This is the second half of the podcast chat with Dan, The Great Curator (on IG @the.great.curator). In our first half of the conversation (Episode 49, published way back on November 9th), we talked about particip-hation, blocking trolls, the state of content in The Hobby. In this episode, we talk about how people monetize content in The Hobby (#5 will shock you! JK those click bait lists are funny to me). We also get into questions from listeners (including yes, Rob G. the Sports Card Therapist, because this was recorded around Halloween time, and well, a lot happens in a month in The Hobby!). Questions pertained to Dan's grail, hobby goals for 2024, whether heel/face status matters for wrestling cards, Arena Club and lesser frequented marketplaces and auction houses, fiduciary duty in taking on sponsorships, and why is he the way he is. Finally, shoutout Dan The Great Curator's sponsor, Mr. Minty. And Merlin, the happiest person in The Hobby.
EPISODE 175 - Clark and Hyung open the show giving their initial thoughts on the 2023 Topps Definitive Collection set including the big chase, the dual autograph 1/1 cards of Shohei Ohtani and Babe Ruth, and whether it's worth the $100K bounty. Then for Hobby Headlines, the guys address the controversy surrounding Rob G., aka Sports Card Therapist, but focus more on what lessons can be learned from it. They also talk about "megabids" as well as what they would do as a content creator if caught in a similar controversy. Then Clark and Hyung "cast their vote" in a new segment on recent lists that Major League Baseball put out asking followers who they think could win their first MVP next season, which rookie can rise to stardom in 2024, and who could get into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. Then the guys bring it back to the hobby and decide whether they would invest in that player's cards. Lastly, they play their regular "Pick 1" segment where they are given two players or cards and subsequently debate which one they would rather invest in. Hyung asks whether the aforementioned 1/1 dual autograph card of Ohtani and Babe Ruth is a better investment or a 1933 Babe Ruth Goudey; Clark asks which would be better to buy – a Jackson Chourio base 1st Bowman Chrome autograph at $800 or a Jackson Holliday base 1st Bowman Chrome autograph at $500 (both PSA 10s). -------------------------- CONNECT WITH US! On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) share their thoughts on the NBA's decision to suspend Draymond Green one game for stomping on the chest of Domantas Sabonis in Game 2. Green's history of unsportsmanlike behavior absolutely played a role in the decision - and for good reason; The NBA had to take a stand. The only question now becomes whether or not this will be the straw that breaks the camel's back and leads to Golden State parting ways with Green after the season. Later, the guys hit us with their rapid fire reaction to all of the NBA's Tuesday night playoff action. Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns evened things up with the Los Angeles Clippers, but they didn't look very impressive in the process. In fact, J-Mac and Rob G actually have more questions about Phoenix now than ever before. In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Celtics reminded us once again why the guys both picked them to win the NBA championship, while the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks appear destined to play a long series. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) get the party started with a preview of the Western Conference Playoffs first round matchup between the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers. Our fearless leader says that Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Co. will sweep the Clippers, while Rob G argues that Russell Westbrook will thoroughly outplay Chris Paul before Phoenix ultimately prevails in six games. Later, the guys share their thoughts on Damian Lillard's public cries for help coming out of Portland. It's been clear for years that the Trail Blazers best route out of NBA purgatory would be to trade Dame. Could that actually come to fruition this summer? If so, which teams make the most sense as Lillard's next landing spot? On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) gets things started with a deep dive into the viral sideline skirmish between Minnesota Timberwolves teammates Rudy Gobert and Kyle Anderson. With Anthony Davis and LeBron James looming in the play-in game on Tuesday, the T'Wolves absolutely cannot afford to suspend Gobert. Moreover, given what Minnesota has already invested in Gobert, they have no choice but to publicly back him. Later, the guys share their thoughts on the tumultuous weekend that was for Luka Doncic and the Mavericks. Now that Dallas has officially been eliminated from playoff contention, all eyes turn to the upcoming offseason and Kyrie Irving's looming free agency. Outside of re-signing Kyrie to a fully-guaranteed max contract (which nobody feels great about), Mark Cuban and the Mavs have limited avenues to actually improve the roster around Luka. Finally, J-Mac and Rob G close the show by discussing Odell Beckham Jr's decision to sign a one-year, $15 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens. If the arrival of OBJ means that Lamar Jackson will re-sign as well, then the move makes a ton of sense for Baltimore. If it doesn't, then the Ravens could come to regret this one. