Red Sonja It's been an age since we've seen Red Sonja... a Hyborian Age in fact! Since the characters creation in 1934, her adaption to comics in 1973 and the first film's release in 1985, she has caught the minds of innumerable great creators, artists and storytellers. She has also shown up in this film. After 2008's aborted Robert Rodriguez helmed version which was to star Rose McGowan, it's been a long time between drinks for the OG beautiful barbarian. it's obviously harder to get actors interested in scale mail bikinis in the modern market... it seems you just have to wait long enough and drop the budget enough that eventually someone just says "Screw it, why not?" and thats how we got here... All four of the review team are in for this review, "Occasionally Red Jill", "Pleasantly Earth-toned Peta", and "Concerningly Puce Dion". Though they are all mightily annoyed with "No Confirmed Colour Quinny" for his terrible choice... He's in movie-choosing-jail for a while yet to come... Synopsis The film follows the adventures of the nomad barbarian Sonja, who unites a group of unlikely warriors to face off against Dragan and his deadly consort Annisia. https://youtu.be/Lk7ItIJwAhE?si=Q1L00K3xC2kWIRvK As always, a Hyborian high five to the barbarian and babe-arians who join in with the conversation on the Twitch stream, live each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEDT. And an especially huge thanks to any of the generous stop-motion cycplopses who are kind enough to support us by smashing a tip in our jar via Ko-Fi, or subscribing on twitch... every bit helps us to keep the gladiator pits mucked out and the scale mail polished.... Con la reciente conmemoración del bicentenario la Declaratoria de la Independencia de Uruguay, hacemos un especial de historietas orientales. O sea, manga. No, mentira. Con música de 3 Inches of Blood, Blind Guardian, Cuchilla Grande, y The Lone Rangers (Brendan Fraser + White Zombie, interpretando a Reagan Youth). Escuchalo en tu plataforma de podcasts favorita, primero lo subimos a Ivoox: bit.ly/perdidos638 bit.ly/perdidos638yt Próximo programa: Star Trek - Strange New Worlds (Temporada 3).

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast asks perhaps the biggest question ever tackled on this show: who would win in a fight between the Gleesons and the Skarsgårds? Join Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Amon Warmann, as they tackle that scenario and more. Is the world truly ready for the Coppola clan kicking bottom? Elsewhere, our intrepid quartet discuss the week's movie news (Star Wars! Superman! Lara Croft!), including a discussion of the trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple that discusses spoilers for 28 Years Later. So, if you wish to skip, that runs from 53:44 - 58:00 approx. Oh, and they also review Spike Lee's reunion with Denzel Washington, Highest 2 Lowest, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Ethan Coen's Honey Don't, and Orlando Bloom's searing boxing drama, The Cut. In fact, Orlando is one of our guests this week, joining The Cut's director Sean Ellis to chat with Chris on Zoom about the extreme lengths, physical and otherwise, he went to for the film. [1:08:37 - 1:25:12 approx] And Chris also sits down in the podbooth with MJ Bassett, director of the brand new version of Red Sonja, for a candid conversation about MJ's long-held determination to make a Red Sonja movie, her recent decision to leave the United States to return to Britain, and much, much more. [22:22 - 40:22 approx] Enjoy.

Highlander is a weird franchise. It seemed like a big deal in the 80s. Big enough to warrant a couple of sequels and a TV series that lasted a few seasons. It also has one of the most quotable lines in cinema history. Yet, it is also incredibly underrated. Which makes some sense considering all that came out of that decade. We also talk about directors who have their heads up their asses.Arnold Schwarzenegger – whose credits include Junior and The Expendables 3 – has called Red Sonja the worst film he has ever made. That is a matter of personal opinion, but there is no denying the Brigette Nielsen vehicle is pretty bad. Add in the fact that this adaptation has been languishing in developmental hell for over a decade, and it seems like a huge risk. The 2025 version of Red Sonja manages to work because it knows its audience. It is a straightforward sword and sorcery flick that is sexy enough to play to that audience, but modern enough to not exploit Matilda Lutz. The performances are fantastic and the production looks great. There are some missteps along the way, but it is a very good Red Sonja adaptation. How do you make a re-imagining for The Toxic Avenger? The original idea was to go the family friendly route? But is that what fans really want to see? You also don't want to go the make jokes out of sexually assaulting a blind woman direction either since nobody wants to see that. Is there a middle ground when it comes to Troma?Thankfully, the 2025 version of The Toxic Avenger manages to figure it out. It is crude and disgusting fun that manages to offend without taking thinks too far. Sure, there is a lot of violence, and it definitely will not be for everyone, but fans of the source material will love what they did with the latest installment. Director M.J. Bassett and actor Matilda Lutz join this episode of the Movies In Focus podcast to talk about their new fantasy adventure film, Red Sonja. The movie brings the cult comic-book character back to the screen, and as noted in the Movies In Focus review, it's a bold reimagining that puts Lutz front and centre as the sword-wielding warrior. Her performance as Red Sonja grounds the film and gives real weight to a character that's had a complicated history in cinema. M.J. Bassett's career has always explored genre storytelling, from action to horror, and here she tackles the challenge of reviving a legendary figure with fresh energy. Together, they've crafted a film that blends classic fantasy with modern sensibilities. In this conversation, they discuss the process of bringing Red Sonja to life, the character's enduring appeal, and what audiences can expect when they step back into her world.

