Each episode, Frank will be joined by a special guest, in this case, podcaster Ed Moore of Teal Productions, to cover characters and concepts from across DC's history. Our discussion of the given property will be married to a piece of original art commissioned by DC to spotlight the same. This time around, we chat about 2010's DC Universe Legacies #1, by Len Wein, Andy & Joe Kubert, as well as a host of other talents on the main and supplemental stories. There are some indie comics and characters that have become huge global successes, moved into legend and lets face it, everyone knows about. What about those books and characters that have gone under the radar and should have been as big? Well Alan Henderson (The Penned Guins) joins the ACP gang to discuss what comics you should rediscover, or discover for the first time. We won't let them fade into time and neither should you! Also there is chat about creativity, conventions, great events to check out going forward and of course... lots of COMICS!! Great stuff to check out: The Best of Indie Comics: Words Only, Pie Press, Cerebus, Concrete, Martha Washington, Frank Miller, Dave Gibbons, Mars, First Comics, Groo, Sergio Aragones, Skeleton Key, Andy Watson, Amaze Inc, Liberty Meadows, Frank Cho, Mike Mauser, Miss Tree, Mike R.Cane, Starblazer, Boneyard, Richard Moore, NBM, The Press Guardian, Green Archer Comics, Allan Liska, The Dry Cleaner, TBH Comics, Tyrant Fall, Tribute Press, Caribou, Francis Todd, Incident Report, ADM Comics, My Sugar Baby: Adventure in Ukraine (Until the War), Lizzie Parsec Episode 4: back in Aelia, Hugh Newell, Penultimate Quest, Lars Brown
(00:00:00) The Geek Matrix Pod reviews DC's Weekly Comics Releases This week, (11/20/24), that's: (00:36:19) Action Comics #1076 (00:48:00) Batman-Superman World's Finest #33 (00:53:29) Titans 17 (01:04:50) Catwoman #70 (01:09:45) The Question: All Along The Watchtower #1 (00:41:33) Plus our Honorable Mentions covered each week by Josh! Here's the run down – Variants McFarlane Toys again for variant covers on Batman / Superman: World's Finest #33, Action comics #1076, Titans #17. Lots of pretty good variants this week, but my favorite is undoubtedly Catwoman #70 by Frank Cho, followed very closely by the Watchtower Variants from Jorge Fornes, Lucio Parrillo, and Danny Earls. Issues Batman & Robin Year One #2 – Really good. 100% Samnee art. The dialog is great and it's a really good story. 8.25/10 Batman Full Moon #2– Fantastic. Utterly fantastic. If anyone is telling you otherwise, well, the just aren't right. The art and story and dialog are all spot on in this book. 8.5/10 Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #5– Okay 5 issues in and I can officially say this without doubt. So far, Allwinter outshines the original story, and that original story was awesome… and… the art scheme. It sells it so much. Every sliver of the story is also being told in the art and the colors and if you aren't reading it, I mean this, you are truly missing out. .. 8.5/10 Jenny Sparks #4– I really don't know what I was expecting with this. At all. But it wasn't this. I didn't expect to like this. Here I am hating it. The art is really, really, really good. But that's NOT Jenny Sparks OR Captain Atom. Again, it's the art – 6.5/10 Wonder Woman #15 – Same as Jenny Sparks, but lower because this is canon, not Elseworlds. Great art. Awesome art. Really crappy story. 6/10 Milestone Universe-The Shadow Cabinet #1– So much in this issue! It really kicked this 4-issue mini off. There's a lot to the issue, and it's a good thing it has extra pages. I'm really looking forward to the next issue so we can find out more about what's going on, and what will happen with the Blood Syndicate and where are the rest of the team? Man, I love Milestone. 8.5/10. #Superman #Batman #WonderWoman #Titans #Catwoman #TheQuestion #AllAlongTheWatchtower #Milestone #DCAllIn #AllIn #Absolute #DCComics #comics #comicbooks --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegeekmatrixcomics/support

MOON RATING : Rebecca:
Sometimes it's worth revisiting old ideas because you can do them better or explore them deeper. This could be in the form of a full reboot, or it could be as simple as reusing a pose in a panel or using the same theme again like Pixar does with 90% of their output i.e. “coming of age”. Like them you don't need to feel obligated to always do something totally original, revisiting old ideas is a great way to refine them, create better work, or explore different aspects of them you hadn't considered before and put new and interesting spins on things. Consider that Pixar's Turning Red, Encanto, Moana, Coco, The Incredibles 2, Ratatouille, Inside Out, Brave, Onward, and Luca all share the same “coming of age/childhood independence” theme and yet all do it in unique and original ways, exploring different aspects of the idea from all sorts of angles. Most of the women that Frank Cho and Milo Manara draw look the same, but they do it in such an interesting way that people love them nevertheless. Leonardo daVinci and or his students painted at least 4 different Mona Lisas and probably many drawings; practice make perfect! How many film and comic versions of the origin story of Batman, Superman, and Spider-man are there? SarahN on Drunk Duck used to restart and redo her comic “Vampire Phantasm” annually, maybe 5 different times, and it just got better and better and more interesting with each iteration. Amelius on DD did a soft reboot of the origin of Charby The Vampirate called “ReVamped” where she went back and tweaked the origin story a little and redrew the pages with much improved art, however she didn't stop working on the original story, that kept going at the same time! So you see there is a lot of merit in revisiting things and improving upon them! For every George Lucas inserting bad animation and “Noooooo”s into iconic and much loved films there are many more people who revisit older creations and do much better things with them. What do you wish you could redo with your work or how do you reuse old ideas? For me it's usually specific panels… sometimes they bug me too much and I go back and change them. They could be 15 years old but I'll still do it! This week Gunwallace has given us a theme to TAoSP The Adventures of Sir Power - In the words of the master behind this tune: funky theme for a comic that's a little bit ‘funky'. It really is a bouncing funk, with a fuzzy, spiky sound that vibrates and cuts its way through.

