Show Notes Red Sonja Consumed by Gail Simone (Ken) - I got this as a Christmas present, and I'm looking forward to Gail's take on Red Sonja in novel form (I already read the comic book series she wrote; it was great). From the book blurb: The gutsy, wild, tortured free spirit, forged in pain yet unafraid of life or death, Red Sonja, the famous, fiery She-Devil and barbarian of Hyrkania has never concerned herself with the consequences of her actions. She's taken what she wanted, from treasure to drink to the companionship of bedfellows. She's fought who deserved it (and sometimes those who didn't). And she's never looked back. But when rumors start bubbling up from her homeland—rumors of unknown horrors emerging from the ground and pulling their unsuspecting victims to their deaths—and a strange voice begins whispering to her in her sleep, she realizes she may have to return to the country that abandoned her. And finally do the only thing that has ever scared her: confront her past. When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi (David) - I've been a fan of most of Scalzi's books. This is one of his more humorous books like Starter Villain and Kaiju Preservation Society. I'm looking forward to it. It's also going to hold me over until the next Old Man's War book comes out. The moon has turned into cheese. Now humanity has to deal with it. For some it's an opportunity. For others it's a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible. Astronauts and billionaires, comedians and bank executives, professors and presidents, teenagers and terminal patients at the end of their lives -- over the length of an entire lunar cycle, each get their moment in the moonlight. To panic, to plan, to wonder and to pray, to laugh and to grieve. All in a kaleidoscopic novel that goes all the places you'd expect, and then to so many places you wouldn't. It's a wild moonage daydream. Ride this rocket. Cold Eternity by S.A. Barnes (Ken) – Barnes' third sci-fi/horror/ghost story novel is out. I loved the creepy atmosphere of the first two, which makes this one an easy pick. Halley is on the run from an interplanetary political scandal that has put a huge target on her back. She heads for what seems like the perfect place to lay low: a gigantic space barge storing the cryogenically frozen bodies of Earth's most fortunate citizens from more than a century ago… The cryo program,

You stepped in for Tom Taylor on this annual—can you walk us through how that came about? Was this a story you had to write quickly, or did you have some room to breathe and make it your own? 2. The story kicks off with a classic locked-room mystery—an impossible murder in a high-tech safe room. What drew you to that kind of puzzle, and how did you approach building a detective narrative worthy of Batman?3. There's a moment where Batman's costume subtly shifts from black to blue once he's in London. Is that just a visual cue, or is there something more symbolic going on there?4. What's your take on the annual format? Do you see it as a chance to tell something self-contained and weird, or a pressure cooker to do a lot in a single oversized issue?5. You're working with a trio of incredible artists—Stefano Raffaele, John McCrea, and Fico Ossio. How did you decide who handled which parts of the story, and what did each artist bring to the table stylistically?6. This annual flirts with the idea of Batman not just solving crimes but confronting the nature of reality. How far is too far for Batman, in your mind, when it comes to stories that push past the physical world?7. UK mythology and angels? John Dee's magic - Elizabethan 8. Maybe the most important question of them all, what is Batman's favorite tea and how does he take it?
Rogue and Magneto In Marvel's Savage Land, The Turtles Face The Masters Of The Universe, Red Sonja teams up with Ash from Army of Datkness, and Vigilante and Eagly are in a DC Black Lable Double feature. All this and more on the stands from Tim Seeley

A few weeks back we lamented on the lack of fantasy movies. They were a part of our childhoods that we love and missed. As if on cue, we talk about the news regarding the new Red Sonja movie - another childhood favorite. We also revisit Dead Mail before it debuts on Shudder in April. The 1970s were the peak of nunsploitation. It would not last long, but a number of memorable nun horror films were released. While it has not returned to that level, there has been an increase in genre films centered around nuns. Perhaps even more surprising is that they have often been pretty good. The Baby in the Basket has a lot going for it. It looks like a Gothic horror movie straight out of the 70s. It also leans into its wacky premise. From the demonic baby to some graphic sexual content, this movie does not play around. It is unfortunate that as much effort was not put into the writing.Rob Zombie is a polarizing figure in the horror community. While some love the shock value of his movies, others wonder if he really likes horror movies or is just trying to turn everyone against them. So when we heard that his brother Spider One had written and directed a horror movie we were interested. Especially after we saw the trailer which hinted that Little Bites was about a monster that is slowly eating a person alive.Yes, it is early in the year and yes, Nosferatu was an incredibly creepy villain, but did we come across the best Big Bad of 2025? Agyar is definitely a frightening creature. Every scene he is in will make your skin crawl. You cannot wait for him to get off the screen. And this is meant as a compliment. There are some noticeable missteps along the way. For the most part, they can be chalked up to Spider One's feature film inexperience. That being said, they do stick out in and leave a negative aftertaste. But how much do they affect Little Bites? And what does Cher have to do with everything? Instead of reviewing a film or book, we instead go through some of the news of the past year and discuss in detail some of the most interesting things we've heard. Thirst trap is the topic of today's Quackcast! What is a thirst trap? It's basically someone presenting themselves as very sexy in order to get attention for some sort of reason, rather than just happening to look attractive. So it's usually used for some sort of advertising purpose, to sell their OnlyFans, to get a date, or more conventional advertising. Today we're talking about it it terms of comics :) Years and years ago there ws an explosively popular comic on Drunk Duck called Craving Control. It was very well drawn and featured a sex, very busty women who would eat uncontrollably and get very fat and then slim down again quite suddenly. For some reason this was MASSIVELY interesting to people. The reason I mention it hear though is that their thumbnail pronominally featured a very boobular cleavage shot of the main character. Many of us creators on the site envied the popularity of this comic and chose to copy that thumbnail style. Suddenly there were all sorts of comics on the site being advertised with boob or butt thumbnails. Thirst traps everywhere! It started a fad on the site. People all suddenly re-learned the ancient lesson that “sex sells”. In our cast we expand this a bit to talk about some of the famous thirst trap comics that often don't deliver on the promise of their covers like Vampirella, along with Witchblade and Red Sonja. This was something that existed even before comics back with the old pulps. Artists like Margeret Brundage were famous for their scantily clad, busty women in compromising situations, which the stories within weren't nearly as racy. The of course we have “bodice-ripper” romance novels featuring women in tight corsets and men with bulging chests… Have you been guilty or at least tempted to use this tactic to promote your work? I know I have! Future topic: Benevolent sexism, also benevolent racism. This week Gunwallace was still unwell so I picked a sexy sounding past one to go along with the the topic today - Pep Squad - These girls are here to get you motivated! You can almost SEE the dance routine in your mind's eye, and believe me, it's pretty sexy… They've got some moves. The crowd roars as the pep squad performs, bumping, grinding and sliding on the stage. Michael expanded to writing with Bastard Samurai, and continued with several projects in Marvel's Thor universe as well as Omega Flight, Red Sonja, and Six. This episodes guest is Ron Marz, an absolute legend of the industry, having written some of the biggest characters around for over 3 decades. He's worked for Marvel, DC, Dynamite, Image, co founded Crossgen and more, writing era defining runs for Green Lantern, Silver Surfer (creating legacy characters in both titles) Witchblade, Thor, Star Wars and more. He's also worked on the Big 2 company crossovers, being heavily involved in DC vs Marvel, as well as All Access. And the timing is pretty perfect for chatting about that, as there are long awaited omnibus reprints on the way. Maybe any chance of any new crossovers? We'll be sure to ask… He's written Superman, Batman, Captain America, Aliens, Darth Maul, John Carter, Red Sonja, What If, XO Manowar…the list goes on and on.... Hope you guys enjoy!