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) gets things started by waxing poetically on LSU's win over Iowa in the NCAA Tournament Women's National Championship game. The only problem, however, was that much of the conversation after the game focused on Angel Reese's taunt of Caitlin Clark in the final seconds. The whole thing reeks of faux outrage. What's more, the mere fact that this even became ‘a thing' proves that women's college basketball is on an upward trajectory. Later, the guys share their thoughts on the wild Western Conference playoff race and get into a mini debate over where Anthony Davis ranks amongst the best players in the West. J-Mac and Rob G follow that up by discussing the Dallas Mavericks' fall from grace and wonder aloud whether this season has proven that you can't win a championship playing Luka Doncic's ball-dominant style of basketball. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) get things started by recapping day 1 of the NCAA Tournament. Outside of perpetual disappointments Virginia and Arizona going down in the afternoon, it really was a rather uneventful day. However, the Round of 32 games on Saturday are looking extra spicy as two #1 seeds (Houston and Kansas) could be on upset alert. Later, the guys dive deep into the week that was for the Las Vegas Raiders. Rob G – a noted Raiders fan – isn't feeling the acquisition of Jimmy Garoppolo or the trade of Darren Waller, while J-Mac is cautiously optimistic that Josh McDaniels can turn things around in year two if they can hit on their draft picks. Finally, the guys close the show by discussing relatively soft trade markets for Austin Ekeler and Lamar Jackson. Both guys are All-Pro caliber players… so why hasn't anyone made an offer? On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) hit us with an instant reaction podcast to the blockbuster trade that saw the Brooklyn Nets send Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns for Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson and a boatload of first round picks. The guys agree the move instantly puts the Suns back into NBA championship contention, but disagree on whether or not it makes Phoenix the favorites in the Western Conference. Devin Booker - like Durant - will be coming off a serious injury and Chris Paul has been looking rather washed recently. On the flip side, after trading away both KD and Kyrie Irving in less than a week, it's hard to figure out what the Nets' plan is moving forward. They have a glut of forwards and a treasure trove of draft picks, but no real franchise cornerstone players to build around. Something tells us Brooklyn will continue to be active on the trade market in the hours leading up to the trade deadline. Finally, J-Mac and Rob G close the show by sharing their thoughts on the Los Angeles Lakers' decision to trade Russell Westbrook for D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt. This move makes the Lakers better but not so much where you'd consider them to be legitimate contenders in the West... even less so now that KD is in Phoenix. By trading Westbrook the Lakers essentially just rearranged the deck chairs on the Titanic. **Apologies for the audio quality on today's podcast. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) bring you wall-to-wall analysis of the NFL Divisional round playoff action. First up, following yet another disappointing playoff exit, all eyes will be on Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys. The guys disagree regarding exactly how much blame Dak deserves for what went wrong against the San Francisco 49ers, but they do agree that Dallas' future is murky at best given how many key players are free agents (Tony Pollard and Dalton Schultz, to name a few) and how big Dak's cap number is moving forward. On the flip side, Brock Purdy did just enough to get the win for San Francisco, but with Jimmy Garoppolo set to return from his injury, are we 100% certain he won't get a quick hook if things go awry in the NFC Championship game? Moving over to the AFC, it's become abundantly clear after their blowout loss to Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals that something is amiss with the Buffalo Bills. When a team flames out at home like that you have to wonder whether or not head coach Sean McDermott is still the man for the job moving forward. McDermott is easily the biggest loser of the weekend; if the Bills' ownership had any intestinal fortitude at all they'd put in a call to Sean Payton and gauge his interest in the job. Quickly looking ahead to the AFC Championship game, both guys agree as of now that the Bengals have to be the side given the uncertainty surrounding Patrick Mahomes and his gimpy ankle. We'll dive deeper into this one as the week goes on once more information becomes available regarding Mahomes' health. Finally, the J-Mac and Rob G close the show by diving deep into Daniel Jones and whether or not he should be considered the quarterback of the future for the New York Giants. Jones was mediocre at best against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he's also been working with arguably the worst receiving corps in the NFL. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) get the party started by sharing their thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys' blowout victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was the proverbial nail in the coffin of the Tom Brady Era in Tampa Bay. Brady - along with a slew of other veterans - is on his way out the door and now it's time to speculate where he might end up. Will he link back up with Josh McDaniels and the Las Vegas Raiders? Will the Brady to the Miami Dolphins rumors finally come to fruition? Will be just hang up his cleats (again) and retire? This will definitely be the biggest story of the offseason. Later, the guys share their thoughts on who they believe to be the biggest winners and losers of NFL Wild Card Weekend. A few of the answers my surprise you! Finally, J-Mac and Rob G close the show by discussing Sean Payton's future as the NFL's Coaching Carousel continues to turn. The Los Angeles Chargers seem to be the most obvious landing spot but sometimes when something is that obvious it doesn't actually come to fruition. Perhaps a team like the Denver Broncos or Carolina Panthers can swoop in and steal Payton's services. Either way, it seems pretty clear that the NFL's ongoing courtship of Sean Payton was enough to push Jim Harbaugh back to the University of Michigan. Hard to imagine he would've been cool serving as another team's 'safety school'. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) bring you wall-to-wall coverage of NFL Wild Card Weekend. We've been told that the NFL is a Quarterback League so naturally guys like Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley went toe-to-toe with MVP candidates Josh Allen and Joe Burrow. However, it's clear that the one guy who 'won' the weekend is New York Giants signal caller Daniel Jones. Jones out-dueled Kirk Cousins in what was easily his best game of the season. The question then now becomes whether or not Jones has shown enough over the last two months to solidify himself as the Giants' franchise quarterback moving forward. On the flip side, the clear 'losers' of the weekend were Los Angeles Chargers, who blew a 27-0 lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brandon Staley showed once again that he's not quite cut out to be the head coach of an NFL with Super Bowl aspirations. If the Chargers weren't such a historically cheap franchise they would seem like a lock to nab Sean Payton to be their next head coach this offseason. Moreover, Rob G argues that a loss like the one the Chargers suffered proves once and for all that Justin Herbert should no longer be included in the group of elite quarterbacks. Is Herbert an elite QB, or is he just the second coming of the Detroit Lions version of Matthew Stafford? Finally, the guys close the show by previewing tonight's game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Are the Bucs being oversold in this spot? Is Mike McCarthy's job on the line? The guys have the answers to those questions - and more! On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) get the party started by sharing their thoughts on Luka Doncic's historic stat line against the New York Knicks. Luka is an absolute monster who has been putting up absurd numbers for years and his greatness has almost become under-appreciated at this point. With that in mind, the guys debate whether or not night's like this are meant to be celebrated given that he's the level of player who will only be judged by championships... and most agree this Dallas Mavericks team isn't good enough to win a title. Later, the guys take a few minutes to discuss the Denver Broncos head coaching search. The new ownership plans to take a hands-on approach moving forward and essentially make the general manager obsolete, while simultaneously building around a washed up version of Russell Wilson. Can you really expect any new coach to succeed with that level of disfunction around the team? Finally, J-Mac and Rob G close the show by explaining why Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are a decent long-shot bet to win the NFC. The uncertainty surrounding Jalen Hurts has really opened things up for the rest of the field and none of the remaining favorites (San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings) are without serious questions. Having said that, would it really be all that shocking if the suddenly-streaking Packers make a run to the Super Bowl? On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) reunite to hit you with a cornucopia of hot takes on all the biggest headlines around the world of sports. First off, the Las Vegas Raiders are suddenly one of the hottest teams in the NFL. With their remaining schedule littered with backup quarterbacks (Los Angeles Rams / San Francisco 49ers) and mediocre opposition (New England Patriots / Pittsburgh Steelers), it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Raiders run the table the rest of the regular season. Sticking in the AFC, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is dealing with a knee injury, and given how banged up the