Images for this episode are at http://www.multiversitycomics.com/podcasts/comics-syllabus-001-wonder-woman-year-one/ (also, please note a correction below- 5/31/2017) This week's Comics Syllabus podcast digs deep into the "Year One" story arc from "Wonder Woman" #2, 4, 6, 10, 12, and 14 by writer Greg Rucka, artist Nicola Scott, colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr., and letterer Jodi Wynne (leaving out an interlude in issue 8 with Bilquis Everly on art). I draw heavily on Carolyn Cocca's Superwomen: Gender, Power, and Representation (Bloomsbury), recently nominated for an Eisner, to consider the heavy "representational weight" that Wonder Woman has historically carried as the iconic female superhero. I think about how the "Year One" creative team deals with (or doesn't deal with) this history and the present in the pages and panels of their new origin story for Wonder Woman. (For a briefer primer on Wonder Woman and cultural history, check out this piece from the Nib by Lucy Bellwood and Sarah Mirk: https://thenib.com/what-does-wonder-woman-actually-represent?t=recent ) Also mentioned in this episode, an editorial from the National Review quoting a commentary piece from the James G. Martin Center throwing shade on the trend of comics in college classrooms: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/447676/comic-books-college-martin-center-article https://www.jamesgmartin.center/2017/05/graphic-novels-trending-english-departments-thats-problem/ and the venerable Comixscholars listserv where great researchers and theorists fan the flames. http://www.english.ufl.edu/comics/scholars/ SPOILER WARNING: In the beginning of the episode, we discuss Wonder Woman and comics in non-spoilery general terms. But after the first break at ( 33:00 ), we start diving into close-readings of the chosen work. So if you don't want to be spoiled on the events and details of this work, please go and read it first, and come back to finish the episode with us and enjoy it with us. Consider it homework, but more fun. You can find archives for this podcast(previously named "Study Comics with Paul") here. Or find the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, or Soundcloud. CORRECTION (5/31/2017): Upon re-listening to the episode, Paul realized that one of his brain farts was an egregious error that needed correction, naming the WW variant cover artist of some controversy as Michael Cho-- an artist whose art and views Paul greatly admires-- when it is actually Frank Cho-- an artist whose art Paul sometimes admires, sometimes not so much. Paul is often unflatteringly mistaken for others, and so deeply regrets the flub, and has re-recorded that snippet for posterity. Also, while shouting out the Comix-Scholars listserv, Paul misspelled "scolars." Great job. The irony ..)

This weekend several comic book podcasters got together to do a non-stop 24 hour comics podcast. They included DC artist Mike Norton and Chris Crank of Devil's Due (The Crankcast) Marvel artist Skottie Young, Chris Neesman Brian Salazar & Tom Katers (Around Comics) Stevie D and Eric (The Comic Book Queers) and John Siuntres (Word Balloon).Along with the round table discussions, there were informal interviews with other comic pros like J Torres, Tim Seeley, Chris Moreno Jeremy Haun Chris Burnham, Sean McKeever and Brian Michael Bendis. Most of the pros just talked casually about work in general, but Bendis dropped a few comic news items regarding his books. On this special edition of Word Balloon, we present the Bendis interview, moderated by John Siuntres and the Around Comics hosts. Some highlights from the interview...On Ultimate Origin being re-scheduled...Bendis and artist Butch Guice have three issues completed, but some tie-in stories written by Jeph Loeb won't be ready till next year. Plus they didn't want the Ultimate Universe storyline to conflict with Bendis' Secret Invasion miniseries, so Ultimate Origin is getting pushed back until the end of summer 2008. On the ,b>Avengers/Secret Invasion/Illuminati books…When artist Frank Cho finishes his Mighty Avengers arc he will move to the Mighty Avengers Annual featuring an all female Avengers team facing a group of female villains. Mark Bagley then replaces Cho on the series, and he's already finished drawing his arc. After issues #6 and #7 of Mighty Avengers comes out, Illuminati #5 will be released. New Avengers #38 will be a very special issue focusing on Jessica Jones and Luke Cage drawn by Alias co-creator Michael Gaydos. "I don't want to spoil the story but it's called ‘The Break-Up.'"