Join Johnny Spoiler and scream queen Jordan Savage as they brandish their wit and nostalgia in a journey through the enchanted lands of fantasy movies, beginning with a hearty banter on the cult favorite "Red Sonja." The duo doesn't hold back, diving into Arnold Schwarzenegger's larger-than-life on-set stories and the recent beat of his human heart beneath the legendary muscle—a pacemaker update that reminds us even icons have their battles. We'll navigate through the choppy waters of potential revivals from the spinach-chewing "Popeye" to the long-awaited swings of a "Happy Gilmore" sequel, all while stirring up the cauldron of anticipation and cherished recollections. The clang of swords and the roar of dragons take center stage as we peel back the curtain on "Red Sonja's" tumultuous production tales. You'll get an earful about Arnold's unexpected leap from a cameo to a co-starring role and the hunt for a female lead who could stand toe-to-toe with the screen's mightiest warrior. The chapter unfolds, revealing "Red Sonja's" secret identity as possibly Marvel's first cinematic outing, setting the stage for a legacy long before comic book movies became Hollywood's behemoths. We cap off with a spirited critique of some of the film's most thrilling scenes—yes, including that unforgettable water fight sequence. As we sheathe our swords from the on-screen escapades, Jordan and I retreat to the kingdom of childhood, where the echoes of laughter from epic backyard quests still linger. We reminisce about the days of cardboard castles and wrapping paper swords, drawing parallels between those simple joys and our current quests for moments of solitude and play. A dream ushers in a heartfelt conversation about the profound impact of those formative years, as we invite you to join us in this intimate roundtable, sharing your stories and continuing the dialogue that bridges the past, present, and future of our shared love for the fantastical.Get the Zocdoc app for FREE at https://bit.ly/ZOCDOCFREE, book a top-rated doctor today with many available within 24 hours.Go to https://www.prettylitter.com/bingewatch and use code bingewatch to save twenty percent on your first order.Support the showDrop us a voicemail https://bit.ly/VOICEMAILTHEPODSay hi? host@bwpodcast.comPartner with us? sales@bwpodcast.com

Welcome to Season 4, Episode 8! Today's conversation is with Amy Chu, a co-founder and former editor of A. Magazine, screenwriter, co-founder of Alpha Girl Comics, and well-known comic book author. Her latest title is Fighting to Belong! Volume 1 (out now, so go get it), which is a graphic novel focused on the history and contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders in America. Published by Third State Books, Fighting to Belong! is co-written with Amy's son, Alexander Chang, and illustrated by Louie Chin. It's a collaborative project with The Asian American Foundation, The Asian American Education Project, and others. The importance of Fighting to Belong! cannot be overstated. Through an engaging story, readers will be entertained, engaged, educated, and empowered. Amy has written a diverse collection of titles that include Poison Ivy, Kiss, Wonder Woman, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, and Ant-Man. Two of our favorite works by Amy are the Trot and Cap'n Bill series for teens and Carmilla: The First Vampire graphic novel. Amy is able to weave in diversity and depth to her stories in a way that makes typically underrepresented people (like API) feel seen and heard. In our conversation, we talk about all of these things as well as her journey to comics, the importance of diverse storytelling, the status of Fighting to Belong! Volume 2, what draws her to writing complex characters, and so much more. Whether you like comics, good storytelling, history, or diversity, we highly recommend getting Fighting to Belong! or any of Amy's other work, but especially the Trot and Cap'n Bill series, Carmilla: The First Vampire, and Poison Ivy. You can learn more about Amy through her website and her work with Alpha Girl Comics. She also has signed copies of her work available. You can follow her on Twitter or Instagram as well.