rest of the roster is around him, would you really blame Jackson for just shutting it down the rest of the season? Moving over to the NBA, Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers have been on an absolute tear as of late (even if they did lose on the road in Cleveland on Tuesday night after AD left the game due to illness). Given what we've seen from them recently, is it fair to say that the Lakers have a legitimate path towards championship contention? Obviously they still need to make a trade or two to really elevate themselves but the idea doesn't seem as farfetched as it did early in the season. Finally, J-Mac and Rob G close the show by taking Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young to task for skipping his team's game on Friday night and trying to evade reporter questions about it a few days later. Young has had an uneven reputation for some time now and this certainly didn't help his cause. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) bring the excitement to what had been a rather mundane NFL Sunday. First off, it's become painfully obvious that the New York Jets have a Zach Wilson problem. The second-year quarterback should've been benched in the Jets' ugly loss to the New England Patriots. He's missing open receivers, he's throwing the ball into coverage and worst of all he seems oblivious to the impact he's having on the rest of his teammates. Whether it happens during the season or in the offseason, the Jets will certainly be making a quarterback change. Speaking of quarterbacks, fresh off the latest Los Angeles Chargers collapse, Rob G believes it's time that we have an honest conversation about Justin Herbert. Herbert has elite tools, but is he really an elite quarterback? He doesn't win games as often as you'd expect and his numbers this season have been mostly middle-of-the-road. Moving over to the NFC, it's clear after the Dallas Cowboys' blowout victory on the road in Minnesota that Kirk Cousins and the Vikings are frauds. How else do you explain away an 8-2 team having a negative point differential? Outside of a miraculous win over the Buffalo Bills last week, the Vikings have been destroyed every time they step up in class. On the flip side, Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys proved on Sunday that the overtime loss last week against the Green Bay Packers was an aberration and that they should be viewed as legitimate Super Bowl contenders coming out of the NFC; Just imagine if Dallas can find a way to land Odell Beckham Jr. Finally, the guys close the show with a very special Monday Night Football San Francisco 49ers-Arizona Cardinals edition of the Best Bet. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) bring you wall-to-wall reaction to Week 10 in the NFL. The Minnesota Dolphins earned a shocking win over the Bills to keep their homes of earning #1 seed in the NFC in-play, but the big story here is what's going on in Buffalo. Josh Allen has officially been eliminated from MVP consideration. His rollercoaster play so far this season (big plays and brutal turnovers) has cost the Bills several games on the year, and now it's not even a lock that Buffalo wins the AFC East. Sticking in the AFC, has any team been more disappointing than the Las Vegas Raiders? Josh McDaniels and the boys lost to the Jeff Saturday-led Indianapolis Colts to fall to 2-7 on the season. It's unfathomable that McDaniels could take over a playoff team from last year, add Davante Adams and Chandler Jones, and have the team actually get worse. On the flip side, one AFC team that has surpassed all preseason expectations is the Miami Dolphins. J-Mac and Rob G seem pretty split on Tua Tagovailoa and the fellas at this point in the season; Is Miami a legitimate Super Bowl contender or just the product of a soft schedule? Either way, the next few weeks should give us the answer. Moving over to the NFC, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is taking a ton of heat this morning for his controversial 4th down call in the Cowboys' overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers. But rather than tearing down Dallas, shouldn't we be giving Green Bay kudos for having the patience and discipline to stick to a ground game that ultimately broke the Dallas defense? On this special Halloween episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) kick things off with a deep dive into the NFC Playoff picture heading into the midway point of the season. The addition of Christian McCaffrey has made the San Francisco 49ers offense downright scary. In fact, our fearless leader is already claiming that he'd take the Niners to beat the Philadelphia Eagles on the road should the two meet in the NFC Championship Game. On the flip side, Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers continue to disappoint, and it's looking more and more likely that The Pack will miss the postseason altogether unless they make a big move at tomorrow's trade deadline. In fact, the guys agree that it's likely - if not probable - that two of the preseason NFC favorites (Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams) will end up missing the playoffs altogether. Later, Rob G and J-Mac take a few minutes to vent their frustrations