvel, becoming the company's first Black editor and working on titles like The Amazing Spider-Man and Power Man and Iron Fist before transitioning to writing full-time. His breakthrough came with Quantum and Woody for Valiant Comics, and he later redefined Black Panther in the late ‘90s, crafting the now-iconic interpretation that influenced the MCU. Priest has also left his mark on Deathstroke and Justice League for DC, Captain America and the Falcon for Marvel, and more recently, Vampirella for Dynamite, proving his storytelling prowess across genres and publishers. His new Vampirella #1 comes out today, 3/26, and his new collaboration with Joe Quesada, Marvel Knights: The World to Come, was just announced for a June release. Up, up, and oh no! This week, V and Emily take a request from listener @nerteragranadensis a little bit sideways and look at the ways that the "Death of Superman" arc -- geez, '90s DC had problems -- almost ended the American comics industry as it blew up the boom-and-bust comics speculation culture that arose after 1989's Batman movie. We look at how money is dumb, how capitalism is stupid, and also, why we're super salty about Beanie Babies. The Man of Steel deserved better. This week Carl Smith of Becoming Valiant: A Valiant Comics Podcast joins Jason to talk about one of the more oddball intriguing stories of comics-to-film. You might never have heard of Valiant Comics, but it's possible that if COVID had never happened, Valiant would be a household name these days. See, their big-screen debut, Bloodshot, hit just as Coronavirus shutdowns hit the world. That means nobody ended up seeing the film and that caused the Valiant Cinematic Universe to die before it was ever born. Carl and Jason talk Bloodshot along with a fan-produced Valiant film, and try to decide which one is better: the ultra-cheap YouTube vid or the longform, expensive Vin Diesel film from Sony. Umm, we might have telegraphed the answer to that question, but we think you'll enjoy this episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-sacks/message

Acomi and Turk182, with guest Generic, inject themselves with nanites to help ease the physical discomfort of sitting through the Vin Diesel comic book disaster Bloodshot (2020). Released by Valiant Comics in 1992, Bloodshot is about a man brought back to life with the use of nanites; which repairs all damage to his reanimated body and keep him alive. With his technological immortality, he seeks revenge against the people that killed him. Family. Following one of the rebooted comic versions, Vin's Bloodshot is being manipulated by the company the resurrected him into being their cyborg assassin. Using implanted false memories to make him seek vengeance against the people he believes murdered him. But, there'll be hell to pay, if he finds out the truth! Family. Join Acomi, Turk, and Generic as they pretend to care about a movie that's as convoluted and knotted as Christmas tree lights, but not as much fun. Who is the pale nanite powered man really? And, why does his live his life a quarter mile at a time? To find out, you have to get Bloodshot (2020). Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. The hosts select movies that either one, or both, have never seen. Joe comic and the property as a whole. Jim Shooter is an American comics creator, editor, and publisher. He made his start writing Legion of Super-Heroes when he was only fourteen years old, He served as the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics from 1978 to 1987 and during this time launched G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero in 1982, gave Larry Hama the writing gig and has editor in chief credits up to issue 64. After leaving Marvel he founded several comics companies including Valiant Comics, Defiant Comics and Broadway Comics. YouTube video is here. The audio only version should be broadly the same content - the audio quality is better, and has been edited down more carefuly. The benefit of the video is that we are all on screen and i share a few images on screen, but largely for colour rather than essential for understanding. https://youtu.be/7Hu7UMIajHM We talk about - Licensed Properties at Marvel in the 1980s - The general conditions for Marvel, teetering on bankruptcy, and owners who had no interest in comics. - How Marvel was approached for G.I. Joe and the initial steps to putting together the book. - The parallels and differences with the launch of Transformers at Marvel. - And so much more besides!