Red Sonja is based on Red Sonja, which is, in turn, partially based on Red Sonya. The Red Sonya interpretation is credited as such for this movie, however it's actually based on Red Sonja, not Red Sonya. And during production, it was briefly called Red Sonia.Confused? I'm not surprised. So many Sonjas/Sonyas/Sonias. And what about Conan, I mean, Kalidor?Sonja/Sonya's evolution from Robert E. Howard's historical 16th-century warrior to Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith's iconic Marvel Comics fantasy heroine, each brought something unique to the Red Sonja legacy.Kalidor (definitely not Conan!) is in an interesting case study of Hollywood rights navigation, where creative solutions led to a character that channels the spirit of Conan while remaining legally distinct. Red Sonja's innovative approach to special effects, and the decision to shoot everything in-camera created a distinctive visual style that prioritized practical filmmaking techniques over post-production polish. While it has its flaws, Red Sonja represents an ambitious chapter in fantasy filmmaking that pushed boundaries and took creative risks, offering valuable insights into the evolution of the sword-and-sorcery genre and Hollywood's ongoing relationship with strong female protagonists.I would love to hear your thoughts on Red Sonja (1985) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! They react to Greta Gerwig's Narnia set photos, talk through the young Rambo prequel casting, and share practical steps for Roblox safety that parents can use right now. Reviews land for Alien Earth and King of the Hill. Plus, Frank chats with Alex Austin about building a social platform out of a podcast app and what moderation and growth look like in 2025. Family adventure is a priority which fills a gap left by pure superhero focus and could broaden audience reach. Two Star Trek films are on deck, one tied to the Kelvin crew and one new project from Toby Haynes. Narnia starts with The Magician's Nephew, which makes the world feel fresh while connecting to classic imagery. The Rambo prequel raises a bigger question about when to create new action icons instead of reviving old ones. Roblox needs stronger safety guardrails, while parents can act now with private servers, whitelists, spending locks, and no random chats. Alien Earth blends practical effects with slow-burning world-building and earns a nine out of ten from both hosts. King of the Hill nails a modern continuation that honors the original and lands a perfect ten out of ten from Frank. Memorable quotes Squeaks on Paramount. Right now, they are not messing around Frank Family adventure feels like the missing lane, and it is a smart way to reach everyone Frank Alien Earth plays like Fargo in space, and I mean that as a compliment Frank, this new King of the Hill does not feel like a reboot, it feels like the next season Squeaks if you are not doing enough to protect kids other people will try, and that should be a wake-up call Call to action If you enjoy the show tap Follow or Subscribe in your podcast app. Leave a quick rating and review to help more geeks find us. Wrap the bow tie tight and make sure your laser cufflinks are charged because it's time to pit Bond against Bond. We compare A View to a Kill and Goldeneye and follow it with a tournament to see who the top secret agent is besides 007 on Enjoy Stuff! Besides 007, who makes the best secret agent? Who has the best wardrobe? Gadgets? Sense of humor? We find out on the Secret Agent tournament.  News A new exhibition: The Nostalgia Awakens: Retro Kenner Star Wars Action Figure Toys    The Alamo Drafthouse just opened a kaiju themed theater in Santa Clara, California.  TRON Ares will get some attention at San Diego Comic Con this year in Hall H There's a new trailer for the upcoming reboot Red Sonja. Yes. I'm serious.   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua just can't get enough of James Gunn's Superman! It's everything his Superman should be, plus some important lessons that we could all use today. Like, right now. Jay continues his travels across the country on his way back from visiting Shua. He was really fascinated with the carvings of Mt. Rushmore and the detail that went into this massive monument.      Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay thinks it's About Time. The movie that is, starring Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams. Gleeson's character discovers that he can travel through time in his own life and change things. But it may backfire if he's not careful. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Spies!  40 years ago, Roger Moore wrapped up his James Bond career with the 14th movie in the franchise, A View to a Kill. He was up against Christopher Walken's psychotic billionaire Max Zorin who was going to “Lex Luthor” Silicon Valley so he could be more of a billionaire. 30 years ago Pierce Brosnan debuted his Bond in Goldeneye as he went up against a rogue agent played by Sean Bean. Both films have their strengths, and of course a few parts that are full of more hot air than Max Zorin's blimp. But we love to watch them anyway.    Then we assess the non-Bond secret agents in a tournament to crown the Spycraft General! Maxwell Smart to Ethan Hunt. Jason Bourne to Austin Powers. Who will diffuse the bomb at the last second and take home the microchip?   Who is your favorite spy? Which Bond is your go-to secret agent? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Shaken and definitely stirred” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know.