after their beloved Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets both laid clunkers in Week 8 on the heels of what had been impressive wins in Week 7. The Jets may still end up making the playoffs, but if they do, it won't be because Zach Wilson led them there. You could actually make the case that Wilson is the fourth best quarterback to come out of the wildly disappointing 2021 Quarterback class featuring Wilson, Trevor Lawrence, Mac Jones, Justin Fields and Trey Lance. And yet, as bad as the Jets played, the one base that deserves the most pity on Monday morning is the Carolina Panthers. The referees absolutely hosed Carolina with that ridiculous unsportsmanlike penalty after DJ Moore caught what many thought was the game-winning touchdown pass in the final seconds. The NFL has to get that fixed this offseason. Finally, the guys close the show with a few quick thoughts on a handful of NBA topics, including: the Los Angeles Lakers getting their first win, the sluggish start for so many supposed title contenders and the Josh Primo saga in San Antonio. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) get the party started by sharing their thoughts on the unbelievably boring Thursday Night game between the Washington Commanders and the Chicago Bears. The fact that Ron Rivera's postgame rant is getting more play on Friday morning than the game itself speaks volumes. Later, the guys hit us rapid fire with sports takes on everything from UCLA's case as a dark horse College Football Playoff contender to whether or not Josh McDaniels could be one-and-done as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. Oh, and with NBA Opening Night around the corner, J-Mac and Rob G tell us whether or not we should expect the LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers to miss the playoffs yet again. Finally, Vegas Insider ‘Chasing That Paper!' host Joe Osborne swings by to discuss why he likes – but doesn't quite love – the Buffalo Bills to cover the spread this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, why the public bettors might be on to something by going to heavy on the New Orleans Saints over the Cincinnati Bengals, why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the Pittsburgh Steelers is one of the biggest mismatches on the board, why he's betting the over in the Minnesota Vikings vs Miami Dolphins game, why he loves the Seattle Seahawks with the points against the Arizona Cardinals, and much more! On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) swings by to discuss the San Francisco 49ers' bludgeoning of the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football. As impressive as the Niners looked, however, the real story here has to be the Rams. Their offensive line has been terrible through the first 4 weeks, and if they can't get it together it's hard to take them seriously as a Super Bowl contender this season. In fact, the guys argue that the defending champions shouldn't even be viewed as Tier 2 Super Bowl contender at this point. The only point of contention for J-Mac and Rob G is how much of the blame lies at the feet of Matthew Stafford. Was last season's playoff run just a mirage? Is he really nothing more than a more polished version of Jameis Winston? Finally, the fellas close the show with a quick NBA preseason whiparound in which Rob G details what went right for the Los Angeles Lakers and what wrong for the Brooklyn Nets. On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) kick things off by doing a deep dive into Tom Brady's mysterious training camp absence. Brady spoke about it for the first time over the weekend... and said a whole lot of nothing. Regardless what the exact reason was, it's clear this version of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is nothing like the one he won a Super Bowl with two years ago. In fact, J-Mac says he's officially pivoting to the New Orleans Saints to win the NFC South this year over Brady's Bucs. Later, the guys discuss Jason assertion that Trey Lance could have a Robert Griffin III-esque season this year with the San Francisco 49ers. RG3 burst on the scene as a rookie thanks in large part to a dominant running game which worked perfectly when paired with his own dynamic playmaking; Doesn't that sound exactly like what we expect to see from Lance this year in San Francisco? There's a reason why a handful of recent guests have pegged the Niners as a dark horse Super Bowl contender. Finally, Jason and Rob G close the show by discussing the notion that most NBA 'insiders' don't really know much at all when it comes to offseason movement. Not a single reporter had Rudy Gobert to Minnesota or Patrick Beverley to the Lakers before they actually happened. In fact, you can argue that the more frequently a trade rumor gets discussed the less likely it is to actually happen. Chris Broussard and Super Producer Rob G open the second hour of the show with a discussion on if LeBron James' career is a disappointment. Draymond Green discussed on his podcast that although LeBron is the smartest player to play the game, Draymond has just as many rings as him. Draymond also defended Kevin Durant on his podcast, and Rob G believes that Draymond's comments hurt Steph Curry's legacy.
